PRAISE FOR YOUR HERO IS NOT DEAD

“The British songwriter’s excellent debut mines the gentle and detailed sounds of soft rock’s past, while his lucid yet uncomplicated lyrics interrogate the uncertainty of the present”
Pitchfork (8/10)

“Softly powerful alt-pop that feels like a warm hug”
The Guardian Guide“a wonderful, complex thing – quite easily one of the year’s most impressive and textured records”.
NME

“One of the year’s most beautiful albums”
Dazed

Today, Westerman shares a remix of ‘Drawbridge‘ from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It transforms the song from a playful acoustic introduction into highly-charged, reverb-soaked psychedelia. Listen HERE.

‘Drawbridge‘ is the opener from Westerman’s debut album Your Hero Is Not Dead which came out in June last year on Play It Again Sam and Partisan in the US.

This follows the news that Westerman contributed a rework to Perfume Genius’ Immediately remix album which is set for release on Feb 19. The release includes remixes of every song on Perfume Genius’ recent album Set my Heart On Fire and as well as Westerman includes works from Actress, A.G. Cook, Jenny Hval, Nídia, Planningtorock, and more.

Westerman was asked to curate his Morning After Mix for BBC 6 music which aired over the weekend  and included picks from Amen Dunes, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, and Kurt Vile.

Your Hero Is Not Dead is a graceful and self-reflective debut album that continues Westerman’s journey from pop maverick to one of the most vital voices coming out of the UK. The project includes previously released singles, ‘The Line’, the original ‘Your Hero Is Not Dead‘, ‘Waiting on Design‘, ‘Think I’ll Stay‘ and ‘Blue Comanche‘ and is the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Ark EP.

Towards the end of last year, he also released Choupana, a collection of early sketches from Your Hero Is Not Dead that includes the early workings of a song that was not included on the final album, ‘Above Average’, and initial versions of some of the standout tracks from the project – ‘Blue Comanche’, ‘The Line’, and ‘Think I’ll Stay’.

Find further details on his debut album Your Hero Is Not Dead, including tracklisting and cover art by renowned New York via Portugal Graphic Designer Bráulio Amado below as well as on his website westerman.world.

ARIA Award Winner Illy added to THIS THAT lineup. Festival expands with final release on sale now

by the partae February 9, 2021
written by the partae

To fill ‘the space between’ now and THIS THAT, the festival team have a bunch of exciting announcements. The first? The exciting addition of ARIA award-winning rapper Illy to the already stacked line up across both locations and a final release of tickets across both locations.

The rapper has been making waves recently with his triple j feature album, The Space Between topping the ARIA charts. Also landing in the 2020 triple j Hottest 100 at #95 with ‘Loose Ends ft. G Flip’, Illy’s popularity is as powerful on stage as it is off stage. He’s set to bring his A-game to both the Newcastle and Sandstone Point editions of the festival this October and November.

Staying true to THIS THAT’s respected brand of party starter lineups, the day will be packed to the brim with the nation’s favourite electronic, hip hop, pop and rock artists. Still making their way to both Sandstone Point (QLD) and Newcastle (NSW) are Hayden James, Crooked Colours, Dune Rats plus Mallrat and The Presets (QLD only).

With the new dates locked in and ready to roll this October and November, there are more exciting announcements lurking and ready to be revealed in the lead-up. Previously sold out, today the team release a very limited allocation of additional tickets for Newcastle with Sandstone Point still on sale and almost at capacity as well. Sadly ChillinIt and Enschway are no longer able to make the new dates announced last month, however the rest of the line up remains exactly the same with the addition of Illy and more to be announced.

EMERSON SNOWE RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ WITH VIDEO + NEW EP DUE THIS YEAR + SIGNS TO BERLIN-BASED LABEL DUCHESS BOX FOR EUROPE

by the partae February 9, 2021
written by the partae
Emerson Snowe today shares his melodic new single ‘Frankenstein’ with fans; the first taste of his forthcoming EP due later this year. News of the song comes hand in hand with a signing to Berlin-based indie label Duchess Box Records for European territories, with the track out via Liberation Records for the rest of the world.
“Frankenstein was the last track written in this soon to be released collection of songs. I wrote it in 30 minutes after a friend listened to a batch of my music and said that it had given them life.”
Premiered by Declan Byrne on triple j and Under The Radar Magazine, the self-produced song was mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (War On Drugs, Spoon, Deerhunter, Animal Collective) and is a deceptively harmonious number full of joyous horns and jangly guitars. The upbeat sonics mask a dark lyrical tone and a self-conscious sentiment. Opening with the honest line ‘Well, I felt as though I wasnʼt right in my head”, and as the singer-songwriter later chants, “Iʼve been trying to outrun everything – Iʼve been around”, the dark sense of self-actualisation within ‘Frankenstein’ becomes evident.

