Audio Obscura makes a stunning festival debut

by the partae August 29, 2024
written by the partae

The very first edition of the Audio Obscura Festival was nothing short of a sensational success, thanks to a perfect mix of contemporary art and cultural heritage. The festival presented an impressive lineup featuring big names such as Adriatique, Partiboi69, Chris Stussy, The Martinez Brothers, and many more. Moreover, the festival marked a notable first for both Audio Obscura and the historic Van Nelle Fabriek, which opened its doors for the very first time as an impressive event venue with both outdoor and indoor stages.

The Audio Obscura Festival put the Van Nelle Fabriek on the map as a Rotterdam festival location, with a mix of international headliners and local talent. With names like Dixon, Carlita, and AMÉMÉ, the festival delivered a world-class lineup, while Rotterdam icons like Benny Rodrigues, Cincity, Moody Mehran, and Suze Ijó ensured strong local representation. The spectacular performances created an atmosphere that made the temperature rise early in the day, that even some rain throughout the day couldn’t extinguish.

The Van Nelle Fabriek, originally a production site for coffee, tea, and tobacco, has grown into an architectural icon and UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique location, where past and future come together, offers bright and flexible spaces, which welcomed thousands of festival-goers last Saturday. It’s no surprise that Audio Obscura, always on the lookout for special locations and new talent worldwide, has once again pushed the boundaries with their first foray into the world of festivals.

“We are very proud that we have been able to convert our many years of experience of organizing events at unique locations into our first festival at UNESCO World Heritage site the Van Nelle Fabriek in Rotterdam. From the energetic and fun audience to the artists who all delivered, from the production and logistics that turned out as we had planned and from no calamities to all the crowds positive feedback. Hopefully we have built a foundation for years to come in Rotterdam.” – Audio Obscura

The festival site offered a total of four stages with a mix of both indoor and outdoors: Under the Bridges, Tabaksfabriek, The Pit, and the Rotterdam stage. The Under the Bridges stage immediately caught the eye. Diagonal transport bridges, which normally connect the various buildings of the Van Nelle Fabriek, formed the symbolic heart of the Audio Obscura Festival. The Rotterdam stage, hosted by Heineken Silver & Cloud 8, served as a stage for showcasing Dutch talent. Cloud 8, born in the legendary Rotterdam Suicide Club, created an open-minded atmosphere where creativity was central. Under the guidance of Cloud 8’s own Cincity, attendees embarked on a musical trip full of soulful afrobeats and Afro house.

At The Pit stage, fans could enjoy an energetic mix of dynamic techno and electro from artists like Dax J b2b Daria Kolosova, Lucky Done Gone b2b Moody Mehran, and Partiboi69. Additionally, Dixon and Adriatique brought their signature sound to the industrial setting of the Tabaksfabriek stage, where melodic tones and a unique visual experience came together.

Audio Obscura is known for bringing together unique talent at the most extraordinary locations, and with this first festival edition, they have once again outdone themselves. The Audio Obscura Festival has positioned itself as a new highlight on the Dutch festival calendar. Pre-registration for the 2025 edition is already open via www.audio-obscura.com.

On October 17, 18, 19, and 20, Audio Obscura returns to the RAW Factory for three daytime events, two night events, and a 24-hour Innervisions with  me and Dixon event. Visitors will be treated to the cutting-edge sounds of underground legends including The Martinez Brothers, Seth Troxler, Partiboi69, Maceo Plex, Honey Dijon, and more. Tickets are already available via www.audio-obscura.com.

DJ AWARDS 2024 reveal nominees & Industry awards

by the partae August 29, 2024
written by the partae
Date: 02/10/24
Location: Club Chinois
Voting: https://djawards.com/vote-overview/

Following a four year break, the iconic DJ AWARDS is back for its 23rd Anniversary on October 2nd at Club Chinois in Ibiza. Ahead of that much anticipated event, the independently assembled nominees can now be revealed.

The DJ AWARDS were founded in 1998 by José Pascual and Lenny Krarup, and since then have been recognised as ‘an Oscars for electronic dance music’. Now under new ownership and with substantial investment, the awards are a vital way to celebrate and support global DJ culture and recognise high achievement across the whole sector with high-profile ceremonies that platform the best of the best in several different categories.

The theme for this first edition of the DJ AWARDS in its new era is Unity, which has always been a core principle of dance music. This theme reflects the need, which is greater than ever now, to bring people together, to celebrate our differences, to create new bonds both personally, musically and emotionally between people from all backgrounds and all different areas of the music industry.

