Multi-platinum Artists – Cheat Codes and Julia Church, Collaborate on Soundtrack To Dating Let-downs – ‘Modern Tragedy’

Artists: Cheat Codes, Julia Church
Title: Modern Tragedy
Label: Self-release (distributed via Create Music Group)

Download / Stream

In an impressive team-up of talent, the Los Angeles trio Cheat Codes and acclaimed Durban-born and London-based singer-songwriter Julia Church combine forces for their new single – “Modern Tragedy.” The track sits at the Cheat Codes‘ signature intersection of dance-electronic and pop, riding on undulating basslines, driving beats, and ethereal melodies from the famed producers, while Julia‘s breathy and soulful vocals bring some wistful and yet hopeful emotions to the entire composition.

“In a world where tragedy seems to be the only constant, we took that pain and transformed it into something greater. Working with Julia, we didn’t just make a track – we created a story that speaks to the struggle and finds beauty in the darkest moments. It’s a reminder that even in the chaos, there’s a harmony waiting to be found.” – Cheat Codes

“‘Modern Tragedy‘ is about navigating the trials and tribulations of modern dating. Feeling as though you’re stuck in a perpetual merry-go-round of excitement and let-downs. I wrote this after being ghosted by someone I really liked. Sometimes all you can do is laugh (and write a song about it).” – Julia Church

Church has worked with some A-list electronic acts in the past, such as John Summit, Diplo, Sub Focus, Kaskade, CamelPhat, Gorgon City, Robin Schulz, to name only a handful, and her performance truly shines when added to Cheat Codes‘ dynamic and creative production prowess. After putting out a pop ballad – “Bloom” with Train, last month, “Modern Tragedy” sees them returning to the dance-electronic realm.

Australian artist and producer RAYHAB releases cathartic new single, Overkill

by the partae September 19, 2024
written by the partae

RAYHAB is the stage name for independent singer, songwriter & producer Natasha K Newling.

With a unique background in professional dance, acting and music production as well as significant personal adversity, Newling has created an empowered artistic vision, one that presents the experience of the world around her through her moniker RAYHAB.

On her artist’s name, Newling comments “I created RAYHAB to establish a distinct identity, separating my work as a producer and engineer from my journey as a recording artist. The name resonated with me. It stems from a sex worker in the bible, the world saw her as nothing but through conviction she was deemed to be worth so much more.”

Newling is an authentic storyteller, her music can be described as eclectic, alt-pop with an experimental playfulness. Embodying a sense of opulence, with rich, layered production that evokes a cinematic experience.

Her latest offering titled, ‘Overkill’ dives into the emotional rollercoaster of a relationship that turned sour with lies and deceit. Newling draws inspiration from a short-lived romantic encounter. Each element feels intentional, weaving together to tell a compelling story through lyric and sound. The storytelling in the song is deeply emotive, drawing listeners in, with heartfelt lyrics and dynamic vocals. Pop with depth, catchy melodies with emotional complexity that lasts long after the song ends.

On writing the song, Newling says, “I imagined continuing a life with a cold and indecisive partner. Through songwriting it was easy to see that I need not lament on a relationship lacking in communication, as it revealed all roads would lead to sadness.”

Newling first burst onto the music scene with her debut release “Will It End?” in 2020, garnering airplay on community radio, Triple J, and ABC Rage. Behind the scenes, Newling honed her production and engineering prowess, working alongside Australia’s top producers and is now a resident producer at Sydney’s Forbes Street Studios. She has racked up credits assisting on various  projects including Women Of Soul, Moaning Lisa, and Emilee South; co-writing Will Not Let Them Win for Jess Hitchcock’s latest album, UNBREAKABLE; and engineering and producing for newly formed artist, Marigolden.

Following the recent release of single, Only 21, Newling’s focus is firmly back on RAYHAB, as she gears up to unleash her meticulously crafted, self-written, produced, and engineered debut EP ‘Residue’ which has drawn comparisons to luminaries such as Aurora, Grimes, and Kate Bush.

Overkill is out now on all digital streaming platforms.

Bridge Left to Burn Unleashes ‘Vile’: Metalcore Against Sexism

by the partae September 19, 2024

Bridge Left to Burn Unleashes Defiant Metalcore Anthem “Vile” – A Brutal Response to Sexism in the Heavy Scene

Brace yourselves for a thrilling new release as Bridge Left To Burn unveils their latest single, “Vile”, a blistering metalcore track that is here to obliterate stereotypes and serve up some serious attitude. This powerhouse track is more than just a song; it’s a defiant middle finger to the naysayers and a rallying cry for women in the heavy music scene.

