Praise for Cedric Burnside

“Cedric Burnside carries the mantle – the joy and the burdens and the history of the North Mississippi hill country blues, a style like no other in Southern Music” – The Bitter Southerner

“Grammy-nominated Blues musician Cedric Burnside remembers his roots” – NPR Weekend Edition

“The Big Bad Burnside Sound is back… and how!” – MOJO

“Cedric expands the sonic landscape in a way not too many other artists can do…while ushering the genre into a beautifully Black future.” – Ebony

“Hypnotic hill country…with live-wire playing.” – Rolling Stone

“Timely and timeless…showcases the best of what Cedric does” – Afropunk

“Cedric proudly carries the mantle of Mississippi hill country blues into the 21st century”
– Afropop Worldwide

GRAMMY-nominated musician Cedric Burnside has shared the cathartic opening track from his new album I Be Trying – out June 25 on Single Lock Records / Remote Control Records – today: an acoustic-driven reflection on recent times aptly titled ‘The World Can Be So Cold‘. As only a true Mississippi bluesman can, Burnside channels those acute experiences of pain, anger, frustration and hurt into an intimate, vulnerable and profound look into his inner life. Recorded at Memphis’ hallowed Royal Studios, Cedric draws from his years collaborating with his legendary grandfather RL Burnside while crafting a bold, contemporary Black American sound that serves as a masterclass in Mississippi Hill Country Blues from its greatest living practitioner.

Watch a behind-the-scenes clip of the recording of ‘The World Can Be So Cold‘ from Royal Studios HERE. Burnside previously shared ‘Step In‘ from the Boo Mitchell-produced record, which was met with much early excitement. Watch HERE.

I Be Trying marks Cedric‘s latest chapter in a career that began at age 13 with an unmatched musical education in his grandfather’s touring band. Now serving as the leading global ambassador for the Hill Country Blues, a genre at once African and American, southern and Mississippian – local and universal – the album also features musicians like North Mississippi All-Stars frontman Luther Dickinson, Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell and New Orleans drummer Reed Watson (John Paul White, etc). With a release on the artist-run Southern independent label Single Lock Records, the collection unmistakably charts a path forward for the Mississippi blues of a modern South.

Melbourne duo Skydeck return with new single ‘Dogshot’; announce sophomore album Coupon

by the partae May 22, 2021
written by the partae

PEOPLE SAY:

“[Eureka Moment] is one of the best Australian albums so far this year… The songs waver between prickly post-punk, washed-out New Wave and lo-fi outsider pop, courting kindred spirits in melodically enhanced weirdos old (Tall Dwarfs, The Fall) and new (The Native Cats, U-Bahn).”
– Doug Wallen via Weirdo Wasteland

“Hooks! hooks! hooks!”
– Declan Byrne via triple j

“Tinny pop informed by paranoid post-punk and inspired by the state of Australia today.”
– Shaad D’Souza via VICE

“Intelligent lyrics drift above the grooviest of bass lines, only to be halted by an obscure swirl of fuzz or a distant glitch. Every detail counts.”
– Kylie O’Connell via Deafen County

Naarm/Melbourne-based duo Skydeck (AKA Dominic Kearton and Mitchum Clemens) return with a new song and video titled ‘Dogshot’. The single comes alongside the announcement of the indie outfit’s sophomore album Coupon, set for release on Friday August 27 2021 via Dinosaur City Records, Osborne Again and Kingfisher Bluez digitally and on limited-edition 12” vinyl.

Stream/watch ‘Dogshot’ HERE. Pre-order limited-edition 12″ vinyl HERE.

Featuring wiry synths, snappy electronic drums, an angular bassline and distorted guitars with Kearton’s vocals at the forefront, ‘Dogshot’ (an Australian sports term describing a late tackle or punch when one is distracted/not looking) reflects on exploitation in the gig economy.

“Worker exploitation is nothing new. Every so often it just morphs into a new form. These days, you have to make a pretty concerted effort to avoid relying on the services of the gig economy. It’s a pretty uncomfortable feeling knowing you are helping these companies (Uber et al.) make loads of money by exploiting their workers, commoditising their spare time and offering no form of security or protection back.”  Kearton says of the new track.

Skydeck ‘Dogshot’ Packshot

Accompanying ‘Dogshot’ is a video directed by Melbourne-based artist, Matthew Ware. The video features Ware’s childhood friend jujutsu training, and is a celebration of love and brotherhood.

Skydeck ‘Dogshot’ Video by Matthew Ware

Skydeck is the project of Naarm/Melbourne duo Dominic Kearton and Mitchum Clemens. Taking inspiration from cold, post-punk sounds of the 1980s, the band makes use of FM synthesis and the bright, clean and sometimes artificial sounds it provides, contrasted with distorted guitars and upbeat basslines.

