INTRODUCING YEEK WITH HIS SHAPE-SHIFTING NEW SINGLE ‘3000 MILES (BABY BABY)’

ACCLAIM FOR YEEK

“Yeek is the pop artist throwing convention to the wind”
i-D

“Unbounded by genre and making music that’s distinctly his own”
Complex

“Yeek’s songs are the best of both worlds, drawing on trip-hop and R&B in equal measure”
Pigeons and Planes

Introducing Filipino-American singer Yeek, who today shares ‘3000 Miles (Baby Baby)’, the lead single from his forthcoming new project, VALENCIA. Listen HERE.

‘3000 Miles (Baby Baby)‘ is a sleek slow burner that ushers in a new era for Yeek through a mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic soundscape. The song is his first taste of new music this year and follows his 2019 EP IDK WHERE, which Highsnobiety said “manages to effortlessly showcase his unique sound,” and last year’s collaboration with María Isabel on ‘Where Does The Love Go?‘ from her debut Stuck in the Sky EP.

Yeek is the artistic moniker of Sebastian Carandag, a shape-shifting singer, songwriter, and producer who blends bedroom pop and low-key indie rock with shadings of alt-R&B, hip hop, and chillwave into hypnotic, sub-three minute, melancholic meditations. A wholly undefinable and perfectly contemporary sound that Yeek has been refining since 2015 across two full-length projects, two EPs, and countless standalone singles, his unique brand of indie-pop has already landed him collaborations with like-minded artists, such as Dominic Fike, UMI, Bakar, DUCKWRTH and more.

With the release of his 2019 EP IDK WHERE, Yeek won praise from i-D, Pigeons & Planes, Ones to Watch, Highsnobiety, and more for its maturity and unbounded sense of style. Now on ‘3000 Miles (Baby Baby)’, he mixes grainy drum machines with gooey, sun-kissed synth melodies and his minimal vocal melodicism, moving between balmy, lackadaisical R&B and heartfelt hip hop flows.

Raised in Naples, South Florida, an area mostly known for the lo-fi, blown-out hip hop that’s been emanating from its Eastside in recent years, Yeek is part of a burgeoning wave of new artists piecing together a distinct identity for the West coast of Florida. While still steeped in the same DIY ethos and aesthetics that birthed Soundcloud rap, Yeek approaches his music from a perspective that’s based more on indie rock and pop songwriting. Now based in New York via a brief layover in Los Angeles, Yeek’s music derives part of its undefinability from his nomadic existence, from the hazy cinematics of California to the leisurely, effortless vibes of Florida to the melting pot artistic attitude of New York City.

‘3000 Miles (Baby Baby)’ is out now, buy/stream it here.

YIBBY ENLISTS PROLIFIC LONDON RAPPER LORD APEX ON HAZY NEW SINGLE 'CIGAR'

YIBBY ENLISTS PROLIFIC LONDON RAPPER LORD APEX ON HAZY NEW SINGLE ‘CIGAR’

by the partae February 6, 2021
written by the partae

“I’ve said it previously but I’m gonna keep saying it – Yibby is one of the strongest voices in the vanguard of Sydney hip-hop right now. Pay attention.” – Tommy Faith, triple j Unearthed

“Yibby’s energy and enthusiasm are innate – spitting bars with a confidence beyond his years without so much as breaking a sweat.” – FBi Radio

STREAM ‘CIGAR FT LORD APEX’ HERE

Further showcasing his disparate nature, idiosyncratic rapper YIBBY returns for his first offering of 2021 in the form of the hazy, boom bap track ‘Cigar’ featuring prolific London powerhouse Lord Apex.

Driven by a trap inspired beat from regular collaborators Clockwork Odyssey, ‘Cigar’ addresses the differences between the real and what’s a facade. Of the track’s main line, YIBBY says “I got the cigar line from that saying “close but no cigar” I actually thought the saying was “all smoke and no cigar” until I read up, but I liked it too much, so I kept it haha.”

