OLY SHERMAN releases soulful new single ‘DANCIN’ IN THE RAIN’ Touring NSW, VIC and QLD.

by the partae October 19, 2022
written by the partae

PLAY/LISTEN

Oly Sherman basks in the beauty of the everyday in latest single ‘Dancin’ in the Rain’. A beautiful, vulnerable display of strength, Oly’s sumptuous vocal tones take us on a journey of pure joy and artistry.

Speaking to his philosophy of enjoying the simple pleasures of life, Oly’s confident vocals exude a power that draws you in. Soulfully dancing over luxurious jazz instrumentation, the result is nothing short of exceptional.

Pulling aural influences from international favourites Daniel Ceasar, Omar Apollo and Loyle Carner, and closer to home with Tash Sultana, Kaiit, and Matt Corby. Sherman’s aurally decadent soundscapes are nestled in between that beautiful space of soul-fused jazz and RnB.

Slightly more stripped back then previous releases, Oly showcases his confidence in his experimentation, leaning more heavily into the late night jazz dive bar, spotlighting his vocals.

“Dancin’ In The Rain is about enjoying the little things and getting out of your own head. The rain is a symbol for doing things that aren’t necessarily comfortable at first, but doing them because of the valuable people around you, and the ultimate joy of jumping in.” Oly Sherman

‘Dancin’ in the Rain’ sees airy synths, a deliciously grooving baseline, and fluttering sporadic keys work in harmony, elevating Olys honeyed vocal tones. The shining strength of this single is the crooning, saxophone solo that brings to life the feeling of walking through Paris at midnight under spheres of illumination from weathered street lamps.

Like previous releases, ‘Dancin’ in the Rain’ was recorded at Sherman’s home studio, with final touches applied at A-Sharp Studios. The single was then refined by both Oly Sherman and engineer Daniel Natoli.

Since releasing his first single in 2017, Sherman has carved out a devout following of listeners yearning for his soul-laden songs. In that time he has seen break-out success from single ‘Homeboy’ which accumulated 120k+ streams alongside a steady fan base of monthly listeners on Spotify that hovers at around 20k, Oly Sherman has proven his dynamism in spades.

With two sold out shows at iconic Sydney venue The Lansdowne, the Newtown Festival and notable support slots for Slum Sociable, Alex The Astronaut and Matthew Young, Oly Sherman will be sharing his honeyed vocals and grooving beats with a number of shows across the country over September through to November.

by the partae October 15, 2022
written by the partae
Tickets: http://labryinto.com
Date: 28th December – 3rd January
Location: Guanacaste, Costa Rica

After a much talked about debut, Labryinto Festival is back on the stunning Coast of Guanacaste in Costa Rica this New Year. From December 28th to January 3rd it offers a unique and escapist mix of world class music music, art, gastronomy, wellness and plenty of strong sustainability initiatives with headlines such as Tale of Us, Keinemusik,  Lee Burridge, Damian Lazarus, DJ Tennis, Carlita, Trikk and many more.

Labryinto invites you into an immersive world of complex and mind blowing production with a unique creative direction. It takes place on the famous Guanacaste “Gold Coast,” which is 400 miles of coastline featuring prime beach destinations that draw surfers from across the globe for their world-class breaks. Stunning jungle, waterfalls and sea views make it an idyllic location. It is transformed with hidden party spots draped in organic and natural production, warm mood lighting and world class sound systems that bring each party to life.
Each year the festival has a new theme and this year’s is A.I. and funghis. Creative Director Melissa O explains the concept, “Over the last decades, humans have been creating species of superior beings called artificial intelligence. Now we imagine that in 20 -30 years with the help of mushrooms and other sacred plants, these AIs will acquire a higher consciousness and understanding of life which will allow them to live in harmony with nature, protecting life on this planet better than what we have ever been able to. That is what we are trying to showcase here.  Labyrinto is a window into the gestation of this new A.I. world.”