Coupon is the follow-up to Skydeck’s Australian Music Prize-nominated debut Eureka Moment (2019), which saw praise and plays from the likes of VICE, triple j, FBi Radio, Bandcamp, The Music and Savage Thrills, and caught the attention of Spotify’s editorial team, with adds to a string of influential playlists.

While Eureka Moment was pieced together bit by bit, with lyrics applied to old unfinished demos years later – and gestured towards an anticapitalist sentiment, Coupon sees the band writing and recording in unison – this time, less focused on observing society’s issues from afar, rather reflecting on their own involvement within them.

Though writing and recording at the same time, founding members and long-time friends Mitchum Clemens and Dominic Kearton were physically separated throughout the entire process: one in Mexico and the other back home in Australia.

Coupon was as much an artistic endeavour as it was a way to stay connected with each other over long distances, with songs and ideas acting like letters back and forth. Evidence of this can be heard through field recordings and phone memos scattered throughout songs.

Coupon is set for release digitally and on limited-edition 12” vinyl on Friday August 27 via Dinosaur City Records, Osborne Again and Kingfisher Bluez.

‘Think I’m In Love’ brings the energetic funk stylings of Vantage and fuses them with Todd Edward’s vocal wizardry for one of 2021’s sure fire stand out tracks.

Emerging onto the scene in 2015, Vantage has since cultivated an immersive world at the intersection of sound and technology. With a belief that the music and imagery should do the talking, Vantage has created an engaging visual world to coincide with his music on 2015 album ‘Metro City’ and channeled a sound that has been coined as ‘future funk’, on his distinctive second album ‘J-Funk City’ in 2019. More recently he saw his re-released single, ‘50/50’ becoming a viral hit via TikTok and found an audience on a global scale.

Todd Edwards is a name synonymous with electronic music, with a career spanning over 25 year he’s been widely credited as one of the ‘Godfathers’ of UK Garage. His perhaps most notable works have come in the form of his co-production & vocal credits with global icons, Daft Punk working on tracks ‘Face to Face’ and ‘Fragments of Time’, from the Discovery and Random Access Memories albums respectively, the latter providing him with an ‘Album Of The Year’ GRAMMY. An icon in his own right, Edwards has recently worked with artists such as Groove Armada, Tchami and Majestic, in addition to delivering his debut on Defected Records, ‘You’re Sorry’ charting at #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart.

Joining forces on ‘Think I’m In Love’, the forward-thinking pair deliver a track that is set to be a regular on radio and across dancefloors globally. Packed with a funky bassline and disco cowbells, ‘Think I’m In Love’ drives home the signature sound of Vantage and reinforces the undeniable influence of Todd Edwards impact on the worldwide music scene.

ANOTHER RHYTHM  / THREE SIX ZERO RECORDINGS
TIBASKO – ‘THE ONE’
OUT NOW
Over the last three years, London duo Ken Petalcorin and Andy Bowden, better known collectively as TIBASKO, have been creating heat with an appetite for their productions and a deal of attention coming from the likes of Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Jaguar, Ben Malone and more.

As they continue on their inspiring trajectory, the young pair drop new single, ‘The One’ out today. Released via Another Rhythm in partnership with Three Six Zero Recordings, the powerful euphoric track is an exercise in tension arguably beyond their years, and affirms TIBASKO as one of 2021’s breakout artists to watch.

The pair’s effortlessly indulgent production quality on “The One” forges an ambitious sense of scale; a reminder that their output is also aimed above and beyond the dancefloors, with the biggest festival crowds and global airwaves in sight.

With both Ken and Andy holding strong musical backgrounds and impressive global travels, TIBASKO is a unity of their musical colour; one that spans breakbeat, trance, melodic house and more rich techno sounds.

Bold in structure and tone, ‘The One’ elicits ultimate effervescence to a growing audience of fans; sculptured amongst psychedelic future-trance sounds and a fulfilling vocal hook.

“This track started from one synth Novation sound that we accidentally stumbled on and plays into the emotions and nostalgic memories of watching those festival mainstages to feel-good car rides with mates. We wanted to create a track that could be shared and loved by all.”
TIBASKO
TIBASKO have plays at a number of key parties under their belt already. From Percolate, Wonderland Brighton for Pride, Tobacco Dock, ADE and El Dorado their productions have also seen a wide range of support with their music championed by the likes of Denis Sulta, The Blessed Madonna, Pete Tong, John Digweed, Franky Wah, Hammer, TSHA, and many more… This purveyance of their authenticity has led them to be named in ‘The Hot List’ of acts on BBC Introducing in 2019 & 2020, to reaching number 3 in Kiss FM’s ‘One To Watch 2020’ list.

