Presented by the First Nations owned and operated Gaba Musik, two one-off, multi-act music and culture events BLAKTIVISM and PASIFIX will celebrate Australia’s proud First Nations and Pacific Islander communities at Live at the Bowl next month.
In 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States made headlines and proliferated around the globe. It connected with activists in Australia who have long been speaking out about our own unique history of colonialism and how this affects our modern identity as a country. These Blak voices are on the rise.
Curated by Airileke and Deline Briscoe, Artistic Directors of Gaba Musik, these two events are a direct response to the global dialogue around the Black Lives Matter movement and Australia’s response to Indigenous sovereignty. By centring Blak voices, these events address the lack of Australian Pacific and First Nations cultural representation in the Australian performing arts fabric.
“The artists across these two major events are representative of the most exciting Pacific music in Australia, and some of the most outstanding voices of First Nations Australia,” say Artistic Directors of Gaba Musik, Airileke and Deline Briscoe.
On Saturday 3 April, BLAKTIVISM will bring together living legends and rising voices of First Nations political activism. Featuring Yothu Yindi, Bart Willoughby, Tasman Keith, Emma Donovan, Deline Briscoe, Allara, Kee’ahn, Sorong Samarai and Ziggy Ramo, the line-up represents voices from across generations. BLAKTIVISM begins with a Woi Wurrong led ceremony called Mundanai which means ‘embrace’; a cleansing ceremony for the year that has been and an acknowledgement of the pain of the past 200 years.
Then on Saturday 10 April, PASIFIX is an all-ages celebration of the incredible lineage of culture, music and tradition from Pacific artists across the archipelago. Featuring the renowned vocals, tight beats and big pop sounds of Ngaiire, viral hip-hop drill crew No Money Enterprise (NME) and the new boys of Aussie-Poly rap STNDRD; Pacific artists who are having an unmistakable impact on the Australian contemporary music scene.
Opening the evening will be the PASIFIX All Stars under the direction of Airileke – one of the Pacific’s leading musical identities. Fijian multi-instrumentalist Kaivili is joined by the Pasefika Vitoria Choir, the Drums of the Pacific and more special guests to be announced. Hosts for the evening will be Efeso (Fez) Faanana (Briefs Factory International) and Thomas (Kween Kong) Fonua (Haus of Kong).
PASIFIX has been made possible by supporters of the Arts Centre Melbourne Recovery Fund and is co-presented by Asia TOPA.
Stand up and join in what will be two extraordinary performances of cultural awakening at Live at the Bowl.
Gaba Musik is a First Nations owned and operated company, launching with BLAKTIVISM and PASIFIX. In Gugu Yalanji “Gaba” means rain and in Papua New Guinea “Gaba” means drum.

SUPPORT FOR ‘WHITE NOISE’
“Charged bursts of captivating alt-rock-meets-punk-pop that sits in-line with long-time influences from Sonic Youth and Savages.”
Pilerats (AUS)
“Teeth bared, Second Idol standing up with some fire in the belly here.”
Dave Ruby Howe – triple j Unearthed (AUS)
“The punk spirit is strong in this one! sorry, didn’t mean to sound like Yoda, but yeah there’s a confidence and stick it to the man type attitude pulsing through this.”
Declan Byrne – triple j (AUS)
Following on from the release of their critically praised debut single ‘White Noise’, Sydney-based alternative-rock trio Second Idol have just returned with the striking accompanying video clip – directed by Olivia Costa.
Shot in an abandoned warehouse studio in Lilyfield, Sydney, the video clip follows two men wrestling, fighting and dancing, exploring the tracks’ central themes of conflict between femininity and masculinity. As the clip unfolds, the contrast between the bands uniform like outfits and the two main characters sets the stage for the growing tension and violence.
