Music News

Where are you currently based?  I’m recently moved to Enmore NSW  How did you first start playing music?  I played piano from about 6 but never fully fell in love with it until I first picked up the guitar. I  started hiding in the music rooms at school during lunch & the music teacher would do group guitar  lessons. I eventually got more interested in classical guitar & played in a bunch of school bands. I  then went on to do a bachelor in guitar. I’ve been writing songs since I picked up the guitar.  What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?  I’ve been living in Bowral for a chunk of this year since we got evicted. I used the time to work on  my skills as a producer. Before covid struck everyones plans out the window like many people I’d  planned to spend most of the year traveling to work with new collaborators overseas. I’ve done a  few zoom writing sessions with some people I’d planned on meeting. I’ve been working on finishing   my EP & always working on writing more songs. The start of the year had a lot of ups & downs with  feeling fairly isolated in Bowral but I’m making up for my lack of socialising now that i’m back in  Sydney.  Your new single The Eviction Song, is out now, what influenced the sound and song writing?  I’ve always had a broad taste in music & find it hard to narrow down my influences. Some of my  favourite artists are Wolf Alice, The Japanese House & Rex Orange County. I’ve also made a  playlist of artists that i’ve been listening to this year> https://open.spotify.com/playlist/ 1AtMA91E9cX4GtyA6rVmoZ?si=-NPsDB3bTr2TzDHMx96pTw  How did you go about writing The Eviction Song?  I do a lot of writing with one of my close friends Oscar Sharah. We wrote The Eviction Song in the  studio in Coogee where we wrote a lot of the EP. We started out with the opening riff & it was  originally going to be a vocal melody & had completely different lyrics. We then went back to  writing with just an acoustic guitar until we had come up with the main melodies & lyrics. I always  prefer stripping back the session to just guitar to make sure I like the song as an acoustic before  we dive into the production elements.  Where and when did you record and who with?  I’m pretty sure started writing the song late December last year after I’d received the first eviction  notice. We recorded most of the track in Coogee in the same session that we wrote it.  What programs/instruments did you use?  The main guitar is recorded on a nylon guitar through an iPhone. The opening riff was recorded on  Juno. A lot of the soundscape elements are fuzzy guitarmonies. I can never help myself with  chucking harmony stacks on the guitars & BV arrangements. Oscar plays live drums on majority of  the EP. We are going to film us pulling apart the stems & chatting about the production in more  detail in a couple weeks so keep an eye out. How did the concept for the music video come about?  I wanted to include my old housemates and my friends who’d experienced our parties before the  eviction so I just got some old ass video cameras & started taking them out everywhere. I’ve got a  shit tonne of left over footage that will probably come out sometime soon also (but some of it will  never see the light of day lol). I knew I wanted to shoot one of the scenes in my bedroom because  we just moved into a new place & I was excited that I could fit a couch in my room. Lewis Clark  (director) & I went to a party store the day before & got excited by all the balloons & streamers so  that’s how the backdrop came about. Lewis & I brainstormed over coffee to come with the  aesthetic and locations that we thought would best suit the song.  Where and when did you film and who did you work with?  A lot of the filming was unplanned so I think that’s how we captured so many heartfelt moments  with my friends & housemates. Maybe I just think the dadcam footage of my friends is adorable  because I know them but I’m going to treasure the shots in this video & it will remind me of this   stage of my life forever. Most of the footage in shot walking around Enmore & in my bedroom. The  video was directed by a close friend Lewis Clark (Mel Blue) & we had another close friend Jimmy  Heathwood (Bronte Public Housing) assisting on handy cam & everything else that he could assist  with on the day. I think it made it a lot easier to show my real personality with only two friends  behind the camera having a laugh.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the music video?  This was definitely the least challenging video I’ve shot to date. Lewis had a super clear plan for  the day so the whole shoot was pretty chill. We had a few drinks when Georgia arrived to ‘sleep’ on  the couch & then went out to trivia afterwards to look through the footage. We came so far last that  they forgot to call our name in the rankings & gave us free sympathy beer.  Who are you listening to at the moment?  I’ve been delving into Dominic Fike’s new album. I can’t stop listening to Caroline Polachek. I’m  always going back to the old Gorillaz albums & love some 90s grunge.  What do you like to do away from music?  I love a long walk & eating a whole cabbage to try and heal my body after the house parties. I don’t  do a lot away from music but it doesn’t sound super musical when I try to practise trumpet & drums  which are my newest hobbies.  You have some upcoming shows, how do you prepare for live shows and what can we expect?  I’ve had a couple prep sessions to organise stems with my guitarist & MD Ryan. After that I brought  in my band & backing vocalists for a rehearsal & hope the songs all come back to them. It’s been a  while since we’ve done a full band show & we’ve never done the band with live backing vocals but  I think it’s sounding pretty sick.  We’ll be playing duo at The Hard Rock Cafe on the 12th of Nov & full band at Kelly’s on the 26th of  Nov.  What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?  I’ll be working on some vids for the rest of the EP & doing the final touches on mixing & getting it  mastered. I’m also working on the next 2 EPs after that & producing/ writing for some other artists. Favourite food and place to hang out?  I recently 3rd wheeled a date at Emma’s Snack Bar with my pal’s Pat & Leah. The food was next  level & the company was also OK. I do love to hang out at Vic on the Park & haven’t joked about  how it feels like I live there.   https://www.instagram.com/lolascottmusic/   https://www.facebook.com/lolascottmusic   https://www.lolascott.com.au/