With the constraints of border closures, this international alliance came together entirely over the internet with YIBBY stating “I’ve been listening to Apex heavy for a couple years now, so when I heard that beat and how it was really murky but also had a bounce I knew I wanted him on it, so I hit him up. I tried to do the hook too but as soon as I heard his tone on it, it was a wrap.”

Forever a melting pot of genres, YIBBY’s music always comes accompanied with coming of age tales and food for thought bars. His debut single ‘Woah’ came in late 2018 signalling the start of a rapid fire first year for the now 21-year-old which consisted of the Lost In Translation EP and a hard-hitting team up with fellow up-and-comer Raj Mahal.

Quickly gaining recognition from fans and media, in 2019 he came in at #14 on FBi Radio’s Most Played Artists. He also left his mark on triple j’s Bars of Steel and FBi Radio’s Independent Play series whilst garnering fans from Sniffers, Tone Deaf, Life Without Andy, Purple Sneakers and more. Single ‘Folk’, pulled from his debut EP, was added to spot rotation on triple j, as well as full adds on triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN Radio, 4ZZZ and EDGE Radio, and spins on Beats Radio 1.

Last year his major release ‘No Sweat’ was added to Spotify’s tastemaker playlists Local Hype, Beats n’ Bars and The Drip and was included in The Guardian’s Best Music for May.

On the live circuit he’s cut his teeth supporting Winston Surfshirt, Boo Seeka, Drapht, Arno Faraji, Milan Ring and Kuren as well as performing a show-stopping set at Bad Friday Festival.

PRAISE FOR INDIGO SPARKE

“I had the privilege and pleasure of getting to help Indigo put these recordings together back in April and throughout 2019. These songs became near and dear to me, and it was beautiful to help build the billowy landscapes within them. Indigo’s writing and voice are ethereal and angelic and guide me through internal canyons and plains. I’m deeply grateful to have been part of this and to have gotten to play and sing along side Indigo, and to have been able to eternalize a very special space and time with her, which I will always cherish.”
– Adrianne Lenker

“With these songs and her filament voice, Indigo brings us in to a private place and lights a fire there.” – Feist

“Indigo Sparke balance[s] heavy, reverb-drenched verses with moments of airy and acoustic whispers. This Australian artist tackles themes of vulnerability and femininity with an eye on life through a different lens.” – NPR, All Songs Considered

“Achingly beautiful and heart-wrenching… Feels impossibly intimate and vast at once, like a cherished secret that, once shared, becomes universal truth.” – Gorilla vs Bear

“Gorgeous and gentle… Sparke sings in an ethereal voice of the kind of love that makes you feel safe.” – Consequence of Sound

“If you like the hushed, delicate folk of Adrianne [Lenker]’s own material, you’re probably going to like this song too. Indigo is a natural, and this song hooks you in with little more than her voice and guitar.” -Brooklyn Vegan

“Sadly beautiful, haunting… Deceptively complex on an emotional level.” – Beats Per Minute

“A glowing guitar lullaby.” – Stereogum

Australian artist Indigo Sparke has shared a video for ‘Colourblind,’ the latest single from her anticipated debut album, Echo. The Paris, Texas-inspired video was co-directed by Sparke and DP Monica Buscarino.

Of the song and video, Sparke says “I think there was a period of time when I was almost laughing at how sad I was in the space of ambiguous liminal love. If you don’t start laughing, you just cry more. Its a feeling when you are kind of sick to your stomach and anxious but excited and not knowing what the fuck is going on. The space of waiting. Waiting to know someone else’s truth, or waiting to see someone, or waiting to see what the future holds for you and that person, or waiting to see if it’s even real. Everything becomes that person, everything reminds you of that person, everything speaks that persons name. It’s a bittersweet thing.” She expands more on the song and video in an essay penned for Talkhouse.

