THE VANNS announce ‘RED EYE TOUR’ for March/April and release alternate version of 'JULES SAID’ from acclaimed debut album, THROUGH THE WALLS It has been an absolutely huge 12 months for THE VANNS. With the release of their debut album Through The Walls, the South Coast band firmly cemented their identity as one of Australia’s most formidable names on the indie rock circuit. Now, with a new decade already kicking into gear, The VANNS announce they’re getting back out on the road this Autumn and to boot, they’re releasing a special new version of album track, ‘Jules Said’. The new single, written by Jimmy Vann and Cameron Little expands upon the original album version, with the band hitting the studio with Grammy nominated, ARIA winning producer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths, Pharrell Williams) to bring this new version of ‘Jules Said’ to life. “Jim and I wrote ‘Jules Said’ in my bedroom in under an hour. It was the first song we finished writing for Through The Walls. We were doing a lot of writing on Logic and trying to come up with ‘cool sounds’ for a while, and then we went out to lunch and were like, ‘When we get back, let’s just try and write something with two guitars and no computer’.” Cameron Little Earning acclaim from fans and throughout the industry, The VANNS embraced powerful melodies, driving guitar and songwriting strength with Through The Walls and as the reaction to the album went on to prove, the four-piece were definitely showing up and demonstrating long-lasting quality on record. Nabbing triple j’s Feature Album spot during Ausmusic Month 2019, rave reviews and fired up crowds across all dates of their Australian tour at the tailend of last year, The VANNS stepped further into the Australian music spotlight than before. Not ones to waste time, the band’s forthcoming tour dates are ready to keep the momentum going. “Really pumped to be heading back out on tour, especially doing other venues and towns we haven’t done in a while. Playing to a new crowd, some of whom may not have seen/heard the album songs live yet is super refreshing and can make a show feel unpredictable. That’s something I really love about touring and am excited to be a part of.” Andrew Banovich “Another strong track from this froth-worthy band. The VANNS have gotta be one of the best indie rock acts in the country right now.” Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe “Easy to see why The VANNS have popped off in such a big way in recent years. They know their way around a pop rock winner like they wrote the map.” Triple J Unearthed, Tommy Faith “The four piece have grown to become a quintessential name to the Australian rock scene and the many pockets of brilliance it contains, taking a ‘quality AND quantity’ approach to songwriting that ensures that they’re never quite forgotten about without having to compensate in their work’s strength.” Pilerats “Packed to the brim with the charm and infectious hooks that we’ve come to know and love from the band, along with evocative and emotional songwriting.” Music Feeds THE VANNS AUSTRALIAN TOUR DATES Presented by triple j With Special Guests Death By Denim Tickets: https://www.thevannsband.com/shows Thursday, March 19th Altar Bar Hobart* Friday, March 20th Howler Melbourne Saturday, March 21st Adelaide Unibar Adelaide* Friday, March 27th Sol Bar Sunshine Coast Saturday, March 28th Crowbar Brisbane Friday, April 3rd Wollongong Uni Wollongong Saturday, April 4th Cambridge Hotel Newcastle Friday, April 17th Indian Ocean Hotel Perth *Death By Denim not appearing ‘Jules Said’ is released Friday, January 17th. Melbourne native DJ Boring finally returns home to Australia for ten dates

by the partae January 17, 2020
written by the partae
Tour Dates

Saturday 7 March: Days Like This, Sydney
Sunday 8 March: Pitch Music & Arts, Melbourne
Thursday 12 March: Electric Rush, Queenstown
Friday 13 March: 121 Festival, Wellington
Saturday 14 March: Outpost Bar, Brisbane
Sunday 15 March: Nevermind Smallclub, Perth
Friday 20 March: Sugar, Adelaide
Saturday 21 March: Tusk Bar, Wollongong
Saturday 21 March: Goodbar, Sydney
Sunday 22 March: Revolver Upstairs, Melbourne

Out of a Melbourne bedroom in early 2016, a new underground house music movement was spawned, leading to an undeniable dancefloor anthem and a limitless career for Tristan Hallis. Better known as DJ Boring, he is synonymous with the lo-fi house sound which he kick-started in 2016 with his track ‘Winona Ryder‘. With over 5 million Youtube plays and counting, that track came to represent the definition of lo-fi house.

