The Rubens Release Intimate Live Performance Of ‘Time Of My Life’ | Forthcoming Album ‘0202’ – Out Friday 12 February

Today The Rubens have released an intimate, stripped back, reimagined version of their current single ‘Time Of My Life’. Recorded at their studio in Camden, the track shows off the band’s tremendous song writing chops along with Sam Margin’s signature, sundrenched vocal.

“We wrote Time Of My Life before COVID, but we knew at the time that the song had a nostalgic feel to it. Once we started getting emails from year 12 students and teachers, we realised it could be more meaningful. We wanted it to be a homage to Year 12 Class Of 2020.” – The Rubens

Cementing their status as a band that continues to evolve as songwriters and push the boundaries of alternative rock/pop, the band’s fourth album 0202 – featuring recent singles ‘Live In Life’ (nominated for ARIA Song of the Year, ceremony taking place this Wednesday), ‘Heavy Weather’ & current single ‘Time Of My Life’ – is an exciting new chapter for The Rubens and a celebration of the five-piece at their creative peak.

NZ punk rock act VOODOO BLOO returns with new single ‘HA HA OK OK’ from forthcoming debut album JACOBUS

NZ punk rock act VOODOO BLOO returns with new single ‘HA HA OK OK’ from forthcoming debut album JACOBUS

by the partae November 21, 2020
written by the partae

Returning with another strong release for 2020, Wellington-based rock act Voodoo Bloo presents the chaotic new single, ‘Ha Ha Ok Ok’.

Cut from his forthcoming debut album JACOBUS, ‘Ha Ha Ok Ok’ continues to explore some frenetic punk rock territory, as listeners get the opportunity to get further acquainted with one of New Zealand’s urgent young voices.

‘Ha Ha Ok Ok’ exists as one of the oldest recordings that is featured on the Jacobus album, and one that still holds great weight and significance for Voodoo Bloo. As the Jacobus album is an intensely personal one, the music the listener hears on it each has a specific collection of memories attached.

For ‘Ha Ha Ok Ok’, we hear a frenzied and angry narrator unleashing on records. As Voodoo Bloo describes of his music, the artform is a powerful tool and the way it is channeled on this project amps it up to 11.

“This is actually the oldest song on the album, but still very much felt like a story I wanted to tell. This track is about those egomaniacs who you can see are struggling on the inside, but push their emotions away for the chance of popularity and climbing the social ranks.” Voodoo Bloo

Recording the single at PlasticGroove Studios in NZ, Voodoo Bloo and talented videographer Alex Hargreaves decided to bring ‘Ha Ha Ok Ok’ out to life with visuals filmed in Auckland. A strenuous shoot and process to put together, Voodoo Bloo employed the talents of some special friends and guests to bring the energy of ‘Ha Ha Ok Ok’ to the visuals with precision.

“I’ve never been so exhausted, excited and sweaty in my life. All the crew really put themselves through the shit to bring this thing to fruition. We had 10 hours to get all the shots we needed and I honestly still felt like I was in the back of a moving truck for hours after we finished, but it’s an experience I will never ever forget.” Voodoo Bloo

Musically, Voodoo Bloo’s work takes in inspiration from across a wide range of sounds; from more indie stylings like Neutral Milk Hotel and Car Seat Headrest, to the harder sounds of System Of A Down and Marilyn Manson, the foundation of sounds Jacobus has been built upon is a strong one.

PRAISE FOR VOODOO BLOO

“If you’ve got an appetite for alt-rock done right, then your new favourite band might just be Wellington’s exceptional outfit, Voodoo Bloo.”
Tone Deaf

“Driven by growling guitars and vocals to match, the new single from Wellington based artist Voodoo Bloo proves a hectic introduction to this young talent.”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – K.G. & Live In SF ’16 OUT NOW!

NEW LIVE ALBUM AND CONCERT FILM ‘LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO ’16’ OUT NOW!

~ NEW SINGLE ‘INTRASPORT’ OUT NOW!

