GLVES

by the partae March 4, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

I live in Meanjin (Bris), on Turrbal country.

How did you first start playing music?

My interest in music and singing started in primary school with performing in choirs and drama and forming little singing groups to perform in front of the school. Singing and music have always felt natural to me.

What’s been happening recently?

Well, we’ve had an insane amount of rain over the weekend, the most rain in Brisbane’s recorded history. My husband and I had to work to defend our house from flooding because of the torrent of runoff coming from other houses around us, and also the creek below our house turned into a big brown sea that engulfed roads, bridges, community gardens and dog parks. Yeah, it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before and I lost my last house in the 2011 floods.

Your latest single ‘Change’ will be out on March 4, 2022, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Oof. This is such a big emotional song for me, it still gives me the feels. I wrote the lyrics and melody about the breakdown of a relationship. It’s about realising you need to let go of it, even though it’s so heavy and hard to do because you so desperately want it to work out. The sound reflects all of those emotions, it’s heavy, but also cinematic and floaty. I love paradox as I feel it reflects the human condition. Arrowbird co-wrote this with me, she composed the music, did backing vocals and produced the sound, I have a huge amount of respect for her as an artist and producer, we totally vibe on each other’s penchant for melancholic beats.

How did Change come about?

I wrote the demo for a task in I Heart Songwriting Club, then I shared it with Arrowbird via Instagram and asked her if she would be keen to collab with me on it, and she said yes, the rest is history.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I recorded my lead and backing vocals in studio with Daniel Newstead then sent them to Arrowbird who then composed and produced the music and added more backing vocals. Daniel Newstead then mastered for us.

Please tell us about your collaboration with Arrowbird:

We like to say that our music was like magnets that drew us together, she hit me up after hearing my debut single Abyss on Triple J Unearthed, and then I heard her music and I was like WOW. She makes incredible cinematic electronic music that’s totally my vibe, from that point on we started exchanging songs and sounds and artists we loved. We have actually never met in person, but we face chat all the time and have become close and formed a little network! She created a remix of my last single Legacy which I LOVED and we created this track together. I actually cannot wait to catch up in real life, COVID has been a barrier to that as she is based in Gadigal country (Syd).

Please tell us about your overall influences and connection to your heritage:

My music is very much influenced by my dysfunctional upbringing and the stories that created that environment. I’m a Kaurareg, Fijian, Tongan and Samoan woman through my mother’s side, my father’s family is caucasian with English/Irish heritage, Tasmanian convicts. I was born on Lutruwita (Tas) and grew up in Kaurna country (Adl). I’ve always felt like a bit of a misfit because I also grew up in a doomsday religious cult until 13, not surrounded by any extended family or close to my biological parents. I felt like I lived and explored many worlds, but belonged to none. When you are mixed race, and from mixed places, your identity and where you fit is one of your biggest question marks, I use my music to explore all of this.

Your single is set for release days before IWD. What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

It means a lot to me. Inclusivity and equality are my core values, I believe in the equal value in every human body, we all have the ability to lead, and have treasures and insights to offer. Being a child who was raised in a strict religious patriarchal system, I completely reject any notion that just because you were born with certain body parts or skin colour, you should be valued less, unable to lead, or should be forced to perform certain roles. I feel like there aren’t enough diverse female voices out there musically, when we have more voices and perspectives, we have more understanding for each other. This is why I’m so proud to work on this track with a female producer, Arrowbird. When I’m not making music, I work for Women’s Legal Service Queensland, an organisation that provides legal advice to women impacted by domestic violence.

What do you like to do away from music?

I hang out with my family and we go camping in our campervan and go to music festivals.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

AURORA, Stephan Moccio, ASHWARYA, Grimes, Four Tet, Charlie Cunningham.

What’s planned for 2022?

Releasing another single and music video, and I’m performing at Earth Frequency in May and then planning more of my own shows.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Vietnamese all the way. My fave place to hang out is Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island).