Says Andy Grant, new owner of DJ AWARDS, “Music has power – the power to unite us, to cheer us up, to give us the chills, to instantly remind us of a long lost memory, to create a vibe, to set a mood, or to even motivate change. That is why we have chosen the theme of Unity for the DJ Awards 2024 reboot with the launch of our Best Dancefloor Memory user generated competition which will see everyone everywhere share their top memories via Instagram, tagging @thedjawards and our panel of judges will select someone from any corner of the globe to come to Ibiza and collect a genuine DJ Award that they can keep on the mantelpiece forever”

VOTE HERE

As such, a diverse, inclusive and independent industry panel has been assembled in order to draw up these nominations to ensure they are as fair and representative as possible. The categories to be voted on are long time genre-cornerstones of electronic music including House, Tech House, Drum & Bass and Techno, while the undeniably influential return of Progressive House and Trance will also be represented, as will newer breakthrough genres Organic House and Afro, both of which have become standout creative niches with vast followings all over the world and several pioneering new artists leading the charge.

The more main room sounds of International DJ will also be featured, while the world’s finest Live Acts will also be represented next to a Breakthrough category that looks to recognise the most exciting new names to have made their mark since the last awards four years ago.

Alongside these categories will be a comprehensive selection of Industry Awards with
winners voted for by industry professionals from the Association For Electronic Music (AFEM). They are split into two sections, firstly Global featuring Global Festival, What’s Hot Global – Outstanding Global Tour Award, Eye on…’USA’, Play It Back which is for the best charity contribution or outstanding achievement within or outside the electronic music scene, and Most Memorable Dance Floor Moment. The second section has a focus on the White Isle with Ibiza Track of the Summer, Ibiza Icon and Ibiza Party of the Summer.
The countdown is now on to what will be a historic night that recognises the most outstanding talents, musical innovations, and key contributions made in the electronic music community over the last few years.

SNAKEHIPS & EARTHGANG SHARE SNAKEGANG EP VOLUME. 1

by the partae August 29, 2024
written by the partae

UK production and DJ duo Snakehips and Atlanta hip hop duo EARTHGANG return today with the deluxe edition of their collaborative EP, SNAKEGANG EP Volume. 1 (Deluxe), featuring their brand new track ‘Don’t Rush’. LISTEN HERE.

A disco-infused cut, ‘Don’t Rush’ is an expansion on the project’s genre-subverting sonic experience in another showcase of the group’s creative dynamism and chemistry. A bold moment of disco-meets-hip-hop, ‘Don’t Rush’ is a high-energy anthem, with EARTHGANG’s signature flow and Snakehips’ vibrant instrumental.

Of the bonus track, Snakehips share ‘Don’t Rush’ was another demo that we started but didn’t quite finish in time to put on the SNAKEGANG EP. The response to the EP has been so great though so we figured we’d fix it up and drop it as a little bonus track for the fans as it was one of our favourites of the various other demos we had. It’s a bit of a party tune and has more of a disco kind of groove than the rest of the EP. Olu sings on the hook and the verses are really fun, it just feels like a vibe”. EARTHGANG continue, “This song was made in a space of just appreciating the life we have. Understanding the ebbs and flows of our human experience. Life is sweet shawty. We have to enjoy every moment and trust in divine timing.”

SNAKEGANG EP Volume. 1 is exhilarating from the first note, where Snakehips and EARTHGANG enter a new chapter at the pinnacle of their artistry. This dynamic EP highlights their eclectic collective talent, combining diverse sounds, compelling lyrics, and infectious energy – driven by their extraordinary creativity in the studio and on stage. Featuring releases ‘GLIMMER’ and ‘Been A Minute…’, featuring Sinéad Harnett, the EP was met with widespread press recognition from the likes of Billboard, Rolling Stone, HYPEBEAST, Consequence, Acclaim Magazine and Fader, alongside radio support from triple j, CADA, 3RRR, HIT FM among others.

Oliver Lee and James Carter, the celebrated UK production and DJ duo known as Snakehips, have amassed over 2 billion streams, enchanting global audiences with their distinctive and evolving blend of house, disco, funk, pop, R&B, and hip hop. Their creative journey began in a Hong Kong sake bar in 2010, culminating in the 2015 smash hit ‘All My Friends’ featuring Tinashe and Chance The Rapper, which achieved platinum status in multiple countries and earned them the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song. In May 2023, the pair released their debut studio album, never worry, which featured collaborations with artists such as Muni Long, Daya, EARTHGANG, BIA, Lucky Daye, Tinashe, and Kilo Kish. Their single ‘Solitude’ with BIA & Lucky Daye swiftly ascended to the top of the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic chart. Renowned for their versatility, Snakehips have collaborated with Aminé, H.E.R., MØ, ZAYN, and Anderson .Paak among others.