In follow up to singles Honey, Some Of Us, Straws In The Wind, and Automation; King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard unveil their newest full length ‘K.G.’, their sixteenth since they formed in 2010. In the wake of a global pandemic, it’s a collection of songs that saw the six members of the band retreating to their own homes, to compose and record remotely. A return to microtonal territory, this 10 track opus sees the band paint from a palette that extends far beyond the musical colours of western rock. An album best described as a pure distillation of the King Gizzard sound, one that cherry picks the best aspects of previous albums and contorts them into new shapes, via defiantly non-Western rock scales. There’s walk-on theme song ‘K.G.L.W’, the celestial disco-funk of ‘Intrasport’, the righteous life-giving staccato rock of ‘Ontology’, epic stoner-sludge closer ‘The Hungry Wolf Of Fate’, which ends the album in an abrupt burst of white noise. All come together to represent the next-level of the expanding Gizz sound.

‘K.G.’ is both a stand-alone work and also part of a bigger musical picture. More news on that shall be forthcoming.. but fans of the group know by now that King Gizzard don’t do things by halves. For now, check out ‘Intrasport’ – the final single from the album. Shot inside the studio apartment of frequent collaborator John Angus Stewart, the clip is an intimate yet panoramic capture of what it means to feel loneliness at a party, even though you’re surrounded by people. Watch here.

Just under a month after delivering their award-winning 2016 album Nonagon Infinity, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard took the stage at San Francisco’s The Independent for a set both wildly frenetic and meticulously executed. ‘Live in San Francisco ’16’ captures an extraordinary moment in the band’s increasingly storied history, a 13-song spectacular likely to leave every listener awestruck and adrenalised. With nearly half the setlist made up of Nonagon Infinity tracks, ‘Live in San Francisco ’16’ unfolds with the same exquisitely controlled chaos King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard brought to that arguable masterpiece. “2016 was peak tightness for Gizz,” notes frontman Stu Mackenzie. “Around this time we were really into tightly composed sets, and the show was like one long song—everything linked, everything planned. We threw that idea out the window later on, but this live record is a great document of that moment in our collective psyche.” A double treat for fans, you can also stream and buy the accompanying ‘Live In San Francisco 16’ concert film via Vimeo. Check out Evil Death Roll from the film here.

Artists: Nicky Romero
Title: Nights With You EP (Festival Mix + Harrison Remix)
Label: Universal Music

Download / Stream

Following Nicky Romero‘s debut on Universal Music with “Nights With You,” the dance music mogul has released additional versions of the milestone single – his own festival mix as well as a special remix by UK producer Harrison. The alternative interpretations explore Nicky‘s famous progressive house sound and Harrison’s deep and cinematic style. The festival mix incorporates an energetic, bouncy bassline that begs to be played at the mainstage, evoking fond memories of live events for every dance music fan. In Harrison‘s rendition, deep undulating sounds add an element of darkness to “Nights With You,” while dreamy instrumentals give it an emotive feel. Nicky Romero and Universal Music come together again to enhance and increase reach on Nicky Romero‘s sound around the globe.

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as ‘Legacy‘ (with Krewella) and #1 single ‘I Could Be The One‘ (with Avicii), Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with David Guetta, Mike Williams & Amba Shepherd, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, DallasK & XYLØ, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki & Kiiara to remixes for the likes of Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve during these unprecedented times in the music industry. He recently debuted his ultra-modern “Another World” live stream concept this summer and now has proved again his ability to turn into gold everything he touches.

UK talent Harrison had his breakthrough in 2013 when he worked with David Guetta and Glowinthedark on “Ain’t a Party” single and has been going full speed ahead ever since. His dynamic style has earned him support from the biggest names in dance music, such as Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, and Avicii. With over 2M monthly streams on Spotify alone, Harrison is ready to join the ranks of electronic music’s finest. Keep an eye out for more new music from both Nicky Romero and Harrison.