Wesley Black Wears The Crown In Fresh New Single ‘King Of The World’ Out Now!

by the partae March 4, 2022
written by the partae

‘Better With You’ – First Play on Triple J Home & Hosed (Nov 22)

“WB bringing driving melodies and a thumping beat that’ll take you on his ride right to the stars. Obsessed with the vocal treatment, laden with pop textures and still leaving space for a few hardhitting rap verses.” 4.5 / 5 (Pip Rasmussen, Triple J)
[About ‘Better With You’]

“Wesley Black’s shown us he can rap but on this one he’s flexing a pop side to his brain that’s equally impressive!” 4.5 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J)
[About ‘Better With You’]

“Wesley’s ‘ANGEL’ project from earlier in 2021 went fkn hard but he’s flipped it here with the driving production and melodic wash. I’m into hearing this versatility.” 4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J)
[About ‘Better With You’]

“Better With You is a vulnerable track, and one that’ll resonate with both old and new fans alike.” – Cool Accidents

“… songs like OUTLAW! and Eleven are glimpses of his brilliance in its best form shown thus far, showing his craft as a multi-faceted emcee that can move between flavours and energies with ease.” – Pilerats

“OUTLAW! is a heavy mix of electronic and trap elements alongside high energy vocals with a music video full of powerful scenes and vivid imagery.” – MILKY

Known for his searing lyrics, dynamic vocals and fierce, hard-hitting deliveries, the prince of Perth, Wesley Black, is swapping his pulsing trap beats and electronic hip-hop production for acoustic guitar suave in his latest single ‘King Of The World’ (out March 4), demonstrating that his reign isn’t limited to one genre.

With last year’s debut album ‘Angel’ hailed as a scorching alt hip-hop success, the Perth-based artist is continuing to evolve his sound, determined to showcase his sonic dynamism by incorporating strong indie-rock and pop influences into his music, as seen with last year’s single ‘Better With You’.

Celebrated for his ability to fuse his brand of scorching hip-hop/ rap/ RnB with sleek pop textures and driving rock-inspired melodies, Wesley Black’s journey to defy genres, and expectations, continues with the release of new single ‘King Of The World’.

Lead by a strong acoustic guitar melody that moves purposefully with an upbeat melancholy, ‘King Of The World’ gives Wesley Black ample space to let his distinctive vocals run the show, exposing raw timbres and impassioned hues. In stark contrast to Black’s usual propulsive beats, a subtle percussion arrives in the chorus as every ounce of fire normally reserved for body-jerking rhythms is saved for a powerful vocal delivery that lands squarely in the chest.

Black turns up the heat in the second verse with bursts of slickly spun lines, coming in hot with that unstoppable WB execution, a reminder that although the instrumental is reminiscent of a campfire acoustic, it still beats with the heart of a sleek hip-hop track.

Lyrically, ‘King Of The World’ sees Wesley Black further exploring vulnerability within his songwriting, with the track acting as a pessimistic love song, touching on an inability to see the good in oneself without relying on the presence of someone else. He states:

“‘King of the World’ is a song I wrote about finding someone who can make you feel special, even in your darkest days. It’s about the time I felt weakest, and struggled to find anything of value in my life, until I found someone special. Somehow no matter how bad things got in my own world, I could always feel like the king of the world by her side, and I can only hope I did the same in return.”

Since his debut, Wesley Black’s previous releases have seen growing support from the likes of Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Cool Accidents, Tone Deaf, Pilerats, Scenestr, MILKY, Aus Music Scene and more.

Wesley Black’s newest single ‘King Of The World’ is out on March 4 and will be launching the track at Perth’s Aardvark on March 11 with a bunch of special guests.

Dilly Set To Reveal Cathartic Single ‘Losing My Mind’ Out Now!

by the partae March 4, 2022
written by the partae

Stream ‘Losing My Mind’

A master of moreish melodies, sincere storytelling and compelling sonic dynamism, Melbourne-based artist Dilly is unveiling the latest addition to his particular fusion of indie/ alternative/ ambient styles, with new single ‘Losing My Mind’ (out March 4).

A collaboration project fronted by singer/ songwriter and producer/ engineer Darius Papak, Dilly is the culmination of years of music industry experience, which saw Darius excel as a performer, evolve as a songwriter and discover a desirable talent for sound production and engineering.

Now, Dilly combines accrued music industry expertise to deliver well-crafted sonic experiences, starting with the release of four singles in ‘Hole’, ‘Trigger’, ‘Trippin’’ and ‘Breaking Change’ last year, ahead of newest track ‘Losing My Mind’.

Immediately evoking a misty, aerial quality inspired by modern alt/ indie trail-blazers, ‘Losing My Mind’ sees Dilly embrace his ambient influences as his layered vocals echo grandly over emerging keys, guitar notes and percussive tinkerings. Like a ray of sunshine peeping through a delicate fog, the song opens up with warming indie-rock melodies, featuring charming acoustic and electric guitar movements with vibrant electronic rhythms, leading to a bright, swaying chorus.