Musically, Labryinto is a forward thinking line-up with globally renowned melodic techno pair Tale of Us bringing their always evocative sound. The esteemed German crew Keinemusik also line up with their enchanting house sounds, and All Day I Dream label and party head Lee Burridge is the perfect man to summons some motherly and shamanistic house in the jungle, as is the notorious musical wizard and Crosstown boss Damian Lazarus. Add in the widescreen electronic output of Life And Death’s DJ Tennis, Turkish DJ, multi instrumentalist and producer Carlita and Trikk and you have a surefire winner.

Butterfly Effect + Thornhill + Caligua’s Horse @ Northcote Theatre, 13th October 2022

by the partae October 15, 2022
written by the partae

Photography & Words: Darren Chan

With La Nina hitting Melbourne in full force, it didn’t deter fans from attending the first of two Melbourne shows from heavyweight rockers Butterfly Effect. This was a tour that was put on hold since the pandemic. But with their recent release of “IV”, their first album in 14 years, it was an opportunity to showcase new material amongst their classics.

Prog metal favourites Caligua’s Horse opened the night with tight musical  precision and to a very receptive crowd. Thornhill had quite a number of fans at the show tonight wearing the band’s t-shirts. This is a metal band that has escalated in popularity. The band delivered an energetic live set spearheaded by the charismatic frontman Jacob Charlton as they worked through their catalog including “Raw”, “View from The Sun”, and “Casanova”.

To the IV album atmospheric opener “IV” playing, the crowd roared when Butterfly Effect took to the stage launching into “Dark Light” and the catchy “Window and the Watcher”. When someone yelled “Great to see you back boys!”, everyone was in agreement that it had been too long between shows.

To the heavy grind of “Always”, the crowd sang along in unison to singer Clint Boge. His theatrical mannerisms further shifted and shaped the mood for each song from the riff laden “Nil By Mouth“ , the melodic “Gone” to the bass line hook “Everyone Runs”. He paused a few times to thank the fans and acknowledge his gratefulness to be able to do live shows again.

The band returned for a brief encore which included the intricate new track “Visiting Hours” and tying the night with fan favourite “Reach”. The band is never one to take off after the show. They stuck around to chat to fans so in Clint’s words they “would leave the show feeling fully satisified.” They sure did!

This year’s program partners include Melbourne International Jazz Festival, ThinOzone, Finding Figaro, VU Music Agency and Kindred Band Room who have curated an incredible line-up of Contemporary, Latin, Ethio and Brazilian jazz, Classical Indian, Congolese Rumba, Chilean Folk/Rock, Afro Beat, Dub, Reggae, Folktronic, chilled Electronica, Rock, and Pop styles of music.

The key venue highlight for this year’s event is the pop-up venue Las Palmas located on the Footscray Library forecourt creating a 40/50’s inspired Latin/Cuban styled jazz bar. The team at the City of Maribyrnong wishes to transport people to a different time and country, with Ethiopian flourishes in the design referencing the Ethiopian cafes that surround the library on Barkly street.

Kicking things off at Railway Reserve on Friday 14 October West Set + Finding Figaro present Jamie Tiller (UK), Adriana and Daniel Pisano from 5pm – 11pm. The UK’s Jamie Tiller has an often unrivalled knack for rescuing a seemingly endless supply of discarded musical gems from the murky depths of the record underworlds. Jamie will perform alongside locals Adriana and Daniel Pisano who will have you dancing to traditional and contemporary sounds.

Saturday 15 October Kindred Bandroom presents Solidarity Sound System celebrating ten years of sound business and renegade resistance. A decade on and it’s time to celebrate the many sessions, collaborations and protests the sound has powered. “It’s a full-bodied, bubbly & tropical blend with a playful smidge of impish glee.”

(Bridie Tanner, Triple J) [About ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’]

Stream ‘Weekend’s Coming’
A tranquil, subtropical rainforest studio made the perfect setting for Meanjin/Brisbane-based funk/rock octet The Steele Syndicate to record their debut album ‘Weekend’s Coming’. The result is an uplifting, delightfully noise-filled listen brimming with feel-good fun, and is out to enjoy from October 14.

Encompassing the themes of work, love and happiness, ‘Weekend’s Coming’ showcases the band at their raucous and rocking best, with signature doses of funk led by plenty of horns. Each song was recorded using only analogue instruments – so every horn stab, synth note, guitar, organ or kick sound is the real deal. Frontman Steele McMahon divulges:

“I remember tracking the lead guitar line for ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’, and having this old Roland Jazz Chorus maxed to the proverbial 11, and there being so much thick noise even when the guitar was not playing, that it sounded like the studio was literally drawing breath.