Now named as Radio 1 Pete Tong’s Future Stars for 2021, TIBASKO’s future is reassuringly vibrant and with no signs of slowing down, ‘The One’ is their most ample statement yet.

GHEIST Release Second Single From Forthcoming Debut LP; ‘Zukunft’ Breaks-Driven‘You’ Moves GHEIST Into New Territory Away From Sample Culture And Repetition

Radau Music
GHEIST – ‘You’
Release Date: Out Now
Following on from their debut album announcement and release of the first single, Berlin based trio GHEIST follow up with second single, ‘You’, out now via their own Radau Music imprint. The latest single, gives a further glimpse into what to expect from the forthcoming ‘Zukunft’ LP and comes packed with bold breaks and modulated synth lines.
Holding a long affinity with song writing, composition and melody, GHEIST have refined and cultivated their process of crafting powerful electronic music from behind a piano and microphone over a number of years, each song painstakingly created with individual care and attention and no song the same.
Emerging from the shadow of previous single ‘We Are Not Alone’, ‘You’ consolidates their influences and redefines their target audience, being suitable for both packed club experiences and home listening environments during life’s more intimate moments. Modulating synths taking centre stage and ineffably eathereal vocals echo across the breaks of the track, whilst being tied down by lush melodies all created by GHEIST in their Berlin based studio.
As with all GHEIST tracks, emotion plays a key role in the development of the single and continues the trend of injecting personal and singular moments into their songcraft.
“The idea of ‘You’ came upon a morning run, when the River Spree in Berlin mirrored a lonely runner in the water, and I realised it was ‘You’” – GHEIST
With debut LP ‘Zukunft’ on the horizon and the reopening of the world’s clubs close, GHEIST take on the next twelve months with cautious optimism. The debut album has been in development since the inception of GHEIST and something that they’ve constantly strived towards, a project which allows themselves a space to fully explore themselves as artists. Developing the album over the last 12 months, through the lockdowns they carefully found the right approach; an LP that one side holds tracks that are designed to enthral dancefloors but on the other side are as comfortable for home listening.
GHEIST’s ‘You’ is available now via Radau Music.

Don Diablo and Denzel Chain – aka Camp Kubrick – are back with another retro release in the form of ‘Borderline’ – out now via HEXAGON.

Adopting a slower pace for their fourth single, ‘Borderline’ takes the form of a more mature, stripped back ballad, whilst still taking listeners on a sonic journey back to the past.

United by their love of the 80s and the movies, shows and music from the era, over the course of one studio session, Don Diablo and Denzel Chain’s evolved from a one-off single into a full-scale collaborative project in the form of Camp Kubrick. Now dropping releases on an almost monthly basis, Camp Kubrick are the band to watch this year.

Sam Blacky Transports You to “Paradise” on New Vocal House Single. Out Now on Stabby Records

by the partae May 22, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: Sam Blacky
Title: Paradise
Label: Stabby Records

Download / Stream

Sam Blacky is back with her new single “Paradise,” an appropriately titled house gem that evokes images of places like the sun-soaked Ibiza and Mykonos. The track features ethereal vocals by Florida-based singer/songwriter Madeline Austin; the two connected via social media and hit it off when Madeline sent demos for what is now “Paradise.” Sam works in a deep, groovy bassline with gently undulating melodies, making for a sultry dancefloor track that will heat up the night wherever you may be. “Paradise” is the third single to come out on Blacky‘s own Stabby Records, which launched in February this year.

“‘Paradise‘ is a more melodic track that I feel people can enjoy in different environments; listen to it while driving, use as a morning soundtrack after waking up, or dance to it in a club. I wanted to make it more universal than just a club banger. Once again, I pulled inspiration from all the beautiful places I have been to, and ‘Paradise‘ feels like summer in Ibiza or Mykonos. It’s the feeling of butterflies in your stomach, floating through the ocean with the wind on your face and a big carefree smile coming from within. Featured on ‘Paradise‘ is singer/songwriter Madeline Austin. When I look for a female vocalist, I post on social media about it because I want to find someone fresh, new, unknown to give them a shot and keep the female movement going. Madi sent me a message and some demos, and the rest is history. She started as a fan, and I soon realized that she is a very talented singer and songwriter. Her vocals and lyrics about paradise, heaven, and a little flirty danger were just perfect for this release.” – Sam Blacky

