The National Gallery of Victoria has announced the second edition of the landmark, city-wide exhibition, Melbourne NOW, which will be centred at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia in 2023. The exhibition will mark the ten-year anniversary of the inaugural 2013 exhibition which was a bold and unprecedented survey of some of the most exciting local contemporary practitioners. Melbourne NOW will again highlight the latest art, architecture, design and cultural practice shaping the cultural landscape of Melbourne. The NGV will dedicate an initial $1.5 million commitment to acquire, commission and present new works by local Victorian artists, designers and architects. In a timely announcement, new works by Victorian artists will begin to be actively acquired and commissioned beginning this year and will continue for the next three years, where the works will be premiered as part of the 2023 exhibition. ‘The NGV is delighted to be able to support our local creative community with the second iteration of Melbourne NOW. We know new and significant works will be created by Victorian artists and designers for this exhibition, which will celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of our creative sector,’ said Tony Ellwood AM, Director, National Gallery of Victoria.  “Embraced by Victorians and visitors alike, the original 2013 Melbourne NOW exhibition was a landmark presentation of the most exciting art and design being made in one of the world’s most creative cities. Ten years on, Melbourne NOW 2023 is set to be an equally momentous event, while playing an important role in the post-COVID recovery of our creative sector. Although we'll need to wait a while to see the exhibition, the NGV will start investing in the work and careers of local artists now - when they need it most,” Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley. Celebrating new and ambitious local art and design, Melbourne Now will cross a range of contemporary disciplines including fashion and jewellery, painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, video, performance, printmaking and publishing. The exhibition will also mark the second edition of the hugely popular ‘Design Wall’ showcasing work by dozens of the city’s most innovative design practitioners, as well as popular NGV Kids interactive projects.  Bold in scale, Melbourne Now will be displayed throughout all levels of The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, including permanent collection galleries, showcasing new works and commissions by emerging, mid-career and senior practitioners as well as local collectives, many presenting for the first time in Australia’s most visited art gallery. At the heart of Melbourne Now will be a collaborative approach to the celebration of Melbourne’s artists and designers, working closely with a range of community, cultural and educational partners. In 2013, the first edition of Melbourne Now delivered a history-making exhibition at the NGV that surveyed the enormous breath of artistic talent in the local community. Marking the first time the NGV exhibited designers alongside visual artists, the exhibition was an overwhelmingly inclusive experience offering free entry to NGV visitors. Ten years later, the next edition of Melbourne Now will again offer free entry to NGV audiences and be complemented by an extensive public program and an exhibition catalogue providing further insights into unique aspects of the exhibition. Melbourne Now will take place in early 2023 at NGV Australia with further information to be announced soon.

NEW SINGLE + MUSIC VIDEO ‘EVERYWHERE YOU’RE NOT’ Feat. DANTE KNOWS + SINGLE LAUNCH SOLD OUT SECOND SHOW ADDED

by the partae September 4, 2020
written by the partae

DIY Australian indie-pop artist RACKETT drops new electronic single ‘Everywhere You’re Not’ featuring NY rapper Dante Knows, co-written, produced and mixed by Dave Hammer (Lime Cordiale, Mia Rodriguez), and mastered by Andrew Edgeston (Amy Shark, Tia Gostelow).

Beat driven and bass-heavy, the single punches into a huge dance drop out of a euphoric, stripped back chorus. Featuring 16 bars of rap by NY born, SYD based rapper, Dante Knows, the single is another reveal of what RACKETT fans can expect from her debut mini-album due for release in late November 2020.

“‘Everywhere You’re Not’ is about freedom and liberation from an ex-lover. It’s a realisation that the world is a big place full opportunities and the awakening of possibilities from the limitations of staying in one place, with one person. As a massive Dante Knows fan I was thrilled to have him on the single, I saw him perform in Sydney in late 2019 and have been following his music ever since. I think he’s one of the most talented artists I’ve discovered and as the first feature I’ve ever released, it’s a big moment for me” – RACKETT

For the music video RACKETT teamed up with up and coming Sydney director, Murli. Shot at Archie’s Brother Arcade and Tokyo Sing Song in Sydney, the music video was inspired by ASAP Rocky’s L$D. Styled and with creative direction by RACKETT,  the Sydney artist once again flexes her DIY approach and produces an acid-washed, neon popping feast for the eyes.