Canadian Duo 401 WST Blends Hip-Hop and House on Their Debut “Our House” EP

by the partae November 21, 2020
written by the partae

Artist: 401 WST
Title: Our House EP
Label: Kyngdom Records

Canadian duo 401 WST throws it back to the ’80s with the epic debut of their 3-track “Our House” EP, composed of recently released “Do The Damn Thang” and 2 brand new songs that fuse hip-hop sounds and house music. The DJ/producer partners create a seamless fusion of genres on “Real Quick” and its accompanying music video; classic hip-hop rhythms are complemented by a deep rolling bassline and kickdrums to add an electronic flair. “Alive” follows suit of “Do The Damn Thang” and is perhaps the more house-influenced of the two new tracks, melding a tech-house bassline and deeply reverberating synths with hedonistic lyrics about partying and hitting the dance floor – a novel concept in the global pandemic. The “Our House” EP evokes memories of Chicago in the ’80s when hip-hop and house were at their heyday in the underground. As Black musicians, the duo places very high importance on taking it back to the essence of where house music began and paying homage to the originators of it all. 401 WST‘s sound is raw and unfiltered, providing a breath of fresh air in the age of autotune, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

International DJ 4Korners and emerging producer Ashton Adams come together to form 401 WST, which is named after the highway that connects their Canadian hometowns of Toronto and Cambridge. Prior to the project, 4Korners experienced global success and has performed at the Cannes Film Festival, London Fashion Week, Formula 1 in Abu Dhabi, and the Olympic Games, among others. He has also been awarded the prestigious titles of Canadian DJ Of The Year and an NBA Championship as Official DJ of the Toronto Raptors. Ashton Adams‘ production versatility stems from his exposure to a wide variety of genres. From the classic hip hop sound of 50 Cent and Lil Wayne, all the way to heavy metal bands such as August Burns Red and Under Oath. As 401 WST, the two artists have set out to create music that focuses less on commercialization and more on the old school values of bringing people together and having a good time. With such a unique sound and feel-good approach, “Our House” is the beginning of an exciting journey for 401 WST.

DUE OUT DECEMBER 4 VIA BIG NOISE

Punk-rock icons Goldfinger have announced their highly anticipated album Never Look Back will be released December 4, 2020 via Big Noise. This release marks the official return of original guitarist Charlie Paulson to the band, joining John Feldmann, Mike Herrera, Philip Sneed and Nick Gross.

It can be pre-ordered/pre-saved at http://ffm.to/gfneverlookback.

Fans got an early taste of this forthcoming album with last month’s release of “Wallflower”, which can be streamed today here: https://ffm.to/gfwallflower.

“’Wallflower’ was the last song I wrote for our upcoming album,” Feldmann shared in an exclusive interview with Alternative Press. “It’s coming out later this year on my own label (Big Noise) and that just is a very full circle moment that I am so proud of.”

Goldfinger formed in 1994 and has since been regarded as a contributor to the revitalization of ska music’s popularity in the mid-1990s before leading the charge on the 2000’s pop-punk movement. Outside of their music, Goldfinger has always been active and outspoken about a variety of political and social issues, especially animal rights.

Fans can stay tuned to Goldfinger’s socials for more information very soon.