Samantha Black is a multitalented DJ/producer, model, and influencer professionally known as Sam Blacky. Originally from San Diego, Sam spent several years in Australia, where she first fell in love with producing music and performing live. Since moving back to Los Angeles, music and performing have taken a front seat in her life. In addition to her hectic modeling schedule, Sam has performed live across the world from 2017 to 2021, from Mexico to Ibiza to Bali, racking up over 120 gigs a year at some of the premier electronic festivals and clubs on the planet. With the global pandemic in 2020, Sam released a series of videos on Youtube called “A New World,” where she streamed live sets from some of her favorite places in Mexico, giving viewers a taste of vacation vibes even while staying safe at home. Before all the music, her modeling portfolio included brands such as Nike, L’Oréal, Galore, Marie Claire, Superdry, Guess, Sports Illustrated, Malibu, and Playboy, giving her a unique creative perspective to all types of cultures and styles to bring to her music. With the launch of Sam Blacky‘s label, Stabby Records, and her first releases, 2021 is set to be a breakout year for Sam as she expands her artistic brand.

TOUR MEMORIES with Manchester Orchestra’s Robert McDowell With their sixth album The Million Masks of God heralding the return of Manchester Orchestra, fans now anticipate their next opportunity to see the beloved U.S. band present the long-anticipated record live. But, you know, we still gotta deal with this pesky pandemic. And while music events are restarting around the world, slowly but surely, we’re still a ways off from seeing bands like Manchester Orchestra touring on a global scale. For guitarist Robert McDowell, the yearning for live performance is real. Below, he shares some memories from tours gone by, and tells us about the venues and locations he can’t wait to get back to. The Fox Theatre, Atlanta We have done a festival for eleven years, I think it’s eleven years now, in Atlanta called The Stuffing. It started off at Centre Stage and it’s moved to The Tabernacle. We did two years at The Fox Theatre and then we missed the last year because of the pandemic. For me, the Fox Theatre was a room that I grew up seeing The Nutcracker in, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra...I got Pinkerton taken away from me for trying to listen to it during The Nutcracker!  It’s the historic room in our hometown. We looked into trying to do a limited capacity gig or a livestreamed thing, but we were unable to. Our hope is that we can, this November, do a version of The Stuffing there, as long as it’s safe for everyone. That venue, to me, just represents a full circle gratitude of “Man I hated this room for the wrong reasons,” I loved seeing My Morning Jacket there, Bob Dylan played there, I saw all these great acts there...to be able to be on that stage and have my family there, is a very, very special moment.  I would say that was my biggest miss of 2020, that we weren’t able to do a third year there. Stubb’s, Austin I would love to return to Stubb’s in Austin, Texas. I remember the first time we played there in March of 2006, my dad flew down...for the rest of the family it didn’t mean anything, but to music lovers, that venue is a special place. We’d opened up there God knows how many times and then once we finally got to a place where we could finally headline it, it was such an experience.  We don’t really eat past 4pm because we have nerves and we don’t wanna be sluggish on stage, but it’s a great venue in that the food isn’t pizza or something waiting backstage - it’s BBQ.  Shepherd’s Bush, London There’s a venue in London called Shepherd’s Bush, that we’ve played twice now. Even in the dressing rooms, the history of it...it’s where the Rolling Stones rehearsed for all of these epic things, it has the history of the bombings that went on around it.  The sound and the way it’s tiered, the interaction with the crowd in the room...I had one of my favourite live moments ever there. We were playing ‘Dear’, the opening track off Simple Math, and there’s a line that says, “Dear everybody who has ever paid to see my band,” and the cheer that we got made five grown men cry on stage. It’s not a cool look, but it’s still burnt into my brain. Those are the moments that I will remember and hopefully tell my grandkids about. It’s a very humbling and special room. Australia, the whole country! The first time we ever came over to Australia, I remember it was Laneway Festival 2007. It started in Adelaide and I remember landing there, jetlagged and a child, basically. Walking up to this festival...I didn’t know what a laneway was, it’s not a term we use in the States. Trying to get into the festival that we were supposed to play and couldn’t really, we finally just talked to enough people and started to walk in.  It was Clap Your Hands Say Yeah playing, Broken Social Scene, Feist...just the energy that the Australian music scene has, specifically with festivals, some of my greatest festival memories are in Australia. I miss that aspect of going to a place that’s similar enough but also different, and also on the other side of the world! You get to share moments with people through energy and music; you may not see them again, but you always uniquely have that moment together. For me, it was my first time in Australia, so at the time I knew of Sydney - I didn’t know of the booming music scene in Melbourne, I didn’t know of all the different dynamics of Australia. Adelaide was such a warm and welcoming introduction to the country. It’s fucking bonkers! I loved it. I had such a fun time. It was a wild festival too because bands like Broken Social Scene, Feist, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, those bands were stars, they were so well established and we were so little. In the States or in Canada, it would have been a different scenario but because we were all in Australia together, it was like we were all one big family. It was like a wonderful summer camp.  The Million Masks of God is out now.

