GENGAHR ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN TOUR SUPPORTS, MERPIRE AND GREEN BUZZARD AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND TOUR KICKING OFF IN TWO WEEKS

by the partae February 26, 2020
written by the partae
  • Gengahr have announced the support artists for their Australian tour – Merpire will be joining the band in Melbourne, and Green Buzzard will support in Sydney
  • Gengahr’s Australian and New Zealand tour kicks off next month
  • Gengahr’s third full-length album Sanctuary is out now!
Having just wrapped up their sold-out UK tour, Gengahr are gearing up to kick off their Australian and New Zealand tour next month. With the tour just weeks away, Gengahr today have announced that special guests Green Buzzard will join them in Sydney, with Merpire sharing the stage in Melbourne.

Green Buzzard is the solo project of Sydney musician Paddy Harrowsmith. Across two EPs –  2016’s Eazy, Queezy, Squeezy and 2017’s Space Man Rodeo – and his debut 2019 record Admist the Clutter & Mess, Green Buzzard has melded hooky melodies, fuzzed-out guitars, soaring lead lines and propulsive, almost drum-machine like beats into a sound all his own.

From emotional rollercoasters to fully immersive, indie-rock arrangements, Merpire is the musical brainchild of Riannon Atkinson-Howatt. Conjuring magical moments in both the studio and on stage, Merpire and her predominantly female line-up have supported the likes of Julia Jacklin, Last Dinosaurs, Angie McMahon and Didirri, and entranced crowds at Bigsound, A Festival Called PANAMA and By The Meadow. Merpire will release the next single from her debut album, ‘Heavy Feeling’, this Friday (27 February).

Gengahr released their third full-length album Sanctuary last month. The album was hailed by music press, with triple j choosing it as their Feature Album, Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1 making it his Album For The Weekend, and BBC 6Music featuring it as their Album Of The Day. Amongst these many accolades, Danny Ward from Gengahr has been crowned as having the Sexiest/Smoothest Voice from Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1’s The Saunders Awards.

Sanctuary features the single ‘Heavenly Maybe’, which is on rotation at triple j, is A-listed at BBC 6 Music, playlisted at BBC Radio 1, and was Greg James’ Tune Of The Week on Radio 1’s Breakfast Show. DIY called the track “a pleasing slice of indie-pop”; and Clash “an ultra-infectious new synth jammer”. The single reached #28 in Spotify’s UK Viral Chart.

★★★★ “A monumental shift in the right direction – it’s a record that is boldly more expansive and electrifyingly curious” – Dork

8/10 “Gengahr release an album that is bold, daring and dazzling with sheer pop excellence. It packs in a full bag of human emotion eloquently and sophisticatedly” – The Line Of Best Fit

★★★★★ “An album you’ll die for… an extremely exciting, well-written, beautifully produced album that I doubt will be forgotten any time soon” – Indie Is Not A Genre

Hot from releasing their booming latest single, ‘Explode Into View,’ Perth outfit Sly Withers have released a brand-new video for the track featuring behind-the-scenes studio footage of them recording the mighty new song.

‘Explode Into View’ has been heralded for taking the high bar the Perth four-piece set for themselves in 2019 and shattering it with an emotional blast, thanks to the stadium-sized production of the new cut. The new video, made with regular collaborator Tim Elphick (director of their previous videos for ‘Sad Guy’ and ‘Good Days, Bad Days’), captures footage from the studio sessions for the recording of the new single, highlighting how the band continue to approach making records the same as they always have – a bunch of mates loving to make music together – despite their exponentially growing audience and reputation.

Sly Withers’ career momentum only seemed to gather speed throughout the last 12 months, following the release of their breakout EP, Gravis, and particularly its killer single ‘Lately’ feat. Carla Geneve, their first release on stalwart indie label Dew Process. Sold out national tours, festival appearances and supports slots with rock and pop power houses alike – from Slowly Slowly to Amy Shark and Tones & I – has seen them capitalise on their high profile with the announcement they’ll appear on the bill at Splendour In The Grass for the first time this July.

Despite all that success, nothing for Sly Withers has changed on an elemental level. The same four members – Jono Mata (guitar / vox), Sam Blitvich (guitar / vox), Joel Neubecker (drums) and Shea Moriarty (bass) – using the same producer as Gravis (Matthew Templeman at his studio in Mount Hawthorn), they now have pulsating self-belief that can only be built on the back of hard work and a brotherhood forged in the trenches. The result is a towering new sound that is much, much greater than the sum of its parts, yet reflects the depth of the emotional core of the band and the love they share for the music they make together.