Indigo Sparke brings her deeply personal lived experiences to her music, highlighting the spaces between the polarity of softness and grit. Pulling from her experiences of addiction, of healing, of queerness, of heartbreak, of joy, of connection, of the softness and of the grit alchemizing it all into tenderness through her music, she conjures up a myriad of feelings that is undeniably potent.

Echo, which was co-produced by Sparke, Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker and Andrew Sarlo, is available for pre-order now and due February 19th via Sacred Bones.

Indigo was born in the belly of Sydney, Australia straight into the heart of a family with music in their bones. Her parents, a jazz singer and a musician, named her after the Duke Ellington song ‘Mood Indigo,’ and her childhood was spent serenaded by a rich soundtrack of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. From a young age Indigo felt called to the stage, attending a performing arts high school, and followed it with three years in an acting school, working as an actress before embedding herself and heeding the call to the path of music.

Indigo taught herself to play guitar in her early twenties. Over the next few years, she established herself on the Australian music scene, and released her EP Night Bloom in 2016.  Indigo’s career continually bloomed, opening for Big Thief on the Australian dates of their 2017/ 2018 tour, and then was invited to play at South by Southwest 2019. There, NPR‘s Bob Boilen was first taken by Indigo, writing that her lyrics “both cut hard and comfort” and that her performance “balanced heavy, reverb-drenched verses with moments of airy and acoustic whispers.” Sparke began 2020 with a February Tiny Desk Concert at NPR, and had been booked as the opening act for Big Thief‘s sold-out tour of Australia and New Zealand, including a scheduled performance at the Sydney Opera House before Covid-19 saw everything change.

It was in 2019 that Indigo lived and travelled across America, in places like NYC, Minneapolis, Topanga, Taos, in many hotel rooms and amidst the vast stretching landscapes on the never ending highways, channelling her creative energy into the completion of her latest album, echo. echo was recorded between LA, Italy and New York, co-produced by Sparke, Adrianne Lenker (of Big Thief), and Andrew Sarlo (producer of Big Thief, Nick Hakim, Bon Iver, Hand Habits, etc). The record was completed at Figure 8 Studio in New York City, studio of musician Shahzad Ismaily. Phil Weinrobe (producer/engineer for Leonard Cohen, Damien Rice, Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, etc) engineered and mixed the album.

Of this incredibly deep and intimate record, Indigo says, “When writing and recording the record, I wondered how it would all come together. I felt like I was standing back in the desert, looking up at the blue night sky, wondering how all the stars would connect. I think sometimes it’s the dark matter or void space between them, that holds it all together. This record is an ode to death and decay. And the restlessness I feel to belong to something greater. Adrianne and I talked so much about keeping the record stripped back and simple, that is, we are all just constantly getting stripped back and humbled by life.”

Indigo’s art searches for the vulnerability that comes with a feeling of true safety, a vulnerability that can grant access to a world behind tangible experience. It is clear Indigo has lived and woven her many lives into these songs, telling us, “I feel and have often felt a million different women ramble and reconfigure the corners of my mind and soul. I think in my life, I have ricocheted off so many different walls within myself. It’s an endless search to understand the mysteries of life and love and history. As soon as you think you’ve got it, it’s gone. Sometimes I feel so thin. Sometimes I feel so robust. I think that comes through the music.”

While Indigo’s songs are an oceanic experience of emotion, her poetry is grounded. Like stone markers on the path, her poems are left for the reader as crossroads where something takes over beyond the logical mind. The visual realm has always been a part of Indigo’s writing process; songs and poems come to her as landscapes and human compositions, and her relationship with the camera is as natural as with the guitar. Indigo’s photography is a collaborative emotional practice that builds trust with the subject and helps them witness themselves in their most beautiful state. Photography’s compositional power has also led Indigo to re-imagine her work as an actress. Rather than working solely in front of the camera, she is transitioning into a role as composer and creative director, making projects that she can step into as subject rather than object.

