What is your name and role within Chutney? Cal Hughes, lead guitarist of Chutney.  Where are you currently based? I live in Burleigh Heads in our hometown of the Gold Coast, QLD.  How did you first start playing music and how did Chutney form? I began playing music from a very young age, playing cello, trumpet and bass guitar within the different classical and jazz bands in primary/ high school - I began teaching myself guitar when I was twelve so I could start making music that better reflected my personal tastes, and formed Chutney with Matt & Pat in mid-2019 after playing in a variety of different bands throughout our early twenties. Matt and I were playing in another local GC band Hot Coffee when Matt began writing a collection of rock songs that didn’t quite fit the electronic/hip-hop sound that Hot Coffee was known for, and I was very keen to form a new group that featured myself on guitar and matched the guitar-driven indie rock that the two of us primarily listened to - we quickly recruited Pat into the mix and began to write Matt’s songs into full band arrangements when we realised we had something special brewing. Andy was added as the final piece of the puzzle on drums and it’s been full speed ahead since then.  What's been happening recently? Working hard on new releases! As consumers of music ourselves we understand how hungry the public is for new music and we have been focussing on finding the line between quality over quantity - providing artistically consistent music while still keeping the momentum rolling from release to release. With this in mind, we are planning for two further releases by the end of the year, as well as maintaining our live performance output with a number of significant headline and support slots over the coming months.   Your latest single 'Talk' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? The sound of this track is what we consider the quintessential “Chutney” sound - riffy, bass-driven verses transitioning into a layered guitar-led breakdown, and culminating with a euphoric and atmospheric chorus with soaring, singalong vocals. In terms of the vocal approach, Matt opted for hip-hop laced verses to match the high energy feel, before kicking into the harmony-laden melodies of the pre-chorus and choruses.  In terms of the lyrical content, Talk is about looking out for your mates when they’re having a hard time - about how everyone has struggles from time to time, and how you are so much more important than you may ever realise. It is a song about mental health and the importance of leaning on those close to you in times of need. We wanted to create an uplifting, euphoric song that tackles sensitive subject matters while providing a positive ending - your mates will always be there for you, and having that talk is the first step to making a positive change. How did you go about writing Talk? The song began with Pat writing the bass riff that is featured heavily throughout the song, and Matt writing out the chordal arrangement and vocal melodies on his acoustic guitar with this riff in mind. The track then fell into my lap to build out the song in terms of forming a fully-fledged band arrangement, and I added a number of guitar elements which took the song from the hip-hoppy Gorillaz feel that the original demo takes on into more of that guitar-driven Chutney sound. Her music is a vessel for her to build relationships and understanding with the many identities she holds. The Oot N’ Oots Premiere

A touching ode to our favourite four legged friends (special shout out to their beloved cat Moses…may he rest in peace),  Pets is a folk-pop confection for the ages, drawing on a myriad of styles flavoured with classic roots vibes and infused with The Oots signature style – an instant jam!  “Maybe in the spirit of White Album era Beatles musically, the song has a roving melody and a stripped down arrangement featuring accordion,” says the band.  “Glockenspiel, and beautiful violin performances provided by our friends from the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra Sarah Anderson and Ashley Kroecher.”

CFMA and WCMA nominated The Oot n’ Oots make kids music that is, to quote Jerry Garcia, not for kids only. Drawing on diverse influences from the history of rock n’ roll, this is a band with chops, soul, and swagger. Their original songs are wildly imaginative, brimming with humour and inspiration. The band includes 14-year-old Ruth Cipes (voice, ukulele), described as “…a force of nature.” by Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child host Bill Childs, with her dad Ezra (voice, guitar) and uncles Ari (voice, guitar), Gabe (voice, bass), and Matthew (voice, drums). Ruth trades lead vocal duties with Ari and Ezra. In performance the group casts a spell of freedom, lightheartedness, and laughter. This is truly entertainment for the whole family, enlivening community, joy, and understanding through free-spirited musical performance. The first single from the band’s third album, “Thank You Universe”, was released June 3, 2020, and was named “#3 Song of the Year” in a Kid’s Radio Programmers Poll. The band’s previous releases have been nominated for two Western Canadian Music Awards and a Canadian Folk Music Award, and their second album Electric Jellyfish Boogaloo was named on the Fids and Kamily Awards top 20 albums for kids and families in 2018.