On April 24 and October 16th, 2021 there will be simultaneous youth-led global climate concerts in over 40 countries, led by members of Fridays For Future youth climate groups who organise the school strikes, with artists, activists and scientists taking to the global stage to fight for climate justice. 7.6 million in 7,500 cities across the world took to the streets to demand climate action in September 2019, yet leaders still fail to act with the necessary urgency. Music has the power to unite people. Climate Live will harness the universal language of music to: ENGAGE: enlarge the global movement by engaging a new audience through music. EDUCATE: raise awareness of the challenges faced today by people on the frontlines of ecological breakdown, as well as those forecast by scientists for the future. EMPOWER: pressure world leaders to take action to combat the climate crisis with a focus on COP26. Each concert is being planned with sustainability as a top priority, working with events professionals, venues, artists and local authorities to strive to make the events as sustainable as possible. Mirroring the strikes, events will be on both large and small scales. The race to safeguard the future of this planet has begun, so now we must come together. As Greta Thunberg, 17, from Sweden declares, “To change everything, we need everyone.” Founder, Frances Fox, 19, from the UK said, “I started Climate Live in Spring 2019, after being inspired by an interview in which Brian May said there should be a Live Aid for the climate crisis. I thought this was a brilliant idea to engage more young people in the movement, with our own spin, so immediately started messaging activists from all over the world!” Audiences attending Climate Live will come away with a feeling of empowerment and the tools to engage in the climate movement. 2021 is a key year for climate action. We have exactly one year until the UN COP26 conference, when governments will have to renew their Paris Agreement pledges. Climate Live calls for these to be more ambitious to meet the necessary 1.5°C targets. Their question to world leaders is - “Can you hear us yet?" Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC who played a key role in the 2015 Paris Agreement, states, “there is no doubt that young people, informed by science, have brought the climate crisis to the attention of leaders from all sectors. It is now our generation’s responsibility to protect what we love from the damages of climate change by following up on promises with the necessary actions in this decade, to fulfil the goals of the Paris Agreement. I applaud our brilliant young people for stepping up again to hold leaders to account in the lead up to COP26 in 2021, when countries must come together to show we are on track for a resilient future. Our young people have asked whether we can hear them. It is time to demonstrate that we are truly listening.” Glass Animals’ Joe Seaward urges, “time is running out for the planet as we know it. We must act now if we’re going to save it. The youth activists who are standing up need help and those with a voice have a responsibility to use it” Climate Live is an opportunity for young people across the world to make their voices heard. Mitzi Jonelle Tan, 23, from the Philippines (Convener of Youth Advocates For Climate Action Philippines) says, “we have just experienced four typhoons in the span of a month. I had to sit in the dark without electricity, not able to go home because the roads to our house were flooded up to the second floor of houses. This is the climate crisis, this is why we need action. We are the second most vulnerable country to the impacts of the climate crisis in the world. It's a scary thing and we desperately need more people out on the streets if we want to see change. Climate Live is the perfect way to do that.” “Climate Live is beyond just music. The climate crisis isn’t just an issue of the far-off future, it is today and we are experiencing the impacts right now. We need to act now.” Kevin Mtai, 24, Kenya, Founder of Kenya Environmental Activists Network. “Climate Live will give a voice to those most affected by climate change and to the millions of young people concerned about the future of our planet.” Timi Barabas, 17, New Zealand. “Climate Live is critical at a time when the climate crisis has become less prominent in the public eye.” - Andrea Manning, 22, USA. “Hope is in the people, in the movement, which is getting bigger and bigger, but we need more people, and Climate Live is the opportunity for this to happen.” Nicole Becker, 19, Argentina, Co-Founder of Jóvenes Por El Clima Argentina. Frank Iero and the Future Violence aka The Future Violents have announced that their new Heaven is a Place, This is a Place EP will be released on Friday January 15, 2021 via UNFD. Serving as a companion piece to 2019’s critically acclaimed full length, Barriers, the EP is split into two distinct movements.

Side A reveals the true meaning of “Violence”, a song title Iero has teased on bass drums in all his Future Violents music videos. Indeed, it’s opening gambit of “You got so sick, I thought I’d die, you got so down, I couldn’t get high” before the chorus refrain of “Your violence feels like kisses to me, your silence makes it harder to breathe, your distance feels like I’m not enough…I need your touch” sees Iero at his most scathing and damaged. Never have these words felt more relevant as they do now. This ferocity and redemptive anger continues into “Sewer Wolf “ where in the chorus Iero professes, “I come alive forged in fire, My love will break these chains built from pain, they can’t hold me down.”

In total contrast to side A, side B finds the band more delicate and thoughtful, complete with soaring soundscapes before the final crescendo of ‘Record Ender’. All while paying beautiful tribute to Iero’s journey with The Future Violents and its members musical fortitude.

In 2016, Iero and his guitar-playing brother in law, Evan Nestor, were involved in a brutal motor vehicle accident in Australia – one they barely survived. During the process of recovery, the REM song, ‘Losing My Religion‘ started making pivotal appearances in unusual places / weird circumstance and the mantra repeated itself as time went on.

