For Perth-via-Busselton trio Pretty Uglys, 2020 remained a fairly fruitful year even though the party/live music opportunities elsewhere around the country came to a screeching halt. Out on the West Coast, the band dedicated the year to the preparation of their forthcoming EP Party Friends, releasing two tracks in ‘Soak It Up’ and ‘Dreamland Delusion’ - both further establishing the band as one to watch. WA’s Pretty Uglys return for the new year with amped tune ‘Party Friends’

For Perth-via-Busselton trio Pretty Uglys, 2020 remained a fairly fruitful year even though the party/live music opportunities elsewhere around the country came to a screeching halt. Out on the West Coast, the band dedicated the year to the preparation of their forthcoming EP Party Friends, releasing two tracks in ‘Soak It Up’ and ‘Dreamland Delusion’ – both further establishing the band as one to watch.

And now, as 2021 kicks off with hope, excitement and much anticipation for a return to normal, the Pretty Uglys guys kick this new era off with the EP’s title track, releasing ‘Party Friends’ in January from their forthcoming EP set for release in 2021.

A track that demonstrates the band’s strong dynamic, a love for some classic surf rock influences and a lean further into confident new sounds and lyricism, ‘Party Friends’ is the quintessential Pretty Uglys vibe that that band is charging ahead into the New Year with.

“‘Party Friends’ is a track about the connection often made during those not-so-sober times with friends that leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. It’s also about feeling accepted by your mates, staying true to yourself and the importance of having friends around.” Pretty Uglys

Writing and recording the track as a collective out of Perth’s Sumo Studios, Pretty Uglys approached their latest single with this overarching theme of bonds and connection well in mind, as well as their eventual return to touring. With dates locked in for Western Australia throughout January, Pretty Uglys are gonna be out on stages and back with fans very soon.

“We couldn’t be any more stoked to be playing the run of shows in January. 2020 was a strange year for everyone and it feels amazing to have heaps of shows on the horizon again; even better to have so many of our mates’ bands joining us for the ride.” Pretty Uglys

PRAISE FOR PRETTY UGLYS

“Big fans of Skegss, Tired Lion and Violent Soho have found themselves a new favourite band!”
Triple J, Claire Mooney

“These dudes always deliver…”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“Pretty Uglys have come forward to keep a future for infectious surf-rock in a way that feels authentic and properly surf-rock, comparable to long-time pioneers in the sound from FIDLAR to Skegsss, but with an edge that keeps it distinct to them.”
Pilerats

“They belt out an infectious brand of surfy garage with an energy that most bands take years to develop.”
Happy Magazine

After looking ahead to an exciting 2020, where they would play their biggest shows to date in Manchester and London, pick up arena tour dates with Blossoms and accept the invitation from Paul Weller to open his UK-wide run of shows, The Lathums nimbly swerved the wreckage of the Coronavirus pandemic to remain stubbornly on the rise. The Lathums meet Joker on the seafront as the buoyant four-piece embrace the surreal in the widescreen video for: FOOLISH PARLEY

by the partae January 6, 2021
written by the partae

The Lathums – Foolish Parley
OUT NOW as part of the Ghosts EP on Island Records“.. prodigious projections of hope, passion and drive” – CLASH
“The Lathums really are top of their class” – MUSIC WEEK
“There’s shades of Arctic Monkeys in their rise and in the spine-tingling ‘All My Life’…
but the fun is only just getting started” – NME

Wordy and worldy indie four-piece, The Lathums, land somewhere between Bowie’s famous stroll across East Sussex sands in Ashes To Ashes, the heart-stopping catatonia of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and the monochrome menace of A Clockwork Orange in the absorbingly surreal, widescreen promo for their track, Foolish Parley. Cut to a distinctly conceptual, arthouse feel in deep black and white and interspersed with live footage from beneath the baroque splendour of Blackpool Tower, the Wigan band reveal their theatrical poise with brooding, poker-faced performances in full, rain-smudged make-up.