“Manchester Orchestra’s new album is their most confounding and thrilling work yet, with the most grandiose narrative concepts, production, and arrangements of their career.”

“Manchester Orchestra forge a newly lush, cinematic sound, unraveling detailed tales of characters with abstractly personal references.”
Altpress

“A Black Mile To The Surface feels richly nuanced, offering up something new on every repeat listen.”
The Line Of Best Fit

“By consciously interrogating everything they do, they’ve created something that doesn’t need a condescending suffix to justify its existence. It’s a new high-water mark for the band, and one well worth the pain to reach.”

Today, 18-year-old Indonesian rapper, singer and producer Warren Hue releases his new track ‘Too Many Tears‘ via 88rising. The self-reflective and sonically ambitious single kicks off the next era for 88rising as the lead single for the highly anticipated Head in the Clouds 3 collaboration album. Listen to ‘Too Many Tears’ HERE.

Produced by Jacob Ray, the off-kilter percussion and haunting yet hard-hitting production perfectly compliments Warren’s heartfelt vocals with the accompanying music video directed by James Defina (Post Malone, Joji, Future, Rich Brian). Watch HERE.

On the release Warren shares: “Too Many Tears is an emotional song that reflects on the dreams that I have. It covers the reality of chasing dreams and how people can treat you along the way. The unique production and beat structure from Jacob Ray adds an experimental feel to the song, which inspired me in the creative process.”

Head In The Clouds 3 is the next installment of the iconic album series featuring 88rising artists and special guests from East to West. After a brief hiatus in 2020, the long-awaited Head In The Clouds 3 builds upon the massive success of 88rising’s world-building first two installments of the Head In The Clouds series, which have amassed over 1.9 billion streams to date.

The Head In The Clouds series included singles such as the RIAA-certified Gold, perennial summer anthem ‘Midsummer Madness‘, US Top 40 radio hit ‘Walking‘, and TikTok viral sensation ‘Indigo‘. Previous editions featured 88rising’s Rich Brian, Joji, Jackson Wang, NIKI, Higher Brothers, Stephanie Poetri, and AUGUST 08 alongside unprecedented global collaborations with Swae Lee (of Rae Sremmurd), Major Lazer, GoldLink, Playboi Carti, CHUNG HA, Phum Viphurit, and many more.

The release is accompanied by the launch of TOOMANYTEARS.AI, where 88rising and Microsoft are partnering to develop an audio-visual experience using AI to analyse video of the skyline of the San Gabriel Valley and remix stems from the track. The groundbreaking experience is Microsoft’s third iteration into an AI-empowered music project, following Sister City installations featuring artists Björk and Julianna Barwick. TOOMANYTEARS.AI celebrates the dynamic San Gabriel Valley – one of the most ethnically diverse regions in the United States and the home to a burgeoning Asian-American population and culture. The Microsoft AI technology focuses on times of the day, allowing for longer, more contemplative loops of music which suits the more pastoral landscape the camera is focused on for this continuous remix. The listening environment is now the audience’s own devices. Working with electronic music, we have been able to explore how AI can influence the track in ways a traditional session producer might. See the TOOMANYTEARS.AI launch HERE.

Previously, Hue released his high-energy hip-hop/electronic infused track ‘Charged!‘ in partnership with Samsung. As part of a massive global promotional campaign for the new Galaxy A phone, Hue was included prominently throughout social messaging on Samsung’s Instagram and TikTok accounts. Samsung also gave fans a first look at exclusive BTS footage behind the making of the track. Using the community driven power of TikTok, Samsung and 88rising used Warren Hue’s ‘Charged!‘ to cultivate endless creativity that’s accessible to all. See the TikTok posts HERE.

Earlier this year Hue emerged with his debut release with the pioneering Asian music collective 88rising, ‘omomo punk‘. Upon release the track was playlisted on Spotify’s New Music Friday in 13 countries including the US, Indonesia and more. Additional playlisting includes Apple Music New Music Daily in 11 markets, Fresh Waves and New This Week. To date, the track and video have been streamed and viewed nearly 2 million times worldwide. Listen + watch ‘omomo punk’ HERE.

Kojaque previews debut album with new track, ‘Wickid Tongues’

PRAISE FOR KOJAQUE

“Hints of Odd Future and its offspring…Kojaque is not your average rapper”
i-D

“Dublin’s hip-hop community are making waves right now…an intimate introduction to the world this bold artist inhabits”
Clash

“Social realist rhymes set to silky hip-hop”
NME

“Likeable and funny”
Trench

“The Dublin MC forcing us to face real life; both the gory and the glory”
Wonderland

“Ireland’s freshest hip-hop hope, Kojaque, serves “soft hip hop” with a side order of poetry and performance art”
Notion

Kojaque further previews his much-anticipated debut album Town’s Dead today with brand new track ‘Wickid Tongues’. The album will be released on Different Recordings on June 25, with the visceral title track (and incredible video) recently released to widespread acclaim, following early singles ‘Shmelly’ (as debuted on COLORS) and the moving ‘No Hands’.