“I had become lost with myself and who I thought I was meant to be. Once people in your life fall away and you’re left with yourself, you can be as self-aware as you want to be – but you’re gonna realise sooner or later you have no clue who you are.

“I had moved from one addiction onto another. This track, although it was written very fast, holds a lot of weight into who I was at that time. A time of self-isolation, not sleeping until midday the next day, and gripping onto any ego I thought I had at all.”

WATCH
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOflfVxVXh8
The song has been brought to life with spooky, cut-out animation from LA creative Joe Sams. The off-beat visuals intensify the song’s message with Emerson Snowe represented as ‘Frankenstein’, a skeleton who hides himself in makeshift flesh and skin. The pair’s serendipitous meeting adds to the allure.
“I was invited to a release party in the Hollywood Hills in LA. Later on in the evening a dude arrived holding two life sized hand-made puppets – similar to the muppets from Sesame Street. I watched him place them down in chairs in the dining room, he placed a beer into one of the puppets hands and closed it shut. Whoever this cat was I knew I wanted to do something with him.
“His name was Joe and his animations and mind is not only the most sincere portrayal of an artist I had seen in a long time, but is inspirational and built on pure love for a craft. Later on, he told me that he had folders and scrapbooks full of disembodied corpses and really grotesque images that he wasn’t able to use in any of his previous projects. I’m so grateful to have met him and have something to show of this period in both of our lives.”
‘Frankenstein’ follows the release of Emerson Snowe’s debut EP, That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. Singles off the EP saw unwavering support from Matt Wilkinson at Beats 1 and BBC Radio 1. From Brisbane originally, Emerson Snowe has toured with King Krule and GUM, and spent the last few years overseas, immersing himself into wider music, fashion and creative circles. He performed debut shows in Tokyo and LA whilst working on music in both areas and also appeared at SXSW and The Great Escape. Currently based in Germany, he walked the runway at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris 2020 for Geoffery B Small and is now represented in the region. He has continued to dance further in the fashion landscape globally, with coveted labels Gucci and Fendi also utilising his music in recent campaigns.‘Frankenstein’ is the beginning of the next passage in this exciting artist’s growing story.

MEADOW RETURNS WITH 2021 FESTIVAL REVAMP ANNOUNCING KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD, ANGIE McMAHON AND MORE FOR THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED WEEKEND THIS APRIL!

by the partae February 9, 2021
written by the partae

The time has finally come. Welcome, Meadow 2021.

The acclaimed regional Victorian multi-day event is returning to the rolling Bambra hills over the ANZAC long weekend to take two on their anticipated seventh instalment. Announcing 2021 festival headliners: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Angie McMahon, who will lead an all-Australian lineup of beloved acts traversing all corners of the music landscape. From Friday 23 – Sunday 25 April, catch Meadow’s 2020-penned artists: Close Counters, Surprise Chef, Elizabeth, Cool Sounds, 3K, Sweet Whirl, Darcy Justice and Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys, alongside 2021 additions: HTRK, Mimi Gilbert, Romero and Emma Volard for three days and two nights of aural exploration and collective celebration at the iconic Bambra Bowl.

After cancelling their mammoth 2020 European and US run of dates, Melbourne psych stalwarts King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard will take to the Bambra Bowl this April with even more releases ready to craftily deploy from their expansive, genre-spanning catalogue over 15 albums strong and counting. 2020’s KG and 2021’s imminent LW see the band returning to their idiosyncratic microtonal ways, bringing in a new era as a newfangled six-piece. Joined by Melbourne’s own new-age raconteur, Angie McMahon, who has made waves the world over since the release of her acclaimed debut album Salt, and recent reimagining Piano Salt, the 2021 Meadow headliners are sure to draw some of the festival’s most devoted and attentive crowds yet.