The growling, tremelo-warped Foolish Parley originally appeared on The Lathums’ Ghost EP in October, an essential cut from the band’s 2020 soundtrack, a year that saw them honoured with a place on the BBC Sound Of 2021 longlist, appearing on Later… With Jools Holland and enjoying a week-long BBC Radio One residency on the BBC Introducing Playlist. The new, James Slater-directed video finds the barely twenty-somethings nudged into noir and embracing the surreal, losing all sense of time and reality along the rugged, sea-lashed, British shoreline.

Inspired by traditional customs out at sea, in which warring factions would set down arms to negotiate, Foolish Parley’s lyrics open a door once more into the old soul of bookish front man and lyricist, Alex Moore. Of the track, he says: “Being honest, this just came to me out of nowhere, I can’t pinpoint from exactly where or why. Like a lot of songs, it was something that flowed freely, working first time and, sometimes, it takes no more thinking about than that.”

FOLK SINGER-SONGWRITER RYLAND MORANZ RELEASES NEW SINGLE 'WHERE ARE MY BLUE EYES'
Music News

FOLK SINGER – SONGWRITER RYLAND MORANZ RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘WHERE ARE MY BLUE EYES’ 2nd SINGLE FROM NEW ALBUM OUT ON JANUARY 15th

by the partae January 5, 2021
written by the partae

Alberta-based singer-songwriter Ryland Moranz has always been a firm believer that the old ways are the best ways. So when he set out to create the video for his latest single ‘Where Are My Blue Eyes’, the self-professed ‘analog snob’ decided they should shoot it on 16mm film.

After the filming the video in Lethbridge and Edmonton with director Evan Uschenko, the film was processed, developed and scanned.  The developed film was then augmented by applying paint, ink, and by scratching with the needle from an old CBGB’s pin.  Each frame was painted by hand, a process that took over 40 hours.  The result is an intriguing piece of art in which all the luck, trial, and mistakes can be seen in earnest.  Not everything in this video is perfect, and that’s exactly the point.

“‘Where Are My Blue Eyes’ is the most honest thing I’ve ever written, and the video reflects that,” says Ryland.  “All the imagery; musings on love, the fallacy of humanity and the salvation that is found in the temporary nature of the universe is at the heart of who I am as an artist and as a growing human being.  This song came to me as a revelation, and it revealed that nothing is ever really forgotten and that I am as I am just as you are as you will be.  And if that’s the case then all is right in the universe.”

Following the October release of ‘If I Had Wings’, ‘Where Are My Blue Eyes’ is the 2nd single from Ryland’s new album XO, 1945, which will be out on January 15th. A song that Ryland calls his favourite song he’s ever written, ‘Where Are My Blue Eyes’ actually came about by accident.

“I was on tour with Leeroy Stagger in California and we had a day on in San Rafael,” says Ryland. “I was in a music store and found an amazing banjo that dated back to 1890. It was the real deal from its handcrafted inlay to its ivory tuning pegs; an equally stunning and sinister feature.  It was in a tuning I didn’t recognize, which turned out to be open C, an old timey sort of tuning that evokes the tectonic cultural tone of the instrument.  I became obsessed with the tuning and over the next afternoon developed what became the bones of the song.”

Ryland Moranz’s new single ‘Where Are My Blue Eyes’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. His new album XO, 1945 will be released on January 15th, 2021 through Tonic Records.

2020 PRODUCES ONE MORE DISASTER WITH THE RELEASE OF YOLANDA BE COOL & DCUP’S ‘WE NO SPEAK AMERICANO’ 10TH ANNIVERSARY MUSIC VIDEO

by the partae December 24, 2020
written by the partae

Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP, as self aware as ever, have released a video clip to accompany the 10 year anniversary of their worldwide hit ‘We No Speak Americano’. The clip is befitting of the year that has been 2020, featuring Australian comedian, Sam Simmons playing an evil god-like figure and causing general destruction and mayhem across planet Earth, before hitting that big-red button and prompting perhaps the biggest disaster of all of 2020, the re-release of ‘We No Speak Americano’.