INDIE-POP DARLING LOLA SCOTT REVEALS LUSH NEW SINGLE: “THE EVICTION SONG”

by the partae November 2, 2020
written by the partae

With a number of unique and addictive indie-pop singles to her name, Lola Scott is proving herself as a creative force in the Australian music scene. The classically trained guitarist is a self-proclaimed band-geek gone rogue, who has transitioned from touring internationally as a session musician, to relentlessly unleashing her solo project on the world.

New single “The Eviction Song” is a perfect distillation of everything there is to love about Lola Scott. Her cheeky, sarcastic lyrics unfurl a story of misty nostalgia, combining effortlessly warm and luscious alt-pop vocals with experimental, synth-driven production. The track is our first taste of Scott’s foray into new territory, which has seen her place a stronger focus on having fun with music and finding her true voice.

LISTEN TO “THE EVICTION SONG” HERE

“Earlier this year, my housemates and I were evicted from our house. We’re not sure what for, but can only assume the many house parties (leading to many noise complaints) didn’t help,” said Lola Scott. “When I wrote this song it was my 6th move in the last 4 years; and this house was by far one of most chaotic share-houses I’ve ever lived in. The song developed from the idea that when you live with a bunch of wild cards, and have the type of landlord who hoards things under the floorboards, you can never please everyone.

Despite this, the good times always outweighed the petty arguments. I found some of my most treasured friendships & made life-long memories. The more emotional breakdowns we faced together as housemates, the closer we got.. And luckily the eviction did not kill our friendships, and a couple of us have found a new place to continue the benders that probably got us kicked out in the first place.”

Beginning to play guitar and write songs at the age of eight, Lola Scott was spending lunchtimes in the music rooms for the majority of her school life. This dedicated honing of her musical craft over the years eventually led to her attaining a Bachelor’s degree in guitar, and Scott subsequently began her career as a session musician playing in friends’ bands throughout University, even landing a European tour and various local tours.

Since the launch of her solo project in 2018, Scott has delivered highly-praised singles with mind-blowing consistency, releasing three hook-laced singles in 2019 including “Crowded Conscience”, which saw spot plays on triple j, and “Cyclone Weather”, which was added to full rotation on tastemaker station FBi Radio in Sydney. Lola launched into 2020 stronger than ever, with triple j-favourite “Take Me Back”, which received praise from Purple Sneakers, LeFutureWave, CloutCloutClout, Music Feeds, Indietronica and more.