In parallel to the stellar live showcase, Meadow introduces a Virtual Festival in 2021.
14 artists, 2 sunsets, 2 sunrises, dancing, cocktails, camping and more captured live from the Bambra Bowl. Meadow will partner with Hutch Collective and Baked to beam a dusty Autumn sky, rugged bushland and a once in a year-time musical retreat back to the comfort of your living room providing a level of certainty that’s been missing since last March. You buy a ticket. You can watch the festival from home. Access via the Humanitix Virtual Events Hub. Simple. Professionally produced, presented on-demand over a 3 day period, two weeks after Meadow Music Festival. May 7-9, 2021.

Though the earth’s axis has substantially shifted since the festival’s previous iteration, Meadow promises the same smooth rotation of its own world beyond the trees, with diligent COVIDSafe plans in place to keep everyone spinning safely within its orbit.

This Means:
– Reduced capacity
– Temperature checks and basic COVID screening upon arrival
– Ticketholders grouped into Eastside and Westside with the site split down the middle to reduce crowding and minimise close contacts.
– Three designated ‘viewing zones’ (front, middle and back) in the amphitheatre to maintain social distancing whilst watching the performances
– Assigned coloured wristbands denoting each attendee’s designated ‘viewing zone’

NOTE: ‘viewing zones’ will rotate at the end of each day, and once between Saturday daytime and nighttime, ensuring all festival-goers get the same amazing Meadow affair even in the presence of social distancing and capacity restrictions.

Do not fret, this change in circumstance will not negate the Meadow experience, with standing, sitting, singing, dancing, BYO and good vibes both permitted and encouraged within your designated zone.

A super limited release of tickets are now on sale at $189+BF with teenagers accompanied by adults free to join in the festivities with a valid full-priced ticket, and children under 12 invited to attend for free. All 2020 ticketholders will now have been contacted via email by the Meadow team to reissue their tickets for this year’s event. Car passes will not be required (this year only!) but Meadow is still committed to reducing its environmental impact. Carpooling is strongly encouraged, reusable drink bottles will be given to all punters upon arrival, and the Meadow team have even planted 360 baby trees during our brief hiatus.

Whilst on the topic of improvements, Meadow has also formed a new 2021 ticketing partnership with Humanitix. This means each ticket purchased will contribute valuable funding to support educational scholarships for disadvantaged Indigenous students in Australia.

Just 90-minutes southwest of Melbourne, and nestled between rainforest to the west, the ocean to the south and rolling plains to the north, Meadow is an idyllic spot to gather, reflect and celebrate the end of the year-that-must-not-be-named, welcoming the return of human connection and much needed sonic rejuvenation.

Do not sleep on this one.

KASEY CHAMBERS

TAKES TO MELBOURNE’S SIDNEY MYER MUSIC BOWL ON SUNDAY 14 MARCH
AS PART OF THE LIVE AT THE BOWL CONCERT SERIES

  • Kasey Chambers will return to the stage at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Sunday 14 March for her first solo headline show in over a year
  • Joined by rising country star Brad Cox and Andy Golledge
  • Tickets to Chambers’ highly anticipated show go on sale Thursday 11 February at 12noon AEDT

Chugg Entertainment and Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce the return of renowned singer-songwriter Kasey Chambers, who will take the stage at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Sunday 14 March, for her first solo headline performance in over a year.

Kasey’s performance is part of the Live at the Bowl concert series, which sees Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl host a now four-month-long festival that runs through to the end of April, featuring an all-local program of music, comedy, family-friendly events and more.

The genre-defying Chambers, who wears the honesty of country music on her sleeve, is one of Australia’s greatest international success stories. She’s garnered a cult following around the world with her unique brand of country, and over the past two decades has won 13 ARIA Awards, 10 APRA Music Awards, countless Golden Guitar Awards, and in 2018, became the youngest female to ever be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

With twelve award-winning albums under her belt since the release of her debut solo record The Captain (1999), Chambers’ brilliant song writing and world-class performance has seen her become one of the most popular and acclaimed artists of her generation.

Over the years, Chambers has collaborated and shared stages with the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning and more, with an enthralling live performance that’s as joyful as it is authentic. As the Sydney Morning Herald writes, “… it’s the warmth, sense of community and comfort Chambers exudes that brings her legion of supporters back again and again”.

Opening for Kasey Chambers will be alt-country artist Andy Golledge and joining as main support is rising Australian country music star Brad Cox.