We’ve all been through the thick of it this year, from the Australian bushfires, to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been one to forget. However, as we reach the tail-end of the year, we all had some hope that the big man in Earth’s control room would take it a bit easier on us, well, with the help of Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP themselves, Sam Simmons made sure that certainly wasn’t the case. In their own tongue in cheek way, Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP poke fun at themselves and the sensation of ‘We No Speak Americano’ in their new video, as Channel Nine presenter Karl Stefanovic puts it quite precisely in the clip, “In what has been another disaster to strike in 2020, Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP’s ‘We No Speak Americano’ is being re-released for 2020.” The clip itself keeps in line with the virality of the original track, highlighting the mass of dances, challenges, cat videos, and viral YouTube and TikTok clips to come out of the pop-culture phenomenon that was ‘We No Speak Americano’. Sam himself gets in on the jig, and who can blame him because as proven 10 years ago you simply can’t hear this track and not want to get a bit silly and make a fool of yourself. The clip embodies everything the track was about 10 years ago, having a bit of fun and seeing the light side of life, a motto that is as important as any in a year such as 2020.

On the video clip, Yolanda Be Cool said, “Whilst 2020 hasn’t lived up to the expectations and in contrast has been a very hard time for people around the world, we wanted to try and bring a little hope to the suffering by celebrating on some lighter happier times, all of which the song has inspired over the years.”

Further detailing the concept behind the video, production company Knack Studios and co-directors Rob Norman and Nick Sullivan share “when Yolanda Be Cool approached us to make a clip for the 10 year anniversary re-release we knew from the start that we wanted to tackle it from a lighthearted angle. At the risk of offending Matty and Andy, we pitched the idea “slob god” unleashing the song to the masses in an attempt at one last cruel twist of the insane year that was 2020.  A short (nerve racking) silence on the other end  of the line was followed by plenty of froth and off we went.”

The hit single went to #1 in over 20 countries back in 2010, with the record winning the ARIA Award for Best Dance Release, and topped various charts the world over from Russia to South Africa, and across United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, and Switzerland. The dance sensation that featured in films such as The Inbetweeners Movie, Hop, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, The Great Beauty, and Peter Rabbit, showcasing the reach and presence of the release and its place in the mainstream. The track kickstarted the careers of the duo, who have gone on to produce popular releases such as ‘Sugar Man’, ‘Soul Makossa (Money)’, ‘From Me To You’, and more recently their 2019 hit ‘Dance and Chant’ garnered over 17 million collective streams seeing the talented duo continuing to deliver their infectious records time and time again.

Didirri ‘It’s The Season’ Regional Victorian Tour – 170 Russell Melbourne – Supported by Eaglemont Review

by the partae December 23, 2020
written by the partae

Playing to a Sold Out and seated 170 Russell on Friday the 18th of December, Didirri mesmerized the Melbourne audience with his enchanting vocals, elegant songwriting and charismatic solo performance playing both acoustic guitar and keyboard.  Didirri carried himself with an oh so loveable honest and modest demeanor whilst capturing the attention of everyone within ears reach with the slightest tone from his soulful voice.  The crowd listened intently to every single song lyric and and every story between each song with huge respect and a noticeable feeling of awe.  Didirri is a young man who has a huge future ahead of him, we are all lucky to be able to witness this talented artist blossom.  Didirri was supported by the eclectic jangle/fuzz singer/songwriter Eaglemont who took the audience on a brutally honest ride of heart felt songs from tales of growing up and being grown up, hats off to the both of you.

“There’s plenty of punk melodies and rock edge…” – Wall Of Sound

Lie Through Your Teeth is an EP based around the consequences when we lie to others, we lie to ourselves, and we in turn are lied to. The EP looks at a range of circumstances where the truth is withheld and how that affects everyone in the situation.

“When we approached this EP, we wanted to create something that translated into our high energy live performances. This has resulted in an aggressive, powerful yet polished sound that we believe is our best release to date.” says vocalist, Josh Walker.

First single from Lie Through Your Teeth is Mindless features Mikaila Delgado from Yours Truly.

Stuck Out have also released videos for Inverse and False Promise.

Stuck Out’s lyrics resonate like that familiar internal monologue we all shared when we discovered one simple truth: growing up is not all it’s cracked up to be. Navigating the ins and outs of complex relationships, while trying to find your place in a world that makes less sense by the day have become the cornerstone for the band’s lyrics, and they want to use every platform they can to help music lovers feel a little less alone. While some musicians play their cards quite close to their chest, Stuck Out have worn their heart on their sleeve since day one, and it has lead to them garnishing a keen and loyal fanbase.