Evoking comparisons to alt-pop trailblazers Maggie Rogers, Wolf Alice and Emma Louise (Rex Orange County, King Princess), and with more music to come in 2020, Lola Scott has cemented a truly original sound and a formidable reputation in the Sydney music scene.

“The Eviction Song” is available on all platforms now.

Tour Dates:

Thursday 12th November  – Great Southern Nights  @ Hard Rock Cafe Sydney Monday 26th November 26th – Great Southern Nights @ Kelly’s Newtown

Praise for Lola Scott

“Lola Scott has just three singles to her name, but the world she’s building is formidable. Pulling a luscious pop sound and matching each tune with a resoundingly cinematic music video, it’s clear this artist isn’t fond of anything but perfection.” – Happy Mag

“Occasionally, an artist presents themselves as a completely realised project just a handful of songs into their career, and Lola Scott is one of those artists.” – PileRats

“Rising star Lola Scott is one act you need to have on your radar… (Take Me Back) is unashamed pop, and its power is in Lola‘s no-holds-barred approach, leaving absolutely everything on the floor with a stunning vocal performance to complement her intimate songwriting.” – Purple Sneakers

“Need to give this one its moment – (cyclone weather) is a gorgeous one from Lola! It veers towards breaking point and you’ll be on the hook the whole time.”
– Dave Ruby Howe (triple j)

HELADO NEGRO Signs to 4AD Releases Neil Young cover ‘Lotta Love’

Helado Negro, the creative moniker of Roberto Carlos Lange, is the latest addition to the 4AD roster, and today, he releases a cover of Neil Young‘s ‘Lotta Love’. The track features Flock Of Dimes as well as backing vocals by Devendra Banhart and Adron and piano by Trey Pollard.

This new version of ‘Lotta Love’ was recorded with the upcoming U.S. election and global crises on Roberto Lange‘s mind. “I was captivated by the song’s sincerity and wondered how to make a version that compelled you to step closer to the words,” he explains. “I wanted it to be hymnal and spiritual outside of religion. I interpreted the theme of the song to be about protection. How do we protect each other? Creating this version helped me find some sonic respite and hopefully it does the same for others.”

Raised in South Florida and now based in Brooklyn, NY, Roberto has spent much of this year’s quarantine in Marfa, Texas. He had already been scheduled to be working on a multimedia project at Ballroom Marfa. Kite Symphony is the result, it is a new collaboration with the visual artist Kristi Sword. The artists created a non-linear and impressionistic style film and live score, as well as a sculptural work that explores the landscape of West Texas through wind, sound, and light. The Kite Symphony EP was released this past summer.

Helado Negro – ‘Lotta Love’ is out now via 4AD / Remote Control Records.

“Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster make dreampop that pulls from groovy ’70s soft rock and R&B, exotica, psych, orch-pop and more.”
BrooklynVegan

Taiwanese soul-psych outfit Sunset Rollercoaster today share new album Soft Storm, listen HERE.

Says the band about the new album, “Typhoons hitting Taiwan during our summers are common childhood memories for us. In these memories, power shortages and storms were everywhere, we were with our families and loved ones in the dark, but we felt safe and warm. This year is like a storm for us, we are trying to make our music a soft one to connect to each other, so we could move on to a brighter future.”

On their latest single, ‘Under The Skin‘, Sunset Rollercoaster take on balladry, intersecting the gentle synths of Mild High Club, warmth of ‘This Old Dog’ era Mac Demarco and the charm of Connan Mockasin. “Just let these nights go by, till the stars fall from the sky” sings vocalist Kuo-Hung, recalling those glint-filled evenings spent swooning with another. Together with previous single ‘Candlelight‘ featuring OHHYUK, Sunset Rollercoaster allude to the slow burn of their third studio album, Soft Storm, an introspectively funky endeavor from the group. On ‘Midnight with Paul’, the band takes a tranquil, instrumental turn collaborating with (and naming it after) Chicago’s Paul Cherry. Velvety ‘Passerby‘ reimagines city pop and bedroom R&B with help from Michael Seyer.