RACKETT’s single launch presented by BLOOM SOLD OUT with a second show just announced.

TOM SNOWDON COVERS KYLE MINOGUE'S 'CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD' ANNOUNCES CHANNEL EP

TOM SNOWDON COVERS KYLE MINOGUE’S ‘CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD’ ANNOUNCES CHANNEL EP

by the partae September 2, 2020
written by the partae

Mparntwe/Alice Springs artist Tom Snowdon is releasing his first solo material in the form of EP Channel.

As a child, one of Snowdon’s favourite records was the covers album Messenger by Yorta Yorta artist Jimmy Little. He thought the songs were all Little’s, and it’s been a collection he’s returned to over the years. At the urging of a friend earlier this year, Snowdon has created a collection of his own cover versions – both as a nod to the influence of Little and as a way to transition into creating music solo, after a career-to-date of working collaboratively with bandmates and co-writers. As evidenced by these haunting versions of ‘Two Weeks’ and ‘Unchained Melody’ it’s clear Snowdon can take a song and make it his own.

Whether paying homage to the singers who most influenced him or stepping out of his lane, Snowdon followed his voice and recorded tracks that just felt good to sing, and carried a curious atmosphere he could explore. Some of his favourite singers include Björk, Nina Simone, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and Mark Hollis (Talk Talk). “They’re mesmerising for me because they take listeners on a journey with their voices. They’re deeply instrumental and rich with emotion, so the words they sing take on weight and power.”

The first track we’ll hear is an Australian classic ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head‘, released by Kylie Minogue in 2001. It has a bass line like something out of a Timbaland track, paired with earthy percussion and watery piano. Snowdon’s vocals wrestle the pressure and desperation of the story, layering his voice to thicken the headiness of obsession. Listen HERE.

Says Snowdon “I wanted to push myself to explore spaces I’d not normally work in and also to have fun with the arrangements. That Kylie track is such an Australian classic but is probably a bit outside the space in which I usually work … But everyone knows that song. The challenge putting it together, as with any cover, was keeping the soul of what’s special about the original but also freely interpreting it.”

‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head‘ by Tom Snowdon is out now, buy/stream it here.
For our friends at community radio, you can also download the track via AMRAP here.

The single is out 2nd September
The EP will be released 7th October

BRUNSWICK MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2021 – EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST OPEN NOW!

by the partae August 28, 2020
written by the partae

After an abrupt stop and a long pause, Moreland City Council is gearing up to hit play on Brunswick Music Festival again in March 2021. Things are going to look, feel and potentially sound, different. This is the new normal after all, but it’s the re-imagining that makes it so exciting. So, where to from here?

To accomodate for COVID-19 restrictions, the BMF team will be keeping things as flexible as possible while still finding ways to deliver special collaborations and events and fantastic opportunities for local artists, venues and audiences – dedicated and excited to bring the relief of live music to you in whichever way they can.

Since the needle skipped on this year’s event, the world as we know it has been turned upside down. Now more than ever, music feels essential and the tenets that Brunswick Music Festival is built on – neighbourhood and community, inclusivity, diversity and sustainability along with creating a sense of place and safe spaces – seem less like ideals and more like non-negotiables.

With the confinement cultivating a hotbed of creativity, the BMF team are keen to pick up what you want to put down by providing a platform for your audacious ideas, born under the cover of isolation, to be liberated through presentation in their next festival.

They want to work with you to realise your multifaceted, music-based vision in a special one-of-a-kind festival show, in all its boldness and daring, as it speaks to the new world we find ourselves living in.

They also want to hear from musicians, music groups, bands, ensembles or venues in the Brunswick area, who wants to be involved in the 2021 festival.

Local legend and champion of the music community Emily Ulman will once again take charge of expertly crafting the 2021 program, which is set to comprise a collective exhale, a healthy dose of togetherness, a huge cup of joy and some really, really, really great live music experiences.

BMF X ONE-OF-A-KIND FESTIVAL SHOW EOI

What’s your big idea? Your out-of-the-ordinary live music show concept that is oh, so excellent. The kind of “hell yeah” moment that people will lose their minds over.