Taking out the 39th Toyota Star Maker award in 2018 and earning himself four Golden Guitar nominations to date, Brad Cox has quickly captured the attention of country music tastemakers around the country. Released in late 2020, Brad’s sophomore album My Mind’s Projection debuted at the top of the ARIA Australian Country Chart and No.12 on the combined ARIA Album Chart, with the artist chalking up more than 20 million streams across his catalogue to date. Known for his epic live performances which have seen him sell out rooms across the country, the Jindabyne native has performed at CMC Rocks QLD with the hottest local and international artists, and supported American country music heavyweights Brett Eldredge, Randy Houser and Jon Pardi.

The joyful mania of an Andy Golledge show must be experienced to be believed. With a catalogue that spans foot stompin’ party starters to the heartachingly delicate, the Tamworth native and his band always put on one hell of a show.

Live at the Bowl is set up in a COVID-Safe, socially distanced format with tickets available in pairs or groups of 4 – 6. Tickets to Kasey Chambers’ performance will go on sale at 12noon AEDT on Thursday 11 February, so start calling around and make plans early. This is the perfect opportunity to get your group of friends or family to go along together and enjoy the show from your own private deck or table.

Live at the Bowl will see the world premiere of the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra with an epic, newly commissioned piece called Magnitudes come to life on Saturday 27 March as part of MESS at the Bowl. The MESS Synthesiser Orchestra brings together an almost impossible array of cutting edge synthesisers – also called synths – spanning from the 1960s to the present day. Performing as one ensemble for Live at the Bowl, this will be one of the largest gatherings of these iconic electronic musical instruments ever seen on stage. Co-founder of the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) Robin Fox says this unique performance event reflects the diversity of sounds from yesterday, today and tomorrow in an ecstatic show of togetherness and community. “The inauguration of the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra signals the beginning of a series of mass activations of the MESS collection at an extraordinary scale. There will be an incredible array of electronic instruments from right across the history of electronic music on stage – some for the first time in many decades. This is a unique and rare opportunity for audiences; we want to show them that electronic music is not just one thing. It is in fact a multiplicity of techniques, approaches and sensibilities which have revolutionised the way in which we listen to and understand sound and music,” says Fox. Audiences will be entranced by Magnitudes – conducted by Mat Watson – a performance event which makes use of 40 synths and 16 performers in the newly formed MESS Synthesiser Orchestra. “Magnitudes moves through tonal, textural, melodic, harmonic, abstract and absurd themes to reveal itself across multiple movements. Expect intense sound phenomena and complete chaos giving way to moments of stillness and feelings of euphoria. I feel incredibly excited about performing this work with such a talented group of artists at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. It’ll be a wild time!” says Watson. MESS at the Bowl will also see a sweeping line-up of local talent performing exciting sonic explorations with sets from Simona Castricum, R. Rebeiro (My Disco/Downwards), Naretha Williams (Blak Mass), OK EG and the legendary sound of Artificial (Nicole Skeltys/B(if)tek), with live visuals by Carla Zimbler. Despite a brutal year of lockdown and isolation, musical talent still runs deep in Melbourne and MESS at the Bowl is the celebration that music lovers and musicians of all kinds have been missing. “One thing is certain. MESS loves them all. MESS is genre agnostic. Sound is sound and everything is available for creative deployment,” says Fox. MESS is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to giving everyone access to the entire history of electronic music in instrumental form. SJUR

by the partae February 8, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Bergen, Norway. I moved here 10 years ago to study and ended up moving here permanently. It’s actually one of the cities in Norway with the most rain. Guess that helps out if you want to sit inside and make music 🙂

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

Oh, where to begin. The past year has been pretty special. I’ve had sessions over Teams and been at home for the most part. Really looking forward to start playing festivals and shows again!

How did you first start playing music?

I started as a DJ just for fun in 2009, and after a couple of years I decided to try out producing. A lot of YouTube tutorials and so on. I still perform as a DJ, but my main focus is producing at the moment.

Lovespeake and yourself have a new single ‘Me In The Middle’ on the way, how did you come to collaborate with Lovespeake?

We first met at a songwriting camp hosted by Sony Music in Oslo. Made a quick demo together and decided to work again later. So, when I heard his draft of “Me In The Middle” I was sold!

What influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

We want the listener to feel energized and listen to the track when they try to achieve a goal. At the gym, studies, work etc. I think this motivation helped us shape the track to how it sounds today. I heard our first demo over and over at the gym and came up with new ideas every time.