Following their 2019 EP VANILLA VILLA and their most recent LP, 2018’s Cassa Nova, Sunset Rollercoaster continue their project of absorbing classic American genres and styles into their amalgam of smooth 80’s city pop, “cute prog rock” and contemporary pop music. With Soft Storm, they turn their attention to sensuous and pensive quiet storm R&B. Appropriately, Soft Storm is a record full of introspective funk and quietly intense narratives, loosely tracing the course of a rainstorm hitting an unnamed city, following individuals stories of residents caught up in its path as Kuo Kuo’s lyricism zooms in and out of their lives, darting from city building to building.

Now with their forthcoming record Soft Storm, Sunset Rollercoaster are set to capitalize on their increasingly worldwide popularity, known for their epic guitar jams, imaginative visuals, and mesmerizing live show. Their most recent 2019 EP, VANILLA VILLA, made fans at Bandcamp, Flaunt, Hypebeast, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, among others, with lead single ‘Villa‘ also getting a mind-bending remix from Stones Throw‘s Jerry Paper.

SLEAFORD MODS Announce new album Spare Ribs Out January 15, 2021 Share new single & video ‘Mork n Mindy’ ft. Billy Nomates Performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers

by the partae November 2, 2020
written by the partae

Poised to blow the cobwebs off life and unleash some much-needed wit and charm upon us, Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods announce the release of their astonishing sixth studio album, entitled Spare Ribs, out via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records on January 15th 2021.

New single, ‘Mork n Mindy’ featuring Billy Nomates is out now. The official video, which was directed by Ben Wheatley (whose latest body of work, Rebecca, is currently showing on Netflix and features a prominent cameo from frontman Jason Williamson) was filmed on location in Nottingham and in a replica of the house that Jason grew up. The band performed the track on Seth Meyers in the US last week and the host Seth played the single, recorded from the band’s 100 Club show in London earlier in September.

Jason says on the new track, “Mork n Mindy is the sound of the central heating and the dying smells of Sunday dinner in a house on an estate in 1982. Concrete, dinted garages, nicotine. Where beauty mainly exists in small cracks on the shell of your imagination. Captured perfectly in Ben Wheatley’s video for the song.”

The polemical Jason Williamson and dexterous producer Andrew Fearn kick against the pricks with unrivalled bite, railing against hypocrisy, inequality and apathy with their inimitable, scabrous sense of humour. And Spare Ribs, their sixth album, featuring Amy Taylor of Melbourne punks Amyl and the Sniffers and the British newcomer Billy Nomates, finds the duo charged with ire at the UK Government’s sense of entitlement, epitomized by its devil-may-care approach to the coronavirus crisis.

Recorded in lockdown in a furious three-week studio blitz at JT Soar in July; the album kicks off with their first-ever ‘intro’ track, the experimental ‘A New Brick’, which sees Jason adopt the persona of, as he describes it, a “circus master”, acknowledging with ironic jolliness, “We’re all so Tory tired / And beaten by minds small.” There is, he insists, no reason to feign optimism about 10 years of the Tories: “The only way you can wage war against them by explaining it in an intelligent manner, and not feeling intimidated at coming across as being negative.”

Commenting on the new album Jason says, “’Our lives are expendable under most governments, secondary under a system of monetary rule. We are stock if you like, parts on a shelf for the purposes of profit, discarded at any moment if fabricated or non-fabricated crisis threatens productivity. This is constant, obviously and notably in the current pandemic. The masses cannot be present in the minds of ill-fitting leaders, surely? Or else the realisation of their catastrophic management would cripple their minds. Much like the human body can still survive without a full set of ribs we are all ‘spare ribs’, preservation for capitalism, through ignorance and remote rule, available for parts.”