EARTHGANG, the Atlanta-born Grammy-nominated duo comprising Olu (Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (DocturDot), has been redefining hip-hop since before their signing to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records in 2017. Known for innovative albums, EPs, and mixtapes, they collaborate widely, including with J. Cole, Mac Miller, Snoop Dogg, Young Thug, Future, Kehlani, Wiz Khalifa, CeeLo Green, Gorillaz, and more. Their music explores R&B, jazz, gospel, and funk, traversing deep societal themes and existential questions. Their 2022 sophomore album Ghetto Gods explores self-discovery, spirituality, and social justice over buoyant southern beats. Their recent project EARTHGANG vs the Algorithm, featuring EPs RIP Human Art and ROBOPHOBIA, challenges digital-age creativity and artistic expression, solidifying their influence in contemporary music.

SNAKEGANG EP Volume. 1 (Deluxe) is out now, buy/stream it here.

THE GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL 2024 HUGE LINE-UP IS HERE

by the partae August 27, 2024
written by the partae

Are you ready for the madcap chaos of Australia’s largest travelling music festival? Good Things season returns with a head-spinning lineup fit for a fever dream. Across three East Coast dates, this year’s Good Things Festival will deliver a trip down the rabbit hole with a stacked bill of international heavyweights, old favourites, hungry up-and-comers, and Aussie staples. And in a boon for younger attendees, Sydney’s Centennial Park festival date will be a 16+ event for the first time!

No one has cultivated a cult of personality quite like KORN. As the coveted headliners for Good Things Festival 2024, the Californian nu-metal pioneers will be celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of their landmark self-titled debut album and a career trajectory that speak volumes: two GRAMMY® Award wins, multi-platinum album certifications, and over 40 million records sold worldwide. Continually pushing the limits of the alternative, metal, and rock across their back catalogue, KORN’s unwavering sonic vision incorporates everything from dubstep and hip-hop to the bagpipe sections of frontman Jonathan Davis. Forever for the freaks, KORN’s Good Things appearance will find them in fine form and off the leash.

Seeing SUM 41 will be a bittersweet occasion for dedicated Aussie fans, as the Good Things Festival acts as the band’s last-ever ‘Tour of the setting Sum’ tour Down Under. Pulling from their formative album trinity—All Killer No Filler (2001), Does This Look Infected? (2002), and Chuck (2004)—along with their recent Heaven :x: Hell double-LP, the Canadian rockers are determined to go out with a bang, one befitting their status as a beacon of millennial domination. Come for the high-energy pop punk, and stay for the heavy metal anthems.

Speaking of anthems, it’s hard to deny the impact VIOLENT FEMMES have had on the broad history of alternative music. The Milwaukee outfit have been festival mainstays throughout their awe-inspiring 40-year career, and direct influences on Pink, John Cusack, Mark Morris, The Pixies, and more. German heavy arena sensation ELECTRIC CALLBOY known for their viral hits like Hypa Hypa, We Got The Moves, RATATATA and their pulsing cover of Cascada’s Everytime We Touch have proven that the group’s blend of retro pop synths, arena rock, and metalcore is both a recipe for chart-topping success and captivating audiences worldwide.

After bringing their own curated The World Is A Vampire Festival to Australia last year, and the recent release of the band’s thirteenth studio album, Aghori Mhori Mei, The Smashing Pumpkins frontman BILLY CORGAN will wow the Good Things Festival crowd with a spirited set supported by The Delta Riggs as his backing band. Festival punters will be treated to tracks from CORGAN’s expansive solo catalogue as well as songs he’s written for The Smashing Pumpkins. MASTODON have racked up numerous accolades that transcend their sludge metal origins. Alongside collaborations with Game of Thrones, Adult Swim, and DC Comics, the Atlanta quartet finally took home a GRAMMY® Award after six career nods. 2021’s Hushed & Grim double-LP took meditations on grief and transformed them into moments of melodic mourning and raging bursts of energy. Guitarist/songwriter KERRY KING will bring a taste of his trademark fury to the Good Things Festival for 2024. With KING’s first solo LP outside of thrash titans Slayer, From Hell I Rise, unleashed on the world, expect a dose of blunt-force riffage and pointed lyrical themes with some Slayer classics thrown in as the kicker.

The long-awaited return of THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM to Australian shores has been almost a decade in the making. With the release of their highly anticipated comeback album, History Books, in October last year, it’s now Australia’s turn to be a part of the band’s rebirth. Newfound ARIA Hall of Famers JET will also get their shine on as they take to the stage to celebrate the recent twentieth anniversary of their multi-platinum debut album, 2003’s Get Born. Fans can expect to hear radio rock hits like Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Rollover DJ, and more. With their reputation as seasoned pros and one of the country’s most incredible live acts, punk rockers THE LIVING END will get the crowd pumping with iconic anthems like Second Solution and Prisoner of Society, making their only live shows for 2024 ones to remember. After playing their seminal Bricks Are Heavy LP on the road last year, 90s punk icons L7 return to give audiences another taste of Californian riot grrrl history including favourites like Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Wargasm and more.