Dilly’s vocal techniques move through the track like water, with ripples of overlapping harmonies dripping with transfixing effects, an almost imperceptible urgency brewing until Dilly’s voice expands with a bristling intensity near the song’s hopeful end.

Dilly found catharsis in writing ‘Losing My Mind’, exploring the most vulnerable parts of his life while taking time to appreciate the support, patience and love that can come from others during difficult times of hopelessness. Dilly further explains:

“‘Losing My Mind’ describes a time of dwelling in the most vulnerable parts of life, loss and feeling hopeless, as well as the positive flip-side to being in such a vulnerable place. Embracing the kindness and wisdom of others who reach out and believe in you. Gaining the strength to seek professional help. Finding support that instils a sense of hope, foundation and structure that you can build from. And ultimately, feeling life and energy as it rushes back through your system, as the clouds begin to clear and the colours of the world get stronger.”

Not only is Darius showcasing his talents via Dilly, but he is also sharing his skills as a producer with his peers, launching his innovative studio business Mix On The Move earlier in the year. Building a state-of-the-art studio in a van, Darius created Mix On The Move to allow artists to travel to places they want to record, rather than being cooped up in a studio.

Recorded and mixed at Mix On The Move, Dilly’s new single ‘Losing My Mind’ is out on March 4.

IN EYES RELEASE ANGSTY NEW SINGLE “TRIPWIRE”

by the partae March 3, 2022
written by the partae

Gold Coast alt-rock trio In Eyes have shared their soaring new single “Tripwire“, a heavy new addition to the bands collection, exploring the aftermath of a manipulative relationship.

“Tripwire” experiments with a heavier, thrashier sound while staying true to the trios alt-rock roots. Receiving its first play via triple j Unearthed TOPs on Wednesday evening, host Imogen Hanrahan coined the single “Heavy and dark as hell“, and The Soundcheck affirmed the single as “a compelling foundation for some huge things to come“.

Vocalist Rosie Jacobson rips through a gut-wrenching vocal performance, drawing from her own experiences with past naivety and blindness to manipulative and toxic behaviour. “Everyone was telling me he was bad news pretty early on, and looking back I probably could have saved myself a lot of heartache if I had listened,” Jacobson reflects, “but honestly, I was sixteen and falling in love for the first time. There was a naivety there I think we all experience when we’re young.”

Within the track lies every ounce of pent-up energy accumulated over the last eighteen months of repeated plan changes and live performance cancellations, and shows clearly the potential of the band’s fearless creativity.

In Eyes is vocalist Rosie Jacobson, guitarist Dylan Quigg and drummer Kris Unwin. Dubbed “Queensland’s newest alternative rock prodigies” by Blank GC and forecast for “a glowing career ahead” by Wall Of Sound, Gold Coast three-piece, In Eyes, have been hard at work carving a name for themselves in the Australian alternative music scene. The band come together to create a brand of heavy alt-rock that feels uniquely their own while taking inspiration from heavy-hitters including Tonight Alive, Dream State, and Northlane.

In Eyes roaring sound paired with their energetic on-stage delivery make the trio a force to be reckoned with. “Tripwire” is available and streaming everywhere now.

DENNIS COMETTI RELEASE NEW SINGLE “DEATH RATTLE”

by the partae March 3, 2022
written by the partae

Perth punk champs Dennis Cometti (The Band) are back with their newie “Death Rattle”, lifted from their double A-Side 7” Death Rattle / Limiter out today via Bargain Bin Records.

“Death Rattle” is a charging punk rock tale about three unlikely lads from Freo just trying to get to Albany to play a show, fanging it down the highway in a shit box car and running into the cops along the way.

Dennis Cometti explain: “Imagine piling all your gear into the Camry, hitting the open road and having the constant punish of cops, piss stops and, of course, the fact your car is not likely gonna make it because the steering is fucked, it keeps overheating, the tyres are flat and the stereo doesn’t work. All you can think about is getting to the show to drink the rider.”