Spare Ribs is the sound of a band so sure of their own sonic terrain that they can now explore its outer regions. The album’s title, Jason says, emerged from “the idea of the amount of people that died from the first wave of coronavirus; human lives are always expendable to the elites… We’re in a constant state of being spare ribs.” Yet Sleaford Mods are an essential part of Britain’s musical anatomy.

Spare Ribs follows Sleaford Mods’ career-spanning retrospective album All That Glue and their sold-out debut Australian tour in March, which included standout performances at Golden Plains Festival, WOMADadelaide, Farmer & The Owl and more.

Life Without Andy

Sydney-via-Boston rapper Raj Mahal today shares ‘GET ME FROM’, the second single off his forthcoming EP RAW DAWG, due out later 2020. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

Following on from lead single ‘GLIMPSE’, which garnered attention from Acclaim, Listen Mag, Purple Sneakers and more, ‘GET ME FROM’ showcases the breadth of Raj’s experimental style exhibited across the upcoming RAW DAWG project. Where the glitchy, hard-edged ‘GLIMPSE’ was designed to hit the most primal receptors of your brain and body, ‘GET ME FROM’ treads the line between pure flex of musical prowess, subterranean party-starter and rumination on the nature of success and legacy. Swapping his trademark guttural rumble for autotune, ‘GET ME FROM’ is a robust display of minimalist menace, with the chilly production playing unnerving synth lines off blown-out, distorted bass kicks and stop-start percussion gradually ratcheting up the tension.

Of the track, Raj Mahal shares: “GET ME FROM IS PROBABLY THE MOST FUN I’VE HAD RECORDING A TRACK IN A WHILE. IT’S THE SECOND SINGLE OFF “RAW DAWG” AND SHOWS MY VERSATILITY. PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS TOLD ME TO PLAY THE GAME TO GET AHEAD BUT I’LL CHANGE IT INSTEAD. THE LINE, “I’M GONE DIE A LEGEND, I’M FOREVER, CAN’T FORGET ME” IS ME TELLING Y’ALL THAT I WILL NEVER LEAVE THIS THRONE. I’M HERE TO STAY.”

For the Boston born rapper, relocating to Australia was a decision made to find himself both emotionally and musically. Inspired by his uncles, key members of Boston’s small hip hop scene, Raj Mahal began rapping as a teenager, but his primary focus was on pursuing a career in football. Before long, with his family’s influence and an unsuspecting introduction to a producer several oceans away, Mahal put football on the backburner and took the plunge. No longer holding back with his drone laced blows, Mahal hopes to craft a lane for hip hop’s formidable storytelling origins to return to the local spotlight.

Despite their stylistic diversity, ‘GLIMPSE’ and ‘GET ME FROM’ together provide a sonic insight into the stark mental state that birthed the jagged and abrasive RAW DAWG EP, which is set to be Raj’s first major release since 2017’s, Neva Safe, following on from a string of standalone singles that has seen his stock skyrocket in his adopted country’s hip-hop scene. In between then and now, Mahal has collaborated with the likes of Triple One, Nerve, Dro Carey, Yibby and more, has performed as one quarter of Savour the Rations, his group with Gibrillah and Domba, and has opened for Wiley, YG and Smokepurpp on their Australian tours. Melding the electronic stylings of Danny Brown and A$AP Ferg with the lyrical dexterity of Jay Electronica and Chief Keef, Raj Mahal promises zero restraint with the release of RAW DAWG.