Sydney futurists NORTHLANE are global ambassadors for Australian metal, known for their exhilarating live show and unrivalled creative expression. With consecutive ARIA Award wins and #1 chart debuts already in the bag, the band’s latest Mirrors Edge EP is their most daring effort yet. Fans will also see BOWLING FOR SOUP on their first trip Down Under in over fifteen years. The Texan pop punkers are fresh off a pair of 2024 Download Festival performances, and celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their fan-favourite A Hangover You Don’t Deserve LP. While 2024 already belongs to ALPHA WOLF, their Good Things appearance is set to cap off the metalcore crew’s most successful year to date. The Melbourne quintet just wrapped up a completely sold-out Australian headline tour following the release of their acclaimed third full-length, Half Living Things.

For the alternative rockers, Orlando emo sensation SLEEPING WITH SIRENS are no strangers to devoted Australian crowds, and their Good Things Festival set will deliver on stratospheric hooks and huge sing-a-longs. Not to be outdone, Brisbane’s THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT will bring their emotionally charged performance to the festival stage, anchored by frontman Clint Boge’s powerful croon. 90s flagbearers 311 were last in the country in 1998 and have since maintained their standing as one of the genre’s most entertaining outfits with a groove-laden sound dipping into rap, reggae, and funk.

Award-winning songwriter, artist, and novelist AViVA will rally her “Outsider” community to the call with her idiosyncratic spin on pop-rock immediacy. Sacramento’s DESTROY BOYS will be eager to unleash tracks from their brand new Funeral Soundtrack #4 LP and expand on their bratty punk origins. With a career spanning half a century, legacy rockers DRAGON will showcase their heavy prog pedigree and penchant for soul-flavoured melodies. Meanwhile, DIY rock troubadour FRANK TURNER AND THE SLEEPING SOULS will mark another return to Australia as part of the Good Things Festival, this time supporting his acclaimed new album, Undefeated.

Pennsylvanian outfit FROM ASHES TO NEW have climbed to the front of the rock vanguard, embracing the freedom of hybridity and experimenting with hard rock, hip-hop, electronic, and alternative sounds. Known for stretching genre descriptors into alluring new forms, alt artist GRANDSON has netted over one billion streams and a dizzying list of high-profile collaborators including Mike Shinoda, Travis Barker, and Tom Morello. Backing up with another trip Down Under following 2023’s ‘The Midnight Demon Club’ tour, Cape Cod iconoclasts HIGHLY SUSPECT will bring their rule-breaking rock philosophy to the festival stage with cuts from their shiny new full-length, As Above, So Below. Swedish heavy purveyors IMMINENCE will introduce Aussie crowds to the uncompromising alt-metalcore vision of their bludgeoning fifth full-length,The Black—this is one set metalheads do not want to miss.

KILLING HEIDI will throw it back to the early 00s when their album debut Reflector became a four-time ARIA winner and mega-smash single Weir was an inescapable earworm, playing the record in full for the Good Things Festival crowd. As one of Britain’s breakout heavy exports, LOATHE have built a reputation for their intense, multi-media live show, as seen on a recent North American tour run supporting Knocked Loose. Mixing metalcore with shades of electronica, pop, and post-hardcore on their stunning debut full-length, Secrets Of The Future, Sydney newcomers RELIQA will dazzle with their intricate take on progressive metal stylings. Influenced by early 90s and 00s pop-punk, TAYLOR ACORN’s sound is imbued with youthful exuberance and relatability, tackling mental health struggles and head-on with catchy hooks and earnest vulnerability.

2024 also marks the return of the talented STAGE 666 Artists and their carnivalesque Freak Show lounge. Witness the knife-throwing, gravity defying stunts of host Captain Ruin, or be amazed by Princess Tweedle Needle’s daring feats of bodily transgression as the “princess of pain” performs the ‘human pincushion’ act, skewering her flesh with glee, swinging a beer keg with her lady bits. Direct from the underground nightclubs of Berlin, you don’t want to miss out on STAGE 666’s guest star!

THE PRODIGY RETURN TO AUSTRALIA IN 2025

by the partae August 27, 2024
written by the partae

Pioneers of the electronic music scene, The Prodigy, today announce their return to Australia in Feb 2025. Presented by Astral People, Handsome Tours & Double J, they will be playing three shows at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, Brisbane’s Riverstage, and Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. Pre-sale tickets for The Prodigy will be available from Tue 27 Aug at 11 AM (local), with the general on-sale on Fri 30 Aug at 11 AM (local). See dates and details below.

Returning five years after the tragic passing of the group’s vocalist Keith Flint, just weeks after they toured the country, the group comes armed with seven seminal albums, and a reputation as one of the world’s most visceral and incendiary live bands. Bringing together raves and metalheads to honour both their past and their present.