When Iero resumed touring, post accident in 2017, one of the members of the support band, Kayleigh Goldsworthy, struck a chord both literally and proverbially.

Iero notes: “From the first show I was completely impressed with her musicianship and by touring together I realised she was also a rad human being who I desperately wanted to write and play music with. In my mind she was already in my next band, I just had to write the music, name the band, find the other musicians, oh and of course ask her. But during that first tour together we got to talking about how she played the mandolin and how we shared a love for R.E.M., and more specifically ‘Losing my Religion’. So, on the last night of tour in San Francisco we found an empty room/hallway/stairwell type place and made an iPhone voice memo demo of the song. It felt like magic and that was the moment I was convinced this couldn’t be the only thing we did together.”

Goldsworthy’s band was subsequently invited to tour the UK & Europe and in London, a BBC session at the legendary Maida Vale studios culminated in Iero, Nestor, and Goldsworthy recording their unique take on ‘Losing’ amidst analogue history and English rain. The magic in the air was palpable and despite being on a sold out tour for an existing album (Parachutes) everyone in the room knew that this was the starting point of something new and truly great.

Iero has always employed a new band name for each stage of his solo career (The Cellabration / The Patience / The Patients / The Future Violents / The Future Violence) and there surely can be no doubt that as ‘Losing My Religion’ is the start of the band then ‘Record Ender’, the closing track, is the bookmark conclusion as Iero sings “Maybe we fooled them all, at least I hope we did.”

Originally tracked at the same time as Barriers by Steve Albini, Heaven was finished and mixed by long-term friend and collaborator Steve Evetts in late 2020. Describing the Steve ‘squared’ sound as sonic perfection for these songs, Iero is quick to point out that this is not merely leftovers from Barriers but very much a main course.

“The Future Violents was the perfect band at the perfect time for me. The creativity flowed through us like rapids and we didn’t stop writing because we ran out of inspiration…it was just time to go to the studio. In fact I was still writing at the studio, but I allowed myself the luxury of 14 songs on the record leaving 3 to survive in the shadows. Lying in wait. I knew I wanted them to see the light, it was just a matter of how and when.”

Elaborating on the origins of the EP, Iero comments, “The title of the EP actually comes from the night before we started recording Barriers at Electrical Audio in Chicago. The band went out to eat and get drinks at a local Tiki bar called, Lost Lake. On the menu that night there was a drink called Heaven is a place/This is the place.” shares Iero on the meaning behind the EP title. “I love when the universe gives you gifts like that. You just have to be in tune to your surroundings. The name struck me as clever and I started to think about how changing one word in that title meant something way more profound to me. Heaven is a place, if you believe in that sort of thing…It is the reward at the end of a long hard journey of fighting the good fight and living your life to whatever standards you hold dear. But it’s just a place. And so is this…This is a place, the earthly realm, miraculous on so many levels but also just a place. The difference is you and your perception.”

Off the back of two sold-out shows in Sydney and the 2020 J Award for Best Australian Music Video Of The Year overnight, ascendant Bowraville-born rapper Tasman Keith today shares his latest single, ‘CONFIDENT’, and announces the forthcoming release of his debut mixtape To Whom It May Concern due this year. Listen HERE.

Muscular and minimal, ‘CONFIDENT’ leans into the trunk-rattling, bare-bones style of previous single ‘BILLY BAD AGAIN’. With twisted, nocturnal synths, skittish percussion, and a late beat switch leading to a raucous, half-time climax, ‘CONFIDENT’ is not the first time Keith’s music can compare to Kendrick Lamar’s. What makes the comparison all the more apparent is Tasman’s finely-tuned craft; a flow that moves between leisurely, unapologetic aplomb and razor-sharp lucidity, oozing tenacity, perseverance, and an elemental self-assuredness no matter which gear he’s operating in. The result is goosebump inducing furore.