The BMF team are looking to co-produce your one-of-a-kind festival show that:
  • Is presented in postcode 3056, 3055 or 3057
  • Speaks to current issues and trends both in the world at large and the contemporary music landscape
  • Champions the festival tenets:
    • Neighbourhood and community
    • Inclusivity, diversity and sustainability
    • A sense of place
    • Safe spaces
  • Engages with their priority communities (women and gender diverse, ATSI, people with a disability, migrant and refugee, and LGBTQI+)
  • Fosters local audiences, their existing audience or brings new audiences to the festival
  • Can be flexible and respond to COVID-19 restrictions as required

Your one-of-a-kind festival show can comprise live music and performance, be a happening, an exhibition, activation, workshop, talk, industry development idea or any other form of expression that brings together your original ideas to make something entirely new that would find a perfect outlet in a festival context.

It can be many things – conceptual, fantastical, multi-sensory, wonderful, colourful, collaborative, unconventional, extraordinary, thought provoking, awe-inspiring, moving or straight up entertaining.

Examples from previous years include:

  • Dolly: A Tribute – a night of re-interpreted classics and rarities from the Queen of Country courtesy of five incredible Melbourne musicians that had the whole room dancing in the aisles
  • Seen and Believed – an exhibition of photo-documentation of Melbourne’s diverse and intricate underground music scene curated by Naomi Lee Beveridge
  • Undone at 31 – Martin Frawley’s solo album launch that happened 21 times over 21 nights in a Sydney Road shopfront converted into the artist’s bedroom with surprise special guests nightly
  • Brunswick Music FEASTival – a tasty sold out show that featured a degustation of six epic food themed bands
  • Music in Exile/Bedroom Sucks presents Music at Home – a laid back afternoon of music, poetry and food, centred around ideas of place, identity and international displacement

The festival team are open to different models of partnership, so be specific about what you need to make your dream materialise. This might be cold hard cash, production and technical support, or assistance with audience development. All events presented will benefit from the festival marketing campaign.

Before applying, please contact Amber Stuart – Brunswick Music Festival Executive Producer at festivals@moreland.vic.gov.au or on 9240 2376 to discuss your idea.

APPLY ONLINE HERE
Please note: This EOI is not a call out for performers, bands, artists or community groups. The BMF team are specifically seeking ideas for curated one-of-a-kind festival shows that feature a specific theme and concept, multiple artists, speakers or activities. Moreland-based performers, bands, artists, community group and venues interested in getting involved in the 2021 festival, please check out the BMF X MORELAND COMMUNITY EOI BELOW.

BMF X MORELAND COMMUNITY EOI

Calling all musicians, bands, community groups and venues

Do you or any of your bandmates live, work or study in Moreland? Are you a member of a Moreland-based community music group or a school with an awesome music program? Are you a local venue that presents live music? The festival team want to know who’s out there and who’s keen to be involved with BMF 2021!

For 2021, things will be done a little differently, focusing the call out on uncovering and discovering the incredible talents that lie closest to home. They’re looking for solo artists, bands, choirs, orchestras and more plus any local venues who want to be a part of the 2021 BMF program.

Your expression of interest does not guarantee a spot in the festival but could lead to being programmed for indoor shows, outdoor line-ups, surprise locations and more, or your venue featuring in the 2021 program. If you have a particular idea about where you would like to perform or what you would like to do, they’d love to hear about that too!

LUCA BRASI DROP NEW TRACK DYING TO FEEL ALIVE, SELL OUT ACOUSTIC TOUR

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae

Luca Brasi have released their new single Dying to Feel Alive, out today via Cooking Vinyl Australia.

With this new track, Tasmania’s favourite sons have now delivered the third taste of new music taken from a forthcoming Luca Brasi album. Frontman Tyler Richardson describes Dying to Feel Alive as, “a reflection on resting on your laurels, but also trying to feel positive about good things, and taking stock. Pressing pause feels impossible most of the time, running myself ragged is the only time I even think about giving myself a break. Gotta have a second to feel the sun on your face when you can grab it.”

As a precursor to the new music, Luca Brasi recently announced they’ll be grabbing their acoustic guitars (aka “coward sticks”) for a special run of intimate live shows in their home state of Tasmania. Taking in Hobart, Launceston, and the boys’ hometown of St. Helens, the band announced the gigs on their socials earlier this month, and before the day was out, had sold out a whopping eight shows across the three cities. Fellow Taswegian songwriter Kat Edwards will be joining on all shows.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets share twisted fairytale claymation video for Mr. Prism, Second Perth show announced to meet demand!