The “Godfathers of Rave” aka Liam Howlett, Keith Flint, and Maxim have solidified their status as legends in the music industry with a career spanning over three decades. The Prodigy are renowned for pioneering the big beat genre, blending elements of rave, techno, and industrial music. The group, initially featuring vocalist Keith Flint and MC Maxim, gained international acclaim with their debut album, Experience (1992). Their breakthrough came with the album Music for the Jilted Generation (1994), which showcased their innovative sound and rebellious spirit. The Prodigy’s third album, The Fat of the Land (1997), solidified their status as electronic music legends, featuring hits like ‘Firestarter’ and ‘Breathe’, and topping charts worldwide.

Over the years, The Prodigy has continued to evolve their sound while maintaining a raw, energetic edge. They have released several successful albums, including Invaders Must Die (2009) and The Day Is My Enemy (2015), further cementing their influence on the electronic music scene. Known for their electrifying live performances, The Prodigy has headlined major festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella and won many awards during the span of their career including 2x Grammy Award nominations, 2x Brit Awards for Best British Dance Act, 3x MTV Video Music Awards, 2x Kerrang! Awards and 5x MTV Europe Music Awards.

Despite the tragic loss of Keith Flint in 2019, Liam Howlett and Maxim returned to the stage again in 2022 pushing the boundaries with their live show once again headlining festivals around the world with a fitting tribute to Keith during ‘Firestarter’. They remain as one of the most successful electronic groups of all time, selling an estimated 25 million records worldwide and seven consecutive #1 albums in the UK.

Jeff Rosenstock Announces Australian Tour

by the partae August 27, 2024
written by the partae

Handsome Tours are utterly giddy to bring everyone’s favourite punk Jeff Rosenstock to our shores in November. The tour answers the calls of innumerable Australians busting to experience his acclaimed 2023 LP HELLMODE, irl.

Jeff Rosenstock’s first Australian tour in seven years will kick off in Sydney on November 7 taking in a couple of all ages shows and a big Melbourne Croxton Bandroom singalong before it concludes in Perth.

Released on Polyvinyl last year, HELLMODE is the fifth studio album from the prolific singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Described by mega fan Anthony Fantano as ‘versatile, dynamic and deep’, the album was received with equally rapturous enthusiasm by the international Rosenstock fanbase.

Rosenstock’s sincere depictions of physical anxiety, survival and self care cut through all the genre’s cliches. It’s not all shouty slacker punk, despite his pedigree as part of the riotous musical collective Bomb the Music Industry!
“Speak, even if it feels weird” Rosenstock gently implores on one of the album’s more therapeutic interludes ‘DOUBT’. “Kill all the doubt or it’ll never go away, kill all the doubt or it’ll waste your day“, is frankly the most practical suggestion ever imbued into a catchy chorus.

Earnest and immune to affectation, it’s not really surprising that Rosenstock’s music still manages to end up on all the end of year lists from the gatekeepers of cool. Similarly his live performances are notorious for being a total judgement free zone.

Come see a show, let rip and sing along. Even if it feels weird.

Ticket pre-sale begins Wednesday 28 August at 2pm local
General on-sale starts on Thursday 29 August at 2pm local

Split Works Bring The Asian Music Revolution to BIGSOUND 2024

by the partae August 27, 2024
written by the partae
As the global music industry continues to evolve, few have been as instrumental in bridging the vibrant music scenes of Asia with the Western world as Archie Hamilton, Founder and Managing Director of Split Works. This September, Hamilton and his team will showcase the future of Asian music with a takeover at BIGSOUND 2024 International House, featuring groundbreaking artists MEMI (South Korea), 1300 (Korea-Australia), Lunadira (Malaysia), Lur:(China), Loft Beach (China), and B E N N (Taiwan).

For nearly two decades, Hamilton has been at the helm of one of Asia’s most influential independent music companies. From its inception, Split Works has been a trailblazer in the developing Asian scene, starting out as one of the region’s first promoters running international tours as far back as 2006 and creating one of the very first Asian festivals in Shanghai in 2007. Now the company offers a full spectrum of services – from festival curation and creation to artist management, label and distro services, brand consultancy and Asian touring. Hamilton’s journey is a testament to the power of vision, endurance and an unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries in an industry that often resists change.
“Building a full-service independent music company in Asia is not for the faint-hearted,” says Hamilton. “You need that combination of drive, timing, a bit of luck and a willingness to learn and adjust as things develop. We created Split Works because we truly believed in our mission to introduce our favourite artists from home to audiences in China and Southeast Asia that we knew instinctively had the potential to become fans. Now we are excited to give Asian artists the platform they deserve on the global stage.”

