Barong Family Goes Hard for Their 200th Release With 7-Track EP “BF200.” Featuring New Music Yellow Claw, Wiwek, Nonsens, RayRay, Psycho Boys Club and More

Yellow Claw‘s Barong Family celebrates 6 years and 200 releases with an EP compilation appropriately titled “BF200,” which features seven brand new tracks from the brightest names on the label, such as Yellow Claw themselves, Wiwek, Crisis Era, RayRay, GHOSTER, Nonsens, Psycho Boys Club, and more. The Amsterdam-based imprint has become known for its wide range of musical influences and high-tempo BPMs, and “BF200” follows the same vein. Spanning sounds from three continents and even a reworked ’90s classic, “BF200” also has a unique and fantastical backstory. Ever the creative crew, the EP‘s accompanying artwork, and bonus audiobook see Barong Family travels across space and time to save their home planet Mother Earth. As for the sonic journey of “BF200,” it begins with “I Want It” from Yellow Claw and Wiwek, who deliver epic hip-hop beats to set the tone of the EP. Next up is Canadian duo Crisis Era‘s “Funky Pills” for all the old school ravers out there, while DJ Soda and RayRay‘s “Obsession” serves up a sneaky dose of hard-hitting bass. Yellow Claw themselves reworked the Tokyo Ghetto Pussy‘s 1995 hit “Kiss Your Lips” for the EP, giving the classic a modern dance facelift. GHOSTER employs Nanami‘s breathy vocals to deliver a solid mission statement in “Belong,” before Danish threesome Nonsens put the pedal to the metal with “Teaze,” speeding up proceedings with immense 4/4 energy. Finally, all systems go on Psycho Boys Club‘s “Break.” Did anyone expect Barong Family to ever take it easy?

Yukon Blonde Announce Fifth Studio LP ‘Vindicator’ And Share New Track

After ten years since forming and five LPs in, Yukon Blonde have been characterized in a lot of different ways. They emerged as a guitar-heavy rock band with their debut self-titled LP in 2010 and by the release of On Blonde in 2015, Yukon Blonde were experimenting with slick, ‘80s inspired pop elements like those heard on the album’s driving hit single Saturday Night. More recently, on 2018’s Critical Hit, the Vancouver-based five-piece band turned their attention to mood making, largely ditching their guitars in favour of synths and drum machines to build danceable, multi-dimensional soundscapes.

With their fifth release, Vindicator, Yukon Blonde rewrite their story again. Jeffrey Innes (vocals/guitar/keys), Brandon Scott (vocals/guitar), Graham Jones (vocals/drums), James Younger (vocals/bass/keys), and Rebecca Gray (vocals/keys) douse keyboard melodies and relaxed grooves with psychedelic hues that are both playful and expansive.

With singles In Love Again and Get Precious already racking up the plays around the globe, today the band are sharing another new single, You Were Mine. “We were all on Galiano island for this recording,” says Innes. “James brought the initial idea to the table, and after several hours of jamming, eating Scooby-snacks and drinking Churchill martinis, it started to fall apart in the most perfect way imaginable. I feel like this song somehow epitomizes the spirit of a successful collaboration in our band. Words like ‘compromise’ had no place in that session; everyone sings leads at some point, everyone plays everything. It’s certainly among our favourites from the record.”

From the opening track, Vindicator will immediately put you under a joyful spell and then never let you go. “We’re more mature and comfortable with ourselves now and we know that we can try something new even at this stage in our career,” explains Younger. “We completely deconstructed the narrative of the band and made the music that felt good at the moment.”

Vindicator is the first Yukon Blonde album written, recorded, and produced entirely by the band. It took shape in their jam space in East Vancouver, a cabin on Galiano Island, in a closet at Younger’s home, and in Innes’ kitchen. But this DIY ethos has always been the backbone of Yukon Blonde who are curious artists with a passion for honing their craft.

The in-house approach to Vindicator allowed Yukon Blonde to stretch themselves creatively and experiment with sounds and styles in ways they haven’t before. The band share vocal duties and Innes, the band’s primary songwriter, lets his lyrics, which touch on everything from love to redefining your relationship with social media, drive the shape of the songs.

Admittedly, making Vindicator by themselves was a creative risk but it’s one that’s paid off. Even the album title is a nod to how Yukon Blonde feel about the record’s outcome. As Innes notes, “You don’t really need to compete with yourself, you just need to challenge yourself.”

“It’s a very rewarding feeling taking control of yourself and your creative ambition,” adds Younger. “It’s something that you can ride high on because expectations were met and fulfilled and that’s a joyous thing.”