While it was challenging to utilize only real instruments, in a day where nearly every sound can be achieved with the touch of a button, I think it presented a fun and creative opportunity to embrace limitations, and really allow the nuances and idiosyncrasies of analogue instrumentation to shine.”

The band’s feature album opens with the thought-provoking, sway-inducing ‘City of Dread’. It sets the scene for next track ‘Dance’ to steal the spotlight, and amp things up with plenty of brassy fanfare.

‘Stop and Stare’ pulls things back a moment to appreciate the moment you fall in love, written about frontman Steele McMahon’s now-fiancé. We’re then serenaded by the playfully percussive bossa-nova beauty of ‘Cold Without You’, but things aren’t cold for long as instrumental ‘Pimento’ delivers the sizzling heat with its disco-tinged beat and heroic horn refrain.

Next up, ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’ is an absolute party-starter, created for those who don’t believe in having too much of a good thing – until they do.

‘Dream’ joyfully takes the notion of things feeling ‘too good to be true’ and kicks it to the curb, while follow-up ‘Creek Crossing’ is a dramatic retelling of the time the band members tried to navigate rising waters amid flash-flooding.

‘Sometimes’ is a tune inspired by The Teskey Brothers‘ approach to 6/8 soul, leading into the funky ‘Fields of Strawberries’ which really brings the jam and spreads it on thick.

The album’s title track is a desperate plea for the weekend and everything it represents. ‘Weekend’s Coming’ is a swoon-worthy slow-burn slice of indie rock that erupts in cathartic release with an uplifting and majestic singalong outro.

Ending on a mellow anthem for the perfectionists, ‘Okay To Just Be Okay’ muses that – ‘you don’t have to always be perfect, sometimes it’s okay to just be okay’.

The Steele Syndicate feel most at home with a live audience in the palm of their hands, so their list of previous shows is long. They’ve played spots at Woodford Folk Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Mitchell Creek and Tablelands Folk Festivals, as well as headlining Summer Sounds in Naarm/Melbourne. They’ve also made fans at Double J, Australian Music Scene, AAA Backstage, MTV, The Music, MilkyMilkyMilky, LiveWire AU, Scenestr, The Point, as well as a host of community radio stations.

Hang in there because ‘Weekend’s Coming’ will be out on October 14. The band are also in the midst of their tour, with a couple of dates still to go to get lost in the raw energy of their feel-good funk IRL!

Trailblazing rapper and producer Agung Mango today shares his feverishly anticipated EP, MAN ON THE GO. LISTEN HERE

For the Naarm/Melbourne-based artist, MAN ON THE GO arrives after years spent quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting artists to bubble up from Australia’s underground rap scene. Across his two previous EPs Son Of Agung and OPENFORBUSINESS, Agung Mango’s mainstream stature has risen steadily in time, having landed festival slots and collaborations with tastemakers including Genesis Owusu, 1300 and Lucianblomkamp.

A heavy-hitting R&B album that constantly tests the borders of the genre, MAN ON THE GO flexes his dexterous, free-flowing lyricism and welcomes a level of introspection that makes the EP’s vulnerability so striking. Of the EP he shares, “MAN ON THE GO is an experiment with pop music and displays a more polished version of myself. The goal was to create something out of my comfort zone.

The EP explores the theme of duality, and the ups and downs I experienced throughout the process of making it. Something that I feel like many artists go through on their journeys. The project is both reflective and definitive of who I was at the time of creating this music, and is a great example of the constantly evolving Agung Mango – a testament to the EP title MAN ON THE GO”.