“Vile” isn’t just a song; it’s a statement. It’s for every woman who’s ever been underestimated, sidelined, or dismissed. It’s for those who’ve fought to be heard in a male-dominated space and are sick of being told they don’t belong. This is more than music; it’s a declaration of power and a testament to resilience.

Right before the brutal breakdown, “Vile” features a clip from a sexist comment that was made towards the band by a YouTuber, setting the stage for a sonic onslaught that will make you want to throw your horns up and scream. This provocative element underscores the song’s message: a resolute “screw you” to anyone who has ever tried to undermine or diminish the role of women in heavy music.

“We wanted ‘Vile’ to be more than just a song” says [Vocalist Ava Sukkar]. “It’s a statement of resilience and empowerment. By using the clip of the sexist comment, we’re turning negativity into fuel, showing that we won’t be silenced or sidelined. This is our way of saying ‘We’re here, and we’re not going anywhere.’”

Mackay I’m looking at you, Cairns, what’s it been? Seven years?
It fills us with great excitement, joy, and danceathons, anticipating our touchdown in the regional areas and in the capital cities, especially on Tuesday nights. Why Tuesday nights? Because Tuesday night is a night that people could be partying but they don’t. It’s kind of the rejected night, Tuesdays. Where restaurants and movie theatres run special offers to fill empty seats. We want to bring Tuesdays back to the masses. We wanna make Tuesdays part of the vernacular again. What are you doing Tuesday? This should be the new, ‘what are you doing Friday?’ This is our mission. What are you doing Tuesday? We’re seeing Grinspoon. That’s what we’re doing. What are you doing Wednesday? We’re gonna go see Grinspoon again, because they were so good on Tuesday. So forget Friday, forget Saturdays. Let’s do Tuesdays. See you soon? – Phil Jamieson.

German Techno Pioneer Tom Wax returns with “Move Your Soul”

German Techno Pioneer Tom Wax returns with thrilling techno single “Move Your Soul”

For more than 30 years, Tom Wax has remained a key figure in the evolution of techno and house music, both in Germany and internationally. Since his debut in 1988, Wax has pushed the boundaries of electronic music, crafting a unique sound that merges the relentless drive of techno with the rhythmic grooves of house. His influence resonates across dancefloors around the world, as countless DJs and producers continue to draw inspiration from his innovative approach to production and sound design.

What truly sets Wax apart is his ability to evolve while maintaining a deep connection to the roots of his sound. Throughout the ’90s, he made his mark with projects like Arpeggiators and DJ Tom & Norman, creating timeless tracks such as “Cosmic Evolution” and “Freedom of Expression” on revered labels like R&S and Harthouse Frankfurt. His international breakthrough arrived in 1995 through AWeX, a collaboration with Thorsten Alder, which brought forth the legendary anthem “It’s Our Future” on the iconic Plastic City imprint—a track that remains an essential part of techno’s rich history.

In the 2000s, Wax shifted his focus to his solo career, steadily releasing music on high-profile labels such as Toolroom, Filth On Acid, and his own Phuture Wax imprint. His latest release, the hard-hitting single “Move Your Soul” on Better ‘With You Music, showcases his ability to stay relevant in today’s electronic music scene, effortlessly blending fresh elements with his signature Wax sound. The track is a powerful reminder that Wax is still at the forefront, crafting music designed to ignite dancefloors across the globe.

Beyond his prolific output as a producer, Tom Wax has also played a vital role behind the scenes. His work as an A&R for Harthouse/Eye Q and Music Research has helped shape the careers of emerging talents, while his long-standing residency at the legendary Dorian Gray club in Frankfurt cemented his reputation as a DJ capable of commanding any crowd. Collaborating with major players like CJ Bolland, Marshall Jefferson, and Kai Tracid, Wax’s career is further highlighted by a staggering number of remixes for legendary acts like Erasure, Yello, and Jam & Spoon.

With no signs of slowing down, Tom Wax continues to push the boundaries of techno and house, staying true to his craft while constantly evolving. His latest release “Move Your Soul” is proof that, after three decades, Wax remains a crucial force in the electronic music world, as relevant and innovative as ever.