The young four piece have made their way around Australia multiple times over the past few years off the back of their 2018 Greyscale Records debut EP You Won’t Come Home. They have supported acts such as As It Is, With Confidence, The Story So Far, and Senses Fail; enrapturing audiences with their blend of rock infused pop-punk that cuts through to a deeper layer of the human condition. The band can also now forever lay claim to playing the very first note ever played on a stage at the now staple of the Australian heavy music calendar, Good Things Festival.

2020 saw the band knuckle down to work on a follow up to their debut EP, and came out the other side with a very pointed EP titled Lie Through Your Teeth. Now the band & Greyscale Records look to the future as they add Sharptone Records to the team to help them push from one of the most exciting bands in Australia, to one of the biggest in the world.

Wankelmut joins Norma Jean Martine on high energy piano house banger following the massive 'Head Shoulders Knees & Toes'

Wankelmut joins Norma Jean Martine on high energy piano house banger following the massive ‘Head Shoulders Knees & Toes’

by the partae December 22, 2020
written by the partae

German producer Wankelmut lays his magic touch to her poppy single, amplifying its feel-good vibes to a new level. Her classy, flowing vocal delivery is fused to a high-energy piano house groove that bumps and bounces in all the right places. The piano chords are sprightly and accent the groove in a ‘90s house style, while the plump bass melody adds more colour. A clever arrangement keeps the remix interesting and intriguing throughout, finding the perfect balance between dancefloor power and radio-friendly. It’s the perfect complement to her innovative songwriting and soulful voice.  Wankelmut makes for the perfect remixer for her, with remixes for the likes of Gossip, Royksöpp, Dennis Lloyd and Flight Facilities among his 300 million+ Spotify plays.

‘’Following the recent global success of my collaboration with Ofenbach on ‘Head Shoulders Knees and Toes’, I’m really excited to release this remix of Basketball as a fresh new take on the song.’’ Norma explains ‘’ I love the way Wankelmut used the outro hook from the original to make a really fun, bouncy, and catchy drop in this version. Remixes are interesting because they dress up a song in a totally new way, and they not only show the versatility of a strong melody, but the power and ability of chords and tonality to express different emotions.’’

With 9 million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 200 million streams worldwide, Norma Jean Martine is blazing through the charts. The aforementioned ‘Head Shoulders Knees & Toes’ has been one of the standout hits of 2020, currently picking up over 1 million streams a day, it’s proved a real earworm of a track, hitting #60 in the Global Shazam Chart.

Her next EP ‘Visiting Hours’ is on the horizon and it features another dance banger alongside the amazing MOTi.

The official video of ‘Basketball’ Wankelmut Remix is out now and gives the track a 90’s vintage visual identity.

Norma Jean Martine: ‘’Douglas Dulgarian, the director and producer of the original, remixed the video as well. He experimented with VHS stock footage and negative processing to create a very instagram e-girl meets Lana Del Rey Video Games DIY’’

About Norma Jean Martine
Alt-pop talent Norma Jean Martine is the superstar vocalist with the recognizable husky, powerhouse voice and strong songwriting skills. Exploring the indie space with her own releases and embracing the dancefloors with collaborations, she’s touching a global audience: ‘When We Were Young’ with Lost Kings amassed 90M streams and gained praise from the US to Asia and this year she has a European hit under her belt with ‘Head Shoulder Knees And Toes’, a collaboration with Parisian dance duo Ofenbach and the German producers Quarterhead, racking up over 100M streams in less than a year and breaking a personal record with 1M streams a day. The charts and streaming results are undeniable: when Norma touches a song, magic happens.

Tones And I returns to busk in Bourke Street Mall

written by the partae
Australia’s breakout global star, Tones And I, has helped bring music back to Melbourne’s streets by returning to her former busking spot in Bourke Street Mall.

Tones And I made the surprise performance to help support local shops, restaurants, cafes and bars recovering from the impact of COVID-19.

After beginning her career busking on the streets of Melbourne and Byron Bay, her breakout single, Dance Monkey, was released in May 2019 and has now reached number one in more than 30 countries.

Dance Monkey was the second most streamed song in the world in 2020, with almost 2 billion streams on Spotify and 7 billion streams across all platforms.

