RAGEFLOWER unveils emotionally charged art-rock single ‘YEARS’

by the partae July 28, 2022

Sydney based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist RAGEFLOWER (aka Madeleine Powers) returns with a new sound, and bold new look after the successful debut of ‘Still Calling’ which scored airplay on triple j unearthed, FBi, 4ZZZ and a swag of community radio stations across Australia.

Delivered with confidence, ‘Years’ is a self-reflective track that chronicles the process one goes through emotionally after a nasty break up. Vocally RAGEFLOWER soars with vulnerability and authenticity much like her contemporaries Phoebe Bridgers and Avril Lavigne.

“The song was written after a really bad breakup, it initially started as a major diss track but as I was writing the second verse I was like “hmm… this is also me”.  It really transformed the song into a reflection on how often both parties contribute to the destruction of a relationship. It’s about taking ownership of your part in toxicity and true, honest accountability. “

RAGEFLOWER

Like her previous single ‘Still Calling’, RAGEFLOWER enlisted one of Australia’s most revered mastering engineers Steve Smart (Ocean Alley, Dean Lewis, Vance Joy) to work on ‘Years’ with mixing by Nicolas Mendoza (Lime Cordiale, Loretta). ‘Years’ was recorded at Studios 301, Casa Studios and Sunset Magnolia Studios. To create this gentle art-rock track, she

listened to lush and acoustic folk songs, then pivoted by experimenting with darker and moody soundscapes.

“This song started as a folk song, I was listening to a lot of Joni Mitchell at the time. I wrote the song in open D tuning on the guitar and it originally had this massive jangly folk riff in the intro. When Nico (Producer, Nicodemo Scali) and I started building the production we both decided it needed to go in a different direction, the opposite direction perhaps – and so we started listening to Massive Attack, Bjork and Smashing Pumpkins in the studio to find some sounds that resonated with what we were both feeling.

It was a very intuitive and exciting song to produce, we really loved experimenting with the industrial drum samples and synths with this one. I think this song is a big turning point for the sound of RAGEFLOWER, I want to flow into a more experimental art-rock space from the last single moving forward.”

RAGEFLOWER

With the release of ‘Years’, RAGEFLOWER is again proving she’s one of Australia’s most enthralling and brightest new artists.

PRAISE FOR RAGEFLOWER

“I had to hear this! It’s got a nice mix between soft emotion and seething angst.”

Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed

“I too was intrigued by the broad range of influences you listed, but it makes complete sense as soon as you hit play. Moments of folk-y tenderness in the chorus interspersed with 90s-ish pop punk touches.”

Abby Butler, triple j Unearthed

“The confessional verses and soaring choruses are brought to another level in the accompanying video that further highlights themes of disconnection and destructive coping mechanisms.”

AAA BACKSTAGE

“If you’re a fan of Phoebe Bridgers’s introspective songwriting and Avril Lavigne’s euphoric, guitar-driven pop-punk anthems then you’ll enjoy Still Calling.”

COOL ACCIDENTS

“The song is a indie-pop-rock delight which switches between quieter, reflective verses and a full-blooded, powerful chorus.”

Acclaimed producers & artists SHEPH.ART & BARRY SALEH combine for lush hip-hop track ‘ACTION’

SINGLE: STREAM HERE
VIDEO: WATCH HERE

Sheph.ART & Barry Saleh are no strangers to smooth melodies, crisp beats and immaculate vibes. The two producers have steadily made a name for themselves in Liverpool, Sydney producing a multitude of talented acts out of their studio, including A.Girl, Youngn Lipz, Pistol Pete, Billymaree, JKing & more. This work has been featured globally, landing coverage across Red Bull, triple j, AU Dollars Waevz AU to list a handful. Combining for ‘Action’, the two talented young hit-makers are bringing to audiences their debut offering as artists in their own right. Working out of the very same studio, the producers channel influences from J.Cole, Kanye, Brent Faiyaz & The Weeknd into a track that allows them to showcase their versatility and talent as producers, songwriters & now performers as well.

“Let ‘em see my actions speak, Imma let ‘em see my actions speak” sings Sheph.ART. ‘Actions’ takes adversity and let down, channeling it into a smooth & defiant track of self-actualisation. Not allowing naysayers to define them, Barry Saleh & Sheph.ART are articulate and poignant in their resistance to those who try to take advantage of them. The two powerhouses control their venom into a sultry and polished track that clears their minds and positions the pair as the cool & calm beat-slingers of Australian hip-hop; fresh to the stage, but ready to rise rapidly.