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae

Following the release of ‘Mr. Prism’ earlier this month, their first single of 2020, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets today share an adventure-filled clay animation video for the song. Created by Oliver Jones, who the band have collaborated with previously on their similarly kaleidoscopic videos, the video for ‘Mr. Prism’ takes us on a colourful journey through ‘sweetsville’, with some surprisingly dark encounters along the way.

Bounding along with maximum energy from the onset, ‘Mr. Prism’ is relentless in its approach – a fiery reminder of the type of band Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have grown into over the last few years on the road. For McEwan, the song was born out of the feverish haze only illness and a crazy tour schedule can bring: “After our last tour of Europe I had a plethora of reasons to see a doctor. First, he thought I had tonsillitis, so prescribed me penicillin, which didn’t help at all. I did Falls Festival over New Year’s and barely got through – turns out I had pneumonia. I was pushing through on all sorts of meds until someone offered me the HMS Hunter alternative and I realised no matter how I’d ever be, I could never turn one down. Mr. Prism (my sickly fun-fuelled fiend of an alter-ego) was born.”

On the creation of the video, McEwan says: “A prismatic man needs a colourful adventure, so when we were throwing ideas back & forth with Oliver it was hard to pass on an edible Claymation. All of us were in awe when he sent us through the final animation – proper cherry-on-top work!”

PRAISE FOR MR. PRISM

“Jumbo sized excellence from PPC! This is exactly the kind of daily boost we all need in our lives. Big frenetic energy and thrill that’ll have you wide awake and ready to take on the world. “
Triple J Claire Mooney

“A majestic piece of four-minute rock that captures the group doing exactly what they do best – melting faces on and off the stage”. Tonedeaf

“A warped, propulsive new single titled ‘Mr. Prism’. Anchoring around its winding rhythms and feverish textural build-ups” Music Feeds

“A supercharged firework spreading wild af but good natured vibes wherever it’s played”.
 Life Without Andy

“Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have shared their whirlwind new single Mr. Prism to fuel your soul and give you the energy you need to get through the week.” Happy Mag

“Hmmmm ok then, just pop your head in to hit us with what might be one of your best tracks to date why don’t you. Galloping full tilt and in resplendent glory.” Triple J Unearthed Tommy Faith

The first body of work since their acclaimed 2018 album -Anon., Hands Like Houses have announced their self-titled EP will be released on Friday October 23 through UNFD globally. After the release of their latest single ‘Space’ in June, the announce comes alongside the reveal of another cut from the EP.

New single ‘The Water’ premiered via triple j‘s Good Nights last night and it out everywhere now.

Vocalist Trenton Woodley explains that the single has had a special place in his heart from the moment it was written, adding that though it may not be explicit, there’s an underlying fantasy element to the track.

“I picture the protagonist as some beautiful, fantastical, strange and surreal sea creature that has come to live among us, but wants to go home,” he says. “I feel like the voice of this song is one that has done its best to make a place to belong, but knows it doesn’t, can’t or won’t, and is trying to say a heartfelt, honest goodbye.

“Of course, that’s not to say there’s not a piece of me buried in that voice. I don’t think you get to come this far in life without wondering if you really belong to this particular path you’ve found yourself on, if there’s not somewhere else or someone else you’re meant to be. The harder the times, the bigger the question becomes in your mind. When it comes down to it, it’s a song about closing doors and opening new ones.”

Hands Like Houses will feature new and fan-favourite material at their livestream event this Saturday August 29, streamed directly from their beloved hometown, Canberra. More details below.

ABOUT HANDS LIKE HOUSES EP:

Hands Likes Houses have spent over a decade defying expectations and challenging boundaries, staking their claim as one of Australia’s most acclaimed modern rock exports. With ARIA success, a triple j feature album, multiple sold out tours and legions of global fans under their belt, the band are poised to break even more ground as they step into this new decade.

Collisions, resolutions, communication and expression heavily inform the themes found on the EP, taking listeners on a deep-dive into its whirlwind writing and recording process – scars and all.