"Tell me" is a song birthed out of frustration. Frustration of this ongoing situation with being black. All the racism, systemic, micro aggresions etc. I have been seeing messages from folks I am connected to the last few months that disturb me. So I wanted to speak to that. "Tell me you know that everything's different when you're living black" Is the chorus of the song and I want that to ring home. Duane Forrest is a singer-songwriter and multimedia artist from Toronto, Canada. His unique sound blending jazz, reggae, bossa nova, soul and smooth vocals draws on his experiences traveling the world, falling in love, and finding wonder in the joys and sorrows of a common human experience.  He first gained attention in 2017, when he debuted his first musical theatre production, Climb, a live album experience based on his concept album of the same name. Toronto Fringe Festival founder Gregory Nixon described Duane’s show as “an engaging, multilayered work of song, storytelling and movement” and “one of the highlights of this year’s Fringe.” His forthcoming double jazz and fusion album builds on themes of love, heartbreak, BLM, and self-discovery, reflecting musically Duane’s growth as an artist and a human being. Aside from his innate drive to create beautiful things, Duane also has a passion for arts education. In 2011 he founded Genesis Community of the Arts, a registered Canadian charity offering music and arts education to marginalized children and youth in Toronto and Central America. https://www.duanesguitar.com/ https://www.instagram.com/duaneintheforrest/ https://www.facebook.com/duaneintheforrest/ https://twitter.com/duaneforrest

Having struggled since adolescence with abuse and mental illness, songwriting has always been an outlet for Title to create meaning out of feelings of suffering. Her upcoming debut EP ‘Green’ is a minimalist acoustic project, using a lyrical style and sparse but powerful vocals to convey the blend of vulnerability, grief, compassion and hope that make up the recurring themes of the work. Inspired by a diverse array of genres and artists such as Adrienne Lenker, Fiona Apple, Stevie Nicks, Rose Cousins, Sarah Harmer and Courtney Love – Title is a fierce political activist whose music a depth that is INCREDIBLE.

Association of Artist Managers Australia Launch GROW Mentor Program

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

Australia’s peak body for Artist managers, the AAM, has proudly  launched the inaugural GROW Program, thanks to support from the Victorian Government Music Recovery fund, through Creative Victoria.

Grow is a 3 month virtual pilot  program designed to support and empower womxn of all ages who are Artist Managers running their own business in Victoria.

The program consists of peer-to-peer mentoring with leaders in the fields of law, business and mental health and wellness and unique group webinars focused on business acumen. Participants will be supported to build new business plans, become more financially literate and build confidence in their leadership skills while also receiving a bursary to support their work. Grow has been designed using a broad range of research including  the AAM’s membership survey results from 2020 which found that women in this sector still experience gender inequality.

The 2020 AAM members survey found retention and longevity for female managers decreases after age 35, APRA/AMCOS ‘Australian Women, Screen, Composers Career Barriers and Pathways’ 2017 research paper found that just 21.7% of their members are songwriters. ABC by the numbers 2020 showed that  womxn musicians make up 24% of radio air-play. Music Victoria found barriers for women in the music industry to be lack of paid work opportunities, the casualisation of the work-force and the confidence gap. GROW aims to continue the progression of gender equity in Artist management through building business acumen, confidence  and capacity.

Running in tandem with this will be a special Victorian edition of the Co-Pilot program. Co-Pilot is an annual national mentor program that is a core professional development activity of the AAM. The mentorship is open to all levels of Artist Managers. To ensure a robust and healthy Victorian Artist management community in the future, managers  need to be supported to re-model, re-build and re-tool to have a sustainable and successful future.

The Victorian music industry is arguably the state hardest hit by the pandemic, with stage 4 lockdown in place for most of the year.  Both GROW and  Co-Pilot (Victorian Edition) deliver tailored professional development for those who need it most. All participants will receive generous bursaries to continue their work beyond the program and encourage them to continue to make  community connections.  Both programs will also give participants access to years of industry know-how through working with the most established Australian Artist Managers.

Grow and Victorian Co – pilot are accessible to Victorian AAM members for specific eligibility details please click the links below.

THE RIOT's PSYCHEDELIC JOURNEY IS CAPTURED IN THEIR NEW VIDEO ‘SAME BLUNT’
Music News

THE RIOT share new video for ‘Same Blunt’; Halloween video launch party announced for this Sunday

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

“..the band have arrived to fill a radical void in the industry.” – Sniffers

“left us all wondering where the bloody hell they’ve been hiding all this time.”– Blunt  Magazine

“genre-bending” – NME

“both captivating and packing an emotional punch” – LWA

“it goes hard” – Music Feeds

“they push the limits like no-one else” – Pilerats

THE RIOT’s new video for single ‘Same Blunt’ explores the three-piece in substance-influenced mode through a warm slightly nostalgic lens.