Challenging the Narrative: UNI/VS on Truth and Trust

by the partae September 16, 2024
written by the partae

Your new track ‘A Chosen Death’ packs a punch! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the song and the themes you wanted to explore?

A Chosen Death was brought to fruition through a deep look into our post pandemic world and the increasingly unhinged and polarised views being fed to the public through traditional media. It poses the question ‘Can we really trust the narrative of our elected leaders or that of whomever is pulling their strings?’. We hope to invite critical thought and observation as well as hope that if we all speak our truth things may get better.

The track dives into post-pandemic life and polarised views in the media. How did the chaos of recent years influence your songwriting process?

From Scott: It’s really opened my eyes to how fragile society is. It’s been hard to put what I’ve wanted to into words without wrongfully condemning myself and by proxy the rest of the band. I’ve never wanted to get political or impose my personal views on anyone. So it’s important for me to write lyrics that everyone can find their own meaning in.

You’ve posed some big questions in the lyrics, like whether we can trust our leaders. What do you hope listeners will take away from the track?

From Scott: I hope to inspire a healthy criticism of our authority and social trends but ultimately the courage to speak ones truth.

What was it like working with Garath Hargreaves on production? Did he help bring a fresh perspective to your sound?

It is always a pleasure working with Gary. He has produced our whole discography and we don’t know if we’ll ever work with anyone else. He has a very good ear for Metalcore production and continuously helps us get the sound we are looking for. Gary also puts a lot into our live sound. He will also be our sound engineer for our tour in Oct/Nov.

You’re kicking off the ‘A Chosen Death’ tour in October. What can fans expect from these live shows? Any surprises in store?

We hope to just go out there and give it our best every single night. We have put a lot of work into constructing a set list that will accommodate our earliest fans to our newest. We hope to bring dynamics into our set that will form a journey to the people in the crowd.

You’ve toured with some heavy hitters like Volumes and Gravemind. How does it feel to get back on the road with new music after the pandemic?

It is very refreshing getting back on the road after the pandemic. During the pandemic we had to cancel our first headline tour around Australia along with our first international show. We were unsure if we would be able to pick up the pieces when the dust cleared. Thankfully we were able to get a couple of opportunities to tour again in 2023 & are stoked that we are able to head out on a headline tour this year.

You’ve got a knack for blending bone-crushing breakdowns with melodic hooks. How do you strike that balance when writing songs like ‘A Chosen Death’?

We all listen to a pretty wide variety of music which lends itself inherently to a bit of a mix when it comes to writing. We almost always write the instrumentals first and fit the vocal placement and lyrical content to the mood of the finished song. Generally when we’re writing we naturally lean towards finding contrast, usually having clean/melodic sections directly before or after heavy sections, blending heavy vocals into the choruses or having both vocalists sing/scream different lyrics at the same time and using a variety of synth/electronics to build the mood of the track. Often we’ll carry the same electronics over from the melodic sections to the heavy sections to help tie them together musically.

The song’s title has a bit of a grim edge. What does ‘A Chosen Death’ mean to you, and how does it tie into the broader message of the track?

A Chosen Death refers directly to the state in which the world has found itself in. Polarising views pushed by government and media have driven humans further and further apart, effectively causing the death of a cohesively functioning society. The catch is that we elected these representatives and we feed back into the media narrative, thereby becoming a death we chose ourselves.

Your upcoming shows are spread across some iconic Aussie venues. Do you have a favourite city to play in, or a memory from past gigs that stands out?

Obviously, our home town of Brisbane is where a lot of the bigger/ most memorable shows we have played, But if we were to pick a town away from home it would have to be Melbourne. Melbourne crowds always seem to welcome us with open arms and we always get a really positive response after every show there.

After the tour, what’s next for UNI/VS? Are there more singles or perhaps a full album in the works?

We have sported the idea of doing a full length album but with the current size of the band and how people consume music in this day and age, we are unsure if putting the energy into a full length is the right thing to do. New music is definitely in the works, how we release it e.g. a full length, EP or singles is still unknown. We are also working on hitting some locations around Australia we haven’t played before, mostly regional towns but are pushing hard to get over to Perth as well.

INTERVIEW: DJ BLISS – “808” Fusion: Blending Cultures, Beats

by the partae September 13, 2024
written by the partae

How does it feel to represent Middle Eastern music on a global stage, especially through collaborations such as “808” with BIA?