Lead singer Kate Olivia talks about the process behind the clip:
“We filmed this in 40-degree heat late last year, which is incredibly ironic given what we’re wearing in the clip. It used to be an old car factory, and the room we filmed in felt a bit like an abattoir and had a very sinister feel about it. In between takes we were running to stick our faces in front of fans and portable air conditioning units. Given the extreme circumstances, it was an insane effort by all involved and we had an amazing crew who looked after us and were absolute troopers.”
Second Idol consists of Kate Olivia, Theia Joyeaux and Maxine Gillon, who take inspiration from alternative-rock luminaires Savages, Placebo and Sonic Youth. After launching ‘White Noise’ to a rapt crowd at Frankies Pizza on February 27, the band will continue their run with a performance at Mardi Gras for Queer As Fvck in early March and supporting August Auzins at The Factory Theatre.
Since release, the track has seen support from Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, RTR, 4ZZZ, 2SER, Edge Radio and The Faction. It’s also been embraced by blogs Pilerats, The Music, Temporary Dreamer, Something You Said and Milky.
Outside of the band, the trio are proud members of Sydney’s LGBTQIA community and work with organisations such as Queer As Fvck, as well as queer and mental health charity Baylin’s Gift, located in lead singer Kate Olivia’s hometown of Kempsey on the Mid North Coast of NSW. “I’ve experienced prejudice and negativity in relation to my gender, sexuality and cultural background, so I’m reflexively a supporter of minority groups and the pursuit of equality” Kate adds.

“Your Girl Pho has her own thing going on and it’s a damn good thing if you ask me” – Declan Byrne, triple j
“Welcome Your Girl Pho as she joins the upper echelon of Western Australian talent, and commences her journey to becoming a fully-fledged national name” – Pilerats
“Captivating until the last second” – LEFUTUREWAVE
“”I’m a new bitch in an old habitat” – that line is exhilarating and Your Girl Pho delivers the whole package with striding confidence.” – Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed
Today, Perth based vocalist/producer Your Girl Pho serves listeners a slice of perfect pop chaos, unveiling her latest single ‘Co Star’ alongside its accompanying music video, the first taste of her upcoming debut EP.
Co-produced with Matt Bartlem (Lastlings, Boo Seeka) who conjures the track’s dreamy atmosphere, ‘Co Star’ is a sophisticated pop anthem inspired by the hyper-personalised astrology app of the same name. Specifically the app’s user specific yet totally vague push notifications, which Phoebe received one day (during a mercury retrograde) prompting the hook of the song, “someone wants what you’ve got”.
“I wanted to release an upbeat, fun song capturing that sure and confident feeling of love,” Phoebe details, “the chorus is supposed to hit you with confidence to go up to your crush and tell it how it is!”
Right off the back of her 2020 triple j premiered single ‘Surrender’ and current nominations for ‘Best Live Electronic Act’, ‘Best Pop Act’ and ‘Most Popular Live Act’ at the West Australian Music Industry Awards, Your Girl Pho shows absolutely no signs of slowing down in 2021. She’ll be playing shows in Melbourne in March at Small Time and Colour.
BIOGRAPHY
Your Girl Pho is the vivacious on stage persona of Perth based vocalist/producer Phoebe Gunson. In a short time she racked up a slew of coveted support slots with the likes of Post Malone, The Avalanches, E^ST, Kllo, Alice Ivy & spots on acclaimed festivals Groovin’ The Moo, Falls Festival, Laneway, Listen Out, FOMO, Festival Vaiven (Mexico), Music Matters (Singapore), & in 2019 performed her first North American shows when she appeared on the prestigious Canadian Music Week lineup.
The power, sass and closeness of Pho’s voice is bigger than the limitations of genre, and in 2019 Acid Stag acknowledged her ability to experiment with her sound, referring to her single ‘Don’t Wanna’ as an “extremely impressive cross-genre offering that will leave you gobsmacked.” The crown jewel in her fizzing, elasticated blend of genres, Pho’s “soulful vocals” (NYLON) have enjoyed airplay with triple j, Beats 1, FBi Radio, RTRFM, 4ZZZ and more – via her own work as well as collaborations with electronic producers Palais, Tayrell and Ukiyo.