“Over the three verses in this song, I’m speaking to three different things,” Tasman shares. “In the first verse, I’m speaking on the confidence within myself. The second is me showing my confidence to the suits in the industry, and the third is showing it to racists/bigots. The third verse is also a moment where all three things are addressed in one verse.”

2020 has seen Tasman’s profile continue to rise through collaborations and guest features, appearing on Jimmy Nice’s ‘Same Water’, Northern Territory producer Kuya James’ powerful single ‘No Country’, including its own stripped-back version ‘No Country (Piano In F Minor)‘, and alongside Jessica Mauboy on ‘First Nation’, the second single lifted from The Makarrata Project, Midnight Oil’s first studio album in over 18 years. Tasman capped yet another banner year with his debut TV performance twice on the second season of The ABC‘s live music series, The Sound.

Despite ‘CONFIDENT‘ being only his second solo release of the year this far, Tasman Keith continues to live up to its title – and then some.

‘CONFIDENT’ by Tasman Keith is out now, buy/stream it here.

Melbourne singer-songwriter and producer Jerome Farah today shares his latest single, ‘Vibrate‘. Listen and watch HERE.

After his electrifying, politically-charged and compelling debut, ‘I Can’t Breathe‘, and surveying the hurt of racial stereotypes on the contemplative second single, ‘Mikey Might‘, Jerome takes his dexterous, genre-melding sound to comparatively lighter and poppier ends on just his third solo single to date. Self-assured and justified in its own saltiness, ‘Vibrate’ addresses an ex-lover, reveling in the satisfaction that comes from having moved onto something better while the other has stayed in the same place. On ‘Vibrate‘, as always, Farah is chasing honesty both through and within his music, whether that’s speaking to police brutality, the hurt of racial stereotypes or a spurned ex.

Mixing looped, chanting vocals with his free-ranging flow and an insistent instrumental, ‘Vibrate‘ demonstrates that Jerome plans to approach his career with the same boundaryless attitude with which he produces and writes his own music, having covered more artistic ground and taken more surprising-but-profitable risks in this opening stanza than most artists his age. Completing the release is the music video, shot during Stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne with the help of just one other person – watch BELOW.

Prior to stepping into the spotlight as one of Australian music’s breakout stars of 2020, the 27-year-old Jerome Farah was an APRA-Award winning, ARIA nominated songwriter and a much-sought-after collaborator, having previously worked with Tash Sultana on ‘Willow Tree‘, Baker Boy (‘Marryuna‘, ‘Mr La-Di-Da-Di‘, ‘Meditjin‘), KIAN on ‘Waiting‘, Tkay Maidza‘s ‘You Sad‘, plus Adrian Eagle and Dallas Woods. A stylistic polymath, Jerome’s fusion of neo-soul, R&B and alternative rap threads together styles and influences informed by his multicultural upbringing.

His first two solo singles landed like dynamite across the Australian music landscape, receiving full rotation on triple j, as well as garnering praise from NME Australia, Acclaim, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and more, Jerome Farah’s debut singles have so far amassed a combined over one million streams worldwide and featured on playlists ranging from RADAR AU & NZ to Alt Rap, Breaking R&B, Fresh Finds and more.

‘Vibrate‘ by Jerome Farah is out now, buy/stream it here.

Thick as Thieves assemble 140 music industry creatives to complete marathon for charity

by the partae November 20, 2020
written by the partae

The team at Thick as Thieves is synonymous with dance music events in Melbourne. Still, over the past decade, they added another page to their portfolio: organising charity drives for The Fred Hollows Foundation. Despite their efforts raising over $800,000 for the foundation, their current Quick As Thieves campaign might be their most ambitious drive to date. On Saturday, 5 December, a team of 140 music industry creatives will run a half or full marathon (42,2 km) spanning the coastal loop. (Six of those contestants will complete an ultra-marathon which is 63,3 km). Not only has everyone involved pledged to fundraise $1000, but for many, it will be their first time competing in an endurance race.