It’s an absolute privilege. Collaborating with BIA was an amazing musical union and we produced a track that reached #7 on the official Spotify Top-200 United Arab Emirates Charts. With the support of FIVE Hotels and Resorts and Warner Music Central Europe,, the song became a tremendous global hit!

FIVE Music and FIVE Hotels and Resorts have been instrumental in promoting diversity—how has this partnership helped shape your career?

FIVE Music gives multiple diverse artists a strong platform to create, develop and perform. From my own personal experience, signing with FIVE Music has been deeply transformative. At the FIVE Music studio at FIVE Palm Jumeirah, I am able to create the incredible music I produce today, and perform on some of the world’s biggest stages.

“808” blends hip-hop, pop, and dance influences. What was the creative process like in bringing together these different sounds?

As diverse artists collaborating, two uniquely different artistic styles blended together to produce the song of the summer. The song also pays tribute to an iconic instrument – the 808 drum machine. Joining forces with artists who are passionate about high-quality music is always thrilling.

Working with BIA, known for her international success, must have been exciting. How did her style influence the direction of “808”?

It definitely was! BIA is a powerhouse of pure talent and our combined artistic expressions are clearly showcased in “808.” The music video beautifully contrasts Dubai’s dual nature, merging its extravagant lifestyle with fast cars and luxury yachts, alongside the traditional desert dunes.

Middle Eastern music is rising in global popularity—what do you think are the reasons behind this growing trend?

Primarily, it’s about awareness and acceptance, and the direction in which our region is advancing.

This shift signifies not only a greater acceptance of diverse cultures, but also proudly highlights the region’s dynamic progression across all fronts – and borders.

How has your role in the Netflix series “Dubai Bling” impacted your music career and your international recognition?

The show has had great success, and I appreciate all the incredible opportunities that have been associated with being a central figure on a widely-popular Netflix show.

Can you share more about your experience performing at BLING and Paradiso Dubai? How do these venues contribute to the global exposure of Middle Eastern artists?

BLING at FIVE Palm Jumeirah is an incredible underground club where urban music takes centre stage and artists are given a  chance to experiment with different genres of music.

Paradiso Dubai (Barcelona 50 Best Bar 2022’s counterpart in the Middle East) at FIVE LUXE, in contrast, is a cocktail bar that caters to a sophisticated audience that prefers to enjoy quality time with friends while listening to great music, rather than dancing non-stop in a club. The ambiance is uniquely captivating, setting it apart from any other destination I’ve encountered in Dubai.

You’ve collaborated with international stars like Shaggy and now BIA—how do you choose the artists you want to collaborate with?

It’s always about finding the right fit, as each track is unique. My team and I are always searching for the best suited voice, musical style, creative energy – and from there; everything proceeds smoothly.

“808” symbolises personal growth and empowerment. Can you elaborate on the message you wanted to convey through this track?

The core message of this track is – just be your most authentic self.

Looking forward, what are your next goals in continuing to elevate Middle Eastern music and bridging the gap between cultures?

There is a lot to come, so get ready for exciting new tracks and mega announcements that I’m eager to reveal.

There’s also an incredible musical line-up to look forward to at Playa Pacha at FIVE LUXE, Dubai’s Ibizan-inspired pool and beach club, as well as the legendary Bohemia at Beach by FIVE, FIVE Palm Jumeirah, renowned for its spectacular day-to-night parties.

Embracing Chaos: Asbjørn Dances Through Vulnerable Creativity

by the partae September 13, 2024
written by the partae

Congrats on the release of ‘Vulnerably Happy’! The track is so raw and intense. Can you tell us more about the story behind the song and how that bus stop moment inspired you?

Thanks guys! So happy to chat to you again, last time was such a pleasure.

Ok, so the bus stop situation is kinda the origin story about how the whole album came about, so here we go;

I was randomly standing by a construction-site waiting for a bus home. It had been an intense summer, a complicated relationship was weighing pretty heavy on me but something brought me out of my head; the heavy machinery from the site were creating these stumbling rhythms, morphing in and out of each other, sometimes creating moments of sync, only to completely fall apart again. It made me dance in a really weird way, trying to follow the unpredictability and tension in their glitchy polyrhythms.

I recorded the construction site sounds, hurried home and tried to translate the experience, the heavy machinery and the weird movements into music. That experiment turned into ‘Vulnerably Happy’ and kickstarted my creative approach for the album; letting my body lead the way and dance the music to life.