Town’s Dead is Kojaque’s follow-up to debut mixtape Deli Daydreams, a concept piece which became the first release of its kind to be nominated for the prestigious Choice Music Prize and took Kojaque everywhere from tours with slowthai and Lana Del Rey to a Boiler Room documentary on the influence of his label and collective Soft Boy. Its latest chapter, ‘Wickid Tongues’, emerged from a night out and freestyle with Biig Piig in London, adding an extra dimension (and emotional rawness) to the chaotic love triangle at the heart of the track…

‘Wickid Tongues’ – says Kojaque – is about “falling too deeply in love with someone a little too fast, and how that can play with your head and make you paranoid. It can be quite hard to build trust early on in any relationship, if you’re not careful I feel it’s easy for your thoughts to run away with you and you become suspicious when there might not be anything wrong.”

Released this June, Kojaque’s debut album, Town’s Dead, is an expansive and urgent tour-de-force that speeds headlong into sex, violence, depression, and the claustrophobia of your hometown. In this landmark project, Kojaque documents the tumultuous love triangle on the tip of ‘Wickid Tongues’ as it unfolds across New Year’s Eve, with results that are as cinematic as they are deeply personal. Dark corners of parks, bedrooms, clubs, streets, and psyches are excavated, and pouring over the rubble is an artist unafraid of the vulnerabilities that are exposed when the voice rings true, because there’s just no point in being anything else. Through breakups and breakdowns, ‘Town’s Dead’ teeters on the brink, spilling from the mind of a singular talent onto streets scaffolded by a broken system but still suffused with love.

Town’s Dead sees Kojaque build a distinct world and invite the listener inside it – and it’s one in which music, film, humour and at times visceral storytelling all go hand in hand. Few contemporary rappers, after all, can claim to be an award-winning film-maker (for his ‘Love In Technicolor’ film), have been invited to talk at Trinity College’s Philosophical Society, or develop work in residence for the RHA Gallery.  Kojaque is part of a new wave of Irish artists making the world sit-up with blistering and sophisticated art – ideas and work that emerged from a social revolution, stonewalled by late-stage capitalism. Welcome to Town’s Dead, where it is – despite everything – New Year’s Eve, the countdown to midnight is on, and Betty’s fella’s got a gun…

Praise for Mdou Moctar

“The Tuareg guitarist and his bandmates deliver the fullest picture of his gifts yet.”
–
 Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“Moctar’s guitar is a tangled, twisted, blazing beam of light cutting across a black sky.”
–
Rolling Stone

“Searing and soulful” – CLASH

“This is a group that is deeply zoned into one another’s nervous systems, grooving hard, moving as one.” – Aquarium Drunkard

“Afrique Victime, Moctar’s first album for Matador, seems poised to attract his largest audience yet” – Bandcamp

“scarcely has a Fender Stratocaster sounded more alive than in his hands… a propulsive, psychedelic sound that is at once delivered with the cathartic oomph of celebration and the urgent cadence of protest” – Guitar World

“As it becomes safe to go out again, seeing these songs live should be as early a priority as is reasonable.” – Under the Radar

“His electric guitar leaps up from the band’s rhythmic core to trill, twirl, swoop and

scream” – New York Times

“The world’s most uniquely thrilling guitarist” – Dazed & Confused

“Afrique Victime finds Moctar and his band in the studio delivering the raw power of their intense and transcendent live performances.” – Reverb

Today, Mdou Moctar’s sixth album and Matador Records debut, Afrique Victime, finally hits down.

Recorded across four studios and two continents, the album has already drawn universal praise as a powerful rallying call – a melding of guitar pyrotechnics and full-blast noise with poetic meditations on love, inequality, and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers.

Read Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” review of Afrique Victime HERE and Rolling Stone’s profile of Mdou HERE.

Alongside the album release comes the video for the hypnotic song ‘Taliat’. “Oh poor girl / She gave him her heart and he broke it / I pray to God to never experience unrequited love and the pain of a broken heart” Moctar sings in Tamasheq over lyrical electric guitar runs and ecstatic rhythm. “Taliat means woman,” Moctar says. “In our community, women are queens, they have a lot of power, that why I use the term taliat to talk about them. A woman in the Tuareg community has to be protected, but she also has to be treated as equal.”