Dennis Cometti (The Band) deal in short, sharp rock warts ‘n’ anthems about life in the world’s most remote city. In 2020, the band released their debut, self-titled album featuring the unofficial Western Australia succession anthem, “WAXIT”. With the WA border shut indefinitely at the time, “WAXIT” soundtracked glossy nightly news and A Current Affair packages about the state breaking free of the Australian Federation. Even the ABC’s election analyst Antony Green suggested the official WAXit party adopt the single as their party anthem. The track was RTRFM’s most played song of 2020 and they also picked up a WAM award for best punk/hardcore act that same year.

Since then, the boys have toured some of Western Australia’s finest venues with the likes of Kim Salmon, The Chats and even managed to cross the border and play some shows over east during with their Bargain Bin label mates.

The next stop for Dennis Cometti (if the Camry makes it) is a hometown headline gig on March 4 at Lynnots Lounge in Perth. Afterwards they will then head to the UK with The Chats and Chubby and the Gang.

Anthony Locascio explores relationship with his Greek & Italian heritage through stories, sounds & songs

by the partae March 3, 2022
written by the partae

Comedian ANTHONY LOCASCIO breaks free from the tropes of ‘wog comedy’, exploring his relationship with his Greek & Italian heritage through stories, sounds & songs.

Performing across Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Perth Comedy Festival & Sydney Comedy Festival!

DON’T CALL ME A WOG! (AN ETHNIC COMEDY STORY)

Growing up in Australia, Anthony Locascio found himself confined to a prison of ethinic & cultural stereotypes. ‘Don’t Call Me A Wog!’ (An E̶t̶h̶n̶i̶c̶ Comedy Story) is his story of escape, his convoluted encounters with the Greek & Italian heritage that so greatly affected him, and his conflicting relationship with traditional ‘wog comedy’. “Relatably, unrelatable” is Anthony’s motto – spotlighting the unique experiences that affect anyone, from the multitude of cultural backgrounds within Australia.

An emotional rollercoaster, Anthony showcases the broad range of passion & sentiment experienced by Mediterranean-Australians; from deep shame to immense pride. Be warned; ‘Don’t Call Me A Wog!’ is not just an “ethinic” comedy!

Beginning at Adelaide Fringe Festival in March, Anthony Locascio will be performing six shows, before heading back down the Western Highway to complete a run of ten shows at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, appearing April 10th to April 24th. Wrapping up his inaugural run of shows, Anthony will perform at Perth Comedy Festival & Sydney Comedy Festival throughout May. A show for all Australians, regardless of heritage or background, ‘Don’t Call Me A Wog!’ pushes Anthony’s performances further than ever before, incorporating audio-visual, music & lighting components to create an intelligent, dark & vulnerable cultural production

“My relationship with my Greek/Italian background has been a 29 year, on again, off again love story. Growing up in a country as ethnically charged as Australia, I have, at various points in my life, felt both immense pride and shame for the cultures of my grandparents. This show is the story of that emotional roller coaster; my relationship with my background throughout my childhood and adolescence has been mirrored by my use of it for comedy material.”
Anthony Locascio

“I never wanted to deal in stereotypes; that kind of humour dismisses the fact that a person’s relationship with their ethnicity is always deeply personal and unique. We don’t all live the same lives because our grandparents were born on the same rock in the Mediterranean.”
Anthony Locascio

Anthony Locascio is one of Australian comedy’s rising stars. Blending sharp wit with musings on his ethnic background, Anthony has become known for his unique storytelling style. He is a two time NSW Raw Comedy State Finalist (2018/2019), and has had two SOLD OUT runs at the Sydney Comedy Festival, as well as a SOLD OUT run at the Perth Comedy Festival in 2021. Anthony was also selected to perform at the Sydney Comedy Festival Gala 2021 at the Enmore Theatre.

Anthony forged his path in stand-up by writing an hour show after a year of performing, hiring a theatre and inviting 400 friends and acquaintances to watch. The show was posted to social media, giving Anthony a loyal fanbase, selling out shows each year since 2017 and boosting Anthony’s Youtube channel to 12,000+ subscribers, and 1,000,000+ views, with hundreds of comments from angry people in Italy and Greece responding to a video in which Anthony calls them lazy.

He appears weekly at Sydney’s best comedy venues, and has performed with some of the best comedians Australia has to offer; including Dave Hughes, Nikki Britton, Tahir, Anthony Salame, Luke Heggie and many more!