“Action’ is a reference to the people who have doubted my musical, creative and business abilities, always being nowhere to be found when crunch time was imminent and now would like a seat at the table to bear the fruits of my labor. I specifically made the production as gritty as possible without losing its melodic essence in order to take the listener through an emotional rollercoaster to feel the hunger that I felt going through the motions of being able to get to where I am today and looking to go forward from here.” Sheph.ART

“Although the beat and the main vocals can sound upfront and in your face, the listener has the option to listen a little more in depth and find that there is a flow of movement in the record. The inspiration of the lyrics came from being turned down by someone who showcased believing in my vision and abilities. This made me realize that there are so many artists just like myself who go through the pain of rejection and I would like to be the voice on their behalf to showcase that their hustle for their growth does not go unnoticed.”  Sheph.ART

Single Art – Jadedamico

Incorporating physical symbols, representing the themes of their individual verses, Sheph.ART & Barry Saleh both wanted to be direct and forthright in the visual accompaniment for ‘Action’. Shot in a sparse backyard, similar to those seen across Western Sydney, the two rappers are able to revel in the growth they’ve needed to show, to land them in the position they are today. ‘Action’ closes with the two gazing into the inferno, reflecting on their past & planning for their future – driven to succeed.

“As a debut, we wanted the music video to represent our themes of the record in a way that was able to be relatable to our audience. In Australia, we are surrounded by bushland, campfires and BBQ and we wanted to incorporate this theme in the video.” Sheph.ART

The video starts off with Barry Saleh walking into an open bushland with a trophy in his hand, leaving the audience confused and wanting to learn what happens next. This trophy is ultimately thrown into a campfire that sparks the light in us both to keep moving forward without feeling the need to please and accommodate society. The symbolic nature of the friends shown in the video reference how people can be present in one’s life and don’t necessarily need to have a negative impact on the outcome of your dreams. Sheph.ART

With a string of production & song-writing credits under their belts, as well as a community that already recognises their name, Sheph.ART & Barry Saleh are poised to now nudge their faces & voices to the front of Australian hip-hop culture. ‘Action’ sets the tone for a slew of upcoming releases that are masterfully executed in flow, melody & production. The two powerhouses are not a flash in the pan, with an energy and purpose driving their future collaborations.

PRAISE FOR SHEPH.ART & BARRY SALEH

“It’s also not surprising that Sheph is on the up. As well as having the talent it takes, he’s working in a boom time for Australian producers”
Red Bull Music

“Past credits include production for the likes of A.Girl, Youngn Lipz, and Pistol Pete, and more than ten million streams for their combined outputs. ‘Action’ continues Sheph.ART and Barry Saleh’s preference for pairing smooth melodies with crisp beats, allowing the intricacies of the track to unfold throughout its two-and-a-half minute runtime.”
Music Feeds

“Working out of the same studio, the Western Sydney artists know the formula it takes to make a hit song. Inspired by the likes of Kanye West and The Weeknd, ‘Action’ showcases their distinct melodies, polished production and powerful lyricism of self-actualisation.”
AU Dollars

“Coulda sworn that lead vocal came from Abel! Lush package and the energy us way up”

Archangel Records, Australia’s newest independent record label dedicated to female talent launches today

by the partae July 27, 2022
written by the partae

The newest sub-label of the Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group
aims to support independent women and their music.

Archangel’s roster includes Texan alt-rock outfit Tough On Fridays, Meanjin’s Ella Fence and Indonesian boundary-pushers SCALLER

Archangel Records Co-Founders Jasmine Robins and Kay McRae.

At a time when the global music scene needs more than ever a place in which creativity and inclusivity for the game-changing artists around us is put into focus, it is this environment in which Archangel Records, the latest sub-label of Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group, comes into view, making its official launch today.

The brainchild of Australian music-lovers Jasmine Robins and Kay McRae – two young, female employees of Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group who aim to change the way that local music operates – Archangel Records makes its official debut with an already-stacked roster of impressive talent, and a mission statement that is as admirable as it is powerful.

Taking inspiration from the eponymous archangel – that is, an “angel of the highest stature”, and beings which are “fierce, powerful, and relentless” – Robins and McRae look toward these qualities as the prominent focus for their label, leaning into the fierce, powerful, and relentless artists around us who strive to change the world with their fearless art.

Since their respective origins as members of the Golden Robot team, both Robins and McRae have experienced first-hand what it’s like to be part of a label that helps to ensure that the focus is put squarely upon the artist, and exists to create an environment which encourages and fosters creativity.

Now, with their combined experience, the pair’s newest venture strives to provide elegant, modern, and proud representation for women on the already impressive Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group roster, all while serving as a metaphorical middle-finger for those who overlooked the duo or stood in their way.

Built around a shared desire to support independent women and their music, Archangel Records is set to serve as the change that is sorely needed within the Australian music scene.

At its core, Archangel Records exists to help elevate the female presence in a heavily male-dominated industry, and endeavours to erase the stereotypes that surround women in music. Armed with a roster full of contemporary and imaginative artists, the label strives to create a space with a wide and inclusive range of genres and people.