Unlike their lauded 2018 album -Anon. – created over weeks of cruisy LA writing sessions – Trenton explains that the EP’s creation took place over a tightly condensed 10 day period. Recent single ‘Space’ finds the five-piece literally grappling with emotional and spatial tension in the less-than-ideal recording environment, meanwhile EP closer ‘Wired’ finds Trenton reconciling with his own communication barriers. With its chorus catch cry of ‘Maybe I’m burned out, maybe I’m just tired… weighed down by the way I’m wired”, ‘Wired’ finds the vocalist dealing with the exhaustion of feeling constantly misunderstood.

But though colliding creativity in an intense recording environment is the story of how this EP came to life, Hands Like Houses assert that the experience has birthed their most personally raw and uninhibited work yet. Musically, it takes everything the group have become known for over their 10+ years of recording, pulses it together and births their next step forward – a gritty, bold and rock-fuelled effort that is undoubtedly their most refined to date.

The release’s collective artworks continue on the theme of expression, capturing an alternative form of communication familiar to many – AUSLAN. Though the band clarify that they don’t have personal experience using the language, they are committed to encouraging appreciation and learning of the language among their fans. In addition, the band wanted to pay a special homage to AUSLAN interpreters who have been thrust into the media spotlight through extensive bushfire and COVID-19 coverage of late.

Hands Like Houses will release their self-titled EP on Friday October 23.

Delivered Live this week brings you another incredible line up of talent with full sets from 3 amazing artists, performing live in our custom built, socially-distanced studio in Sydney. This week sees us joined by Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson, triple j faves Middle Kids, and up and coming duo, Clews.   Delivered, Live was originally created to showcase Australia’s premier talent, amplified and with full lighting as you would see it if you were at a venue, and supported by funding from the Victorian Government to ensure Victorian artists and crew were paid for their craft. While we’re currently unable to have Victorian artists attend the studio, rather than replicating home streaming events, we have moved performances to our studio in Sydney with NSW acts so we continue to deliver performances like you’re there in the band room.   The show will still be hosted by Henry Wagons, along with Myf Warhurst, and we’ll still have some of Victoria’s best comedians coming to us from their kitchens and lounge rooms. The show is still produced out of Victoria (albeit from our crew’s homes!). To ensure that the show continues to support Victorian artists and crew each week Victorian artists who were scheduled to play this season will be paid as if they were doing the show.   Bringing the laughs will be award winning comedian Nath Valvo, and our regular recap on ‘the week that was’ with Sami Shah.   Delivered, Live made its debut in April this year as a response to COVID 19 forcing the world into lockdown. The show is made available to watch free on YouTube so as to be accessible to any who choose to watch it. However, for those that can afford it, tickets are available for purchase for a range of price points, starting from as little as $20 – less than you’d pay to see most of these acts in non-pandemic times. The revenue from these tickets then goes back to the artists and the crew creating the show, plus a live music venue and crew member of each acts’ choice.       Delivered, Live Season 2, Episode 6 Saturday 29th August 7.30pm Clews Middle Kids Phil Jamieson Nath Valvo Sami Shah       Tix can be purchased here   Delivered Live can be viewed here More info here    follow on Twitter | friend on Facebook | forward to a friend

“Sonny Fodera’s one of the biggest draws in house” – MIXMAG
“Dom Dolla tops 2019’s Dancing Astronaut‘s Breakout Artist of the Year” – DANCING ASTRONAUT

Following the global success of their recent single Moving Blind, Sonny Fodera and Dom Dolla now enlist heavyweight duo Gorgon City for a Moving Blind remix ahead of the upcoming Moving Blind remix package in September.

Sonny Fodera and Dom Dolla leave Moving Blind in more than capable hands, as Gorgon City take a slice of the single’s appeal whilst adding their own signature spin. Boasting punchy synths, Gorgon City strip back the vocals and amplify the climactic riffs before catapulting into a meteoric drop enriched with the duo’s trademark sound taking Moving Blind to a whole new realm.

With the original released earlier this summer, Sonny Fodera and Dom Dolla’s Moving Blind skyrocketed with support from Pete Tong and Mistajam on BBC Radio 1, scoring full rotation of Triple J and landing no.3 on the Beatport Chart.

The Moving Blind video that followed, saw fans from all corners of the globe provide photo copier scans in lockdown for Sonny and Dom’s office party video concept. Also featuring epic tour snippets, viewers reminisced of the duo’s energetic shows from their first roadblock US tour in 2019, as well as their 2020 tour that saw the pair sell out over 10,000 tickets across The Shrine in LA, Mission Ballroom, Denver and The Midway, San Francisco.

