Kicking off with the 8 track VA001 [Quantum Entanglement] in September, each VA will feature an international cast of groundbreaking artists with a shared passion for electronic music production.
Handing over full creative control to their artists, Unconfined are setting out on an exploration of infinite sonic possibilities across the electronic spectrum. Born in Glasgow, but spreading its roots across the globe – from Turin to Taiwan – the label strays fearlessly from the mainstream.
Founder and label head, Charl Fouche, believes the label’s criteria enables them to release a diverse selection of tracks: “There are so many varieties of techno. At the end of the day it is noises being morphed to sound a certain way. It all comes down to the individual listener and what sounds their ears choose to hear”.
A collaborative effort, Various Artists 001 [Quantum Entanglement] takes a global standpoint, staking out a sound that draws on as many genres as it does international influences. Fresh and eclectic with a complete disregard for the conventional, Unconfined have successfully assembled an impressive horde of unreleased weapons from a who’s who of the hottest names in the scene, before enlisting the talents of internationally revered DJ and producer JoeFarr to master them – and this is just the beginning.
Where are you currently based?
In Govanhill in Glasgow. It’s the most culturally diverse area of Scotland, full of creatives and interesting locations, more languages than anywhere else in the country and a ton of green spaces. We like it here.
Your new EP ‘March Last Year’ will be out August 21, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
This was written at a time when we were holding down a residency in Glasgow’s largest after hours venue. It was a wild time, with us sometimes playing three times in a weekend until ungodly hours of the morning. The creativity, energy and vibes at that time were so exciting and exhausting. We wanted to write some music that we felt represented the venues we were regularly playing in, and so began writing our first house EP. There are many more to come.
How did you go about writing the music?
This was before we had built our studio and so were literally made in our bedrooms. We would take turns moving synths across the east end of Glasgow in the rain in January/February and sitting up late getting frustrated. It was a truly collaborative process, however all three tracks were from Oliver’s genesis. We cracked them eventually and sat on them for a while before deciding to send them out to labels. We wanted to work with someone in Glasgow, so Jackie Knows Karate were a great fit, as they weren’t reticent about a slightly heavier sound which we were feeling at the time.
Where and when did you produce?
Production took place in bedrooms, and mixing anywhere with a plug and headphones. We’ve since built a studio, which over lockdown has been a saviour.
What programs/instruments did you use?
We used Ableton as the DAW. Then a good chunk of the instrumentation is played through a Korg Minilogue (which any Minilogue owner will hear in these tracks immediately!), the Arturia Drumbrute provided some of the ancillary percussion and the rest would have been some finely attuned samples as well as the occasional digital synth.
Please tell us about your studio setup:
Now we have (see attached photo!) a Korg Minilogue, Novation Bassstation II, Artutria Drumbrute, a Fender Jazz bass, a few midi keys, a microphone and plenty of plugins.
How did you approach the recording/production process?
Recently we’ve been beginning tunes separately, bringing them as far as we can individually and then passing them over to each other. The new ears bring new musical ideas as well as new perspectives on the mix itself. We each have particular strengths which the other recognise and respect so it’s a great partnership.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
We’ve been listening to an absolute ton of music during lockdown. Spending countless hours cycling, walking and drinking mean countless hours of imbued culture. There’s always such a wide range of countries and genres always being played in our flat. Ladies on Mars’ edits have been lovely to get you moving in the morning, our pal Wuh Oh has been killing it with his bonkers productions, Fontaines D.C’s new record is unreal, Celeste has been a beautiful vibe, Baba Stiltz been on a lot, Toy Tonics always pump out jams to keep your feet moving, Mura Mesa made a track with Tirzah which has been on repeat the last week or so… This list could go on and on!
What do you like to do away from music?
With what little time we have away from music, we like to drink and eat. Also travelling and arguing with friends about politics. Lockdown has made a lot of that impossible, so we’ve mostly been drinking and eating. We’re also both keen cyclists so we’ve been taking this opportunity to properly explore some of the amazing Scottish scenery all around Glasgow.
What’s planned for the remainder of 2020?
Fuck knows haha. It really depends on what apocalyptic cliche happens next. If we manage to avoid nuclear war or alien invasion we’re going to keep producing at the rate we have over the last few months. We’ve got some serious stuff on the way which we can’t wait to get out there. Also, we’ve set up our own label In The Event of Capture and are lining up some releases on that. Send us demos! intheeventofcapture@wshom.club.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
We eat anything. We hangout (more?) anywhere. Just name the time and place. We’ll bring the cutlery.