It’s a psychedelic journey.

The blunt connects everyone in the room. It removes pretending. It reveals authenticity so that people glow their own real colours.

Director Nick Waterman captures the feeling of everyone being on the same shit and super tuned into each other – totally, messily in-sync. “The trippy visuals really bring this feeling to life in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way. At the centre of this beautiful chaos are The Riot who are giving an epic and unhinged performance.”

‘Same Blunt’ is about returning to who you are.

THE RIOT ‘Same Blunt’ Official Video

‘Same Blunt’ was written in a spontaneous fury, coming together in a single day over cheap beers and weed. Beginning with a thrashing guitar riff before descending in an indelible mix of buoyant reggae, biting rap and boisterous punk, the new track is a testament to the band’s genre elasticity. ‘Same Blunt’ is a pummeling polemic about the perils of groupthink and the way immoral institutions can disempower individual thinking.

The band are throwing an exclusive Same Blunt Halloween Video Launch Party this Sunday, November 1st . Hit the band up through their IG post for details – HERE

DONNY BENÉT Announces Live Experience A virtual live performance of his new record Mr Experience Saturday 21 November Tickets on sale now

by the partae November 1, 2020
written by the partae

2020:

Mr Experience is released.

Global pandemic occurs – Live music shows and touring stops.

How do we bring the live experience of Mr Experience to a worldwide audience?

Today, Australia’s self-proclaimed “adult entertainer” Donny Benét announces Live Experience – a virtual live performance of his new record Mr Experience, taking place on Saturday 21 November in the comfort of your own home, wherever you are around the globe. To prevent you from being restricted by timezones, you will be able to watch the stream on this date at your convenience, however, Benét suggests tuning in at 8PM local time for optimal viewing.

Accompanied by his Show Band, Donny Benét has enlisted director Alex Smith and his collection of vintage video cameras and editing equipment, alongside a talented production crew, to capture the adventurous and exciting experience of a Donny Benét live show.

Tickets are on sale now via Eventbrite at a price of your choosing (pay as you can).

After humble lo-fi beginnings in the Australian art-pop underground, Donny Benét has expanded his cult-like following across the globe with a resonant array of danceable repertoire dealing with love and affection. Mr Experience marks a new chapter informed by a wealth of musical and personal development.

Featuring the singles ‘Mr Experience’, ‘Girl Of My Dreams’, ‘Second Dinner’ & ‘Moving Up’, Donny Benét envisions Mr Experience as a soundtrack to a dinner party set in the late 1980s. Since its release, it has been met with worldwide acclaim, including glowing reviews, features with Billboard, NME and Monocle, and has recently received nominations for ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album’ & ‘Best Cover Art’ at the 2020 ARIA Awards taking place in November.

A message from Donny Benét on Live Experience
In February I was fortunate enough perform in US/Canada on one of my most successful tours. It was so great to finally meet and connect with my US/Canadian audiences and I was very much looking forward to returning later in the year to tour Mr Experience. In March 2020 we had just begun rehearsing the band to prepare for the Mr Experience European tour in May and was looking forward to returning to Europe again to perform the new songs. Lockdown soon followed and we had to press pause after only one rehearsal together.
Like everything this year plans were made, changed, changed again and postponed.I wanted to stay connected to my audience throughout the early weeks of lockdown and decided to host The D Zone online every week until the new album was released. I had put so much love into writing Mr Experience and wanted to present it in the highest quality setting for audiences rather than a series of streamed shows.

I always had the idea of filming a live performance for posterity and generally being something on my wish list. As a huge music nerd I’ve spent endless hours trawling the internet watching live performances of my favourite artists and I always loved the idea that one day there would be a high-end production of a Donny Benét performance filmed and viewed online for years to come!