Since 2015, we’ve had a small team doing an annual charity drive by entering various fitness events like Coastrek,’ explains Mike Toner, the Thick as Thieves Director. ‘We’ve probably run, cycled and swam over 1,500km so far – all in the name of charity.’ This year, when Toner cast the net to assemble a team, he was blown away by the interest. One hundred and forty willing participants came forward, eager to take on the challenge of fundraise $1k each by completing a half or full marathon. ‘It was an incredible response, and a lot of the interest came from the music industry sector’. Marathon fit DJs? Prepare yourself for early morning DJs training for a marathon instead of leaving Revolver. ‘Ha, all the team members are very excited. We started a wholesome WhatsApp group where everyone is highly supportive of each other’s efforts.’

The interest has indeed come from very surprising quarters. Included in this year’s race is Benson, Melbourne’s festival conquering and the self-confessed bad boy who ‘your parents love to hate’, global club chart-topping producer Torren Foot, and Thick as Thieves family members Jacob Malmo and Mike Callander. Information about the campaign even reached Sydney, bolstering local creatives to join the cause. This lead to many early morning runs amongst industry insiders Ming Gan, Scott Robertson, Paul Stix, Graham Cordery and Ben Ashton.

However, due to COVID uncertainty, the Sydney chapter completed their marathon on 22 September. ‘None of us had ever done a full marathon before,’ recalls Fuzzy Director Ming Gan.‘ When we first started training for this, I had rarely run more than 5km in the past, so the aim for me was a half marathon.’ In the end, the whole team’s determination paid off, with Cordery finishing a half marathon and the rest a full marathon. And for their efforts, they raised $15,000 for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

However, as Mike explains, the charity drive’s most famous supporter hails from Frankston. ‘I started jogging with a good friend Chris Coe who happens to be a studio engineer working with Carl Cox. When he told Carl about the project, the legend was immediately interested in helping out. So we asked Carl if he would be up for delivering the prizes on the day which he agreed to.’ Further fundraising motivation comes in the form of technology brand Pioneer. The DJ industry global leader will award the biggest fundraiser with a brand new V10 mixer valued at $6,000.

Current estimates have this year’s event set to raise over $250,000 of which 100% of proceeds will go to the Fred Hollows Foundation. Aside from raising money for such a great cause, Mike notes that a by-product of past runs has been the significant benefits to mental health and physical well being for participants. ‘Especially during COVID, this run has given many participants something to focus on.’

Sydney-via-Boston rapper Raj Mahal today releases the dark and frenetic EP, RAW DAWG. With the release comes with visual for ‘KAPPA‘. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

With this release, Raj Mahal is staunch, firm and intense, traversing an array of sonic bounds. Joining the hard-edged ‘GLIMPSE‘ and minimalist ‘GET ME FROM‘ includes the gothic driven ‘GUARANTEE‘ and hymnal backed ‘2DOECOO‘, before shifting to the electronica laden ‘BREAKS‘ contrasted with the trap heavy ‘PASTRANAK‘ and ‘EZAQLEE‘. ‘DUCHOVY‘ rallies the RAW DAWG journey together, with a sample of Raj reflecting, “When you’re down you’ll never be able to compare yourself to when you’re up, but later you’ll completely forget about that shit and move onto the next.” Earnest in its entirety, RAW DAWG is a display of the stark mental state that birthed it. Throughout, Mahal’s message is clear – the long time hustler for his craft is on a mission for stardom.

For the Boston born rapper, relocating to Australia was a decision made to find himself both emotionally and musically. Inspired by his uncles, key members of Boston’s small hip hop scene, Raj Mahal began rapping as a teenager, but his primary focus was on pursuing a career in football. Before long, with his family’s influence and an unsuspecting introduction to a producer several oceans away, Mahal put football on the backburner and took the plunge. No longer holding back with his drone laced blows, Mahal hopes to craft a lane for hip hop’s formidable storytelling origins to return to the local spotlight.

Reflecting on his journey with the release of this EP, Raj Mahal shares: “RAW DAWG was a self care mechanism that helped get me out of a dark place this year. It made me remember who I am and what I’m about to do and I don’t plan on forgetting that ever again.”