Your upcoming album, “The Secret Our Bodies Hold,” sounds incredibly personal. What can fans expect from this album, and how does it differ from your previous work?

I’ve always used dance to find courage. You see, I often write songs on the piano and they often turn out waayyy more self-exposing than I’m actually comfortable with, which then results in me shelving the song, thinking that it can never actually see the light of day. But at some point I found out that if I give my emotions a physique to freely explore the feeling through, I find the needed courage to stand by them.

So, to answer your question, I think The Secret Our Bodies Hold is both more emotionally and physically extreme than my previous work. I’ve explored body and emotion in harmony and conflict and as a result, it doesn’t always resolve in this catharsis that we tend to crave in pop music. I think the album leaves you with more questions than answers.

You’ve been quite busy lately—Roskilde Festival, Danish Breakfast TV, and even gracing the cover of GAFFA Magazine. How has all this exposure influenced your music and your approach to performance?

It’s been mental! I had never expected THIS album to launch me into that kind of next level career shit. The fact that I stopped trying to look at myself from the outside with industry-eyes while making it… I think that makes the commercial success feel rewarding in a healthier way, you know? It’s reaffirming that I should keep going with my instinct, which is easy to preach but a real challenge to practise.

That dynamic can be so confusing; striving for recognition and success can really fuck your navigation up. If you get acknowledgement for something you KNOW you compromised on, there’s a risk that it leads you in the wrong direction – further away from yourself. I’ve been there and that was not a good place.

Performing at Roskilde Festival is a massive achievement. How did it feel to be on that stage, and what was the audience’s reaction to your set?
It’s kind of a blur, to be honest. I often find that those moments you’ve been dreaming of your whole life can be a bit roller-coaster-y. Like, I felt happy, sad, self-aware, present, control, loss, totally in control, everything in glimpses and at once. We played most of the new album which was obviously something to demand from the crowd, that they’d be open to so much new music; but damn, did they welcome it with love!

It took me a couple of days to unpack, zooming in on videos to see if my emotions were visibly as all over the place as I felt. To my relief and surprise, my chaos was on the inside and now I just feel freaking proud.

Your school tours are a unique and powerful way to connect with young people about important issues like sexuality and self-acceptance. What inspired you to start these tours, and what has been the most memorable experience so far?

The answer to that question is a total apropos to your previous question. Around 2020 I was feeling quite lost in my career. I had been signed to a major label, written a lot of songs with amazing writers and producers around the world and I was trying to walk a more mainstream path. I was living out a lot of dreams on that path but along the way, my idea of success had been corrupted. Aiming for mainstream success comes with a humongous margin of error. The criteria for that kind of success is so hard to reach, so even though you do pretty good and the best you can, you still feel like a failure.

That’s when I started touring schools. I wanted to do something actively to make a change for teens who feel different and who grow up in environments that don’t accept them. That’s my own story and I know how much it would have meant, if someone like me had represented me back then. The wild thing is that I see the change happening before my eyes; during 45 minutes bullies turn into fans and we talk about a lot of difficult identity questions. All these shows have helped me rewire my brain into a healthier place, where success is not defined by uncontrollable commercial measures, but by integrating my values into my music and career in general.

‘Vulnerably Happy’ has this industrial, almost aggressive sound to it. How did you translate that emotional and physical intensity into the music?

I created the beat from my recording of the construction site and amplified it with some samples of a very naughty-sounding shelf that Rangleklods recorded and put on his Patreon. Then I made the bass-synth inspired by my butt (yes), simply cos it was bouncing in that rhythm to the beat. After that I found some really ugly pages in my notebook with the scrippled lyrics, that I’d written in a very helpless state of mind. The melody came as an improvisation over those words.

I realized that I could sing it with more emotion, calmness and catch all these little details in my vibrato if I recorded the vocals at a 10% lower speed. To me, that created a certain ambiguity that I still don’t quite understand myself and that excites me.

With “The Secret Our Bodies Hold” set to release on November 1st, can you give us a little tease of any standout tracks or themes that are especially close to your heart?

Right now I’m most excited about a song called ‘Dinotopia’, which features me rapping dinosaurs and dirty-talking but it’s also weirdly touching at the same time. With that said, I think the real power of this album lies in its entirety. I can’t wait to see people notice the connections and create their own understanding of it. My own is still changing and I’m so eager to find out what you see.

You’re one of the most played artists on Danish radio right now. How does it feel to have your music resonate so deeply with your home country, and how do you plan to bring that energy to an international audience, maybe even Australia?