Moctar hails from Agadez, a desert village in rural Niger. Inspired by traditional Tuareg melodies and YouTube videos of Eddie Van Halen’s six string techniques, he mastered the guitar and created his own burning style. The word and the sound travelled across West Africa via mobile phone data cards, a popular form of local music distribution. Grueling DIY world tours and albums on the independent US label Sahel Sounds followed, including 2019’s landmark Ilana: The Creator, which earned Mdou an ecstatic international audience.

Afrique Victime is a result of the combined efforts of Mdou and the members of the band that shares his name: rhythm guitarist and longstanding collaborator Ahmoudou Madassane, who helped form the revolutionary first woman-fronted Tuareg guitar band Les Filles De Illighadad; drummer Souleymane Ibrahim, also a member of both the well-known Niger band, Sultanat Star De L’air and the longest-running wedding band in Agadez; and producer and bassist Mikey Coltun who over the past three years has played over 500 shows on three continents as Mdou Moctar’s bassist, road manager, producer/recording engineer, and friend. Coltun recorded and produced Afrique Victime around the band’s travels in 2019 – working in studios, apartments, hotel rooms, venue backstages, and in field recordings in Niger.

The music listeners are the beneficiaries of the staggeringly powerful do-it-yourself musical ethic of Mdou Moctar – the man and the band – who’ve worked so hard to bring the spirits of families and communities in Niger to the West. Afrique Victime sounds and feels like a Tuareg hand reaching down from the sky, and we are very lucky for this chance to get lifted.

SECOND IDOL REVEAL AUTHENTIC DEBUT EP ‘DEFENCE MECHANISMS’

SUPPORT FOR TRACKS OFF ‘DEFENCE MECHANISMS’

“There’s something about this that makes me want to just push that little bit harder against the patriarchy.” – 4/5 stars
Bridie Tanner – triple j Unearthed (AUS)

“Charged bursts of captivating alt-rock-meets-punk-pop that sits in-line with long-time influences from Sonic Youth and Savages.”
Pilerats (AUS)

‘White Noise’ music video added to rotation on ABC’s Rage

‘Out Of Time’ premiered on triple j Unearthed TOPS Program

Sydney based alternative-rock quartet Second Idol have revealed their earnest debut EP ‘Defence Mechanisms’ – produced, mixed and mastered by Nick Franklin (Peking Duk, Polish Club, CLEWS).

‘Defence Mechanisms’ is five tracks of reflective and dynamic alternative rock, all-inclusive with arduous melodies, sincere lyricism and compelling instrumentation that strengthens the group’s notoriety and defines their prominent sound.

Lead singer Kate Olivia talks about the process behind ‘Defence Mechanisms’:

“This record is about resilience and strength, vulnerability and authenticity, self-worth and self-determination. The growing of armour. ‘Defence Mechanisms’ explores concepts of power and control, ambition and listlessness, political frustration, queerness and gender, all fuelled with a relentless vengeance.”

EP opener and lead single ‘White Noise’ introduces vitality with a comprehensive mix of ominous guitars and resolute drums, mesmerising the listener in a sweeping movement of powerful vigour. Track two, ‘Out Of Time’, commences with ethereal riffs and a resonant rhythm section, combining for an enthralling chorus that takes cues from the band’s 90’s influences. Bending the rubrics of harmonic expression, the track’s broad form thrusts the listener into a captivating finale.

Introducing track three, ‘Tired Eyes’, is a steady fusion of polyphony that heaves into an arena-sized chorus, layered with richly distorted guitars and reverberated vocals, while a resounding nostalgic melody soars above the arrangement, fulfilling its impassioned atmosphere. Track four, ‘Low Tides’, substitutes energy for intimacy, as the tempo and vulnerable production emphasis the authenticity behind Second Idol’s song writing.

Finally, ‘The Way It Is’ caps off the EP with a familiarising mixture of candidness and insolence, conveyed through clean and fuzzy guitars, sturdy drums and fervent vocals. It summarises a thoughtful and pensive body of work, shining a light on the trio’s diversity and liberation through their dynamical aptitudes and the EP’s subject matter.

Lead single ‘White Noise’ was widely embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, The Faction, Edge Radio, 2SER, 2XX FM, RTR FM, 4ZZZ, SYN FM and WXRY Unsigned (USA). The band have also seen immense online praise from Pilerats, Milky, Out Now Magazine (IRL), The Underground Stage, Australian Music Scene, Temporary Dreamer, Something You Said, AAA Backstage and The Music.

Scott Klein Releases ‘SUNSHINE’

by the partae May 20, 2021
written by the partae
Especially dreamy with precise mysticism, Klein’s next single “Sunshine” is a sentimental dance in the middle of the night, that cries out a collage of images transcending people to the depths of their imagination. The rhythmic guitar notes are a folky parallel to the haunting lyrics that channel a type of moaning over top of the emptiness of the Canadian prairies.