“I feel that death and time hang over me like questions, I have felt the shimmer and the edge for so long now but what I long for are the worlds of safety and safe love. There are so many windows in life to look through and so many ways to heal and express. My photography, poetry and music, were born at a juncture mirroring different parts of me. I see and feel visually, I am obsessed with immortalizing memory.”

Image: Cian Marangos Melbourne metal stalwarts Void Of Vision have teamed up with Thornhill's Jacob Charlton for a reimagined version of 'Year Of The Rat'. Taken from Void Of Vision's 2019 album Hyperdaze, this cut comes oozing with classic VOV heaviness, complete with ethereal vocals from the Thornhill vocalist throughout. On looking back at 'Year Of The Rat' over a year since its original release, Void Of Vision frontman Jack Bergin describes having a chance to really value his growth since writing the track. "While I still feel like I’m not where I want to be mentally, it’s songs like this where I can truly see how much has really changed around me in such a short space of time. To gain a form of positivity from such an overwhelmingly negative track over the course of such an overwhelmingly negative year speaks volumes to the importance of heavy music and the reflection within it," he says, adding: "'Year Of The Rat' was written for those who have reached their expiry date, for the weak that have finally been weeded out. Watching an undeserving individual have a position of ‘power’ stripped from them has been a common theme throughout the year 2020, this song goes out to them.” Today's release also comes alongside a hectic new music video starring Jacob, check it out below.

VOID OF VISION UNLEASH ‘YEAR OF THE RAT’ FEAT. THORNHILL’S JACOB CHARLTON + NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Melbourne metal stalwarts Void Of Vision have teamed up with Thornhill’s Jacob Charlton for a reimagined version of ‘Year Of The Rat‘. Taken from Void Of Vision’s 2019 album Hyperdaze, this cut comes oozing with classic VOV heaviness, complete with ethereal vocals from the Thornhill vocalist throughout.

On looking back at ‘Year Of The Rat’ over a year since its original release, Void Of Vision frontman Jack Bergin describes having a chance to really value his growth since writing the track.

“While I still feel like I’m not where I want to be mentally, it’s songs like this where I can truly see how much has really changed around me in such a short space of time. To gain a form of positivity from such an overwhelmingly negative track over the course of such an overwhelmingly negative year speaks volumes to the importance of heavy music and the reflection within it,” he says, adding:

“‘Year Of The Rat’ was written for those who have reached their expiry date, for the weak that have finally been weeded out. Watching an undeserving individual have a position of ‘power’ stripped from them has been a common theme throughout the year 2020, this song goes out to them.”

Today’s release also comes alongside a hectic new music video starring Jacob, check it out below.

On collaborating with the Thornhill vocalist, Bergin explains that it comes full circle over five years after Jacob originally approached him to collab.

“About 5 years ago Jacob approached me after one of our hometown shows and asked if I wanted to do guest vocals on his new, up-and-coming band’s track. I’m pretty sure I said yeah, but forgot all about it until a good half a year later when our videographer Cian called and told me I had to come down to do guest vocals on this band that he was working with. The band in question ended up being Jacob and the rest of Thornhill tracking their debut EP, so I’m glad I listened to Cian for once,” he laughs.

Jacob adds that 2020 found the friends working on multiple creative ventures together outside of their respective bands.

“Jumping on this track was kind of like a little break for us both where we had the opportunity to build on something that had already been created,” he says. “Aside from that I was honestly super stoked to be a part of the project in general, VOV have always played a special part in Thornhill’s history so it was very cool to be included on a special part of their history.”

With its release in September 2019, Hyperdaze seized a stark brand of bleakness akin only to Void Of Vision. Describing the record as seeping with pure hatred, self-loathing and nihilism, Bergin admits writing Hyperdaze offered a cathartic purge of darkness for him personally.

On top of knockout global album reviews upon its release, Void Of Vision went on to support Northlane around Australia, took to festivals including Heaven And Hell Festival, Schema Festival and UNIFY and headlined across Australia and Japan in early 2020.