The final pop-up performance was the result of a partnership between the Victorian Government, Mushroom Group and the City of Melbourne.

Participating artists included Daryl Braithwaite, Missy Higgins, Gordi, Mark Seymour, Vika and Linda, the Pierce Brothers and Hayley Mary.

The initiative is supported by the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne through the $100 million Melbourne City Recovery Fund.

In an initiative to increase the number of street performers, the City of Melbourne is calling for buskers to come forward and apply for a free permit and bring even more music and performance art to the streets.

Busking permits will remain free until June 2021 in recognition of the important role that buskers can play in our city’s character and culture.

Quotes Attributable to Deputy Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece:
“After one of the world’s longest lockdowns, it’s such a thrill to see a global star performing in Bourke Street Mall.

As a former busker who has become an international star, Tones And I understands the joy of live music and how it brings people together.

We want this performance to inspire buskers to come back to our city. We’ve waived busking fees for until June 2021 because we want hundreds more street performers to help activate our streets.”

Quotes Attributable to Tones And I:
“It was so good to get back to my roots and busk where it all started for me.

I’m in music as I love writing & playing live. Busking is as real as it gets and I’m so happy I got to do it again for everyone who has supported me.”

VIRAK
SUGAR (JUNIOR JACK REWORK)
ADESSO MUSIC

Italy’s premiere House Music export Junior Jack’s fifth release on his Adesso Music imprint, see’s his own rework of exciting new talent and French virtuoso Virakirak. The production master, who has created some of the best House records of the early 2000s, delivers a discerning, percussive and deep almost Iberian sound, outlining his commitment to showcasing new artists from around the world.

As a prolific career-focused producer, Junior Jack upholds his varied output, continuing to release tracks that both diversify his sound and reaffirm his talent. His final production for 2020 exemplifies not only his love of the underground, but his persisting ear for complex polyrhythmic grooves that progressively build their own sense of energy.

“Sugar” is built on bold drums, driving undertones and a deeply moving atmosphere that alongside the vocal, peeks with pleasure. Junior Jack creates a soaring sense of mutual sonic togetherness in the track, that’s not always achieved with such antidote when delicate vocal lines meet raw-percussive dance floor drums.

Virak is no stranger to the DJ booth and since starting his career in 2006 has frequented many of the prestigious clubs in France, such as : Les Caves (Courchevel), Le Milk (Montpellier) as well as open format sets a some of the worlds most tropezian bars and beach clubs. Launched alongside his peer Pat BDS, previous Adesso Music label output includes the 2019 debut ‘Flash’ and 2020’s ‘Tecky Dream’ and most recently ‘Klimax’.

The 2020 year has been both unprecedented and challenging in many ways, with artists and music fans feeling the absence of making memories in-person most of all. R3HAB decided to close out the year with his new single "Ones You Miss" to commemorate the strangest year most of us can remember, sending a positive message as we experience the holiday season in uncertain times. Delivering bouncy piano melodies, a breezy bassline, and a velvety topline, "Ones You Miss" is an emotive yet energizing and dancefloor-friendly ode to all of the people that make our life worth living. Despite the global pandemic, R3HAB had no shortage of meaningful releases, including his singles "One More Dance" with Alida, "Am I The Only One" with Astrid S and HRVY, "Family Values" with Nina Nesbitt, "Good Example" with Andy Grammer, to name only a few. Check out R3HAB's inspiration behind his final track of 2020 below: "At the end of a year, we look back and celebrate milestones, but the memories that mean the most to me are always the special moments with my family, friends, and fans. I want this song to let the people I love know that I can't wait to be with them again." - R3HAB Dutch/Moroccan DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough hit remix of Afrojack, Pitbull and Ne-Yo's "Give Me Everything" to his dance anthems, such as "All Around The World (La La La)" and "Lullaby," which have collectively amassed over 600M streams, to his collaborations with the likes of ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Timmy Trumpet and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game. He partnered with Spotify and GATTÜSO to create the first-ever official "mint" single release. In 2016 he founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which passed one billion streams on its catalog within the first two years since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, experimenting with everything from hip-hop to pop through his collaborations. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB is continuing his journey. Keep an eye out for what's next in 2021!