With its official launch into the local and international music scene taking place today Wednesday, 27 July, Archangel Records is welcomed into the world with an already-admirable roster of artists. These artists include the likes of Meeanjin/Brisbane based singer-songwriter Ella Fence, and Indonesian boundary-pushers SCALLER.

Ella Fence is set to announce the release of a new album through Archangel Records soon, while SCALLER will put their new single, ‘Music We All Have‘, up for pre-order on Thursday, 28 July, with new album Noises & Clarity set to arrive in late September.

Notably, the Archangel Records roster also includes Texan alt-rock outfit Tough On Fridays, who are set to release their forthcoming album, The Encore You Didn’t Ask For, through the label. Their first full-length release since the arrival of 2020’s A Fantastic Way To Kill Some Time, the upcoming record is set to release in November, with the first single ‘Growing Pains’ available for pre-order through the Archangel Records website which also launched today.

With a roster of fierce talent already up their sleeves, and a strong desire to continuously expand, Archangel Records is set to continue their shake-up of the musical landscape by ensuring the way that they sign artists aligns with their integrous vision.

Focusing strongly on female artists and female-led bands, Archangel Records aims to assert themselves as an approachable label which is open to hearing from new, upcoming, and established acts as opposed to actively ‘hunting’ new talent in accordance with the archaic industry methodology.

Jasmine Robins and Kay McRae photographed by Rin Evans.

Archangel Records Co-Founder, Kay McRae, states:

“Nothing feels better than being in your element. Listening to music, creating connections and new experiences… It’s amazing. As time has gone on I’ve noticed that something is lacking in this industry, and that’s women. I want to change that.”

Armed with a fresh and exciting approach to the music industry, Archangel Records are committed to ensuring that their roster is as diverse as it is powerful, with a strong focus on breaking down the barriers that stand in the way of any artist, and a dedication towards the same fiercely independent nature that underlines the Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group.

Archangel Records Co-Founder, Jasmine Robins, adds:

“The music industry is fast paced and fierce, but rewarding to work in. Seeing releases go out and watching them do well, knowing that you’ve had a hand working on them, is an incredible feeling. The connections you make with artists, managers and people in the music world are connections that will last a lifetime and another reason why I love this industry so much.”

Archangel Records joins the likes of Social Family Records, Riot Records, Crusader Records, Counter Clockwise Records, and others already within the Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group, and aims to continue their expansion with more groundbreaking talent in the coming months and years.

CEO & Founder of Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group, Mark Alexander-Erber, adds:

“I am over the moon to not only have two hard working and loyal staff members as part of our global team but they have shown an entrepreneurial attitude and flair at such a young age. I would be crazy not to back their initiative and leadership in the undertaking of this new label. They have my full support and the backing of the Golden Robot International machine in every way.”

Archangel Records makes its official launch on Wednesday 27 July as part of the Golden Robot Global Entertainment Group.

Tough On Fridays’ new album, The Encore You Didn’t Ask For, arrives in November via Archangel Records, with the first single ‘Growing Pains’ available for pre-orders now. Pre-save here.

The Mess Around

by the partae July 27, 2022
written by the partae

 Where are you currently based?

The band is currently located in the most isolated (and beautiful!) city in the world, Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia.

How did The Mess Around form?

The Mess Around were formed in the depths of the pandemic by founding members, Alex Ford (Drums), Chris Dyson (Guitar) and Joel Bradbury (Vocals). The three founded the group based on their love of Surf Rock, Australian Indie and 1990s Grunge Rock. After some lineup changes Cian Moore (Bass) and Luca Bonini (Guitar) joined to round out the group in late 2021 providing not only chaotic youthful energy, but also rhythmic drive and harmonic thickness.

What’s been happening recently?

Recently the boys have departed on their WA “Kings of the South” tour on the back of their latest single release “Still Broke” hitting towns such as Mandurah, Margaret River and Esperance just to name a few. Being their first time playing shows outside the Perth Metro area, they are stoked to be bringing their unique brand of surf rock to WA music lovers across the state’s picturesque south west. On top of this the boys have been spending their time whilst at home in Perth to continue to record and write the music that fans have come to know and love.

Your latest single ‘Still Broke’ is out now, what influenced the sound and song writing?

“Still Broke” tells the story of a wild time out and about on a long hot Aussie summer night. Influenced by the hectic nature of the Aussie summer and arvo BBQs that turn into sunset beach sessions, that then turn into nights out on the town and watching the sunrise from the roof of your mates 4×4. The group attempted to capture the instant nostalgia of a great time had around great people. Verses spill into choruses that then open out into a signature Mess Around bridge section before then diving back into a final outro to tie it all together. It is this dynamic flowing nature that allows the listener to feel lost inside a good time, just as you so often are when trying to wrangle the larrikins we call friends on a night out.

How did you go about writing Still Broke?