Since then, the Australian has moved to London and conquered Europe. For proof, look no further than his Boiler Room recording from the 2019 AVA Festival in Ireland which was one of the event’s most-watched streams. His sound still maintains the key characteristics that saw his career explode, including the infamous sound of Roland 909, dreamy FM synthesizers and a hell of a lot of vinyl static. As a DJ he is known for being a dance floor controlling master, a selector who can throw down obscure new cuts alongside classic late-90’s house or techno.

DJ Boring’s return back home will see him play 10 dates, including Pitch Music & Arts and Days Like This festivals, alongside filling a coveted Triple J residency for March.

DJ BORING aka Tristan Hallis could be the most ironically named performer today: energetic journeys into forgotten gems and future classics, nothing about what he does is boring. He inhabits a space where throwback trance sits comfortably with old-school house, and Belgium Techno syncs with rolling funk. He meets each mix physically with sweaty, infectious performances that are compelling to watch. In the studio, the producer has honed in on a contemporary sound paying homage to dance music’s dense past. Whether its Detroit Techno-inspired or Chicago House layered with obscure Youtube samples, his productions are birthed in hardware and imbued with Hallis’ energetic personality – humanity sorely lacking in many productions today. This trait shines through in his new live show where hardware and controllers become a natural extension of his creative self, a conduit through which he presents a fresh take on his music.

The Growlers / Star Crawlers – Melbourne – The Croxton 16 January 2020

by the partae January 17, 2020
written by the partae

Photography: Nate Hill https://www.natehillphotography.com.au/

Words: Chris Brooks

Starcrawler burst onto the stage at Thornbury’s the Croxton like a feral cat jumping out of a hat, wild and raw.  Mesmerising limbs, long blonde hair framing the occasional glimpse of an intoxicating face and a tall gaunt body that without notice would explode with brute force, a very rare artistic ability that would entrance the audience with the slightest gesture of pure screeching Banshee darkness.

Starcrawler have the ability to take you to the edge and beyond, leaving you with a feeling of what the fuck just happened?! Starcrawler are a mysterious, alluring, sex scuzz rock fuck machine.

Then rolled in the oh so chill The Growlers to a young and hungry ready to party sold out Croxton crowd.  The vibe was wholesome, upbeat with a lot of singalongs.   The Beach Goth kings were in town and everyone in attendance was high on the scent and ready to party the night away.

The Growlers played a sexy, sweaty mix of tracks that spanned across all albums keeping the eager crowd guessing as to what was coming up next.  Singer Brooks Nielson interacted with the crowd keeping the party vibe high and energy levels soaring.  The set was uplifting and the night felt more like a house party than a club show.  All in all it was great show by both unique acts, thanks for a fucking awesome party to everyone who attended, it was definitely a night to remember!!

SUPPORT FOR STUPID BABY "It's big sounding stuff from Stupid Baby. A tidy mix of shoegaze, dreamy and grunge that works so well. Keen to hear more!" - 4/5 stars - Declan Byrne - triple j (AUS) "Stupid Baby deliver deliciously dark debut 'Feline'." - Life Without Andy (AUS) NSW Central Coast-based indie-rock quartet, Stupid Baby have just unveiled their stunning debut single ‘Feline’ – produced by Simon Dobson (Bootleg Rascal) and mixed by Dylan Adams (DMA’s, Skegss, The Gooch Palms, West Thebarton). Taking cues from the likes of The Kills, Sonic Youth and The Dead Weather, ‘Feline’ is a brooding and thought-provoking slice of sophisticated indie-rock, that swiftly sets the pace with its immediate and unwavering consistency. Dynamics and structure are harnessed with finesse, as deft instrumentation provides an apt foundation for the dual vocal efforts of Liz Drummond and Jake Dobson to brightly shine. Drummond describes the motivation behind ‘Feline’: “We felt ‘Feline’ was a good introduction to what’s to come from Stupid Baby. We wrote it pretty quickly in the room together, starting with the riff. The lyrics were fairly stream of consciousness between Jake and I, which we liked. We wanted to hone in on the dual vocal thing, and for all the parts of this song to be driving, and alluding to some kind of intense relationship dynamic. It's probably one of the moodier, darker Stupid Baby songs”. Bootleg Rascal – Reveal New Single and Video for ‘Lonely Times’, Plus East Coast Tour and Bushfire Appeal Event