This Donovan / Cream tinged jam riffs out in the British California of our minds where it’s always sunny yet somewhat dark. The song’s style twangs like a whistle in the distance on a runaway train; a call and answer of thick western sound. Written for an ex-lover on the plains of Saskatchewan, “Sunshine” features four time Juno winner and former guitarist of the sheepdogs Leot Hanson on lead guitar especially during the middle 8, along side skull creek producer Aspen Beveridge, completing this small town imagination.

Scott Klein

Where are you currently based?

Saskatchewan Canada

How did you first start playing music?

I got this old nylon string guitar when I was 19 and wrote my first song shortly after, It was no good probably but real, I remember it being about a good friend.

What’s been happening recently?

I am recording a new album for the fall it’s about half way right now.

Your new single ‘Sunshine’ is out on May 20, 2021, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I think on this track I had that heavy 1965 British folk rock thing in the back of my mind, where the concepts are a bit  dark, but sung with a more light spin. This song is about an ex-lover that had passed away suddenly, but I had not found out until years later when I had returned back to Swift Current, SK Canada after being gone for a long while. Expecting her to be there but she wasn’t.

How did you go about writing Sunshine?

I brought this song to the producer that I was recording with at the time. I had just written the song days before, I’m not sure why I didn’t pick one of the other songs I had wrote in the past, but I had just cut the a song from the record and this one seemed right.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

This toon was Recorded in Saskatoon SK, Canada about a year ago, at Skull Creek Studios. Aspen Beveridge and I produced, mixed and recorded this track, with help from Leot Hanson. Mastering done by Harry Hess from Toronto ON  March 20th 2021.

What programs/equipment did you use?

The gear that we used was an old acoustic guitar plugged directly into a fender twin reverb. Aspen played a tremolo pedal which you hear in the beginning of the song. Leot through down some killer dark lead licks in the middle 8 using his 62 fender bassman and broken reverb pedal.

How did you approach the recording process?

We approached it a bit unconventional for sure, but we had a few demos of the track already so we knew where it was headed, but we all just let go and had fun really.

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m not sure I fully achieve getting away from music, but I do enjoy art, however I always have this feed back loop to music or songwriting.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I’m listening to People like Guy Clark, Donovan, Karen Dalton, Hasil Adkins, Towns Van Zanbt, The Velvet Underground and Skip James.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

Release the full EP in a month and finish recording my album but end of summer, and tour this fall.

Favorite food and place to hangout?

Pizza and a blues bar.

Off Night

by the partae May 20, 2021
written by the partae

Hey guys, great to chat to you. How are things in your world?

Hey, our world is full of love and music. All good 😉

Can you tell us how you met and came to work with each other?

We first met about 6 years ago and for a long time we were both residents of one of the clubs in Kiev.

We were playing a lot together and therefore, we decided to combine our efforts and created a project OFF NIGHT.
How would you describe your sound? Is there anything that really influences your productions?

Its a spicy mix between indie dance and melodic house, for sure, with a big influence of 80s.

How are things in Ukraine at the moment? Does it look like there will be a return to clubs & festivals any time soon?

We are slowly back to normal life and normal night life. We see light at the end of the tunnel and expect this summer to be massive.

If you could play anywhere in the world for your first gig back, where would it be?

We have amazing gig on 4th of June, playing with Keinemusik team – Rampa, Adam Port, &Me. We couldn’t imagine a better opening of the season.

Tell us about your debut EP ‘Suspended In Air’. How did the collaboration with the legendary Robert Owens come about?

Robert is a true legend and the “voice of house music”. It was always a dream to work with him, since we just started listening to house music. So we created a demo with his vocal cuts, sent him to check. He liked it and agreed to make a collab with us and wrote original lyrics for this single.

Who did what – did you each have a set role on the track or did you collaborate on everything?

We work together all the time, but Oleg is more responsible for the groove elements and Maxim is for melodic parts and mixing.

Sascha Braemer and Oliver Schories remixed your track, it must be pretty inspiring to have two big names already remixing your first record?

Yes, amazing that it happened and big thanks to Sascha and Oliver that took this risk to believe in us and remix first single of a new project.

Has it been weird writing music without any clubs open? Has that affected your sound?
Not at all. We were DJing for many years before we even met, so we know what works on the floor and what makes people dance. The pandemic just gave us more freedom and time to make music.
What’s next for you, are you working on any more projects that you can tell us about?

For next release we have collab with Canadian vocalist Elly Ball. It’s a very sexy tune, so we are looking forward to it!