As with a lot of the band’s music “Still Broke” started from riff powerhouse, guitarist Chris Dyson. Often he’ll come into rehearsal sessions with a smattering of riffs that the boys can choose to jam on, and the boppy chord progression that sits under the song’s melodic lines was what happened to be on offer. From there singer Joel found his way through the song’s catchy melody lines (paired with crass demo lyrics about farts and balls) whilst drummer Alex and bassist Cian locked into a groove tighter than an atomic bond. All that was left was for Luca to lay down his signature lead lines and backing vocals and the song began to really rock. The group chose to have the lyrics performed in a “call and response” style in the chorus to signify the mateship that the song attempts to portray, whilst verses remain sparse although dripping with reverb allowing the listener to soak in the lush harmonics of the tune.

Where and when did you record, produce and master?

As with a lot of The Mess Around’s music, what you’ll find recorded on Spotify will stay faithful to what is played live, so in terms of production the band aims to be able to perfect the structure and arrangement of songs in their rehearsals to deliver audiences thoughtfully crafted music – that can then be listened to on repeat wherever they stream their music.

As for recording, our incredibly talented drummer Alex handled the engineering and tracking as each member played their part and was able to beautifully capture the sonic landscape of the song and its beachy intentions.

Once happy with the tracking we then sent it through to good friend of the band, and sound wizard, Jay Huxtable over at Oracle Sound. he mixed and mastered the hell out of it, providing the finishing touches that gave this song its raw surf rock goodness.
Who are you listening to at the moment?

Some local bands we are enjoying include Surf Shop Cops, Reef Eater, Moth Street Artists, Drowse, Solar Juice, All Day Breakfast Club and Sunny Flowers.

Some national/international acts we love are Spacey Jane, Tyler the Creator, Jane’s Addiction, John Mayer, Powder Finger, R.E.M, King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizard and Ocean Alley.

What do you like to do away from music?

The band have a very diverse set of interests outside of music. Joel and Luca are avid sports fans and are often found playing tennis, basketball or kicking the footy. Alex, Chris and Cian prefer the comfort of home and enjoy playing classic video games and building computers. Of course all the boys enjoy hitting up local venues and watching the best live music WA has to offer!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

2022 began for the band as a period of writing some of the great tunes such as “Still Broke” and “Balance” that have since been released out into the world for all to enjoy. Since then the boys began a period of heavy gigging which ramps up with their “Kings of the South Tour” from August to October of 2022. After that you can expect to see them writing and recording down at Oracle Studios once again working hard at what they love to do. 2023 will hold much more time spent in the studio for the group and who knows, maybe even a trip across the desert to visit their neighbors to the East ;).

Favourite food and place to hangout?

As a group the boys will always go out for Burgers and Mexican, and then head to the closest dive bar to soak in the sights and sounds that the local scene has to offer.

TIED DOWN release energetic punk-rock infused single ‘UNDEFEATED’

by the partae July 26, 2022
written by the partae

PLAY/LISTEN

Perth indie punk-rockers Tied Down return with a punchy and soaring new single ‘Undefeated’. Featuring explosive drumming, powerful vocals and high tempo punk-riffs, the result is a masterful combination of all that Tied Down has become known for.

Building from the consistent sound delivered with previous releases, ‘Undefeated’ marks a powerful back up to their last single ‘Slow’ which similarly showcased their skillset and roots in the punk/rock genre. With this current release, Tied Down has proven themselves as being able to produce a nuanced and tastefully curated exploration of passionate, yet refined, high-energy music.

“Undefeated is a track armed to the teeth with fast paced riffs, explosive drumming, a driving bassline and a powerful vocal arrangement which we’ve become known for. Fighting against the challenges of daily life and an unwillingness to give up despite what’s thrown at you is what this track is all about. We want this track to uplift and empower anyone dealing with issues they feel are out of their control and have a feeling it will do exactly that!” Tied Down.

Crackling with energy, ‘Undefeated’ Is a cathartic exploration of resilience. The delicate balance between vulnerability and boldness will have you reminiscing on the tenderness of existence. A punchy 90s pop-punk instrumentation underpins this fiery single while delicately woven strands of instrumentation

In a similar vein to contemporaries The Dead Love, Slowly Slowly, Dear Seattle, and Waxflower. Tied Down prove themselves as being able to deliver exceptional music with refined production. Recorded live at Hopping Mouse Studios the track was then recorded and produced by Matt Templeman (Sly Withers, Voyager) and mastered by Simon Struthers (Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Karnivool, Something For Kate)  at Forensic Audio Mastering.

Speaking of the process of making the music, Tied Down share unique insight into the collaborative efforts. “Undefeated started with a riff written by Kado (Rhythm Guitar) which saw Deano spring into action pretty easily on the drums. Once we marked out the progression and arrangement of the track, the rest of us latched on nicely. We already had the concept of writing a more up-tempo, uplifting track heading into this one so once Dolsy (Bass) and Steve (Lead Guitar) got their hands on it, it really started to take shape. I think CJ (Vocals) sat on it for a couple of days and sent all the lyrics through in the chat which hit home for all of us. All in all, we’re super proud of how Undefeated came about and the message it conveys.” Tied Down.