“‘Don’t Call Me A Wog!’ is a show for everyone, and a perspective on ethnicity in Australia that hasn’t been heard before, certainly not in a stand-up comedy format. This is also the first time I’m doing an Australian tour, so I hope plenty of people come out to see it!” Anthony Locascio

“This is also the first time I’ve incorporated AV, music, and lighting components in a show. My shows have previously been straight stand-up, usually with some darker, extremely vulnerable elements. I want THIS show, to be fun. Because finding my cultural equilibrium, as both a person and a comedian, has been fun!” Anthony Locascio

PRAISE FOR ANTHONY LOCASCIO

“Extremely impressive”
Jorge Menidis, Sydney & Perth Comedy Festival Artistic Director

“Anthony Locascio is one of Australia’s brightest young comedy stars. The new generation of funny. I am glad I got to work with him when I did because soon enough, he will be headlining his own big shows.”
Joe Avati, Comedian

“Witnessing Anthony Locascio’s evolution from trying to do stand-up comedy, to being a stand-up comedian, has been one of the most exciting and at times emotional rides of any act we host. This is a whole package situation; Intelligent (sometimes too much so), conflicting cultural backgrounds to draw from, unshakable drive, and of course he’s actually funny.”
Magic Mic Comedy Sydney

“I’ve seen Anthony perform in venues all across Sydney and NSW, and he has reliably proven that he is absolutely one of the best fresh talents rising through the ranks. Not only is he very funny, Anthony is also a hard worker and excellent marketer, meaning he can be relied on to fill rooms with new audiences”
Hugh Inglis, Sydney Comedy Store

“One of Australia’s best new comics.”
Anthony Salame, Comedian

“Inserting himself into an audience of strangers with confidence and loud laughter triggers,
one of Anthony Locascio’s many funny themes is pettily not taking praise very well. Especially people saying afterwards “Great Show”. Unfortunately, hearing that phrase is something he’s just going to have to get used to.”

RocKwiz’s Really Really Good Friday set to light up Hamer Hall once more

by the partae March 1, 2022
written by the partae
RocKwiz’s Really Really Good Friday is back and ready for a triumphant return to Hamer Hall on Friday 15 April.

After last year’s fabulous show at the majestic Sidney Myer Music Bowl as part of Live at the Bowl the gang are back for another night of action-packed entertainment.

Brian Nankervis and Julia Zemiro will lead festivities with special guests and the usual shenanigans that come with RocKwiz’s annual Easter show.
“There’s something special about Hamer Hall. The room is so luxurious. It’s a beautiful theatre and whenever you perform in a space that is so expertly designed for performance, everything feels a bit richer. It’s a pinch yourself moment performing there. There’s also a degree of pride that this funny little show that started in the Gershwin Room at St Kilda’s Esplanade Hotel in 2004 has grown and developed into a show that tours nationally, performing in magnificent theatres, town halls and huge entertainment centres,” says Nankervis.
It will be the sixth collaboration between Arts Centre Melbourne and the RocKwiz team with Really Really Good Friday becoming a fixture date on the Melbourne arts calendar.
“This wonderful tradition has developed over the years, and we have people that come to every Good Friday show. They know it’s going to be here; they don’t need to sit around at home feeling sad on Good Friday, they can come to Arts Centre Melbourne,” says Nankervis.
“They know they’ll see an exciting show, with household names, up-and-coming stars and a couple of comedians who are here for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. And, given the RocKwiz tradition of inviting audience members to try out for a seat at one of the desks… they might actually be IN the show!”
“We’re very excited to be able to perform live again. So many of us have lost gigs and work opportunities and audiences have suffered not being able to see shows … so here’s a chance to get things back to normal. Let’s embrace it. We’re always pushing ourselves to come up with something interesting, something challenging … and playing in this beautiful theatre always inspires us.”
★★★★★ “What a night!” – Theatre People
“This was about as much fun as this reviewer has ever had at the Cabaret Festival” – In Daily
“I simply did not want the evening to end” – Stage Whispers
“seamless, funny, witty, sincere and charming. Not a whiff of cynicism in the show. We all said it was the most fun we’d had in months. A tonic.” – Good Weekend, London Evening Standard

PRAISE FOR LEWIS CANCUT

“Masterfully produced, genre-defying sounds”
DJ Mag

“Lewis CanCut is the perfect ode to pop, making him one of the most prolific
electronic producers in the country”