by the partae January 17, 2020

SUPPORT FOR ‘LONELY TIMES’

“What a mix of styles and sounds the Bootleg boys have chucked in the mixing bowl on this one. All up though, it’s another ultimate cruiser”.
Declan Byrne – triple j (AUS)

“All the elements of this tune are understated just enough for the electiveness to work as one — a summer tune with post-night out vibes”.
Nkechi Anele – triple j (AUS)

Currently in the midst of a 15-date metro and regional tour, Sydney-based party starters Bootleg Rascal have just unveiled East Coast tour dates and their new single ‘Lonely Times’ – produced by the band themselves and long-time collaborator Ian Pritchett (Boo Seeka, Kim Churchill, Angus and Julia Stone), with additional production by Simon Dobson (Little May).

‘Lonely Times’ is a feel good summer party anthem that shines a light on the duo’s unique genre-fusion. Melding their sun-soaked reggae and dub roots with modern day hip-hop, the track captures an unrelenting energy filled with infectious hooks, deft instrumentation and clever vocal cadences.

The release is accompanied by the music video, shot at front man Carlos Lara’s house in Sydney by Sam Brumby (Julia Jacklin, The Rubens, Ali Barter).

Following on from their sold-out ‘Yin & Yang’ tour, the group have announced another East Coast capital city run for March and April. Coming along for the ride will be Brisbane stalwarts, Shag Rock, and Sydney-based punk-rock crowd favourites, SCABZ.

The duo will also make an appearance at ‘Day on the Lawn’ in Hobart, Tasmania on March 21, sharing stages with the likes of Boy & Bear and MEG MAC.

Furthermore, the group have revealed news that they’ll be donating 100% of profits from tickets sold at tonight’s show at Miranda Hotel, to the NSW Rural Fire Service, in the wake of the current bushfire crisis.

Since their mid-2013 inception, Bootleg Rascal have released a slew of singles, an EP and two albums, all warmly received by critics and fans around the world. Multiple tracks have been added to Spotify and Apple Music playlists, high rotation on triple j and they’ve performed on the stations esteemed ‘Like a Version’ segment.

The band have continually traversed the globe playing multiple sold out headline shows in France, UK, Holland, Germany, New Zealand and Australia, and performed sold out shows in the USA. They’ve also regularly appeared on major Australian festivals including Falls Festival, The Big Pineapple Festival, Lost Paradise, Hills are Alive, Festival of the Sun and Party in the Paddock.