Tied Down are no stranger to the stage. Having supported Hands Like Houses on the WA leg of their national tour, they have further supported local legends South Summit and DICE to sold out crowds at Mojos and Milk Bar respectively.

The release of ‘Undefeated’ will be accompanied by a launch show in the main room of The Rosemount Hotel on July 16th. Supported by Angie Colman and Reins, Tied Down say of the launch “The Rosie has become a bit of a home for us over the years and we’ve got a really special setlist lined up to mark the occasion” Tied Down.

PRAISE FOR TIED DOWN

“The explosive and energetic Tied Down have melded a quixotic blend of punk, rap and indie-rock into their own unique sound”

The AU Review

“Bruised, delicate alternative rock that smoulders throughout with instrumentation that showcase a band who know how to harness their skills”

Scenestr

“explosive and energetic sound infusing punk, rock, rap and indie roots.”

WAM FEST

“Australia has long been a fertile breeding ground for great rock acts. [Tied Down] might be the latest group worthy of that title.”

FOVOS Releases New 90s-Inspired Modern Techno Banger In The Form Of “Pure” Single

by the partae July 22, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: FOVOS
Title: Pure
Label: Self release

Download / Stream

New Zealanders FOVOS have made hard-hitting techno and house tracks their namesake, and their newest release “Pure” certainly doesn’t disappoint. Upon first listen, it’s clear that the title is meant to represent pure underground sound, with driving and minimal bass lines that are meant for dark clubs and certainly aren’t for the faint of heart. As heard in their recent singles “Platia” and “Under Pressure,” FOVOS draws on inspiration from the old school raves of the 90s, bringing a dose of nostalgia with a modern twist. Whether you’re looking for your next festival anthem or after-hours banger, look no further than “Pure.”

“We’re so keen to get this dirty underground track out there. Pure takes heavy inspiration from old-school 90s raves and tries to bring that vibe into a modern techno banger. The track features a 90s-inspired vocal sample, tearing synths, and grooving bassline that’s sure to get any dancefloor moving.” – FOVOS

FOVOS began their artist adventure back in 2020 and throughout the midst of a global pandemic, have been hard at work producing music that speaks to the heart of the underground. Even early in their career, they’ve already been supported by Alok, AC Slater, Cloverdale, Dr. Fresch, Eli & Fur, Joel Corry, Kryder, Martin Ikin, and MASTERIA, to name a few. The duo has already been off to a strong start in 2022, while “Platia” continues their momentum. FOVOS have more music lined up for 2022 on the likes of Lee Foss’ Repopulate Mars, Insomniac, Barong Family, and more. Stay tuned for many more dancefloor-worthy tracks from these two.

Evergreener Release Their Restless New Single, ‘Deciduous’ Out July 22

 Stream ‘Deciduous’
Watch ‘Deciduous’ Music Video

Melbourne/ Naarm punk/grunge/post-hardcore rockers Evergreener are firing on all cylinders with their new track ‘Deciduous’, which drops on July 22 alongside the accompanying music video.

The band first formed in early 2015 under the name Stand Tall, but following a Covid-induced hiatus and a member disbanding, they’ve reunited under the new name Evergreener, suitably chosen to reflect a spiritual reboot and to showcase a newer, more mature sound.

As Stand Tall, the boys were no strangers to the local scene and shared the stage with the likes of Reside, Drastic Park, Parkwood, Excuse For An Exit, Vermont, Future Static, Bukowski, Snark, and Loose End.

Here, we see them raring and ready to launch their new season with the track ‘Deciduous’.

The agitated, restless rhythm generated from the kit instantly whets the appetite, further enhanced by a two-chord soundscape from both guitars, all coming together to unleash the song’s angsty energy which rocks its way into the bloodstream. The result is grunge-inspired, yet doesn’t shy away from upbeat 90s punk-rock. The lyrics are catchy, and Matt and Corey’s refrain ‘release me’ is cathartically textured by fast-paced riffs and a snarl that proves Evergreener mean business.

The song was written about a time of inner turmoil and feeling stuck in a negative mindset, but eventually moves through that frustration to acceptance. The band says that, for them, it represents:

“A light-hearted and positive outlook on a dark time, similar to that of deciduous leaves falling from a tree, only to grow back again more vibrant than before.”

The new chapter begins with Deciduous out in the world on Friday, July 22.

Surrender To The Charm Of Sam Syrah With His New Single, ‘Philosophy’ Out July 22

by the partae July 22, 2022
written by the partae
 Stream ‘Philosophy’

Sam Syrah (pronounced ‘Sah-rah’) is the vision of Brisbane/ Meanjin indie-rock/ alternative artist, Sam Shepherd, and he’s making a strong entrance to the scene with plenty of indie-rock swagger on new track ‘Philosophy’, out on July 22.