Split Works has run more than 600 tours in over 60 cities across Asia, collaborating over the years with artists like Sonic Youth, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Hans Zimmer, Grimes, Mika and Cigarettes After Sex. What truly sets Split Works apart is its dual mission: to bring Western talent to Asia and to propel Asian artists onto the world stage. In 2023, Split Works brought 15 artists and a delegation of more than 150 from Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea to the inaugural SXSW Sydney, taking over the big stage in Tumbalong Park for a two-day showcase that attracted over 10,000 super and soon-to-be super fans—an achievement that underscores Hamilton’s unique understanding of both markets.
This September, Split Works is set to make waves again with another Asian Music Takeover, this time at BIGSOUND 2024. Featuring an eclectic lineup of future superstars from around the region, this event will not only highlight the incredible talent coming out of the region but also reaffirm Split Works’ position as a trusted pathway for Asian artists looking to break into Western markets.

“Split Works isn’t just about bringing Western artists to Asia; it’s about showcasing the diverse talent of Asian artists on global stages,” remarks Hamilton. “The response we received at SXSW in 2023 demonstrates the increasing global appeal of Asian music outside of just the superstar K-Pop artists, and Australia is a natural next step for us. We’ve seen firsthand that Asian audiences and music discovery fans in Australia are eager to connect with these incredibly brilliant artists and discover a scene that truly resonates with them. This is about building a community where these artists can thrive and where fans can find a sound and a scene that belongs to them.”

In addition to its extensive touring experience, (via the company’s booking agency arm Scorched Asia) Split Works is also behind Asia’s much-loved music festival, Concrete and Grass, which became a staple of the Chinese music scene from 2015 to 2019. Known for its eclectic lineups and unique community of Chinese outsiders, Concrete and Grass has introduced thousands of fans to a diverse range of artists from around the world. This year, the festival returns in a bite-sized package with a special show at Brisbane’s iconic Tivoli on September 6, 2024, as part of its ongoing mission to bridge Eastern and Western musical cultures.

As Split Works continues to expand its global footprint, the company’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange through music remains its guiding principle. Whether it’s a run of arena dates in Northeast Asia, a global partnership bringing together Chinese crypto with world renowned composers or a showcase at BIGSOUND in Brisbane, Hamilton and Split Works are leading the charge in shaping the future of the global music industry.

Heisenberg Principle’s Greg: Music, Fencing, Filmmaking Insights

by the partae August 27, 2024
written by the partae

Greg, can you share how your diverse musical background has influenced the sound of Heisenberg Principle?

I think it has given me a wide palette of music styles to paint with. While my experience with classical, jazz and blues music may not be readily heard in the music, ideas of structure and form in many of the songs takes it’s foundation in these different styles.

Having played classical violin in three symphony orchestras and been a lead singer in two original bands, how do these experiences shape your songwriting process?

My songs usually start with a lyric or a melody line that I can’t get out of my head. At times I am haunted by a phrase or even a few notes from a key composition or past bands that makes it’s way into my brain. If it sticks for longer than a few days, then I know I might be on to something.

How did learning guitar during the COVID-19 pandemic impact your music, and what inspired you to write over 60 original songs during this period?

It was a soul searching time, particularly working and home schooling my kids and being made redundant in this period. It did give me less distractions in some ways, and allowed me to see experiences from my past or things I had seen in a new light though, which I drew upon in my songwriting process. I did not learn any cover songs, I basically learnt guitar to accompany all the stories that come forth from my head.

Your upcoming album “Icarus” explores themes of pushing boundaries and experiencing falls. Can you elaborate on the personal experiences that inspired these songs?

An example would be going to places like Romania and Poland, often as the only Australian fencer, being ostracised on a Polish fencing training camp that was pretty hardcore being blasted with firehoses and pushing through to compete against insurmountable odds, and then failing. Or going to the community of Ramingining and making an award winning short horror film with a onesie, a knife and half a bottle of sauce. These kind of experiences have built my character of pushing through with blind optimism, which have served me well in other areas of my life.

You’ve worked extensively with Yolngu people in North-East Arnhem Land. How has this experience and learning Yolngu Matha language influenced your music?

In many ways this experience have given me an entirely different perspective on nature, as well as collective thinking which is different from the individualistic mindset in mainstream society. Learning Yolngu Matha also opened my eyes to  a different understanding of things that is often difficult to translate but includes an understanding of finding balance within families, relationships and nature. These concepts have affected me deeply and are reflected in the duality of perspectives in some of my lyrics.

Can you tell us more about your journey from being ranked No. 2 Sabre fencer in Australia to becoming a musician? How do these two worlds intersect for you?

Fencing can be seen as a discipline like music requiring lots of practice. Tempo and timing in fencing is also crucial and my coach used to do a sequence with me he called a song, with a certain tempo. This sense of timing and persistence is something that intersects with my approach to music.

With over 30 short films in comedy, horror, and drama genres under your belt, how has your filmmaking experience contributed to your music and its storytelling elements?