One of Australia’s most prolific and exciting producers Ukiyo has today released his hypnotic new single The Middle featuring Panama.  This is a lowkey, pulsing bed of a track, with bubbling energy permeating throughout and is perfectly complemented by a gorgeous, glowing video that will transport the viewer on a journey to a mellow, rose-pink, levitating otherworld.  The Middle is the latest single to be shared from Ukiyo’s forthcoming self-titled debut LP Ukiyo LP, set for release on November 13 – Vinyl/CD available for pre-order and pre-save the album from today.    Influenced by the ambient electronic of Tourist and the dancefloor vibes of Jon Hopkins, The Middle is a stunning, moving track, one which washes over the listener in a way that will have them pressing replay again and again.  Wistful and delicate, Panama’s gentle, raw vocal sings lyrics that speak to the compromises and sacrifices that we make to keep our relationships alive.  Mixed by Tim Watt (Golden Features, MUTO, Hermitude, Crooked Colours) and mastered by Wayne Sutherland (What So Not, Motez, Willaris K), The Middle is a beautiful addition to Ukiyo’s stunning discography.  Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, Ukiyo says, “The Middle is all about meeting in ‘the middle.’  The original demo when I sent it to Panama was called “stay” which I thought was a funny little response to my previous track “Go” with Chymes.  They both discuss similar themes of dysfunctional relationships & the fight within when you’re trying to leave them….working with Panama was a dream come true.  His ‘Always’ EP way back in 2013 with all the amazing remixes on it was one of the things that got me absolutely hooked on electronic music & learning how to make it so this song is a bit of a full circle moment.”   The video for The Middle is thoughtful and surreal, as objects levitate off the ground in a fantasy, rose-tinted world.  It’s abandoned, but peaceful.  Working once again with the production company Black Lake who have made clips for OTR, Shallou, Martin Garrix and more, Ukiyo explains how the video for The Middle came about, saying, “‘Ukiyo’ translates literally as ‘floating world’, so this video is a little homage to that. BIGSOUND moves to a free virtual event for 2020!

DOUBLING DOWN ON COMMUNITY, SURVIVAL AND RE-FUTURING
With ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and domestic border closures, BIGSOUND 2020 will now move to be a free virtual event, allowing and creating new opportunities for Australian artists and industry to connect with each other and the international music community from their own homes and workspaces.
Connecting digitally on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October, BIGSOUND 2020 will focus on three pillars of community, survival, and re-futuring, building on its 18-year history of bringing music, art and business together in a new conference program custom-built for the challenges and awakenings that 2020 has delivered.
“BIGSOUND has always been about bringing our business and arts community together and while we were hopeful of being in our spiritual home in the Fortitude Valley live music precinct, 2020 has made other arrangements,” said QMusic CEO Angela Samut.

“It has never been more important for the Australian industry to come together to focus on survival and re-futuring with a program that offers a mainstream conference program, professional development and mental health activities as well as the introduction of The BIGSOUND 50.”
Despite the unfortunate suspension of live showcases, BIGSOUND Festival co-programmers Dom Miller and Ruby-Jean McCabe, alongside First Nations Programmer Alethea Beetson, will still select the best artist applications to spotlight the next crop of emerging Australian music talent to become The BIGSOUND50. The event will double down on its role in shining a global spotlight on the artists of tomorrow and sharing them with the wider music industry to further expand audiences and connect them with potential business relationships.
As well as significant coverage across BIGSOUND and its official online media and playlists, the artists will receive one-on-ones with industry mentors, online meetings with industry professionals, and opportunities to connect with relevant delegates both during and after BIGSOUND in a unique program to help assist their artist growth, career goals, and potential future pathways. The BIGSOUND50 artists will also get first priority application access for BIGSOUND 2021, giving special consideration for attendance and live performing at next year’s event as the industry moves towards a new normal.
The full BIGSOUND program will be released in late September, under the care of Creative Director Janne Scott, Conference Programmer Tom Larkin, and First Nations Producer and Programmer Alethea Beetson.
The innovative BIGSOUND 2020 virtual program of keynote addresses, online workshops, panels and discussions will explore the serious industrial needs of the business of music, bringing together key players to plot our immediate survival, while taking this unique opportunity in history to have the necessary discussions about re-futuring the building blocks on which we operate.
BIGSOUND will have big conversations, from the new commercial realities through to the mental and physical health of industry participants. From equity of revenue to equity of opportunity, from respect for business through to respect for the community on which it’s built, BIGSOUND will ask the questions and prompt the discussions that need to be had to build a strong industry that will walk us forward into the next decade.
BIGSOUND will again feature First Nations House in partnership with Spotify (this year virtually) providing a poignant and important program of domestic and international delegates discussing the future of the music industry, creating virtual performance opportunities and offering valuable connections to those across the music industry from a First Nations perspective.
“BIGSOUND 2019 saw the largest cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists showcasing at BIGSOUND,” said First Nations programmer Alethea Beetson.