Previously a member of Daisy & The White Jacket, Port Royal and occasionally playing live with McDermott & North, Shepherd is confidently taking flight with Sam Syrah. Whilst a solo project, it is also a celebration of friendship, with Shepherd’s closest friends from bands including Juno and Port Royal taking up their instruments. This is the evolution of a musician who is hitting his stride with an exploration of a more personal approach to storytelling, and a sound that won’t back down.

Forming part of the upcoming EP ‘Some Things Stay The Same’ (due out later this year), in this track Shepherd invites us to walk the moonlit streets and embrace the allure of a night out with this slow-burner rock tune.

From the get-go, ‘Philosophy’ whisks you up in its unapologetically sensual sound, showing off some blistering guitar work and lyrics that dance between pining and complete surrender – but it’s Shepherd’s arresting voice that takes centre stage. The line, ‘Such a thing is hard to find’ leads into an effortlessly tantalising guitar solo that reaches fever pitch, and the surprise of a second encore for the song’s epic finale is everything the story deserves.

A tale of seduction, underpinned by the sweet sentiment of looking back on the past with fondness, Shepherd explains:

“This song is a nod to a past relationship. Acknowledging that yes, a lot went on, however, then was then and now is of course now – no hard feelings, only love and appreciation remains.”

This is just the beginning for Sam Syrah, but Shepherd is no stranger to the stage, having played Bluesfest, Rabbits Eat Lettuce and a sold-out shows at The Zoo and Lefty’s Music Hall in Brisbane/Meanjin with Port Royal.

Let yourself get swept up in the charm of ‘Philosophy’ when it’s released on Friday, July 22.

Yves V and Bhaskar Join Forces For Dynamic Vocal House Track “Round My Head.” Out Now on CONTROVERSIA

by the partae July 22, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Yves V & Bhaskar
Title: Round My Head
Label: CONTROVERSIA

Download / Stream

Tomorrowland resident Yves V makes his triumphant return to Alok‘s label CONTROVERSIA with his new track “Round My Head,” for which he teamed up with the label’s regular and their very own artist Bhaskar. The release is a dance-pop crossover suitable for both festival dance floors and radio airwaves, with dreamy and rhythmic male vocals. With the groovy melodies and driving tech house bassline, “Round My Head” fuses genres perfectly to make for an approachable and catchy gem. Yves V has recently released “She Movin’” with 22Bullets on Spinnin’ Records last month, and on the flip side we saw Bhaskar‘s stream of successful originals on Alok‘s label, such as “I Feel You,” “Higher,” or “See You There.”

Yves V has gained global recognition for his dynamic big room style with releases like “King Cobra” with Don Diablo, “Octagon,” “Direct Dizko” with Sander Van Doorn, “Madagascar” with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and “We Got That Cool” with Afrojack & Icona Pop. He has also remixed the likes of Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, and more. In 2022, the producer is amassing almost 4.5M monthly listeners on Spotify alone and has been supported by heavyweights such as David Guetta, Afrojack, Martin Garrix, Armin van Buuren and more. His electrifying live performances have wowed crowds at some of the world’s best festivals, including Tomorrowland, Sensation, Amsterdam Dance Event, David Guetta in Concert and Mysteryland.

Bhaskar began his history in 2004, still at age 12, when his first project with his twin brother Alok started. It all began as a hobby, but in a short time, they were already splitting their time between the studies and the studio. Son of renowned DJs Swarup and Ekanta, Bhaskar was inspired by his parents’ success and soon started to tour the world playing his music. Throughout his career, the Brazilian has collected a few hits to his name, including “Fuego” (145M+ Spotify streams) and “Infinity” (105M+ Spotify streams). His talents have led him to collaborate with and remix artists, including Tomorrowland resident Yves V, Moguai, Dubdogz, Wankelmut, Lucas Estrada, the Brazilian pop star Anitta and his brother Alok. Bhaskar has some more surprises up his sleeve, and we can’t wait to see what’s next!

Glass Animals + Sycco @ John Cain Arena, Melbourne, 19 July 2022

by the partae July 21, 2022
written by the partae

Photography + Words: Darren Chan

In another chilly winter evening in Melbourne, UK psychedelic indie-pop group, Glass Animals brought the summer vibes into John Cain Arena.

With a pineapple placed next to the drum kit looking like an orange, the band strolled onstage to an ecstastic crowd. Under neon signs and colourful stage lighting, they took everyone into their tropical oasis, performing tracks from their Dreamland album including Dreamland, Tangerine, Hot Sugar, and their hits Heat Waves and Gooey.

Lead singer Dave Bayley danced around the stage enjoying every moment, and the audience followed suit dancing the night away. This is as close to summer as we’ll get in the middle of winter!

Grizzlyshark

by the partae July 19, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Brisbane, Australia!

How did Grizzlyshark first start?