In the meantime, Sonny Fodera and Dom Dolla bring in legendary duo Gorgon City to continue the Moving Blind journey with a stellar remix. Continuing their nonstop success in 2020, Gorgon City have added to their 1.2 billion global streams and 8 million singles sold with dance hits including Nobody with DRAMA and House Arrest alongside Sofi Tukker amassing over 16 million streams combined with House Arrest landing no.1 on US Dance Radio.

Sonny Fodera & Dom Dolla – Moving Blind (Gorgon City Remix) is out now via Solotoko / Sweat It Out.

THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN MUSIC AWARDS RETURNS FOR A TOUCHSTONE YEAR! THE 2020 SAMS SUBMISSIONS OPEN, JUDGING PANEL + SAVE THE DATE ANNOUNCED

by the partae August 20, 2020
written by the partae

The accomplishments and emergence of wonderful South Australian music over the last 12 months is set to be celebrated this year, with the South Australian Music (SAM) Awards powering ahead for 2020.

The 2020 SAM Award winners will be announced on Tuesday November 3rd 2020. A ceremony will be conducted in line with current COVID-19 safety restrictions, the format of the celebrations will be announced at a later date.

The SAM Awards remain a standout calendar moment for the South Australian music industry, as well as becoming a key date for national industry players too to keep an eye on what’s happening in SA and discover just why it has been named a UNESCO City of Music.

In 2019, the SAM Awards hit a record of voting numbers in the lead up to the gala ceremony at Adelaide University’s prestigious Bonython Hall, which saw artists including Horror My Friend, Adrian Eagle and Electric Fields come away with awards. This year’s SAM Awards looks to amplify the voices of the SA music community once more and put the spotlight on a creative community turning heads Australia wide.

Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said: “The South Australian Music Awards will once again recognise, promote and celebrate excellence in our local music industry. The Marshall Liberal Government is proud to be a major partner of Music SA and the SAM Awards. We value our state’s music sector which, not only contributes enormously to the cultural fabric of our community, but also supports hundreds of local jobs.”

Newly appointed General Manager at Music SA, Kim Roberts says “In what’s been a very difficult year for our industry, I’m really looking forward to celebrating all of the excellent music and fantastic achievements that have emerged out of SA in the last year.  It’s such a great opportunity to acknowledge the creativity and innovation that makes our community so exciting.”

As always, the SAM’s Industry and Major awards will be decided by a panel of 15 national and local judges who represent and work across various facets of the industry and are valued members of the overarching Australian music community. We are delighted to announce an exceptionally strong panel this year.

Ziggy Alberts will be playing all new material he has been creating in lockdown. “Stoked to be back at Bluesfest 2021! I love this festival and we had such a great time back in 2018. I’m looking forward to coming out strong after some time away from touring. See ya'll there!” says Ziggy Alberts.   Kev Carmody will show why he is regarded as a National Treasure. His new album, ‘Cannot Buy My Soul’ features guest appearances by Jimmy Barnes, Kasey Chambers, John Butler, The Waifs, Tex Perkins, Troy Cassar-Daley and lots more -this could be one hell of a jam!! When Blues legends RUSSELL MORRIS and IAN MOSS take to the stage the Bluesfest crowd will roar. Yorta Yorta man BRIGGS is the most powerful rapper in the country, HIATUS KAIYOTE is selling out 2000 seater venues and KIM CHURCHILL not only a current triple j favourite, he is also the most successful Bluesfest Busking competition winner who has now gone on to achieve national recognition, a record label and is touring nationally. Add MAMA KIN SPENDER and ALL OUR EXES LIVE IN TEXAS and the line-up is unquestionably a “top-shelf’ reflection of Australia’s best. Commenting on the announcement Festival Director, Peter Noble OAM says “There’s a number of all Australian line up announcements to come that includes ‘real’ headliners, Indigenous artists and Blues n Roots artists. We are setting ourselves up to put on another great Bluesfest albeit in a brand new way. There will be challenges, and we expect to be presenting a festival with a lower capacity and potentially outdoors in order to have a safe event. It is sad for us to see that a number of festivals will not go ahead. However, we are working with Government to present a safe event and be part of the return of ‘live’ music in this country. Whilst it is disheartening to hear that Woodford and Port Fairy Folk Festivals feel that the challenge of presenting is something they don’t want to take on right now, and which is totally understandable, it doesn’t mean that events cannot return, and I believe it is important for Bluesfest to be a part of that return and to help lead the way.” Bluesfest is in regular communications with Government regarding the Bluesfest COVID-19 Safety Plan that has been lodged. Having shone a light on some of our country’s finest musicians and songwriters for six weeks now – from iconic chart-toppers (Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, Kylie Minogue, Midnight Oil) to triple j stars (Illy, DMA’S, Angie McMahon, Amy Shark) and arresting newcomers (BENEE, Miiesha, Dallas Woods) – each week The Sound has delivered incredible performances, proudly captured and delivered by Mushroom Vision and the ABC.