With a year’s worth of lockdown spent fervently creating, Void Of Vision now stand poised to release more music shortly.

Artist: Felix Cartal & Kiiara Title: Happy Hour Label: Physical Presents Download / Stream Returning in a sparkling pop creation via a proven collaboration, we see platinum producer Felix Cartal and celebrated songstress Kiiara defy the usual industry standards and allow their creativity to guide them on their latest single. "Happy Hour" is an uplifting tune paired with wry, personal lyrics that will provide the next anthem for 2021, out now via Physical Presents. Who needs romantic perfection when you have radiant happiness and a drink in your hand? Felix Cartal says about the song: "The idea and lyrics for this song were created during a writing session in Norway. I think my time in Scandinavia was really beneficial to my songwriting process because they have this effortless approach to pop writing. We had a breakthrough when we started thinking of juxtaposing ‘Happy Hour’ with darker lyrics. It kind of all fell together once we figured out how to attack it, and I dub it my ‘uplifting loser anthem.’ It felt sort of pop, but sort of unconventional, and to have Kiiara feature on it was unreal because I felt that her pop music has that same unpredictable quality.” Kiiara tells us about the collaboration: "Felix and I have been meaning to work together on an original song of our own for years. I've always been a fan of his work. I remember him sending me a remix of my song ‘Feels’ a few years back and I was blown away. I'm really excited about our new song ‘Happy Hour.’ It's a melodramatic emo anthem (lol that's both of our specialities)." With over 270 Million Spotify plays and counting, Vancouver based Felix Cartal has three platinum singles "Get What You Give" "Love Me," and "Mine" under his belt, as well as an award for Dance Recording of the Year at Junos 2020. His music has been featured on major Youtube channels Trap Nation, Mr. Suicide Sheep, Mr. Revillz, Chill Nation, Selected, and xKito amongst others, accumulating over 90 Million views. He has also seen support from BBC Radio 1's Danny Howard and Diplo & Friends and SiriusXM Chill has also heavily supported several singles, while his Weekend Workout radio show was featured on SiriusXM Diplo's Revolution. Felix has collaborated with several major artists such as Kaskade, R3HAB, and Gallant; additionally, he has created official remixes for the likes of Selena Gomez, Zedd, Galantis, Dillon Francis, MØ, Ellie Goulding, Diplo and more recently, Anne-Marie & Doja Cat as well as Daya & Shallou's "Older." Kiiara's breakout single "Gold" reached no. 5 on Billboard's US Top 40 charts and over 675 million streams alone. In total, she's amassed over 2 billion streams across platforms. The singer has been featured by several industry mammoths including David Guetta, Linkin Park, and Cheat Codes. Kiiara has also collaborated with blackbear on the single, "So Sick" which was recently remixed by Martin Jensen. "Happy Hour" is the first release since her debut album "lil kiiwi" from October 2020. "Felix has carved his own path in this crazy dance music world, building a loyal fan base track by track" Billboard about Felix Cartal "It goes from a cool electro place into some more mellow, halftime vibes during the hook. No earth-shattering drops, no pandering. This is just good music for great people." Complex about Felix Cartal "chopped and screwed vocals sit so perfectly in the track's jerky electro that you almost forget they're there." The Guardian about Kiiara "chorus had a trance-like pull, chopping up vocals and splicing them into an indecipherable hyperpop concoction." Pitchfork about Kiiara's "Gold" "Kiiara's lighter-than-air vocals are coupled with a flirtatious beat on 'Intention,' which definitely didn't get as much consideration as Low Kii Savage single 'Gold,' but is no less catchy." Oatmeal Queen ‘In My Mind’ Premiere

by the partae February 6, 2021
written by the partae
From their avid obsession with oatmeal to their musical style, singer/songwriter, producer, and keyboardist Paloma Pendharkar has always stood out from the crowd. In 2019, they released the single “Stay Here,” marking their departure as Oatmeal Queen, a solo artist unconfined by genre based on unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) nations. The new record, Martian, welcomes listeners into the mind of someone struggling to find their place in a community of humans.