Liam: Three of us (Liam, Andrew and Adam) were in a band together previously, which shall remain nameless for the sake of our dignity, and we’d had Joey fill in on bass for us once before. When that band broke up we decided to keep playing music together and asked Joey to join us.
Andrew: I needed an excuse to hang out with Liam. A band seemed like the right move.

What’s been happening recently?

Liam: We most recently played a show with Glass Tides, Shangrila and Citadel at The Zoo in Brisbane which was awesome.

Your latest single ‘There’s No I In Quaranteam’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Liam: The song draws heavily from the 2008-2012 post-hardcore/emo scene, which we all grew up listening to and influenced our musical taste for years.
Andrew: I’ve been playing with the theme of this song for a fair few years. The start of it happened at a friends 18th. He had his “once a year phone call” from his father and not once was he wished a happy birthday. The train ride home broke my heart hearing how my friend had been treated by his father.

How did you go about writing There’s No I In Quaranteam?

Liam wrote the music while doing a side project that never panned out which played a similar style of music. The music itself was written first with more a Grizzlyshark spin on it than straight post-hardcore. Andrew and Joey then wrote all the lyrics and vocal melodies, though these were changing right up until we recorded the final version.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Back in July last year! Hard to believe it’s been that long. We recorded with Troy Brady (The Amity Affliction) who we’ve worked with for all of our releases to date. Having worked with him on 4 occasions he understands how we function (and sometimes don’t) as a unit, and it always feels like he knows how to get the best out of us.

How did you approach the recording process?

Doing a whole EP this time was pretty different compared to other times we’ve recorded. We came with 6 songs in various states of completion, one of which we’d done extensive pre-production with Alan Day from Four Year Strong (TMS). One of the songs got scrapped, and the 5th song got changed drastically in the recording process, and was built from some music Liam had written and lyrics and melodies that Andrew came up with during the recording process. Very different for us, as our writing process usually takes a while and we like to record quickly!

Your upcoming EP ‘MOSAIC’ is out on July 29, what can we expect?

Not consistency, that’s for sure! Our 3 released singles will be on there (TMS, What’s The Plan Gogglehead? and There’s No “I” In Quaranteam) along with 2 as yet unheard songs. It’s safe to say that none of the songs necessarily fit into exactly the same genre, which is pretty typical of Grizzlyshark at this stage. One in particular is very different to anything we’ve released at this point.

How did MOSAIC come about and what does this EP mean to you?

Honestly like most bands at the moment it came from the pandemic. When we released our last set of singles (Vicarious and Remember The Black Box) back in 2020 we were geared up to record an EP at the time with those songs and then right after we returned from the Vicarious launch tour that we played in QLD and NSW the pandemic hit. That took a lot of enthusiasm away from the music, until we started writing more, and eventually after discarding many demos we weren’t happy with, we had a set of songs we were really proud of. The name MOSAIC comes from the fact that this is a collections of from different genres written it different times, but all coming together to make Grizzlyshark what it is.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Windwaker, Ocean Grove, ERRA, Sleep Token, Letlive.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We’ll be joining We Set Signals for the Brisbane and Gold Coast legs of their upcoming tour in August, and will have an EP release show at an as yet unannounced time. After that, who knows? We might direct a movie or start selling bootleg goods, honestly we have no idea!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Death and Taxes is the “classiest” place you will find us. Otherwise Netherworld or someone’s place for boardgames is a common hangout for the band.

GUTS TOURING ANNOUNCES 2022 DATES AND LINE UP 19 bands, 7000 kilometres, 4 states, 36 shows, 20 workshops, and a bus named Tracy.

by the partae July 19, 2022
written by the partae
Guts Touring will return in 2022, bringing music to some of Australia’s most remote and isolated communities, giving them their first taste of live music in years.

Kicking off in the Northern Territory in August and continuing right down the ‘guts’ of Australia, the tour will move through South Australia in September and Victoria in October, before finishing off in Tasmania in November. Along for the ride is an awesome selection of Australian artists, including Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Birdz, Emma Donovan & The Putbacks, Children Collide, Horrorshow and Bad//Dreems.

Guts Touring is all about beaut music, beaut places and beaut people. Started in 2016 by Jack ‘Parso’ Parsons and James ‘Roadtrain’ Clarke (with help from tour mascot, Hugo ‘Dingo’ Dean), Guts kicked things off with the jam-packed ‘Up The Guts’ tour, a regional and remote live music and workshop series taking the best in Aussie music on tour. Drawing inspiration from the Warumpi Band and Midnight Oil’s iconic 1986 ‘Black Fella/White Fella’ tour through Central Australia, Guts wanted to bring the plug-in-and-play ethos of the world renowned Aussie pub rock scene back to life. Parso & the crew packed up and hit the road, moving from Hobart to Darwin; getting in amongst the bloody awesome communities of Burnie, Bendigo, Whyalla, Coober Pedy and Tennant Creek.