How did Lovespeake and yourself create Me In The Middle?

I heard his vocal draft of the song in the end of 2019. We sat a session with Jesper Borgen in Oslo and met up to write new verses and start to set the arrangement. Later we worked over Teams and sent ideas back and forth. We tried to set a couple of sessions in Oslo during the pandemic, but every date we planned landed on a new quarantine, so we finished it with online sessions. Luckily, we had similar ideas for the track, so this didn´t slow us down.

What programs/instruments did you use?

I work in Ableton Live, and on this project I used a lot of Serum and Kontakt for the “future bass”-sound with decapitator/devil-loc to crush the synths a little extra. For the verses and pre-chorus Jesper Borgen played piano/guitar over the synths to get the human feel, and then we fooled around with different recordings of stuff in the studio to make the percussion unique.

How did you approach the recording/production/mastering processes?

We did the vocal recordings at Jesper´s studio in Oslo, and I also presented my first draft of the drop there. After that I continued the production at home and we sent the files to each other. The master is done by Chris Samson at Propeller Mastering in Oslo.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creative process?

The distance is of course the biggest challenge in this situation, and I think the most rewarding is that I learned to do online sessions. Have a few really nice ideas ready.

What do you like to do away from music?

Now that we have a lot of snow here in Norway, I like to spend time skiing in the mountains. It´s one of the few activities we can do and still keep the social distancing.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I´ve been listening to Seeb´s new album lately. It´s so good.

What’s planned for 2021

I do have some festivals planned, but we will have to see how the pandemic goes and hope for the best. Other than that, I´m very excited to release some new music this year!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I love the food at Fly Chicken in Bergen. Fried chicken burger with jalapeno fries. Best there is!

They re-recorded many of those classic movie themes for 2017’s ‘Anthology’ album. The following year, John was asked to executive produce and compose the music for the new Halloween movie directed by David Gordon Green, which promptly became the highest-grossing instalment in the series. The 2018 ‘Halloween’ score gave his music its biggest audience in decades, and the world he releases his new album into is one that has, at long last, given him the credit he deserves as a founding father of modern electronic music.

FEMI KUTI AND MADE KUTI TWO-ALBUM PROJECT LEGACY + OUT NOW!

by the partae February 8, 2021
written by the partae
Praise for ‘Legacy +’:
“Made Kuti is a one-man studio band…[he] merges the slow-simmering rhythm and implacable horn riffs of vintage Afrobeat with a looping, prismatic, multilayered production, doubling back toward psychedelia.” – New York Times“Giddy and transcendent” – Paste“With one listen through ‘Legacy +,’ it’s clear that the late Fela Kuti’s musical family tree remains both strong and fruitful.” – American Songwriter

“A fresh take on the Afrobeat sound that Fela pioneered in the 1970s and ’80s. Made carries the torch for his family’s Black consciousness and activist politics.” – SPIN

“A remarkable collection” – Loud & Quiet (9/10)

“Throws Afrobeat to the future” – The Observer

“The dynasty continues” – Uncut (8/10)

Femi Kuti and his son Made Kuti release Legacy +, a special two-album package that includes solo albums from each artist – Femi’s Stop The Hate and Made’s For(e)ward. The project has earned critical acclaim while Femi and Made proudly carry on Fela Kuti’s legacy as torchbearers for change. To celebrate the release, Femi has shared a music video for Stop The Hate highlight ‘As We Struggle Everyday’ (filmed by Optimus Dammy, edited by Audrey Hurtis, with illustrations by Kiki Picasso). Watch below.

WATCH: ‘As We Struggle Everyday’ by Femi Kuti

Both albums that make up Legacy + are steeped in the tradition of Afrobeat invented by Fela Kuti (Femi’s father, and Made’s grandfather), but each also brings their own unique vision and sound. Stop The Hate honours Fela in a traditionally fun, sharply political, and affirming way. Meanwhile For(e)ward is a modern and progressive freedom manifesto, pushing boundaries of the subgenre even further. Made also performs every instrument on his album!

The cover art for For(e)ward and Stop The Hate features portraits of Femi and Made done by Brooklyn-based artist Delphine Desane, whose work was recently featured on the cover of Vogue Italia.