Australian music needs to be heard. For Episode Six this Sunday – our final instalment of this first series – we’ve got yet another line-up you don’t want to miss.

Joining regulars Jane Gazzo and Zan Rowe this week are three very special guest co-hosts: 4x Grammy winner Keith Urban, who releases his 10th studio album, THE SPEED OF NOW Part 1, on 18 September. He’s joined by acting legend Jack Thompson, while we also have a special appearance by the music man himself – Molly Meldrum.

Tune in to Episode Six for performances by:

  •  Her breakout hit ‘Dance Monkey’ hit #1 in 30 countries, and was the most streamed song globally for over four months. The Sound is thrilled to welcome Tones And I performing another of her hits, ‘Never Seen The Rain’, this week
  • The only AU artist in ARIA chart history to achieve six #1 singles and two #1 albums: Guy Sebastian has sold almost four million albums to date. He performs his hit single ‘Standing With You’ inside Sydney’s historic Town Hall
  • Multi-Platinum, ARIA award-winners Bliss n Eso are one of the biggest local touring artists of the last decade. The trio is back with a blistering new single, the first taste of new music since 2017’s #1 Off The Grid
  • Coming off the back of their first ever #1 album (Akilotoa | Anthology 1994-2006), Vika and Linda show off their amazing gospel harmonies, with a killer rendition of single ‘There Ain’t No Grave (Gonna Hold My Body Down)’ – which can be heard on the duo’s album Sunday (The Gospel According To Iso), due out 11 September
  • Creating a haunting merging of living traditional culture with electronic music, multi-award winning Adelaide duo Electric Fields bring moments of breathtaking beauty and power to their cover of ‘From Little Things, Big Things Grow’, which appears on Cannot Buy My Soul: The Songs of Kev Carmody 2020 Edition. Exclusively for The Sound, they perform alongside three special guests: Missy Higgins, Jessica Mauboy and John Butler
  • With their serious love for the blues, powerhouses Josh Teskey (The Teskey Brothers) and Ash Grunwald will launch their very special project with an exclusive performance this Sunday. Tune in to find out all the details!
  • With 22 million+ streams worldwide, rising star CXLOE inked a deal to release her debut album via Sandlot Records (Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande). She joins us to perform the excellent ‘12 Steps’

“I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for Billy Thorpe,” Jimmy Barnes once told The Guardian. This week’s ‘Tribute’ segment is a celebration of the mighty Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, with a collaboration starring: Jimmy Barnes, Chris Cheney (The Living End), Mahalia Barnes, Ben Rodgers, Lachy Doley and Jackie Barnes.

Finally, with more hit singles in the ’80s than Cold Chisel, Australian Crawl or Men At Work, Mondo Rock did things their own way. Their first ever official live album, Summer of ‘81, is released 28 August – watch them on stage in Melbourne, 1984, live ‘From The Vault’.

Don’t miss Episode Six of The Sound, Sunday 23 August, 5.30pm on ABC.