I’m so proud. I’ve hustled for 12 years and it’s almost become an identity-thing to work in opposition to the mainstream, cos that part of the industry has rejected me again and again. To suddenly be acknowledged like this is obviously amazing but also comes with a side effect of identity crisis. Like, am I… dare I say it…. mainstream now???

I’m so happy that ‘New Moon, Same Old Me’ was the song to do this. It’s a symbol of my friendship with Brimheim, who is also one of my favorite artists in the world. The emotional intensity and the nuances in the relation on this song is a direct result of our love for each other and I think that might be what’s hitting people.

Me and my little team are working out butts off to make the most of it and Australia is no 1 on my wishlist; you guys have embraced the music with such love!

GAFFA Magazine has compared you to iconic artists with your recent cover feature. How do you handle the pressure of such high expectations, and how does it shape your creative process?

It took me ages to realize that I HAD to stop comparing myself directly to other artists. Especially superstars. I take so much inspiration from my own idols, often imitate them in music or in release-strategies and general career-development. But it’s so important to be extremely real with yourself about who you are and how those imitations become integrated in your career, in a scale that applies to you. If I compare myself directly to David Bowie or Dua Lipa, I’m setting myself up for failure, cos our careers are simply not comparable – and I don’t want them to be. But being able to take elements and translate them into your own reality is a potential superpower

With that said, I’m totally flattered by a lot of the comparisons people make – but I don’t let it become a pressure anymore cos I know I can only do it the Asbjørn way.

Australia is keen to see you live! Any plans to bring your music and message Down Under soon? What can Aussie fans expect from an Asbjørn show?

I will be needing a spider security guard at all times, since I am deadly arachnophobic but apart from that; YES, it is very much my plan to visit Australia soon. In a recent interview with DNA Magazine, I also indulged in doing some serial-dating while touring the country, so that’s exciting – but apart from that, my concerts are meant for finding connection. To each other, to ourselves and to our bodies. Exploring freely and forgetting how we look from the outside. At least that’s what I strive for, on stage, in music and in life.

Produced, mixed, and mastered by Garath Hargreaves (Wildheart, Young Lions), the song explores life post-pandemic and questions the increasingly polarized and unhinged narratives often portrayed in traditional media.

‘Baited’ seems to mark a shift for you. Can you yarn a bit about what inspired this heavier direction?

‘Baited’ definitely represents a new chapter for us. We were inspired by the idea of blending our grunge roots with a more mature, heavier sound. We wanted to explore the raw energy and intensity we felt in our live performances and translate that into our recordings. At our core, we’re inspired by bands like Foo Fighters, Catfish and the Bottlemen, U2, The Beths and lots of Aussie Indie bands. It’s about capturing a more dynamic and emotionally charged essence while staying true to our core influences.

You worked with an impressive lineup of producers on this track—how was the experience, and what did they bring to the table?

Working with such a talented group of engineers was an amazing experience. Each person added their own unique touch to the track. Bella, who has produced all our tracks, once again took the lead on this single. She always has a clear vision for the sonic direction of the song, and we had an incredible team that helped bring her ideas to life. Their expertise and input helped us refine our sound and explore new creative boundaries. They encouraged us to experiment and tap into the emotional depth of the song in ways we hadn’t before.

How does ‘Baited’ reflect where you are as a band right now compared to when you released ‘Next To Me’?

‘Baited’ shows a significant evolution from ‘Next To Me.’ While ‘Next To Me’ had a more straightforward, catchy vibe, ‘Baited’ delves into a deeper, more introspective space with a heavier sound. It reflects our growth as artists and our desire to challenge ourselves and our listeners. We finally feel comfortable in our sound as a band, it feels like the most authentic version of our current selves and we’re excited to see where this new confidence in our own sound takes us and our music.

You’ve said ‘Baited’ is about standing up for yourself—did any personal stories or moments fuel this message?

Absolutely. “Baited” was inspired by personal experiences of feeling like you’re being provoked or drawn into conflict. Sometimes, people really know how to push your buttons, and the song captures that frustration. While you often hear advice like “pick your battles,” which can be valid, there are times when you need to stand your ground and stay true to your beliefs and decisions. It’s about overcoming challenges and not allowing others’ opinions or actions to sway you from your own path.

With such an evolving sound, do you reckon your upcoming tracks will keep pushing boundaries or take a different route?