Outside of this project, Paloma is a piano teacher, an aspiring actor, and has played keys with acts like Nette, Chersea, and Vivace on stages across so-called Canada and the U.S. She prides herself on writing from the heart with inspiration from other artists and friends who make art that explores and/or lives beyond the various systems of oppression we exist within. At times reminiscent of Lucy Dacus and at others of Mitski or Alabama Shakes, the record is narrative, unpredictable, and complex without sacrificing its playfulness. It is here that Paloma’s personality shines in all of its many facets.

New Zealand MC MELODOWNZ has today shared ‘Money‘, the Polynesian wordsmith’s first drop of new music for 2021. Listen and watch HERE.

Where previous release ‘Big Deals‘ featuring Diggy Dupé celebrated the hustle, ‘Money‘ charts what comes next, when you’ve secured the bag. “Everybody want a piece of the pie right, so we can all eat?” MELODOWNZ raps – when you’re determined to grind and others “start to cook beef,” at what point do you slow down?

First teased in the outro of the ‘Big Deals‘ music video, ‘Money‘ is produced by Tariq Beats (A$AP Ferg, Tyga, Tinashe) who layers MELODOWNZ‘s blistering grit atop slapping drums and brooding chords. With room to breathe, the result is a savage assessment of capitalism, clout, class systems, materialism, poverty and the price of fame.

“When I wrote ‘Money’ I wanted to express how we are conditioned by money in today’s society. It’s a social norm to want nice things, have a good job, get married, have kids, buy a house etc. To a lot of people, that is their validation for success,” MELODOWNZ says. “I wrote the first half of the song back in 2014, so to revisit it, switch it up, and get it finished in LA at DJ Khalil’s studio was a true dream for me.”

Fresh off of an extensive Summer tour playing several festival main-stage slots across New Zealand, ‘Money‘ is the latest offering from the rapper’s forthcoming debut studio album set for release this year, following his collaboration with Denzel Curry on ‘No Mercy‘, ‘Fine‘, and ‘Big Deals‘ featuring Diggy Dupé. Stay tuned for more from MELODOWNZ in 2021.

‘Money‘ is out now via Def Jam ANZ / SNIFFERS Records,

RELEASES NEW SINGLE
‘IF WE NEVER DANCE AGAIN’
LIFTED FROM FORTHCOMING EP ‘THE NIGHT’ – OUT MARCH 5
PRE-ORDER ‘THE NIGHT’ EP

MEDIA RELEASE:: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 5

Pete Murray today releases his second official single ‘If We Never Dance Again’ from his forthcoming EP THE NIGHT, which is set for release Friday March 5 via Sony Music Entertainment Australia.

BUY/LISTEN TO ‘IF WE NEVER DANCE AGAIN’
PRE-ORDER ‘THE NIGHT’ EP

Written in LA in May 2019 on his first ever co-writing trip, Pete sat down with writer and producer Morgan Dorr to create the piano-heavy track. On its inception, Pete explains, “Morgan had the first line of the chorus written when I got to his place, which was, “If you never see my face again” and the three chords that played over this. We worked on the song all day and I even cancelled another session that I had booked in just so I could finish this song as it felt like this had so much potential.” After returning to Australia, the pair worked together across continents to produce the song you hear today.

Alongside the single, the video will premiere on Pete Murray’s YouTube channel from 8:30am AEDT Friday, February 5. Fans can tune in and chat with Pete as they wait to see the exquisitely shot clip. Filmed and edited by regular collaborator Mos & Co, Pete explains, “Because the song is powerful and quite epic, I wanted a clip that would enhance this. I didn’t want this to be a literal video but more of an abstract one, so that when you watch it, you are more taken away by the beautiful cinematic footage while still keeping mystery at the end.”  And the chemistry between the couple in the video is unmistakeable.  A genuine romance and moment in time captured beautifully, they are partners in real life and were married between shoot days.