‘Lonely Times’ is out now

Created by old high school friends and Wellington Ex-pats Jacob Howard and Chris Lemeulu, the pair reconnected over a few beers watching an All Blacks game, lamenting the lack of events serving the large community of Kiwis in Melbourne.   Together Jacob and Chris started gathering the local community and business figureheads with a clear vision to make Kiwi Fest an annual celebration of Melbourne’s New Zealand community. “We began crafting an event that offered a bit of a ‘Slice of Heaven’ for both Kiwis here and anyone else who wanted to taste a little sample of New Zealand culture. It was important for us that this was community based at its heart, was 100% outdoors and captured our relaxed ethos, great products and rich culture” says Creative Director Jacob Howard.   THE MUSIC The inaugural event is to be headlined by Che-Fu, the legendary hip hop and RnB icon. With the most top ten songs of any individual in New Zealand musical history, Che-Fu is one of New Zealand’s most successful and beloved recording artists. Originally coming to attention as a founding member of the iconic Kiwi band Supergroove, Che went on to forge a solo career unrivalled in its success and the trail that it blazed not only for hip hop but Kiwi music. Audiences will also be treated to other local and Pasifika artists Including roots heavyweight Israel Starr, the soulful Iva Lamkum, beatmaker and DMC World Champion DJ SPELL, the Polynesian roots infused reggae vibes of The Refugees, and Amin Payne will be brining his G-Funk and disco sound along with very special guest vocalist and fellow Kiwi Stacey. THE FOOD Hangi boys is the story of 4 guys from the North Island showcasing their heritage and culture through traditionally cooked NZ cuisine. With over 40 years of combined experience in Hospitality internationally, living here in the renowned food capital of Australia. The unique flavour of Hangi stems from pre-colonialism days passed on through generations of Maori, it was a staple diet for many celebrations. Using spices such as horopito, fresh market produce and native wood from our homeland we aim to capture the attention of both international guests and kiwis living abroad right here in Melbourne. THE DRINK Garage Project was started in Wellington by two best mates with a passion for the good stuff. Within a few short years, they turned their microbrewery into the widely acclaimed best brewery in New Zealand. Garage Project dominated the GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers for 2019, taking out first place with its Pernicious Weed, second with its DFA, and landing a total of 25 beers on the list overall. THE CULTURE The inaugural Kiwi Fest celebrates the diverse Kiwi community with Māori and Pacific Island Cultural Performances from Ngā Mātai Pūrua, Collateral Culture and Nga Uri Whaioranga all Highlighting bringing people together through shared history and culture, learning forgotten histories and the education of traditional rites and practices. Stranger and Bunker, two of Melbourne’s most forward-thinking techno crews, will join forces for one the most exciting lineups to hit Melbourne in years. Heading to Australia to perform at the upcoming Pitch Music & Arts Festival, FJAAK, Objekt and SPFDJ is part of a small collective of niche techno artists highly sought-after across the globe. For one night only they will bring their brand of cutting edge dance music to The Bottom End for what will surely be a sell-out show. FJAAK (Live) (GER) From a Spandau-Basement experiment to a now well-established force in contemporary techno, the rise of FJAAK has seen the duo become an internationally renowned creative force. Gracing stages at global festivals ADE and Awakenings, alongside numerous slots at the Circoloco Ibiza, District 8, and techno institution Berghain, their dedicated fanbase comes in spades. With eleven singles & EPs, two albums and a couple of compilation appearances under their belt, FJAAK can look back on an extensive discography that packs quite a punch. This will be FJAAK’s Australian debut. Objekt (GER) Crossing a plethora of genres within his work, Objekt fuses electro, acid, bass, dub, and experimental into his work, while maintaining solid foundations in techno. Across his subsequent club output on labels such as Hessle Audio, Leisure System, Power Vacuum and his own imprint label, audacious sound design and meticulous arrangements have served to buckle and twist dancefloor conventions. His 150-bpm IDM opus ‘Ganzfeld’, released on a split EP with Dopplereffekt, was selected as Resident Advisor’s #1 track of 2014, while Mixmag named ‘Theme From Q’ their top record of 2017. SPFDJ (GER) Hailing originally from Sweden, SPFDJ’s beginnings were in London as part of the infamous collective Universe of Tang. Occasionally working at vicious speeds, acidic techno climes are fused with kaleidoscopic sounds, making for unique output. Alongside producer sprintf, she co-runs the Cranial Handles transmission, the System.out sound system, and the latest party coerced into life: Power Play. Drawing on the many and varied collaborative efforts at the heart of her activity, SPFDJ delivers Intrepid Skin, her label and outlet for autonomous developments. SPFDJ is as deft in moving the most debaucherous underground space as she is at opening the floor for big clubs like Corsica Studios and Oval Space. Handsome Tours is thrilled to announce the return of New York City’s Frankie Cosmos. Last in the Southern Hemisphere in 2017, Frankie Cosmos are heading back for Meadow Music Festival, as well as a string of intimate headline dates in March/April.  Originally the solo project of prolific New York City-based songwriter Greta Kline, Frankie Cosmos blossomed into a four-piece with a collection of globally acclaimed albums to their name. The group’s most recent 2019 offering, Close It Quietly (listen on Spotify, Apple and Bandcamp), is a continual reframing of the known. It’s like giving yourself a haircut or rearranging your room. You know your hair, you know your room. Here’s the same hair, the same room, seen again as something new. Close It Quietly takes the trademark Frankie Cosmos micro-universe and upends it, spilling outwards into a swirl of referentiality that’s a marked departure from earlier releases, imagining and reimagining motifs and sounds throughout the album. Kline delivers sharp observations and candid confessions via short bursts of melodious indie pop that Rolling Stone labelled "the best yet from an artist who’s spent the last few years on one of the more impressive songwriting binges in indie-pop". Frankie Cosmos’ fourth studio release is a manifestation of the band’s collaborative spirit: Greta Kline and longtime bandmates Lauren Martin (synth), Luke Pyenson (drums), and Alex Bailey (bass) luxuriated in studio time with Gabe Wax (War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes), who engineered and co-produced the record with the band. Tour Dates Friday 21 February: Glamorama, Melbourne Saturday 22 February: Tusk, Wollongong Saturday 22 February: Goodbar, Sydney In 2018, Resident Advisor referred to Man Power as ‘intergalactic house music’. That description is as close as anyone has ever come to describing his sound. In the time Man Power has existed, as an alias of Newcastle’s Geoff Kirkwood, it’s been challenging to pin down what he is all about.  One look at his impressive discography should give you an idea of what he is about musically. It includes Life & Death, Hivern Discs, Optimo Trax, ESP Institute and Correspondent, alongside his own Me Me Me and newly minted Now Now Now imprints. His club bookings include the world's best, and he has played everywhere from Panorama Bar to Glasgow's Sub Club. His debut Australian tour has been a long time coming, and this February the wait is finally over… What makes Man Power difficult to categorise is what makes him so vital - each record, each set and each remix is unique. Drawing on house, techno, Italo, disco, post-punk, new wave and beyond, Kirkwood’s ability to bend well-worn genre tropes to his own will is impressive. Occasionally, he’ll even decontextualise embarrassing pop records to rapturous responses. As with any DJ/Producer biog, this doesn’t quite work unless it contains name drops aplenty so, as a fun game, try to unearth another artist in electronic music who has had a firm thumbs up from such a disparate bunch of artists like Ben UFO, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Andrew Weatherall, DJ Harvey and DJ Bone recently… Connect with Man Power:

Nearly six years since their last Australian tour, Sebadoh are finally dragging their lo-fi slacker genius back to our shores this month! Due to demand, they’ve added a Perth show at Mojos Bar in Fremantle on Sunday 26th January and today announce local tour support acts (see listing below). With the release this year of their acclaimed return to form album Act Surprised, their first since 2013’s Defend Yourself, the band have returned to the genius that made them an essential part of every right thinking person’s record collection. On leaving Dinosaur Jr in 1988 and teaming up with old mate Eric Gaffney, Lou Barlow almost invented a new genre in rock n’ roll, signing to the seminal Seattle label Sub Pop and releasing a couple of cassette only releases that are much sought after collector’s items. Despite several line-up changes Sebadoh effectively became an outlet for Barlow’s creative efforts outside of Dinosaur Jr. As the obligatory hiatus for the first part of the 2000s kept fans wondering if they’d seen the last of them, 2007 saw Sebadoh reform to much acclaim and the promise of new recordings. That promise has now led to a second post-reformation recording, with Barlow taking time off from Dinosaur Jr to regroup with Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico to track 15 new songs last year, with Justin Pizzoferrato, the engineer behind many Dinosaur Jr albums at the helm. The studio results see Loewenstein taking the lead on his more lo-fi style musings paired against his co-conspirator’s folkier style offerings, with the band actually spending more time working on this album than many of their previous minimalist efforts. “In the past,” says Barlow, “we would write in the studio and the songs would develop on the road.“ This time, we did some rehearsals a few weeks before recording,” adds Loewenstein, “which we almost never do. So we got a chance to not use the first take and took time to finesse things, which we also don’t usually do, so that was a good step.” For their first tour down under in almost six years, with a new album under their belts and their lo-fi garage slacker pop offering the blueprint for many acts worldwide, this is a rare chance for Australian fans to enjoy their seminal sound live.