Purple Sneakers

“A rewarding exercise in music consumption”
Stoney Roads

“Percussive, progressive and party-starting worldbeat”
The Music

Naarm-based producer, sound designer, composer and DJ, Lewis Cancut, is today releasing his debut mixtape, Magic Circle via his long-time home at NLV Records. Featuring the previously released track ‘The Wizard’, the mixtape also features his new single ‘Freak’ featuring London MC Thai Chi Rosé. Both singles are due to be released together on a limited-edition split 7”. LISTEN HERE + ORDER VINYL HERE

‘Freak’ takes things deeper into the club, with the London MC offering up the driving vocal sample throughout. Though the pair live on opposite ends of the earth, the collaboration came to be through NLV Records’ label head, Nina Las Vegas, who previously worked with Thai Chi Rosé on her 2020 single ‘Impossible’.

“There was no conversation at all about where she was going to take it, she just sent back some ideas,” Lewis said of the collaboration. “I’ve always loved a lot of the electro that came out of LA during the 80s from artists such as Egyptian Lover and The Unknown DJ (music with a lot of references to ‘Freaks’), so I was really surprised when she sent back the vocals. It’s like she picked up on the influences straight away.”

Lewis is no stranger to the NLV Records roster, with his debut release on the label featuring on their inaugural Sampler back in 2015. He has since released two EP’s (2016’s Indoor Rainforest and 2019’s Air Condition) and a bunch of singles, with his new mixtape Magic Circle being his biggest and most ambitious project with the label to date.

The mixtape aptly kicks off with the title track, throwing us headfirst into this pliant sonic world that Lewis has crafted over the course of the project’s eight tracks.

The opening title track, ‘Magic Circle’ is striking without percussion, instead of using the breath of an undulating sound design to keep time. This ambient opener is soon contrasted by ‘Ghost Track’, which instead offers up punchy electro; splicing together haunting arps, a punchy 101 and crisp percussion to make for a hypnotic blend of spooky sounds. It’s a sonic pallet that’s drawn straight from Lewis’s love of electro’s founding artists.

“Having so much time during lockdown without the pressure of doing shows, I ended up listening to records for hours and hours each day,” he said. “Especially – heaps of electro, synth-pop, and boogie, all very synthetic styles of music that have heavily influenced me over the years. The way electronic music can be made almost from nothing like conjured out of thin air is a kind of magic, and these records each became like magic circles,”

On ‘Labyrinth’, Lewis expands on some of the previous sounds from his 2019 EP, Air Condition; breathing new life into the fizzle and pop of his previously carbonated sonics. Contrasting the saccharine sweetness of the track’s bounce with a heavy-set, pitched-down vocal sample, the track is tied together via a dynamic sweep of carefully-modulated pads. The sound design truly makes you feel as though you’re lost in a labyrinth, turning corners and cycling through sounds faster than you can find the exit.

But before long, you find the ‘Hidden Fortress’, where the mixtape’s electro influence feels most prominent. Stormy samples dot the ominous soundscape, whilst a revolving arp breathes in and out of the foreground. Squelchy acid and a panned laser add to the chaos, causing the storm to come to a head. On ‘Soft Machines’, Lewis blends breakbeat with softer pads, contrasting the hurricane we previously heard. A pulsing acid-line rips through the false softness, tearing any sense of security to shreds. As with the rest of the mixtape, he doesn’t allow you to settle into any one particular mood before he rips the carpet out from under you.

Rounding out the mixtape is ‘Royal Court’, a slower-paced call-and-response between two differed vocals. A muddy, pitched-down vocal chases a pitched-up high, telling a story of push-and-pull against this careful tapestry of blended 90’s rave stabs.

To celebrate the release of Magic Circle, Lewis CanCut will be having a launch party at Capers Thornbury on Saturday 5th of March from 4pm – 9pm. He will also be joined by special guests Nina Las Vegas, FOURA, Paz, Swick and Ransom. Tickets are available HERE.