RAW DAWG is Raj’s first major release since 2017’s, Neva Safe, following on from a string of standalone singles that has seen his stock skyrocket in his adopted country’s hip-hop scene. In between then releases Mahal has collaborated with Triple One, Nerve, Dro Carey, Yibby and more, has performed as one quarter of Savour the Rations, his group with Gibrillah and Domba, and has opened for Wiley, YG and Smokepurpp on their Australian tours. Now with RAW DAWG, Mahal arrives with guts and soul-baring faith, in an exercise of zero restraint.

RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM FIRST CONTACT, REVEAL INCREDIBLE LIVE PERFORMANCE FILM FOR ‘OUT OF TOUCH’ + PERFORMING SOLD-OUT SHOWS IN QLD

by the partae November 20, 2020
written by the partae

Lastlings today reveal their lush twelve track debut album First Contact (out now via Liberation Records). With anticipation heightening from one single to the next over the past year, siblings Josh and Amy Dowdle have finally revealed the LP in its entirety. First Contact explores the senses and emotions that arise when encountering experiences for the first time.

Coinciding with the release of the album, the duo also unveil the epic live performance film for their latest single ‘Out Of Touch’. Shot on location at a series of stunning landscapes throughout South Australia and Queensland, and working alongside Sydney-based director and creative Dylan Duclos, the video sees Josh and Amy exploring an otherworldly realm.

A first brush with love, an introduction to the darkness of disappointment, one’s inaugural feeling of hope amidst a world devoid of meaning – these are the experiential lenses through which First Contact is best heard and felt. It is this sense of narrative immersion that stands at the center of the project, always connecting back to life’s milestones from one’s first breath to last.
“First Contact is all the moments we experience for the first time, how special they are and how important they are in shaping us as people. It is about those beautiful moments when we feel love for the first time, a child taking its first steps or travelling to a new destination. It’s also about the sombre moments in our life where we have lost something or someone for the first time and how we grow and change from these. We hope that this album sparks all the beautiful and important memories, feelings and emotions that you felt when you experienced something for the first time.” – Lastlings on the meaning behind First Contact

The album opens with the love-swept vocals of ‘Deja Vu’, cascading into ‘Take My Hand’ which presents a chase scene energy as fit for dancefloors as it is for science fiction’s past. ‘Out of Touch’ showcases the organic production that primes the album for mainstages worldwide, with delicate guitar licks proclaiming the duo’s destiny for live-electronic stardom. ‘False Reactions’, with its building melodic potency, ushers the listener through the precipice of the album where the intricacies of ‘Last Breath’ and ‘No Time’ demonstrate just why this band has truly arrived. It is at the record’s finale that its meaning truly takes form, with ‘I’ve Got You’ offering a timely look into the artists’ urgency to check in on those they love.Partially written at a remote snow-capped house in tranquil Aomori, a small fishing village on the northern side of Japan and their grandparents’ hometown, Lastlings weave elements of Japanese landscapes and cultural touch points throughout First Contact. The album also has clear recalls to their cinematic, science fiction muses: Blade Runner, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Studio Ghibli films.

Lastlings’ deep sense of artistry and determination have set them apart across today’s musical landscape. Championed by Grammy-nominated trio RÜFÜS DU SOL, Lastlings has been warmly welcomed to the band’s own label, Rose Avenue Records. Since then, they’ve worked with producers like SG Lewis, remixed by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, and toured with industry giants like Two Door Cinema Club, Bob Moses, and Glass Animals. Together with their three piece live setup featuring Josh on keys and guitar, a live drummer, and Amy on vocals, they have played career-defining sold-out shows alongside RÜFÜS DU SOL at Colorado’s Red Rocks, Los Angeles State Historic Park and many other renowned venues. Their latest single ‘Out Of Touch’ can currently be heard on the airwaves of triple j or found across a myriad of Apple Music and Spotify playlists globally.

It is with an inquisitive and open mind that listeners can find meaning at every turn as they experience Lastlings’ ever growing universe through the emotive soundscapes of First Contact.