Speaking about ‘Explode Into View,’ Mata says, “”When I wrote this song I was on the brink of an exciting new relationship which, by no fault of either party, never came to fruition. Some things just aren’t meant to be, and sometimes irrational thinking gets the better of us. The song is about moving on with the feeling that things will never be as good as we imagined, that we seek closure we’ll never get, and how weeks, months and years down the track, a chance run-in or out of the blue text can send us spiralling out of logical thinking and right back to where we started. ‘Explode Into View’ is about finding moments of clarity in times of confusion.”

Shows for their national Explode Into View tour continue to sell at a rapid pace, and tickets are on sale now on sale from www.slywithers.com – get yours before you miss out.

Dot Dash Recordings and Remote Control Records are pleased to announce a new EP from Western Australia's Methyl Ethel. Hurts To Laugh will be released Friday 10th April via Dot Dash / Remote Control. Overnight triple j's Good Nights premiered the EP's lead single 'Majestic AF'. Listen via methylethel.lnk.to/hurtstolaugh. To celebrate the new single and EP Methyl Ethel will be supporting Peter, Bjorn & John on their American tour dates throughout March and April. On return to Australia, Methyl Ethel will tour in solo mode at intimate venues in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Full tour dates and ticket links below. Hurts To Laugh marks the ongoing output of Methyl Ethel producer and multi-instrumentalist Jake Webb’s restless mind. Time and again he’s proven that while there’s no distinction between music and art, psychologically speaking there is a difference between feeling and emotion. One is a conscious response to a set of circumstances, the other is the unconscious conditions of our very being that only occasionally surfaces through feelings. Hurts To Laugh excavates this ambiguous site, implied by its very title. You can laugh so hard it hurts - pure joy. Or laugh despite the pain - despair. These paradoxes run throughout the EP, as well as everything that came before.  'Majestic AF' stumbles into its bubbling oscillator and analogue polyrhythms, while a kick-free drumbeat marches right into an atonal synth melody supporting Webb’s equally idiosyncratic falsetto. Hurts To Laugh was recorded at the same time as 2019's Triage and both releases feature cover art by Sydney-based artist Loribelle Spriovski. Triage was Webb's third and final album in a trilogy of obliquely expressed relationship drama, starting with 2015’s Oh Inhuman Spectacle which features certified ARIA Gold single 'Twilight Driving'. 2017's Everything Is Forgotten birthed the sensational single 'Ubu' which is now certified ARIA Platinum.  Methyl Ethel is a project that’s the brainchild of a single mind—writer, performer and producer Webb—while also being a live band of five members. It makes music that draws from myriad influences and a history of new wave and indie rock, while sounding like its own thing entirely. Both familiar and alien, intimate and aloof, you never quite know what you’re in for, but the trip is bound to be enchanting. Karnivool are thrilled to announce The Decade of Sound Awake tour where, exclusively for Australia, they will play the whole album in its entirety. Marking some of the band's biggest headline shows to date, the tour takes in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle.  Karnivool's Sound Awake captured a moment in time when circumstance, influence and individuals collided, restructured and, with a lot of time, pain and joy became elevated above the sum of the parts. A decade and platinum sales have passed the landmark moment in the career of this band who have always gone their own way - meandered when they could have rushed, explored a sonic roadmap forward, then sideways, then backwards. And then forward again. Sound Awake is an album heavily informed by the art and science of Cymatics and questioning of an ever changing world. From the structured rage of 'Set Fire to the Hive’, the monster riffing of 'Goliath’ and the single that was never a single 'New Day’, Sound Awake is a record full of fan favourites that Kenny, Drew, Hoss, Steve and Jon see as their benchmark.  Attaining worldwide success over this last decade, it launched Karnivool to an intensely loyal, passionate audience that lifted them from an opening act with some interesting tuning to international festival headline act with, well, more interesting tuning in more interesting places... Youngstown, Istanbul, Glasgow, Helsinki, Pune, Bratislava, Auckland, Cape Town, Moscow, Wiesbaden and some place they were told was Chicago, but clearly wasn’t. Now on the cusp of adulthood, life is destined to take them in different directions – Johnno’s family are moving him to a new town and a better life, leaving Spanner behind to face a precarious future. But this summer is going to be different for them, and for the country. The explosion of the free party scene and the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history is happening across the UK. In pursuit of adventure and escape, the boys head out on one last night together to an illegal rave. PRAISE FOR MAN ALIVE!