So we got a chance to not use the first take and took time to finesse things, which we also don’t usually do, so that was a good step.”

For their first tour down under in almost six years, with a new album under their belts and their lo-fi garage slacker pop offering the blueprint for many acts worldwide, this is a rare chance for Australian fans to enjoy their seminal sound live.

Banoffee has shared the second single 'Count On You' from her debut album Look At Us Now Dad out Friday 21st February via Dot Dash (AU/NZ/Asia) and Cascine (ROW). 'Count On You', a full-throttle anthem fueled by blasts of jagged synths and written at the peak of the MeToo movement, is a relentlessly upbeat declaration of solidarity with survivors. The single comes with an uplifting video. As Banoffee describes: "This video was a thrill to make. My co-director Will Mcdowell and I had a pretty ambitious vision for the budget we had, and the lead up was just as hectic as our one shoot day. Training for the fencing scenes and practicing fencing inspired choreography was so much fun and like all my videos I was so happy to be showcasing friends and their skills through my work. Loosely themed around the Lindsay version of "parent trap" this video aims to take some heavy subjects and speak about them in a light-hearted yet eerie way. Working out this balance was probably the hardest part, although falling into a frog and slug infested manky ass pond rivals it for first place. There was a lot of sweat, dirt and laughter involved in the making of this clip!" Named as one of The NME 100 and Junkee's Ones To Watch for 2020, Banoffee is a Melbourne-born, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and producer with a musically transgressive and deeply vulnerable approach to pop. She has toured with Taylor Swift on a worldwide stadium tour as part of Charlie XCX’s troupe, and represents the new wave of mutant pop bubbling up from today’s queer club underground. She has been described as one of pop music’s “recent great forward thinkers” (FACT) and is known for infectious melodies that belie more unsettling, experimental textures and beats. Look At Us Now Dad is Banoffee’s debut album, and it is an uplifting, hopeful journey that celebrates survival in the face of abuse and adversity. Featuring collaborations with SOPHIE, Empress Of, Cupcakke, Umru, and co-produced by Banoffee and Yves Rothman, it is an exciting musical hybrid of experimental club sounds and earworm pop. “Each song uses human experience to talk about more complex concepts of addiction, obsession, heartbreak, and resurrection,” says Banoffee. “Not to dwell in sadness, but to join hands.” The album was written in the two years after the artist moved to Los Angeles from Melbourne in 2017, seeking a fresh start. Meticulously retracing her steps, Banoffee examined her life with a fine-toothed comb in order to reclaim her narrative and the struggles she’d once sung about in earlier releases. Look At Us Now Dad thus tells a story of survival—of abuse, sadness, and loss—and is a testament to the possibilities of rebirth. As Banoffee puts it: “Each track is about a struggle and achievement that anyone could experience, the ones that seem so trivial. We’re all survivors for one reason or another.” Look At Us Now Dad will be available digitally and on vinyl. BANOFFEE Releases new single + video ‘Count On You’ Debut album Look At Us Now Dad out Feb 21 Supporting Wafia nationally this week

Banoffee has shared the second single ‘Count On You’ from her debut album Look At Us Now Dad out Friday 21st February via Dot Dash (AU/NZ/Asia) and Cascine (ROW).