Femi got his start playing saxophone in his father’s band in 1979, eventually creating his own band, Positive Force. Over the next 30 years, Femi would amass worldwide acclaim as an ambassador of Afrobeat and many humanitarian organizations. Positive Force remains at the forefront of the Afrobeat movement, expanding the music’s vocabulary. Femi has earned multiple Grammy nominations, performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and festivals, and collaborated with iconic musicians across a wide array of genres, most recently Coldplay on their on their latest album Everyday Life.

Made grew up in the legendary New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, and spent much of his childhood touring with his father, playing bass or saxophone in Positive Force. Unlike his father, who didn’t formally study music, Made went to the famed Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London (the same place Fela studied, back when it was known simply as Trinity College), where he shared a musical environment with some of the most talented and disciplined musicians up-and-coming acts from the city’s underground scene.

Bergen native SJUR has been rising through the ranks of Scandinavia’s unbeatable electronic scene over the last few years, and with over 186 million streams under his belt it’s no secret that his music instantly connects. Lovespeake, who is considered the leading topline writer and singer in Norway, recently collaborated with David Guetta’s huge hit ‘Save My Life’.

The song was created on a cold winter’s day in a studio in Oslo last year.

SJUR and Lovespeake started working on the song in fellow producer and songwriter Jesper Borgen’s studio on a cold winter day in Oslo last year.

“For me, this is a very motivating song. It is about being able to achieve your goals and focus enough on yourself in order to achieve these. I have worked with Lovespeake on several sessions before and he is very skilled. And, with Jesper joining us we became a really good team”- SJUR

Hailing from a small town on the west coast of Norway, SJUR can show for great success with over 186 million streams on Spotify, including releases like, What Do I Do and Rich & Famous with Isac Elliot. His cover of “Let Me Love You” by Mario has gained over 100 million streams on Spotify alone, and entered the charts in both Norway, Canada, Finland, Denmark, Holland and Sweden.

After a slightly different year, SJUR is looking forward to 2021 – a year he hopes will be more social, full of gigs and new music.

STREAM / PURCHASE ‘AFSILA’ HERE DESTIINO – ‘AFSILA’ LUMIÈRE NOIRE RECORDS ____________________________________________________________________________________ Announced today, French electronic producer Pierre-Alexandre Busson, better known as Yuksek, reveals the first details of his new alias, Destiino. Sharing the inaugural taster of the project, Destiino’s debut single, ‘Afsila’ is out now via Chloé's Lumière Noire Records. ‘Afsila’ is the first track taken from a soon to be released EP of the same name on February 19th. The origins of the project and Yuksek’s tormented alter-ego of Destiino revert back to 2017, when the Rheims-born electronic producer was invited to take part in a unique experiment - a residence at visual artist Xavier Veilhan’s Studio Venezia. The installation, as part of The 57th Venice Biennale, invited musicians to make use of its instruments in order to compose live in front of an audience.    Inspired by the spontaneity and improvising nature of the experience, Yuksek returned home with a new sonic focus to push the limits of his artistic boundaries, break conventional creative processes and surrender to spontaneity by recording improvised tracks in one sequence on his armada of analogue machines. “Destiino is Yuksek’s alter ego, it came out straight from the synthesizers PCB, without over thinking. It’s the result of lonely recording sessions when I pushed the ‘stop recording button’ when exhausted. It also came out of public recording sessions at Xavier Veilhan exhibition in Venice Biennale. I could hardly describe the style, but I can only say that it’s most of the time one shot recording, nearly no editing, like sur-realist’s automatic writing, like joy in the machine.” - Destiino Embarking on a series of experimental music sessions between Venice and Yuksek’s studio in Rheims, the output very almost didn’t see the light of day. By his own admission, Yuksek didn’t quite know what to make of the unclassifiable tracks, which comprised both of pieces that were too moody for dance-music labels and others that were too club-focused for more experimental imprints. It was with Lumière Noire, a label that defies classification, that the project found an open ear.   Along with label boss Chloé, who shares an equal love and inclination towards shifting away from club formatted sounds and holding a deep appreciation for narrating stories with music, Yuksek created edited versions of his recordings which withhold the desired raw musical feel. As time-progressed and ideas between the two artists were exchanged and flourishing, the Destiino project was born.   Dark atmospheres and frantic melodies conjured by the unmistakable aura of analogue hardware create a body of music which encompasses experimental sounds from lo-fi, to electronica, cinematic scores and acid-tinged techno.   With more Destiino music forthcoming this year, ‘Afsila’ is out now via Lumière Noire Records.