Beach Body ‘Almost Summer’ Premiere

Written in the spring of 2020 whilst holed up in a small cabin near a deserted Northern Saskatchewan village – and then recorded in a funeral-home-turned-recording-studio (SoulSound Studio) – the new music is a testament to their creative output and consistent drive for new, fresh and forward facing sounds. “I started writing ‘Almost Summer’ in 2018, when I was asked to write a theme song for my favourite little Regina music festival Swamp Fest,” says lead man Rory Copithorn. “I watched Wes Craven’s 1982 film Swamp Thing on repeat for a few days for some inspiration and the final version of the song has a not so subtle lyrical reference to the movie which inspired it. All in all, it’s a song about looking back at a time when all I could do was look forward, thinking real life would start some-place on the horizon.”

Formed in the summer of 2017 in a garage in the heart of the Canadian prairies, Beach Body took their time to marinade in their creative juices.  And that same garage is where they would perfect their laid-back brand of landlocked indie rock.  With three EP’s already under their belt  (“Plain Life” – 2017, “Curb Ciggies” – 2018, and “Beach Body Presents: The Southside Coyote Boys” – 2019)  the band is thrilled to be releasing their new tunes to the world.

AEM ‘Hot In The City’ Premiere

With a long-standing presence in the industry AEM has begun moving away from her former genre of Country (as well as her namesake Amy Metcalfe) and has focused on new endeavors. Back in the country world she found success with Billboard charting, award noms (and even writing for legend Reba McEntire) – but she found her true calling when she  recorded vocals for “Letting Go” with DJ Kav. The song led to her performing an opening slot at a sold out Chainsmokers concert in Calgary Alberta and it cemented the decision to turn her focus to new goals in the music industry as it just felt “right”.

Changing her frequent destination from Nashville to Los Angeles AEM has already made a splash on the west coast writing and gaining the attention of writer and producer Dubkiller. Working with Rock Mafia for many years Dubkiller has had his hand in producing and writing for artists like Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Zedd, Brittany Spears and more.

Currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark
 
How did you first start playing music?
 
Started playing the classical guitar at the age of seven. My dad was what got me into it all, he would always play and sing and I was so jealous of him being able to do that.
 
What’s been happening recently?
 
A lot! Personally, just got married and that has been an exciting journey :). Musically just working on my next project and getting into a lot of sessions with other writers and producers.
 
Your new single ‘Overthink’ is out now of your upcoming EP ‘Skellies’ what influenced the sound and songwriting for Overthink?
 
Sound-wise this whole EP is super quirky and different compared to what I usually do. I really honed in on the voice acting and decided to be as silly and weird as I could. ‘Overthink’ is just me being open about all the extremes my brain goes to, I’m a textbook over thinker and felt like it was important for me to write that out for myself.
How did you go about writing overthink?
 
I think I was just having one of those days where I couldn’t write because I was just overthinking the writing process. I got so annoyed I just started shouting in my room ‘I overthink I overthink I overthink’ and I really liked the rhythm behind how I was shouting that and just started singing each line chromatically while following a harmonic minor scale. It instantly stuck with me and knew there was something there.
What does Overthink mean to you?
 
It’s just a reminder to myself to take it easy and let life take its natural course. I often feel like my overthinking is a huge perk, because I can really plan situations out and avoid running into trouble, but at the same time it can be super limiting and take the joy out of simple joyful situations.
 
Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
 
I wrote this end of October 2020, dark halloween season, my favourite season haha. I was working with Malthe Seierup who actually co-wrote and produced this full EP with me. At the time we were working out of this underground bunker studio in the centre of Copenhagen. It was located right outside a park, had no running water or toilet. It was dingey, dark and reeked of cigarettes and alcohol due to other people using the other studios. That said, it was a vibe, I really liked writing down there. There was also this super old, out of tune piano we’d always jam around and write songs on. Glad I don’t work there anymore, but I kind of liked it and it inspired a lot of great music!
 