2021 Bluesfest can’t wait until next Easter on April 1 – 5th at the beautiful green Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm located 10 minutes north of Byron Bay.
Bluesfest continues to make history with its second Artist Announcement for 2021 – It is the festival’s first ever All Australian announcement and it’s something to sing about.
Adding to the already impressive line up are some of Australia’s greatest artists including TASH SULTANA and ZIGGY ALBERTS, who are both playing on Easter Saturday, as well as National Treasure, KEV CARMODY to name a few.
Bluesfest will be Tash Sultana’s only East Coast festival play, and will bring in the new band, “I’ve got to a point where the music I’ve written is beyond the capabilities of looping so I’ve decided to get a backing band to play the written parts live and I’m looking forward to performing them at Bluesfest next Easter.” says Tash Sultana.
Ziggy Alberts will be playing all new material he has been creating in lockdown. “Stoked to be back at Bluesfest 2021! I love this festival and we had such a great time back in 2018. I’m looking forward to coming out strong after some time away from touring. See ya’ll there!” says Ziggy Alberts.
Kev Carmody will show why he is regarded as a National Treasure. His new album, ‘Cannot Buy My Soul’ features guest appearances by Jimmy Barnes, Kasey Chambers, John Butler, The Waifs, Tex Perkins, Troy Cassar-Daley and lots more -this could be one hell of a jam!!
When Blues legends RUSSELL MORRIS and IAN MOSS take to the stage the Bluesfest crowd will roar.
IAN MOSS, best known as a founding member of Cold Chisel and now widely regarded as one of the best Blues guitarists in Australia, is scheduled to perform directly before Jimmy Barnes on Easter Sunday. “We are going to tear the place apart. They’ll be a lot of great Australian bands and artists hitting those stages.” says Jimmy Barnes
Rock veteran and the original “real thing” RUSSELL MORRIS spectacularly re-launched his career when he released his Blues trilogy; which features the Platinum selling ‘Shark Mouth’, the ARIA nominated ‘Van Diemen’s Land’ and the ARIA Award winner ‘Red Dirt – Red Heart’ [2012-2018]. Russell will play tracks from his latest album ‘Black and Blue Heart’ and this is one Blues banga of a show that is sure to be packed out.
Yorta Yorta man BRIGGS is the most powerful rapper in the country, HIATUS KAIYOTE is selling out 2000 seater venues and KIM CHURCHILL not only a current triple j favourite, he is also the most successful Bluesfest Busking competition winner who has now gone on to achieve national recognition, a record label and is touring nationally. Add MAMA KIN SPENDER and ALL OUR EXES LIVE IN TEXAS and the line-up is unquestionably a “top-shelf’ reflection of Australia’s best.
Commenting on the announcement Festival Director, Peter Noble OAM says “There’s a number of all Australian line up announcements to come that includes ‘real’ headliners, Indigenous artists and Blues n Roots artists. We are setting ourselves up to put on another great Bluesfest albeit in a brand new way. There will be challenges, and we expect to be presenting a festival with a lower capacity and potentially outdoors in order to have a safe event. It is sad for us to see that a number of festivals will not go ahead. However, we are working with Government to present a safe event and be part of the return of ‘live’ music in this country. Whilst it is disheartening to hear that Woodford and Port Fairy Folk Festivals feel that the challenge of presenting is something they don’t want to take on right now, and which is totally understandable, it doesn’t mean that events cannot return, and I believe it is important for Bluesfest to be a part of that return and to help lead the way.”
Bluesfest is in regular communications with Government regarding the Bluesfest COVID-19 Safety Plan that has been lodged. Bluesfest look forward to updating everyone very soon with more information regarding their Safety Plan for a COVID-19 safe Bluesfest experience.
This is the first ANNOUNCEMENT OF MAJOR all Australian artists with more to come from Bluesfest.
All ticket types and Add-Ons are on-sale now.
For further information on the line-up or artists please see here.
Bluesfest 2021 is being held from 1 – 5 April 2021. Tickets are on sale now via Moshtix.

Label boss and global DJ legend Carl Cox steps up to the decks once again, only this time to create a compelling mix comprising exclusively of Awesome Soundwave releases – out August 28th. The release coincides with a special Awesome Soundwave stream with Mysteryland Festival on August 29, which includes a set from Carl.
Carl’s sets are renowned for diversity, innovation and his ever-present dance floor propulsion and this exclusive ASW set is further evidence of the irrepressible and exuberant nature of one of the world’s greatest DJs.
“When we started this label I wanted it to be about supporting live artists”, says Carl “You know, the ones who are willing to explore new sounds and ideas from the ground up and then go out and play it all absolutely LIVE! I feel this is the way of the future, the excitement and rawness of a live set can’t be described in words. When you go to a party and see Saytek jamming with all the machines or Honeysmack set up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DANCEFLOOR slamming the acid bangers out rapid fire it brings me back to the old days when there were no rules.””
“I felt it was a good time to release this mix as a document of where we are at right now, it shows the diversity of sound and talent we have already been supporting and it’s a nice personal record of how far the label has come already! and there is so much more to come!”
Originally recorded for the Awesome Soundwave LIVE series presented by Beatport as an online festival earlier in the year, Carl felt this set was a great reflection of the strength of the material released so far through his and partner Christopher Coe’s label.
This set is a celebration of how far ASW has come in the last two years and a signpost to even more exciting music ahead. With tracks from every artist who has released on ASW thus far, and presented by Carl in such an exciting and different way, it shows how musically diverse, uncompromising and interesting the label is. In a time when many labels are following the formula of releasing EPs from producer DJs, ASW stands alone in its quest to shine a light on artists who perform live and who have something more to say in their creative scope.
The fact that ASW insists on releasing albums in a time when everyone else is focussed on single EPs and single tracks shows the commitment this label has to giving the artist room for expression that goes beyond the dance floor. This is Carl’s vision, he didn’t want to start another DJ led label, he wanted to create something altogether more expansive and encompassing.
Starting in 2018 with Christopher Coe’s album MNTNS of SLNC as the benchmark for this new vision, Carl and Christopher set about creating something awesome. And here we are.
We are proud to present Awesome Soundwave

Taking their music to the next level, ATR have called in renowned producer Steve James (Red Engine Recording) to take care of the engineering and mixing – and with names such as The Screaming Jets, The Angels, Cold Chisel and Airbourne under his belt, there is no doubt this one is going to be big. Without You is guaranteed to have you singing out loud so get keen, this is one you will want on high rotation.

Until then, crank up Without You and get on board the Among The Restless train, it will be stopping at all streaming services on the 15th August 2020.
“The debut single screams attitude with its killer lyrics and catchy hooks. Add to this, dirty riffs driving drums and a weighty bassline, Someone Else will draw you in for the duration then spit you out with a big slap at its colossal climax.” – Silver Tiger Media.
“Such a good debut single! Awesome production all around excited to hear more from you guys.” – Kabir
“Killer song, love it. Instantly stuck on my head!” – CH