Across the seven tracks we see Agung Mango piece together a whirlwind yet cohesive sound that takes sonic cues from an underground, future-leaning production that moves through flows and cadences like no one else. From his steadying releases ‘RUNAWAY’ and ‘GUAP POP (ft. Genesis Owusu)’, Agung Mango conjures on sounds of previous releases and expands on his creative exuberance in a reflection of his artist career so far. We see him speak on the sad reality of addiction in ‘IN2DEEP!’ before delving into the undeniable bond between two people in an a81yann-featured ‘INTERTWINED’. We then turn to ‘foRREst (ft. MAMMOTH)’, ‘MISERABLE MAN’ and ‘HEADBACK’, all of which respectively look towards mental illness and the trials and tribulations of home, city life and nature in his most honest and raw form.

Since his debut in 2017, Agung Mango has cultivated a following across triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN FM, NME, Acclaim, 10 Magazine, Music Feeds, Complex Australia and Pilerats amongst others, shared stages with JID, Genesis Owusu, WIKI, Milan Ring and more, plus festivals including BIGSOUND and Laneway Festival. Having kicked off earlier this month, Agung Mango has also embarked on his biggest Australian tour yet, with tickets on sale now. written by the partae
After a long Covid enforced hiatus since their last Australian Myer Music Bowl show in March of 2020 with the legendary New Order, global electro pop stars Cut Copy, finally return home performing their first headline show in five years at Melbourne’s beautiful heritage listed Northcote Theatre on Friday December 16th with special guests, Glass Beams & RONA.

Coinciding with the recently released stunning limited vinyl boxed set ‘Collected Works 2001/2011’ tickets for this show will be on sale Monday 17th October at 12.00midday from Moshtix

In the words of Cut Copy member, Dan Whitford …

“We are very excited to be playing our first headline show in Melbourne in over 5 years. As a band we started out here and cut our teeth playing local gigs so now that half of the band lives overseas and most of our touring is spent in other countries it definitely holds special significance to us to return to and play to a home crowd. We’re also excited to be performing some current favorites of Melbourne’s music scene in Glass Beams and Rona. Both have been real highlights of the past year and a half for me. So as well as being a rare opportunity for us to play in Melbourne, with those support acts it promises to be an excellent night of music from start to finish.”

MayhemTom – Play Toff Melbourne Tonight 13 October!

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?
I started with violin in primary school, moved to drums, piano, music theory and guitar in high school and beyond.

Please tell us how MayhemTom first came to be:
I started as a bass player vocalist, but moved to vocals alone as we got serious in a funk/rock band. The band was called Electric Mayhem, which is where Mayhemtom came from literally. I decided to put together songs for an album and came back to that name after trying to a few other names, only to find they were all taken!

What’s been happening recently with MayhemTom?
I have just released an album on streaming services, there is a vinyl edition on the way and we have been rehearsing for an Album launch taking place later this week.

Your album ‘The Art Of Flying While Falling’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
It is an amalgamation of styles including straight Indie rock artists like Radiohead and The National to more folk/singer songwriters like Paul Kelly and Sufjan Stevens. The songwriting came from a period of stress and burnout during work as an oncologist. I hadn’t played regularly or written anything for over 15 years prior. The sounds are largely organic instruments including drums, piano, strings, guitar. But I love electronic music too and there are some synth sounds blended in too.

How did you go about writing?
Alot of the song came from moods/poetry which were put to chords. Previously I built songs around chords and I always drifted away from standard I, IV, V chords or threw in weird dissonant chords and pulled melodies to match the chords. For this, I allowed the melodies in my head to find the chords, so it is a bit more accessible but there are also some complex arrangements. Even time signatures, such as in the track Alone, which switches between 5/4 and 4/4 was built to fit the lyrics.

What does this album mean to you?
It’s an emotional outlet and what I had dreamt of doing when I first started playing in bands. Getting back to music has been rediscovering myself.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
I gathered together some professional musicians (Maria Moles drums, Peter Burgess bass, Paul Zubrinich keys) and recorded in a studio in Melbourne called Oaklands. The album was produced by an experienced producer Dusty Teal. The initial recording occurred in May 2021, but we were hampered by several COVID lockdowns. So while the bass, drums and some piano was done then, the rest we pieced together over several sessions later in 2021/2022. Some were back in the studio, the synths were done from home. The vocals were tracked in the producer’s home studio. The strings and backing vocals were done in separate studio sessions.