How did you approach the recording process?
 
Generally I’d go into the studio with a melody and some lyrics. I would just play and sing the song on my guitar and we’d start building it out on the computer from there on.
 
Please tell us about the EP and how it came about:
 
It all started with the first song ‘break the norm’ the first single from the EP. I was having a hard time finding my new direction after my last EP ‘bouncy boy’. I was also watching a lot of Tim Burton movies and documentaries about Disney and their whole relationship with Tim Burton’s team. It inspired me so much and I just felt like I wanted to take that act-y, quirky route with this EP. Again most of these songs were written around Halloween season, which tends to be the best season for me to write to be honest, something always clicks for me around that time of year.
 
Who are you listening to at the moment?
 
Listening a lot to Upsahl these days, really love her sound, her vocals and her writing. Super inspired by her!
 
What do you like to do away from music?
 
I love to cook a lot but music right now is my ‘away’. I have a full time job, so in my spare time music is what I do for the most part. I’m also just super into mafia movies and series. Been binge watching the Sopranos this last month.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

In 2021, The Lazy Eyes have truly held nothing back with their own curated festival, Lazyfest, a sold out headline tour and new music releases swiftly following their breakout in January of last year. With EP2 they pick up where EP1 left off, and now with their new lineup they reveal the product of time spent bringing new recordings to life. Each song on EP2 channels a different path and emotion to the last, between love songs and jam songs, The Lazy Eyes deliver a sonic pathway through each twisted journey in life. Joining the lovelorn ‘Nobody Taught Me‘ and the polychromatic trip of ‘Where’s My Brain???‘, is latest single ‘The Island‘, a continuation from the story they began with ‘The Seaside‘, The Lazy Eyes reveal is a song for escapism, “A song that while listening, you can close your eyes to and let your imagination create imagery.”

Lifting the veil on ‘The Island‘s making, the band share: “The Island was written about a place where none of The Lazy Eyes band members have been in real life, and acts as the sequel to The Seaside. An imaginary island that is a sort of utopia but is also filled with mystery. The writing process and a demo recording took place in Harvey’s childhood bedroom as he recalls – ‘All I remember was recording a terrible demo on GarageBand and really struggling to sing it because I had a cold that day. It’s interesting to hear the demo these days because you can hear the parts before they were refined as a result of playing the song over and over live. The demo also doesn’t include the final guitar melody which was added by Itay in a rehearsal and really finished the song off with a bang.”

The Lazy Eyes are Harvey Geraghty (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Itay Shachar (vocals, guitar), Leon Karagic (bass) and Noah Martin (drums). At 15 years old, they met at a performing arts high school which provided fertile ground to pursue their creative endeavours. In the time since, the group have built a cult following with their magnetic live set. Long before their debut single, word of them spread like wildfire. This eventually reached the BBC’s Abbie McCarthy who aired the then unreleased ‘Cheesy Love Song‘ during a takeover on Australia’s national youth broadcaster, triple j. In the year that followed, their debut EP saw The Lazy Eyes sell out headline shows, amass a combined 3 million streams and receive praise from Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson, Bandcamp, Atwood Magazine, American Songwriter, Monster Children, land at #17 on triple j Unearthed’s Top 50 Most Played Artists of 2020 and many more.

In the time since, the group have worked hard to finesse their craft, with EP2 working to show how much more the music students had to offer following their acclaimed debut that landed The Lazy Eyes on the coveted NME 100 for 2021. Initially written while still in high school, it was only until recently that the songs of EP2 were taken to the recording studio. The band share “These are the first tracks we recorded using Ableton (previously using GarageBand) which opened up a whole lot more possibilities. These new tools inspired us to make our recordings more tapestry-like, inspired by albums like Bon Voyage by Melody’s Echo Chamber.” The response so far? Praise from V Man, Complex, Happy Mag, Gigwise, NME, KCRW, Alt Citizen, FBi Radio, Double J and Unearthed, Spin, Dublab, Northern Transmissions and others for ‘Nobody Taught Me‘ and ‘Where’s My Brain???‘; plus rave reviews for Lazyfest from the Sydney Morning Herald, Life Without Andy and more anticipation for their upcoming appearance at Bris Day Out. If EP2 saw The Lazy Eyes find their feet, there’s no doubt their jackpot will come faster than most anticipate.