In all my films, have a strong narrative approach, seeking to tell stories in new ways. My music is like an extension of this in another medium. Recently, I have enjoyed blending the two with making a series of three video clips for my music, each telling a story based on the lyrics of the song.

Your music draws on a wide range of influences, from Wet Leg to ACDC. How do you blend these diverse styles into a cohesive sound for Heisenberg Principle?

I think it is important to recognise if something is serving the song or not. Like in filmmaking, when you might be in love with a certain shot but it doesn’t help the story, these shots need to go. Some aspects like power chords similar to ACDC can help the song move along and establish a groove, but the melody might take you elsewhere. Finding the balance of how to blend different things in new ways that serve the creative vision is where I think the heart of creativity lies today.

The concept of your track “110” involves helping a friend through a bad LSD trip. Can you share more about the story behind this song and its creative process?

I was overseas at the time and my friend took LSD after being rejected by a girl. Being in a bad frame of mind at the outset I think lead to him having a bad trip, running naked around the hotel room and wanting to call his mum. I reassured him and convinced him it might not be the best time to call his mum. He kept thinking he would never be normal again, which became the lead in to the chorus. The last verse is about the next day when I climbed table top mountain in Cape Town and we got lost in the dark on top of the mountain and my other friend was freaking out. The story of this experience is what makes up the lyrics.

How has working with Byron Bay-based producer Keefe Davidson West shaped the production of your album “Icarus”?

His experience has definitely lifted the production, being an experienced producer who was able to see where the song could go. He is a much better guitarist than me also, and crafted the lead solos on melody lines I would sing to him. Through recording all 11 songs on the album in a similar way over zoom, we have built a great partnership to put the album together. I also recruited my wife Ella to record backing vocals on the Icarus track.

You’re preparing to launch your album and have created several video clips to support it. What can fans expect from these visual elements and the album’s overall narrative?

The video clips and the album were a labour of love, from spending countless hours making wings for the Icarus video clip, to filming a clip featuring my two children and wife, and pushing to the limit what can be achieved on a limited budget. The album overall is optimistic, thoughtful and humorous at times, presenting tales from life and relationships. There is a lot of deadly earnest music out there, I am hoping this provides something of a breath of fresh air.

With a sound that feels nostalgic yet refreshingly original, what do you hope listeners take away from your music, especially with your upcoming album “Icarus”?

Ultimately, I hope that people will see something of themselves in the music, whether it is a relationship they have experienced, or problem they have had to overcome. I hope people will also smile at times at some of the in-jokes and feel inspired to dance sometimes.

R3HAB and Sophie and The Giants’ New Single “All Night”

by the partae August 26, 2024
written by the partae

Artists: R3HAB, Sophie and the Giants
Title: All Night
Label: CYB3RPVNK, Universal Music

Download / Stream

Multi-platinum artists R3HAB and Sophie and the Giants have teamed up for their new single “All Night,” a breath of fresh, disco-infused dance-pop air in a world that can sometimes feel heavy. The track pairs Sophie‘s nostalgic, pop-style vocals with R3HAB‘s upbeat, dynamic production, creating an infectious, energetic gem with a devil-may-care attitude and filled with good vibes. Remaking Blue‘s platinum worldwide pop hit from 2001 titled “All Rise,” “All Night” is your new go-to mood-lifting track that’s begging you to unlock new core memories on the dancefloor with close friends or strangers soon to become ones. R3HAB and Sophie and the Giants last worked together when he remixed her song “Paradise” (Sophie‘s collaboration with Purple Disco Machine), and “All Night” is another euphoric dancefloor track to light up your night, following R3HAB‘s single “Gózalo” with Deorro on Sony Music and Sophie‘s release “Shut Up And Dance.”

“I’ve been a fan of Sophie‘s work since ‘Hypnotized‘ came out, and after remixing her record ‘Paradise‘ we joined forces in our new collaboration ‘All Night.’ Her 90s pop vocals were a perfect fit for my vision of this dance anthem, bridging an upbeat groove with an iconic melody. ‘All Night‘ is all about letting yourself go, chasing thrills, and celebrating life all day and night. We’re excited to finally share it with the world.” – R3HAB

“I’m super excited to announce my new collab with R3HAB! Ever since his remix of my single ‘Paradise,’ this collab felt totally right. We’ve created a massive anthem that combines our musical styles. ‘Take a vacation‘ captures everything in this song. It will make you forget about everyday life and take you to that perfect night you never want to end.” – Sophie and the Giants

R3HAB

Multi-platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Calvin Harris to anthems such as Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, ZAYN, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 11 billion streams to date, including more than 1.2B in 2023 alone. R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. R3HAB continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with artists around the globe, pushing the boundaries of dance music as he collaborates across genres and languages. He is Spotify’s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 350 most streamed artists, ranked #14 on the prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 80 Diamond, Platinum, and Gold certificates. R3HAB has embarked on multiple sold-out worldwide tours and was the first dance music artist to sell out 15 consecutive shows in China. On top of that, he performed at the world’s top festivals, such as EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB has earned his place as a household name in dance music.