TUNE IN TO THE VIDEO PREMIERE OF ‘IF WE NEVER DANCE AGAIN’

Recorded in his hometown of Byron Bay, THE NIGHT EP is inspired by his family and the life experiences that have gotten him to where he is today. It’s a poignant, introspective EP that highlights Pete’s iconic vocals and rich acoustic sound, and propels Pete further into the quintessential easy-listening sphere that he’s well-loved for. The EP is available for pre-order now and is set for release on March 5, delighting fans with an earlier release than originally scheduled.

With the earlier release date, Pete will be playing the new tracks, plus crowd favourites at the upcoming By The C Festival.  For more dates and details on where you can hear him live, visit: https://petemurray.com/#shows

Perth Burmese rapper, DJ and audio engineer KOTA shares his new release ‘WASTED’, with heavy hip-hop roots and strong spitfire energy, premiered via Milky yesterday. Releasing alongside a video clip, ‘WASTED’ is a free-flowing and introspective track that explores the themes of new beginnings. “This new track was influenced by a short break I had with my music where I wasn’t being focused and going out too much, but I stopped all that and I'm now ready to work - which is talked about in the hook,” says KOTA. The video clip which also releases today offers an imaginative and aesthetic narrative to accompany the track. The video features KOTA slowly submerging in water encased in a perspex coffin, symbolising re-emerging as an artist after feeling misdirected or trapped. In relation to the creation of the film clip, KOTA explains: "The production team and myself really went all in for this video and it's my proudest work to date. Being able to watch your track come to life is an amazing feeling and I can't wait to share this with everyone." Prior to ‘WASTED’, KOTA has been releasing tracks since 2018, finding and establishing his own signature sound, leaving an impression on some of Perth’s biggest events such as Get Bodied Festival (The Game Sports Bar), Liquid Kandy 1+2 (Metro City), Apocalypse Tour Perth (Jack Rabbit Slims), Riddim (Gilkison's) and more. KOTA has also supported some of the leading names in Australian hip-hop such as ChillinIt, Drapht and Wombat, and worked alongside rising artist, Nerve for his track 'Like That'.   If this release is anything to judge the rest of 2021, KOTA will be an anticipated artist to watch.