Often backed by her 4-piece band, consisting of drums & two saxophones, Pho’s warm, dynamic vocals and playful attitude certainly command the room. Acknowledgement of her enthralling live show was received in 2019 when she won the West Australian Music award for ‘Best Live Electronic Act’. Following on from a huge year in 2019 which included acclaimed releases ‘Five-Thirty PM’ and ‘Don’t Wanna’, which sat at #1 in the AMRAP metro download charts nationally, it’s no surprise she was snapped up by Untitled Group’s tastemaker label Daily Nightly in June of 2020.
The beginning of 2021 will see Pho ready her debut EP whilst continuing to perform shows in her home state of Western Australia.

Karnivool have regrettably cancelled all shows outside of Western Australia on their scheduled national tour. The Decade of Sound Awake Tour will be replaced by a ticketed live stream event, with details to be announced soon.
STATEMENT FROM KARNIVOOL:
We are sick to our stomachs to announce all Decade of Sound Awake shows outside of Western Australia have to be cancelled.
When we were forced to move the tour for a second time, we were optimistic that shows would be able to proceed normally, safely and in the way we had envisioned them. With further rounds of border closures, limited capacities and other show restrictions it is clearly, regrettably, no longer viable to put on the events we want and you deserve for holding onto your ticket for all this time!
This album means so much to us and the tour warrants full production, epic visuals and sweaty singalongs, things that just cannot happen in the middle of a pandemic. Believe us, we have looked at more options than an Aldi shopper.
The sold out Fremantle shows can and will happen, albeit in a slightly altered format on March 12 & 13.
In response to cancelling the East Coast shows, we are going to be presenting a live stream event of the Decade of Sound Awake which means folks in the rest of the world will get to see the show as well.
For everyone at the East Coast shows, your ticket agency will be in contact with your refunds.
Live stream tickets will go on sale soon.
Please accept our unreserved and heartfelt apology we could not make this tour possible, we honestly tried everything we could and hope to make it up to everyone in the future
Until then, stay safe and stay well.

Australia’s indie-folk darling Julia Stone will be bringing her soulful tunes to the Mornington Peninsula on Labour Day long weekend with Portsea Hotel announcing the singer-songwriter’s performance for Sunday, March 7.
A casualty of Melbourne’s snap five-day lockdown, the rescheduled show is ‘take two’ on the revival of live music within regional Victoria, with Portsea Hotel set to release a stellar lineup of acts over the coming months.
Portsea Hotel General Manager Felicity Muller said Australian musicians will play a pivotal role in reigniting the entertainment industry and boosting regional economies as international acts remain off the cards for the foreseeable future.
“Following the extended shutdown of hospitality venues last year, we’re gearing up for an eventful year full of live music and entertainment and what better way to kickstart it than with the much-loved Julia Stone.
“We have such talented artists within Australia and we’re excited to be able to spotlight both established and emerging talent at Portsea Hotel,” she said.
Presented by local brewery Colonial Brewing Co, the show coincides with the upcoming launch of Julia Stone’s new album, Sixty Summers.
Following the debut of Unreal, Break and Dance in 2020, a broody and smooth track featuring that video clip starring Danny Glover and Susan Sarandon, Julia Stone’s latest album marks her first solo record since she dropped By the Horns in 2014.
No longer content to merely explore the wildernesses of folk and indie-rock, Sixty Summers, Stone’s third solo outing, finds the celebrated songwriter diving headfirst into the cosmopolitan, hedonistic world of late-night, moonlit pop.
Tickets are available to purchase via
https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/julia-stone-presented-by-colonial-brewing-co-at-portsea-hotel-tickets-138202115247 with each ticket purchased to receive a free Colonial Brewing Co can.
Those who had purchased tickets to the original show have automatically been transferred to the new date.