JEAN DAWSON SHARES NEW SONG + VIDEO ‘P*RN ACTING*’

by the partae February 28, 2022
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR JEAN DAWSON

“[Jean Dawson] is one of my favourite, new discoveries of the past year.”
NPR

“He just makes the music he wants to see in the world, for people like him:
the outsiders, the latchkey kids, the non-conformists”

i-D

“Jean Dawson is having the most fun with his music.
His blend of pop melodies and hip-hop production is perfect for 2020”

FADER

“Jean Dawson is a rare artistic breed”
Hypebeast

“Dawson’s debut sounds like one of the most sophisticated DIY art projects of the year.
We’re so used to genre-blending that almost nothing surprises anymore,
but Dawson pulls off something unexpected in every song”

Pigeons & Planes

“Dawson blends distorted guitars with vintage drum machine sounds,
switching between singing, chanting, and rapping. Listening to it feels more like
flipping through different radio stations rather than one distinct project—it’s sometimes pop, sometimes punk, sometimes hip-hop”

Noisey

“Raised on the cultural border between Mexico and the US, his vibrant approach to music-making isn’t about bending genres for the heck of it, but about being honest to himself and the group of outsiders drawn to his creative expression”
NME

Jean Dawson, undoubtedly one of today’s groundbreaking, experimental pop artists, returns with a voracious new track entitled ‘P*RN ACTING*‘ and a staggering music video companion. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

The release ushers in a new era for Jean sonically and personally. Directed by Bradley J. Calder, the visual is laced with an element of chaos and captures the humanity in all of us: we’re all just humans finding our way at the end of the day. ‘P*RN ACTING*‘ showcases Jean’s striking ability to create deeply genuine connections time after time, by spotlighting larger universal themes communicated through his own revelations.

Watch: Jean Dawson, ‘P*RN Acting*’ (Official Video)

Sonically, Jean‘s music sees him moving through and referencing generations of rock, via an array of feelings and experiences unique to Jean, but universal to all. The outcome is a sound that goes beyond the pop-punk label he’s often been saddled with, posing Jean Dawson as a figure bound to forever alter the boundaries of pop music in general. Of the release, Jean shares “We are all the same, we are all bags of flesh, tryna prove that we’re not as bad as we know we are.”

Jean is a leader amongst a newly-born generation of kids straddling multiple cultures and worlds, operating comfortably within their own skin. His music serves as a score for the life-and-times of kids like him (us). His one-of-a-kind sound and impact on the current music landscape have caught the attention of notable artists such as SZA, Miguel, and A$AP Rocky, all of whom have worked in the studio with Jean recently. Through his first two projects, Pixel Bath and Bad Sports, Jean has amassed millions of streams and garnered large critical acclaim by NPR, i-D, The FADER, PAPER Magazine, Pigeons & Planes, NME, MTV News, Remezcla, Hypebeast, Essence, Nylon and many more. Stay tuned for more to come from Jean.

The Kraken launches the After Dark project

by the partae February 28, 2022
written by the partae

The Kraken Black Spiced Rum has announced the launch of the After Dark project, a collaboration designed to connect up-and-coming Australian artists, through their stories told through lyrics and melodies.

The Australian arts industry has been decimated by COVID-19 and continues to suffer through ongoing restrictions. To help support the music industry, The Kraken has teamed up with five up and coming Aussie artists to curate the ultimate playlist, After Dark, hosted on Spotify.

Artists including genre-defying Jackson Brazier (@jxn_), Moutaiz Al-Obaidi, (@motez), Jerome Farah (@jerome.farah), Steve Cousins (steve_cousins_music)  and Toby Nicholls (@nerve.mp3), have selected a mix of music that represents the moody and mysterious moment of Australia’s twilight.

The playlist imitates dusk with a subtle hint of brightness and melody, engulfed in darker, edgier beats and basslines. It’s moody and auspicious, urging listeners to make peace with chaos and change.

The artists sat down with The Kraken to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the music industry and how the shift in focus created a new source of inspiration.

Motez, Adelaide based record producer, musician and DJ, said his focus shifted when the reality of the pandemic hit. He took that time to create a completely new body of work titled ‘Soulitude’, made up of five emotive, ambient, electronic compositions which stemmed from his newfound state of isolation. Motez’s hunger to give back to his fans heightened as he continued to push the boundaries and explore new sounds and ways to produce, releasing what he calls, his most exciting work yet.

Motez noted: “It was hard to pick only a handful songs for this particular playlist as it’s my favourite time, where the darkness creates the promise of an exciting night. I love how music can reflect that through a melody engulfed in darker, edgier beats and basslines, it’s sensual and filled with promise.”

After Dark features both local and global artists, and includes the exciting new release, Nintendo, from R&B and pop music singer-songwriter-guitarist and internet personality, JXN. His inspiration for the new song drew on how he feels played by a romantic partner. A true reflective moment, drawn from real life events, that was written during twilight.