If you're a fan of Ocean Alley and The Rubens then I think there'll be plenty about Chutney that you'll be into.  Declan Byrne (Triple J)  That voice is crazy good! I love the way you belt it out but keep it cruisy at the same time. Claire Mooney (Triple J)  A breezy breed of indie rock with just enough grit, it’ll hook you in from the first chord.  Happy Mag  Vocals are akin to the likes of Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, with a music composition which would not seem out of place in the early 2000s. Young Creative Press  “Real love is hard to come by. So you find a way to cope without it.” The melancholy quote from Sir Elton John’s biopic, Rocketman, struck a chord for Chutney lead vocalist, Matt Hansford, after watching the film on a weekday afternoon. Inspired to put pen to paper, the line was rewritten “real love is hard to come by, she’ll take whatever she can get, you cut a certain silhouette” and the concept for Invisible was conceived.  Featuring honeyed vocal harmonies and guitar lines not uncommon in the early 2000s britpop scene, the track’s unique structure flips a standard song arrangement on its head, replacing the absent chorus with a defining riff to compliment the song’s steady beat.  Delving into the minds of the lonely, the single vocalises the thoughts that come with feeling not good enough and unlucky in love. Frontman, Matt Hansford, explains: “Everyone at some point in their life feels as though they don’t deserve someone’s love, that they’re invisible and dragging them down. You can be left thinking maybe they would be better off without you in their life”. Invisible, although forlorn in its lyricism, somehow manages to leave you with a sense of warmth. As though being invisible isn’t so bad after all, if it means realising you’re with the wrong person. The thought-provoking lyrics paired with a palpable solo from guitarist Cal Hughes, prove Chutney is well and truly on their way to a future alongside some of their biggest musical influences, Catfish and the Bottlemen & The Strokes. The single will also be accompanied by a satire-soaked music video, set for release on February 11.  Chutney’s electrifying live shows and expressive songwriting verifies the four-piece as a standout in the Gold Coast alternative rock scene. With all members hailing from separate local bands Augusta, Hot Coffee and the Stingin’ Rogers before coming together in late 2019 to turn their mutual love for lyrical indie rock into a fully fledged outfit.  The boys kick-started their musical career releasing their debut track Romance & Intrigue, catching the attention of local fans, leaving them with a taste for Chutney and wanting more. Subsequently, further tracks were released and began charting in the top 5 on triple j Unearthed, setting the group up for their self-titled five track EP shared in September of 2020. The release carries mastering credits from Brian Lucey of Arctic Monkeys, the Black Keys and Chet Faker fame along with production by longtime collaborator Scotty French of Lovestreet Studios.  The EP’s opening track Consolation Prize presents a bluesy ballad listeners can’t help but sing along to, with the song consequently receiving praise from triple j Unearthed tastemakers. Juxtaposing this track, the EP also notably features high-energy, riff-driven track Outcast. Quickly becoming a fan favourite, the thrashing tune showcases Chutney’s versatility whilst remaining true to their british-influenced roots.  Impressively slick guitar lines, magnetic vocals, pounding drums and throbbing bass lines, form the crux of this first-class lineup, with the self-proclaimed “condiment rockers” proving to be more than just a side sauce, they’re the whole damn meal.  CHUTNEY  NEW SINGLE INVISIBLE – FEBRUARY 4  LISTEN TO UNRELEASED TRACK HERE  PRE-SAVE THE TRACK HERE  https://www.facebook.com/officialchutneyband/

Where are you currently based?

I live in Brisbane.

How did you first start playing music?

My cousin Dave taught me a few chords on the guitar. He had a black Gibson Les Paul and I always thought it was super cool. When I left school a bunch of my girlfriends and I went to Bali together and I ended up getting on stage with a Balinese band and playing all night. Then they invited me to play with them the following night, and the night after until I was playing with them every night on my holiday. I loved it, I went back to Australia and quit uni and started a band!

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

I spent my lockdown breaks teaching myself how to play the piano. I found great comfort in it, there’s a lot to learn so time off was really helpful.

You’ve got a big bunch of new solo tracks, how did the idea to write and perform solo come about?

I have a quite eclectic musical taste and I felt very boxed in playing only in The Superjesus.  We are sort of expected to keep to a similar format so all my wild ideas were going to waste. I had to go solo or I would have nowhere to park my creativity. I love being in The Superjesus more now because I can get my kicks elsewhere then still come home to the one I love 🙂

How did you go about writing the tracks?

I write on piano now, it’s changed the way I approach the whole thing. I always start with a chorus, I tweak it until I’ve got a hook, then I work backwards and create the story around it. If the hook isn’t strong enough there’s no point writing the rest.

You’ll be touring Australia in March 2021, how do you prepare for live shows and what can we expect?

This tour is a different show as I’m playing two sets. I’m opening the show as a piano player and then the main act is me again but as a solo rock show.  🙂 I’ve never tried a tour like this before, it’s a bit ambitious but I’m up for it.

Any shows that you’re especially looking forward to playing?

All of them!

What do you find most challenging and rewarding whilst touring and playing solo?

I enjoy seeing emotion in people, whether they are shedding a few tears in a sad song or smiling hard in their favourite rock song. I like to connect with people and make sure they have a good time because that’s what it’s all about!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Shawn Mendes new album, I literally cannot get enough of it.

What do you like to do away from music?

Make cocktails.

What’s planned for 2021?

I’m working on a new solo record and also writing new songs with The Superjesus. Whichever project has the most songs by mid to late year will get their record made first!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