With the prospect of not being able to leave Australia for a long time this seemed like the perfect opportunity to indulge in this concept and create a piece of art with longevity. I approached the director Alex Smith to help bring this concept into reality. I always enjoy working with Alex – we both seem to operate within an extremely fine line of subtleties and niche references. Alex utilised his collection of vintage video cameras and editing equipment, alongside a talented production crew, to capture the adventurous and exciting experience of a Donny Benét live show.

My fantastic band lived up to all expectations with their warmth and musicality and for this special occasion we were able to invite two backing singers.

I’m ecstatic with how it turned out and it’s been quite satisfying to accomplish this project in an extremely dire time for live music. I hope you enjoy watching this concert!

–  Donny Benét

“Benét makes bonafide jams.”  – KEXP

“There’s a warmth to Donny Benét’s fifth album that rages with the way things are right now. As people turn to the comforting blanket of the music they grew up with to make a little sense of a world that simply doesn’t, ‘Mr. Experience’ takes the past and twists it into something modern yet classic.” – NME

“Benét’s quirky approach shows us that he knows how to charm listeners so that they suspend disbelief for the duration of the song and just enjoy the moment. Mr Experience offers feelgood respite from these strange and uncertain times.” – The Music

Alternative rap duo Craterface today share their sophomore release, the confessional mixtape BURN AFTER LISTENING. Listen HERE.

Rarely do titles come more bodacious or attention-grabbing than that of Craterface’s second mixtape. Its three words embody the all-caps catharsis of the duo’s deeply personal second full-length. BURN AFTER LISTENING is an instruction, a promise, a statement of intent that says here in your hands, you hold a piece of art so potent, so all-consuming, so loaded with confession and packed with every fibre of the artists’ souls that it becomes impossible to wash off. The only appropriate response is to sit, reflect and, finally, burn after listening.

Craterface wouldn’t have it any other way. The longtime creative partnership of rapper baby bruh and producer/vocalist Taki Local simply don’t do things in half-measures, pouring the entirety of themselves into their music, allowing listeners to piece through their brand of impassioned alt-hip hop and take what they will. “It’s so easy for us”, Taki Local says of the creative connection that exists between them; “I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else”, baby bruh concludes. The fervent devotion they inspire is second only to the group’s own commitment to leave-everything-out-there sincerity, egoless creative expression and authenticity.

Together they reflect, “This tape is the culmination of an emotional year, but at its core is about the power of spirituality and the effect that has on people who consider themselves just cogs in the wheel. The fact the creation of this tape took us both on a genuine, authentic spiritual path is more valuable than anything else, and we will never forget the strength it holds in that regard. Listen to this tape at whatever volume you please, and do so in the sun.”

BURN AFTER LISTENING is in some ways, a quintessential sophomore release: challenging and yet more rewarding than its predecessor, more spiritually fulfilling for its creators. Where Craterface’s debut mixtape DON’T BE CONFUSED was a smorgasbord of pop-adjacedent hip hop, its follow-up is a more concentrated effort at honing in a particular aesthetic and style. This time gravitating towards lo-fi, introspective New York rap, gritty mid-2000s hip hop and the anarchy of hyper-pop. At the same time, this release expands the duo’s creative universe outwards, drawing a cast of hand-selected artists into their strictly-in-house collaborative studios, including Art Rap Health Clinic tour-mates Shady Nasty on second single ‘ORIGAMI’ and Rhode Island producer-rapper Jair on opening track, ‘JAIR MALEEK DELGADO’.

Musing on themes of religion, spirituality, heartbreak, self-improvement and the cyclical nature of life, BURN AFTER LISTENING centres the confessional nature of baby bruh’s lyricism, while Taki Local’s production matches that fragmented energy with a boundarylessness mania reminiscent of SOPHIE or JPEGMAFIA. Already a singular act in the Australian music landscape, BURN AFTER LISTENING represents Craterface’s contribution to a new strand of hip hop in this country, one which is decidedly more insular, introspective and emotionally, creatively and stylistically innovative too.