“With the move to a virtual platform, we have the potential to showcase First Nations artists throughout the whole year; have the long-term Indigenous led conversations required to dismantle and change the music industry; and continue the work of those who have gone before us in building the sovereign music sector.”


“Working with Spotify, we are able to give more space to First Nations artists from these lands, and also continue our collaborations with our First Nations relatives across the oceans – in particular Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Turtle Island (Canada).”
Delegates who purchased a ticket to the BIGSOUND physical event will receive a full refund with free digital registrations open from today at www.bigsound.org.au. The full BIGSOUND delegate portal will be open for registrants from the end of September for networking and exclusive content.

With crunching guitars, skittering trap drums, emo-inflected vocals, and a falling, crystal-clear melody, ‘Salina’ recalls the group’s earliest experiments in genre and texture. Arriving on the cusp of springtime, ‘Wendouree’ sees the artist lean into sun-drenched alt-pop, brimming with jangly guitars, effervescent synth bursts and organic electronica samples. Immediately setting the tone with its kaleidoscopic sonic palette, ‘Wendouree’ is an exploration in capturing the momentary joy of the present. With its sound tinged in blissful psychedelia, the undulating nature of the track flows effortlessly between placid verses, cascading instrumental layers and infectious harmonies. Allowing the track to build and unfurl with rippling vibrancy, the track shifts gears towards a sparkling finale before receding into an ambient outro submersed in airy tones and soft textures. Speaking of the track, Ben shares: "The main idea is in the line ‘one moment never meant a thing’, referring to those relationships, experiences or situations in your life that, at one point, meant everything to you and you never wanted to lose them. But times have inevitably changed since then and you hold on to different experiences now, and perhaps you will go through that cycle with the stage of your life you're currently in. I think that can be both sobering and comforting in a way, that nothing in your life is ever going to be the way it is right now, and how our perception of our own memories shifts and changes." Following his well-received debut single ‘All In Your Stride’, ‘Wendouree’ is the next exciting chapter in Ben Alpine’s discography. Where are you currently based?

Micra, Sydney’s spellbinding dream-pop outfit, today release their exciting new single ‘Under My Skin’ via Liberation Records. Premiering via Clash Magazine as their Track of the Day, ‘Under My Skin’ comes with the announcement of upcoming shows in Sydney and Wollongong.

Their first release since supporting Lime Cordiale on the band’s recent national tour, ‘Under My Skin’ boasts diverse influences, marrying the underwater psych grooves of Unknown Mortal Orchestra with the dreamy vocals of Beach House. Weaving dark lyrics and melodies with looping synths and production techniques, ‘Under My Skin’ proves Micra are more than the sum of their parts as it explores the idea of “learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

“It’s the realisation that everything that you feel happens under the skin (and) the fixation of time passing, which I tend to focus on a little too much” explains the band’s singer Ivana Kafedjiyska. “All these discomforts and thoughts are intimate sensations under the skin. Sometimes you have to sit in a feeling and let go only by letting it in.” 

The track arrives complete with a beguiling music video by Jessica Long and features serene imagery of the band surrounded by vast desert landscapes and the setting sun. As the clip unfurls, the psychedelic undertones of the track surface and what was once tranquil becomes obscured.

‘Under My Skin’ follows the release of previous singles ‘Chemical Freedom’ and ‘Fuzz Captain’. The dreamy ‘Fuzz Captain’ received adds to triple j unearthed and FBi Radio as well as profiling by tastemakers The Line of Best Fit and Clash Magazine.

Micra are a sonic experiment from Bulgarian born and raised singer/guitarist Ivana Kafedjiyska and Australian guitarist/producer Robbie Cain, who met by serendipitous fortune at an Unknown Mortal Orchestra show after the ticketing Gods coincidentally sat them next to each other. That chance meeting blossomed into a musical kinship which, after months of jamming in a friend’s Sydney basement, led to the formation of Micra. After wooing industry at last year’s BIGSOUND, Micra went on to perform alongside Tyler, The Creator and RÜFÜS DU SOL at Beyond The Valley as well as recently supporting Lime Cordiale on six sold out shows across Australia.

With much more music to come, 2020 is sure to be an exciting year for the duo.