More than a series of ripper gigs; Guts is dedicated to representing a truly Australian music industry – diverse in culture, gender, location and background. The tour creates opportunities for regional and remote communities to experience and engage with live music, which means more than ever after 2 years of limited opportunities due to the pandemic. Alongside the live shows comes a series of workshops, focussed on bringing students in regional and remote communities, and artists, together to co-create music and discuss the industry’s career pathways.

In 2021, Guts Touring got back on the bus, touring the sell-out ‘Small Town Big Town’ tour. Legends like Amyl and the Sniffers, Bad//Dreems and Birds took to the stage across regional Victoria, showcasing the magic of good ol’ Australian live music. This year, Guts are back with another string of ripper gigs and workshops – bringing the uniting power of music straight up the guts of Australia once again.

Tickets are on sale now.

Respected producer Phairo steps into solo limelight with upcoming EP ‘9’

by the partae July 19, 2022
written by the partae

‘Drum Workout!’ is out now, watch Visualiser HERE / Save & Stream it HERE

Full EP out in Summer on LG105

The enigmatic Phairo newly emerges as a dance music artist after years in high demand producing acclaimed names in other genres such as Bruno Major, ELIZA and Sam Wills. His new project ‘9’ will drop monthly as singles. ‘Galacticon’ and ‘Drum Workout!’ are out now, with ‘Dwemer Sphere’ coming August 12th before the full almost-album drops Sept 9th.

Fired up by working on the likes of Bruno’s first two albums, including hits like ‘Easily’ (with 295 million streams on Spotify alone), Phairo found lockdown unlocked his first love. ‘Club and dance music first got me into producing at about 16, so it felt amazing to re-enter that realm and find a new love and excitement for making beats! I wanted to make music on my own, with the main focus on musical and production ideas.’

‘Galacticon’, his first ‘9’single, delivers those beats in spades, a drum- and bass-heavy track with a jazzed up industrial vibe overlaid with mysterious distorted melody. Genre-bending, yes, but eminently danceable.

‘Drum Workout!’ is in Phairo’s own words ‘a clubby thumper with a bonkers beat’. Cool, jazzy, exuberantly intricate percussion takes centre stage, the bones of dance laid bare, contrasted with a breakdown and climax of juddering string chords. If you’re not dancing to it, you’re drumming along to it on any available surface.

‘At 9 tracks it’s longer than an EP, but shorter than an album, more like a mixtape – a broad indicator of my influences and musical loves, and a good sign of what’s to come and where I’m headed musically.’ The artwork for the full project, from artist Osian Jenaer, is heavily inspired by Phairo’s intrigue with the number 9 and his love for sci-fi, nature and otherworldly scenes.

 Stream ‘Modern Indie Spacecats’

With their loudest and most rollicking release so far, Melbourne/Naarm based band The Great Emu War Casualties have shot straight for the moon with indie-rock rager, ‘Modern Indie Spacecats’, set to disrupt the airwaves from July 15.

If the band’s name wasn’t enough of a hook, the Australian indie-rock / alt-pop / art-rockers will certainly cause a stir with their sound. The Great Emu War Casualties have been busy as usual, and this is their third single release for the year following ‘Dow Jones’ and ‘Where4@thou Romeo’.

‘Modern Indie Spacecats’ is an aptly titled song that gallops forward and propels you headfirst into its rocking rhythm with some impressively stomp-worthy drumming – it’s an indie-galactic journey, and it truly leaves no earth-dweller behind.

Channelling the boisterous energy and restless alt-rock angst of early Foals albums, this is a track full of ambition and drama. Fans of Bombay Bicycle Club, Everything Everything and Gengahr will also feel at home here. The sheer magnitude of the chorus is just begging to be cranked up to full volume, or better yet – witnessed live. Featuring some sizzling lead guitar, beckoning basslines and attention-grabbing chants, this is a truly stellar piece from the band.

Fuelled by a fiery frustration with the disillusionment of a capitalist society and the struggle to find silver linings, head emu / frontman Joe Jackson explains:

“The world is drying up and everyone is working all the time and nobody actually owns anything anymore, and we, the good little boys and girls, receive this rebrand from ownership to leasing as some sort of utopian global destination.”

Even the dream of space travel has been seized by the ultra-rich, Jackson continues, “We should have seen this coming from the very first day it was possible to “buy a star” and put your own stupid name on it. So where is our place in all of this? Maybe we are all the Modern Indie Spacecats.”

Previous releases from The Great Emu War Casualties have seen support from Triple J, Tone Deaf, Life Without Andy, theMusic, AAA Backstage, Forte Mag, Scenestr, The Soundcheck Review, Australian Musician, 3RRR, Radio Adelaide, 4ZZZ and more.

Get ready to experience this indie-rock rager when it’s set to jet into the stratosphere on Friday, July 15.