Having recently announced details for the release of their second album, Welcome Break, out on Heavenly Recordings on October 8, 2021, Amsterdam’s Pip Blom have today shared the latest track ‘It Should Have Been Fun’.

Pip Blom speak about new track ‘It Should Have Been Fun’ by saying: “When writing the tracks for the record I wanted there to be a song that didn’t have the structure of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus 2x. It’s a common structure of course and I figured it could be cool to switch it up a bit. When the track starts it feels like it’s going to be a very sensitive, calm song. The verses capture the feeling of sadness, disappointment in yourself and someone else. But when the chorus starts the energy switches. It’s more angry, being fed up, wanting to change something, like there’s a tipping point. I really like how the track has these different parts that flow into each other. I can’t wait to play this track live and really give it our all when the final chorus hits.”

‘It Should Have Been Fun’ alongside the rest of the album was self-produced and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (PJ Harvey, St Vincent, Queens of the Stone Age) and recorded at Ramsgate’s Big Jelly Studios.

Following an extensive touring schedule, which saw the Dutch 4-piece roam over field, oceans, and Glastonbury’s John Peel stage following the release of their debut record Boat, Pip Blom immediately began to gather all her soaked-up inspirations taken from the road, cosy down in a room of her parent’s house (which she shares with her brother and fellow bandmate Tender Blom) and over three months wrote twenty songs – sixteen of which were to become demos for the band to structure and flesh out, once in the studio together.

With plans slightly complicated by the Covid-19 crisis, the band decamped to their favourite Big Jelly Studios in Ramsgate and after 14-days of quarantine set to work recording their second album over three weeks with engineer Al Harle.

The result, Welcome Break (and yes, the title is inspired by the ubiquitous serviced dotted along Britain’s motorways) resonates with about as much decisive allure as their previous album Boat, but this time with a bit more contemporary chaos to boot.

Where Boat reckoned as a fresh-faced, yet gloriously fearless game-changer, Welcome Break is the self-assured older sibling who, with an additional year or two behind themselves, isn’t afraid to speak out, take lead, and instigate a liberated revolution-come-bliss-out.

Yet another master-class in effortless song-writing and feel-good-chorus’, as Pip explains, the secret behind the continuing run of form on Welcome Break is fairly simple – “I just really like catchy songs and I feel like that’s something we do well. It’s not sugar-coated-happy Pop…they’re more like ‘Titanic’ pop songs…”

On the release of their debut album, Your Grandparents share, “Thru My Window is an alternative commentary on love in early adulthood. Your Grandparents make music that hints to the nostalgia of previous decades without feeling dated. Nor is the trio cemented to just one genre, either. The friends founded Your Grandparents, using the moniker as a nod to the elders who introduced them to classic artists and inspired their musical tastes, in 2014. Originally, the trio released rap music, but their work quickly grew to incorporate the various genres that have inspired their musicianship. When asked about the albums that have inspired them lately, the men rattle off a variety of projects including D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Erykah Badu’s Baduism, The Fugees’ The Score and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. Today, Your Grandparents release music that nods to funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, blues and other genres.

Fueled by a recent trip to Paris, ghettoblasterman says the group’s new album Thru My Window is about “the different types of loves that you can encounter.” Far away from their native Los Angeles and experiencing the romantic challenges that come with dating in your early 20s, the three experienced the emotional and musical clarity that allowed them to finish the project in months. It’s their quickest creative endeavour to date. Thru My Window is also the first project where the trio could utilise other musicians and live instrumentation, resulting in their strongest productions to date.

‘So Damn Fly‘, the project’s lead single, is anchored around a psychedelic bassline and electronic guitar licks. The video, directed and produced by Your Grandparents, further displays the 70s era that inspired the single. The video for ‘Tomorrow‘, a song about “pursuing a love interest despite the uncertainty it involves,” borrows from the Blaxploitation films popularized in the same decade. Your Grandparents utilised various recording techniques to get the desired effect for their genre-blending debut album. The group credits their cohesive sound to their years-long friendship, which began when they were each about 13 years old. “Our tastes have kind of combined into one. There’s not a lot of communication on the creation end that has to happen. We just fall into place,” ghettoblasterman says.