We’re definitely excited to keep pushing boundaries. While we’ll always stay true to our core sound, we’re open to exploring new directions and influences. Our goal is to continue evolving while keeping the essence of what makes our music unique.

You’ve supported some big names like Bootleg Rascal and Teenage Dads. What’s been the biggest lesson from sharing stages with these legends?

We’ve been lucky enough to share the stage with so many awesome bands. I think the biggest lesson has been the importance of stage presence and connection with the audience. Seeing these artists perform taught us about the energy and charisma needed to truly captivate a crowd. It’s something we strive to incorporate into our own live performances.

The music video for ‘Baited’ has that vibrant Auckland energy—what was filming like, and do you have any yarns from behind the scenes?

Filming was such a blast! We really wanted to capture the vibrant energy of Auckland, and it was amazing to see that come to life on screen. Our director, David Argue, did an incredible job of translating the vibe of the song into a visual representation. It’s always a bit strange being in front of the camera—we’re musicians, not actors, so trying to look cool in a video can feel a little awkward, haha. But that’s one of the great things about being in a band. We can joke around behind the scenes, support each other on screen, and make the whole experience a lot more fun and relaxed.

How does working in the studio with pros compare to the energy of your live performances? Do you try to capture that same live vibe?

The studio and live performances each offer unique experiences, but both are equally important to us. In the studio, we focus on perfecting our sound, making sure each track is the best possible version of itself. But live performances are where we thrive—it’s all about raw energy and connecting with the audience. There’s nothing like hearing hundreds of people singing your songs back to you. We always try to capture that live energy in our recordings to maintain that sense of authenticity.

As Coast Arcade steps into 2024 with a refined sound, how do you plan to keep that sense of fun and chemistry alive while exploring new styles?

Maintaining our sense of fun and chemistry is essential to us. We’ll keep working closely as a band, ensuring the creative process stays collaborative and never losing sight of the joy that making music brings. We started this band as friends with a passion for music, and it’s great to see that, despite everything, we’re still those same music lovers who find comfort in playing on stages together across the country. We’re excited to explore new styles while staying true to what makes Cost Arcade special at its core.

Looking ahead, what’s on the cards for the rest of 2024? More tunes, tours, or any surprises we should keep an eye out for?

We’ve got some exciting plans lined up for the rest of 2024! We’ll be dropping more new music and gearing up for a massive summer of shows across the country. In early 2025, we’re aiming to head across the ditch and release a full body of work. Plus, there may be a few surprises along the way, so stay tuned—we’re really excited to share what’s coming next!

The multi award-winning Indigenous hip hop group DEM MOB is thrilled to announce the release of their latest single, “I’ll Get By,” a powerful track serving as a beacon of hope and empowerment for those grappling with mental health challenges – “I’ll Get By,” is a testament to the transformative power of self-help and resilience.

With a fresh incorporation of clean vocals, influenced by the melodic styles of The Weeknd and Michael Jackson, and inspired by the likes of Kendrick Lamar and J Cole, the song marks a slender shift in DEM MOB’s musical direction.

“I’ll Get By” emerges from the personal journeys of each member of DEM MOB, particularly during a period of significant change and challenge while relocating to Adelaide. The track reflects their collective experiences and the personal battles of group members, including Elisha, Jontae, and Basso, alongside Matt . It encapsulates a message of overcoming adversity through self-awareness and inner strength.

Recorded in their home studio, the creation of “I’ll Get By” was a spontaneous burst of creative synergy, completed in under 24 hours—a memorable testament to the group’s cohesive dynamic, which was crafted collaboratively by the group and finely tuned with mixing by Luke Million and mastering by Andre Eremin.

DEM MOB hopes that “I’ll Get By” will inspire listeners to harness their personal power to navigate life’s challenges.

In the words of Jontae, “By constant self-development and self-control you can develop greatness of character.” It’s a reminder that even in the darkest times, there’s a guiding voice within each of us, ready to lead the way forward.

The accompanying music video, directed by the talented Natasha Wanganeen with Maxx Corkindale as the director of photography, features a compelling transition from black and white to colour, symbolizing the journey from hardship to empowerment. This visual motif aligns closely with the song’s underlying message of seeing the world anew through the lens of self-determination.

“I’ll Get By” is more than just a single; it’s an anthem for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed yet found the strength to persevere, as DEM MOB they continues to use their music as a platform for advocacy, education, and cultural.