Sophie and the Giants

With intoxicating melodies gliding serenely over primal disco pulses, Sophie and the Giants has been captivating her fans since her debut EP released in 2018, followed by multiple platinum and gold awards and major airplay successes. Resonating with the claustrophobia and confusion of 2020, though still looking ahead with hope, Sophie‘s and Purple Disco Machine‘s first collaborative track, “Hypnotized,” proved to be something of a secret weapon. With over 650M combined streams, diamond in France, multiple platinum awards in 7 countries and gold in Finland, “Hypnotized” was a huge sensation. Given how well their mix of personalities came together on “Hypnotized,” it seemed inevitable that Sophie would again work with Purple Disco Machine, and their second collaboration “In The Dark” did not disappoint. Dropping at the start of 2022, it proved another monster hit for the duo, as it was streamed over 200M times, hitting the #1 spot on the EU airplay charts, plus #1 in Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands, #2 in Poland, Austria and Switzerland and #3 in Italy. It was also the most-played song on German and Italian radio in 2022. Sophie finally went on her first proper European headline tour in autumn last year demonstrating her formidable live reputation to a wider audience – something Sophie‘s showpiece performance of Golden Nights during the semi-final of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest had signaled across the continent. Her latest release “Shut Up and Dance” reached #2 oin the German airplay charts, #12 in Italy, and many more. After her big festival tour through Europe, where she once again demonstrated her skills, you can only guess how much creative potential she still has to offer – so better be ready when she drops the next dance floor banger.

Soundtracked by their most expansive collection of artists to date, their ninth edition is looking to be something special, featuring artists such as FISHER, Ice Spice, Chase & Status, Marlon Hoffstadt, Tinashe, Royel Otis, Sammy Virji, Sugababes, Natasha Bedingfield, AJ Tracey, Denis Sulta & much more.

More than just a festival, Beyond The Valley invites you to experience a world of creativity and community. Last year’s event sold out, sign up for presale to secure your spot.

Supported by triple j, Beyond the Valley is brought to you by Untitled Group, the largest independent music promoter in Australia behind festivals such as Pitch Music & Arts, Wildlands, Ability Fest & more.

THIS YEAR’S LINEUP:

Following his biggest year of international touring yet with a swathe of shows across the US and Europe over the past year, Grammy-nominated Gold Coast dance sensation FISHER triumphantly returns to home soil for Beyond The Valley.

American drill queen with a pop twist, Ice Spice, is one of an exciting contingent of international artists playing BTV. After breaking out with her TikTok viral 2022 song ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’, Ice Spice has cemented her place in pop culture and followed up with a string of huge global tracks including collaborations with Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress and Taylor Swift, and dropped her debut album ‘Y2K!’ last month.

British Drum ‘n’ Bass duo Chase & Status have experienced a second coming in recent years taking advantage of the genre’s renaissance, dropping a string of huge singles including ‘Disconnect’ with Becky Hill, ‘Baddadan’, and more recently, the Stormzy-featuring ‘Backbone’ which earned Chase & Status their first ever UK #1.

Berlin DJ and producer Marlon Hoffstadt, aka DJ Daddy Trance, has been riding a wave of success in recent years. With a string of hit singles like ‘It’s That Time’ and ‘Call Me,’ Hoffstadt has made a name for himself on the global stage. Known for his sugary, rave-forward beats, Hoffstadt’s high-energy sets have captivated audiences worldwide.

After emerging with breakout single ‘Oysters In My Pocket’ in 2022, the supremely talented Sydney duo Royel Otis have been scaling new heights with multiple globally charting singles just two years later. Don’t miss your chance to see the band perform their viral versions of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ and Billboard-charting Cranberries cover ‘Linger’.

Acclaimed and prolific singer-songwriter Tinashe bolsters a top drawer international contingent, having recently secured her first solo Billboard Hot 100 single ‘Nasty’ – the lead track from her seventh studio album ‘Quantum Baby’ which dropped last week, and will bring her live show to Beyond The Valley.

Australia loves Sammy Virji, and the UK garage sensation Sammy Virji will return down under for Beyond The Valley off the back of his biggest Australian headline tour to date earlier this year.

Also joining the line-up are Sugababes who became one of the most successful British girl bands of the 21st century with six UK Number One singles, millions of global sales and multiple multi-platinum albums. Along the way, they told one of the most spectacular stories of the modern pop era, but it all started with one song, three voices and a mysterious white label 7”. Fast forward two decades, the original line up of Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy arrived back in full force becoming the talk of the summer festivals including having to shut down their field at Glastonbury due to demand.