Following on from the release of her single ‘Self-Discover’, Brisbane hip hop artist Jacinta Lal unleashes her debut collection of material in the DIVYA EP.

The record is an intensely personal one for the young artist: not only is the title part of her name, but its meaning (‘divine’) is one that Jacinta has expanded upon through the music to become synonymous with feminine power and courage.

The EP came together across sessions with engineers Harry Fox and James Angus in Jacinta’s hometown of Brisbane. The six tracks on the DIVYA record capture different elements of Jacinta’s artistry and personal energy – great snapshots of the creative wave she was riding at the time of writing.

Previous singles ‘Self-Discover’, ‘Sheila’ and ‘Personal’ exude the confidence she naturally brings to the mic, while songs like ‘Funky Fierce’ and ‘M.V.P’ have seen Jacinta pour stacks of personality and biting style into each bar.

“To me, DIVYA are the ones who dare to show the world their true colours. DIVYA are the ambitious who fiercely go after their dreams. DIVYA are the strong-hearted. Today, CHVRCHES have shared their new single ‘Good Girls’, taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album Screen Violence, set for release on August 27. ‘Good Girls’ premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1.

‘Good Girls’ was the second song the band wrote for the new album, setting the lyrical tone for Screen Violence. Frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s powerful vocal delivers the unapologetic and vital lyrics on the misogynistic ideals inflicted upon women with urgency: “Good girls don’t cry / And good girls don’t lie / And good girls justify but I don’t / Good girls don’t die / And good girls stay alive / And good girls satisfy but I won’t”.  

“The opening line (killing your idols is a chore) was something I wrote after listening to some friends arguing about the present day implications of loving certain problematic male artists – I was struck by the lengths that people would go to in order to excuse their heroes and how that was so juxtaposed to my own experiences in the world. Women have to constantly justify their right to exist and negotiate for their own space. We’re told that bad things don’t happen to Good Girls. That if you curate yourself to fit the ideal – keep yourself small and safe and acceptable – you will be alright, and it’s just not f**king true.” 

The video for ‘Good Girls’ is the final in a lo-fi, nostalgic, and analogue-inspired trilogy directed by multi-disciplinary artist Scott Kiernan, following previous singles ‘He Said She Said’ and ‘How Not To Drown’. On the making of the trilogy of videos, director Scott Kiernan says: “The video for ‘He Said She Said’ dealt with doubt in making of one’s own image while under the manipulation of another; while ‘How Not to Drown’ sought an exit from a low, from feeling penned in by larger power structures, and refusing to succumb to them again. But ‘Good Girls’ portrays a certain learned confidence in knowing who and what you are, despite what others might conform to themselves. It’s having a clear vision, or something like a compound eye that can see at all angles. So, like ‘How Not to Drown’ before it, ‘Good Girls’ continues down from a scene in the first video and steers it to a new parallel conclusion. Near the end, we find Lauren spiralling on the studio floor, surrounded by the crew and ghosts of the previous videos, as the entire image cycle finally comes to a halt.”

‘Good Girls’ follows on from previous single ‘How Not To Drown’ featuring one of the band’s musical heroes, The Cure frontman Robert Smith. ‘How Not To Drown’ was released in June alongside the announcement of Screen Violence, and premiered via Zane Lowe. The accompanying official video featured both CHVRCHES and Robert Smith, with its claustrophobic, film-noir imagery a continuation of the aesthetic presented with the album’s debut single ‘He Said She Said’. Following its release, Robert Smith also remixed the single, telling The FADER he wanted his version of the single to “conjure up an irresistible midnight sea with dark mesmeric currents”. 

Screen Violence was recorded almost entirely remotely between Los Angeles and Glasgow, members Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty and Iain Cook self-produced and mixed the album via video calls and audio sharing programs to create something that is unique and special, but inherently CHVRCHES. The album will be released August 27 2021 – pre-order is available HERE.