Brisbane rapper, Nerve, selected music to show how global music can be appreciated all over the world, and how people can connect through great sounds that breaks .

Nerve stated: “It’s awesome to partner with Kraken and celebrate homegrown Australian talent. I think what’s exciting about the playlist is that Australian music is standing on par with international artists. In the next few years, we will see a lot more eyes and ears focus on music from Down Under, especially from the hip-hop space.”

By honouring some of Australia’s hottest up and coming talent, The Kraken hopes to bring people together during twilight, to enjoy their favourite local music and reconnect over an ice-cold refreshing Kraken and Dry or Kraken and Cola premix.

After Dark playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ggaqB39c3iVnXjw36uerF?si=2d8827ca2d0e4dff

The playlist has been designed to be experienced during twilight, when the atmosphere is only partially illuminated by the sun. A time when there’s only enough light left to illuminate the surroundings that are slowly fading away and brining the promise of an exciting night. Similar to the twilight occasion, The Kraken has character, independence and mystery.

RRP:

  • The Kraken, Black Spiced Rum & Cola Bottles 330mL –$28 per pack of 4
  • The Kraken, Black Spiced Rum & Dry Bottles 330mL – $28 per pack of 4

Available to purchase:

The Kraken, Black Spiced Rum premix range is available for purchase from BWS, Dan Murphy’s, Liquorland, First Choice and all good bottle shops nationwide.

About Talent

Jackson Brazier (@jxn_)

Jackson Brazier, who performs as JXN, is an Australian R&B and pop music singer-songwriter-guitarist and internet personality. After making an impressive debut in 2018 with the launch of his first single “Solitude”, JXN followed up with the releases of “Red Lights”, a collaboration with New York rapper, A  Boogie Wit Da Hoodie in March last year and “Going Off” featuring Bronx rapper, A$AP Twelvyy, followed by breakup jam “Just Okay”.  He returned in September this year releasing his undeniably catchy single “Cotton Candy” which received strong playlisting support from Spotify, landing in Get Popped, Fresh Finds, New Music Friday and Pop n’ Fresh as well as New Music Daily, New In Pop, Bedroom Pop and Pop in Spatial Audio from Apple Music.

Moutaiz Al-Obaidi, (@motez)

Moutaiz Al-Obaidi, known professionally as Motez, is an Australian record producer, musician and DJ. Motez was a refugee born in Iraq and moved to Adelaide in 2006. Motez’ soundscape pushes the boundaries of your regular club producer.

As the reality of COVID-19 hit, Motez’ focus shifted to a completely new body of work titled ‘Soulitude’. Five emotive, ambient, electronic compositions that stemmed from his newfound state of isolation. The EP showcased a brand-new side to Motez’ ever-evolving production capabilities and was premiered through a grand sunset live-performance stream. Expect Motez to continue pushing the boundaries as he explores new sounds and ways to produce what is his most exciting work yet.

Jerome Farah (@jerome.farah)

Jerome Farah, is an Australian rapper. Farah co-wrote and co-produced “Waiting” with Kian before releasing his debut single in 2020.

Toby Nicholls (@nerve.mp3)

Brisbane rapper and producer, Nerve, wears many hats and has mastered many sounds. His multi-pronged approach to hip-hop has made him one of the most versatile and talented artists in the space, widely expanding his sonic portfolio with each release. Nerve spent his early days rapping over boom-bap beats, before delving into the world of grime where he spat comfortably in viral cyphers alongside legends like Alex Jones, Fraksha and Diem.

2021 saw Nerve release his most diverse project yet in ‘Tall Poppy Season,’ an EP which saw him further incorporate melodic vocals and vulnerable themes into his repertoire. Lead single ‘One In A Million’ saw him hit high rotation on triple j, while ‘Walk & Talk 4’ also topped the YouTube trending charts.

Steve Cousins (@steve_cousins_music)

Based out of Phillip Island Victoria, Steve Cousins is a new wave loop artist. Specialising in vibrant live multi-instrumental looping with unassuming vocals, sultry guitar and violin solos and an energetic shoeless on-stage presence that is always looking to keep vibes high. With influences ranging from Matt Corby to the Jungle Giants and Ocean Alley to Tash Sultana, his love for music and life shine through in his unapologetically honest approach to song writing and performing.