How did you approach the recording/production process?
I put together some complicated demos with the instrumentation I was after tracked on synth including the string parts. We worked on them as a band and pieced together the arrangements to suit the music and that’s what we took into the recording studio to put down. I then added synths, guitars and flourishes towards the end. The final mix was then mastered using Cloudbounce an AI service.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
My favourites mix currently has Josh Pyke, Talking Heads, Spacey Jane, Gang of Youths and Courtney Barnett. But an album I have on repeat ATM is Samora Pinderhughes “Grief”.

What do you like to do away from music?
I am a busy oncologist, so I deal with a lot of grief and death. Which is why finding my back to music has been so therapeutic.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We are looking at playing a bit more following the album launch including some local gigs as well as some smaller festivals over summer.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I don’t really have a favourite food, but I pretty much love most South Indian curries my mum cooks. The band have a bit of history hanging out at pubs around Brunswick such as the Rainbow Hotel, The Standard or The Rose, so it’s always nostalgic heading back there.

HUNTLY Sign to Dot Dash / Remote Control + Release new single & video ‘Undertage’

by the partae October 13, 2022

Emotional dance music pioneers Huntly meld UK garage, breakbeat, electronic-pop and alternative R&B in their high-tempo new single ‘Undertage‘. It arrives alongside news of their signing to Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.

In Huntly’s signature polished and meticulous production style, the Melbourne-based duo fuse driving DnB breaks with silky R&B vocals and vulnerable lyricism on this track. On the subject matter, ‘Undertage’ is a unique insight into moments of pure happiness that come with newfound crushes and friendships. It also demonstrates Huntly’s exploration of intimacy in all forms; platonic is as important as romantic, and a love for your friends is equally as crucial as those feelings of deep love we can feel for romantic partners. Vocalist Elspeth Scrine expands saying “I wrote Undertage when I was overseas before the pandemic hit, in a steamy Berlin club that the track is named after. It has samples I recorded on my phone, outside the club and from hazy uber pool rides (remember those?). ‘Undertage’ is about that energy you get from a crush when you meet someone and wonder if you might end up together… when it’s all open and full of possibilities.”

They continue with how the visualiser came about, saying “It only made sense to us to make a visualiser for this song that compiled together video footage from our favourite club spaces here in our own community. It is a clip filled with the late night/early morning dancefloors that have held us, and the people who have healed us.”

Between Elspeth Scrine and Andrew Huhtanen McEwan there exists a strong creative partnership, one that has been built upon from years of friendship. This friendship has bred an intuitive and unique artistry; perfectly exemplified on the band’s acclaimed 2019 debut album, Low Grade Buzz. Its arrival in 2019 was a touchstone moment for Huntly; the album bringing domestic and global recognition for the act, and landing with impact. Low Grade Buzz, bold and striking in its tone and execution, positioned Huntly as a dynamic new force in the Australian music community. As the album cycle continued, the industry responded: Huntly earned nominations for the esteemed Australian Music Prize (2019), and at the AIR Awards (2020) for Best Independent Dance Album alongside industry figures such as Flume.

Acclaim came from radio and press tastemakers alike; Low Grade Buzz was named 3RRR’s Album of the Week while singles enjoyed premiere opportunities via triple j, as well as rotation adds across Australian channels including FBi Radio, MTV, SYN and Rage. Internationally Huntly’s music drew praise from outlets like Stereogum, Noisey and as part of Anthony Fantano’s weekly ‘Best Tracks’ round up on The Needle Drop. The release also saw Huntly featured as a Rising Artist by Vinyl Me Please, a placement marked by an exclusive vinyl release of Low Grade Buzz throughout North America. With singles featuring across countless Spotify editorial playlists, and a feature as Apple Music’s ‘Best New Artist Of The Week’, Low Grade Buzz swiftly garnered over one million streams and amassed widespread praise from industry and the loyal music community alike.

On the live front, Huntly have supported the likes of pop heavyweights such as G-Flip and experimental luminaries like Laurel Halo. Their dynamic live presence has graced the stages of queer clubs, to Melbourne Fashion Festival, from Mardi Gras, Midsumma, and Grampians Music Festival, all the way to YPSIGROCK Festival (Sicily).

Join Huntly as they cry on the many dance floors with ‘Undertage’.