‘We’re pumped to be a part of The Sound and get to perform live on the top of the iconic Sydney Tower Eye in Sydney. This was a spot that we first went to to write rhymes when Bliss n Eso was in its infancy, years and years ago. To come full circle and perform the first ever music video up there years later is just amazing’ – Bliss, Bliss n Eso

‘I’m very excited to be performing on The Sound, I’ve been watching it every week so far and am a big fan. It’s just so great to have a new show that showcases our country’s diverse and amazing talent, and its format is really original. I’m honoured to be a part of it.’ – Missy Higgins

‘As live music lovers, we’re all being confronted by this moment. The Sound connects live musicians to the audience – like the new in-between – and we’re grateful and excited to share our version of this iconic song by Kev Carmody and Paul Kelly ’ – Electric Fields

‘We’re thrilled to be performing on The Sound alongside young up-and-coming Australian talent who should be nurtured and encouraged because they are fantastic!’ – Vika & Linda

‘So great to be revealing this new project with my buddy Ash on The Sound’ – Josh Teskey, The Teskey Brothers

‘Lockdown 2.0 is a dark cloud for musicians and fans but The Sound has been the much needed silver lining! It’s so great to see live music on the TV again! I never got to see Countdown, but it seems like The Sound is bringing back that excitement about live music performance on the TV!’ – Ash Grunwald

‘Beyond excited to be on The Sound. The Australian music industry has so much to offer and I’m honoured to be invited to showcase my live performance. It’s so important that we shine light on our artists, especially during such a difficult time for people in the arts.’ – CXLOE

JOHNNY HUNTER unveil highly anticipated debut EP, EARLY TRAUMA October/November tour dates on sale now!

written by the partae

Fresh off the release of their ‘Hollow Man’ single, Johnny Hunter now celebrates the release of their debut EP, Early Trauma.

The record is the perfect snapshot of one of Australia’s most exciting new bands, operating at full force. Layered with rich tone, emotional depth and a knack for storytelling that feels years beyond their time together as a group, Early Trauma depicts Johnny Hunter at the peak of their creative strengths, leaving the listener wanting to know what’s coming next. “As young adults our talent was unparalleled in wasting opportunities with blissful ignorance. From those decisions stemmed Early Trauma. Each song on this EP is in some way an ode to wasted youth. The energy and time spent on unimportant moments, and the realisation that without those moments we would not be who we are today. It’s our way of reverse engineering the painful memories we carry from our past decisions, so we can grow, develop and with time ultimately heal those scars.” Johnny Hunter

The EP has been teased here and there with the release of ‘Try As You May’, and ‘Pain & Joy’ alongside the more recent ‘Hollow Man’, diving deep into emotive territory listeners can liken to genre pioneers including Joy Division and The Smiths, and Australian contemporaries in Kirin J Callinan, City Calm Down and Liars. Lead single ‘Innocence Interrupted’ serves as an example of the EP’s broader energy. Unafraid to play with darker sonic tones, Early Trauma mixes drama with rich storytelling.  “An ode to Winona Ryder in the 1988 movie, Heathers. The film is about a high school couple who murder their classmates; an absolute hyperbolic example of wasted youth. We wrote the song as though we were writing for the closing credits of the movie. A true ballad for Early Trauma.” Johnny Hunter

Hypnotic vocals weave around post-punk production that has been effortlessly brought together to serve each of the five tracks’ narrative. What sticks out about the songs on the Early Trauma EP is that they each can stand proudly on their own while also being able to connect together as part of a larger story.

Recorded in Sydney’s southwest at A Sharp Recording Studio with ARIA-winning producer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths), and mastered by Ben Feggans (Cut Copy) of Studios 301, Early Trauma as a final product is refined, beautifully produced and delivered with the essence of the band going untouched. “Written in a dimly lit studio/bedroom in an old townhouse in Redfern on an unplugged Gretsch and a borrowed Microkorg in between work weeks and late nights. Lyrics and parts were bounced off one another on top of the mattress that lay upon the floor of the room. Forever trapped in a futile battle with cockroaches we finalized the songs in Sydenham and recorded them at A Sharp Studios with our producer Adrian Breakspear, who is always on the pursuit for perfection.” Johnny Hunter

PRAISE FOR JOHNNY HUNTER

“When routine bites hard and ambitions are low, Johnny Hunter come through with the lifted modern post-punk anthem to get you lifted out the malaise.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“What an absolute dream scenario.”
Double J, Zan Rowe

“Like something out of a John Hughes film, Johnny Hunter deliver another dark yet triumphant 80s synth jam.”
Triple J, Nick Findlay

“A listen to Johnny Hunter’s music will reveal punkish stories of heartbreak, overconfidence, and millennial masculinity.”
Pilerats

“Rocking what could best be described as a post-glam-rock aesthetic, Johnny Hunter are much more of an experience than they are a band.” I OH YOU