“Equal parts beautiful and haunting. It’s these nuances that encapsulate King Krule and make Man Alive! Marshall’s most compelling record to date.” – STACK

“Man Alive!, dials up the cynicism and expands the space around his musings so he can speak more directly about his bleak experiences while tempering them with loping but pretty melodies.” – The Music, ★★★★

“Marshall’s creativity is shining for all the world to see.” – NME, ★★★★

“His most anguished album yet” – Pitchfork, 7.7

King Krule today releases his new album Man Alive! out via XL Recordings / Remote Control Records. See him perform in Australia as a part of Splendour In The Grass this July.

With an animated video created by Jamie Wolfe, who previously collaborated with Archy on a short video for ‘Vidual’, Jamie has also created animations for Gucci and the TV show Rick & Morty.

Archy Ivan Marshall has the world at his feet. After two feverishly received albums as King Krule, plus another low-key outing under his own name, this extraordinarily gifted 25-year-old from Peckham in South London adds further depth and substance to his oeuvre with another wondrous long-player called Man Alive!. It arrives packed full of his trademark sonic ambition and compositional skill, as well as the now-familiar corrosive lyricism and lurid social observation. Marshall has emerged as a pack leader amongst his peers, leading the charge in a fearless blurring of genre divisions, one minute seeming to drag the listener through the trashiest punk experience, the next ushering in a soundworld that’s apparently hi-tech and forward-looking.

Like any great artist on the rise, Archy’s life is moving fast. There’s a lot to catch up on, after 2017’s sprawling masterpiece, The Ooz, broke through amid Mercury Prize nominations and minds-blown media plaudits. Unlike that record, Man Alive! doesn’t aim to present any kind of narrative thread, or Brexit-era state-of-the-nation address, just a collection of snapshots and stories, artfully sequenced into a dazzlingly coherent whole.

This third King Krule album was written as a direct reaction to the non-stop energy of touring The Ooz, and then partly recorded at Shrunken Heads in Marshall’s native stamping ground of Nunhead, with ‘Ooz’ co-producer Dilip Harris. Midway through those sessions, however, Archy found out he was going to become a dad for the first time, and he decided to move up to the North West to be near the mother’s family, ready for the baby’s arrival.

“I should’ve had it all wrapped up before my daughter was born,” says Marshall today with a sheepish grin. Impending parenthood came at a felicitous moment for him, as he was beginning to feel trapped in South London’s suburban lifestyle of all-eclipsing drunkenness and depression, which existing fans will know was a recurring theme in his earlier music.

“It was just the easiness of it,” he reflects today. “There really is nothing else to do here, especially when it turns to winter. Everyone I know has jobs, whereas I’d sit on my arse all day sometimes not doing anything, then I’d go to the pub with them when they finished work. It became a bit habitual. Then, right in the middle of the record, this big change came in my life that I didn’t really comprehend initially. It was like, ‘Oh, I’d better get my shit together!’ To be honest, I was really glad to get away from all that so I could focus on more pressing matters – like keeping a child alive and stuff.”

The new album’s title, he explains, “is an exclamation, about the times we live in. Like, ‘Fucking hell, man!’” He stole the title from a CD that his uncle gave him back in 2013 with some of his uncle’s own music on it, and originally planned to use it for his last album.

“More and more,” he explains, “I’ve been put off by the intention of speaking about what’s going on in society as a black-and-white thing, or trying to get to the bottom of why we’re in this position. So the album is mostly made up of snapshots and observations. There are a lot of real-time-and-place moments, songs talking about walking through the park just over there and getting a head injury [don’t ask! – Ed.], then there are other tracks which are just simplicity, looking at one particular situation and reflecting on it as somehow being super-profound.”

Just as the lyrics are diverse in theme and purpose, so is the music: ‘Comet Face’ lopes along with irresistible unease like a wonky New Wave hit, and ‘Stoned Again’ packs all the inspired beatmongery of ’90s hip hop, while much of the record’s sparser second half recalls the lo-fi intimacy of Robert Wyatt’s ’80s solo work, or indeed the recordings of mass-murderer Charles Manson.

As the concluding ‘Please Complete Thee’ sails out on upliftingly twangsome slide guitar, you’d be forgiven for imagining that some of the more agonizing preceding numbers have served as a kind of therapy for their creator. “Oh yeah,” he freely admits, “once you’re able to discuss things and talk honestly, there is no better way than just shouting it out at a bunch of people. I was always empowered by lyricism and getting my aggression out in some way, or any kind of emotion. That has always been a process for me. This time I felt like I had gotten out of a dark place, and I was on a high. I appreciated the depression, and the low times I’d been through, but I also liked how I felt better in the here and now. So it was about reaching that new plateau.”
