Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m in Guelph- I’m not sure yet how it compares to other towns but so far I find the music peeps in Guelph incredibly welcoming and warm to new artists and sounds.  I’ve met a lot of artists from the area who work super hard and make cool, unique stuff, and they’ve all had a massive impact on me this year.

How did you first start playing music?

I started with piano when I was a smol bean.  I got into electronic music when I met my friend from the band SolarSolar, and got sucked in by their pulsing, ghostly music and my friend’s soundtrack work.

You are a relatively new artist on the scene, what have you found most challenging and rewarding along the way?

The most challenging thing for me was getting used to the idea that I needed to actually go out and meet people and play my music in front of them.  Once I finally put together a set, I was actually excited to get out and do it live.  Now I’m far more into with it than I ever expected to be.

What have you been working on in 2018?
2018 was a lot of acquiring the music gear I needed, learning how to use it and just creating a bunch of stuff in isolation.  Other artists and music friends told me I needed to start playing out, so I kind of reluctantly put my live set together over the summer, and played my first show at the end of it.  I understand how important that is now, and I’ve met some really cool artists and bands, so I’m thankful I’ve had some supportive people around to push me with the live set thing.

What do you have planned for 2019?
2019 is the future so I’d like to go to space.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m not doing a ton of listening to other music atm as I’ve been busy finalizing the mixes for my album.  But I know Phosphorescent and Empress Of have new albums out that I’m going to pay attention to next.  I listen to Brian Eno to help with sleep sometimes.

What programs/equipment do you use?

Lately I use a mix of Maschine and Cubase to arrange and produce my music.  I recorded some of my vocals for the album with a bluebird condenser mic and then later upgraded (imo) and did some with an akg c414 condenser.  I use a lot of Native Instruments software – I LOVE their Kinetic Toys and Kinetic Metal instruments, and Replika XT is an awesome delay with lots of modes and effects.  I record my samples with a Zoom H4n.  It’s a really really fun tool and with a massive range- you could listen into your neighbours’ homes with it, hëhė.  I don’t do that.

How do you usually go about writing music?

There’s so many different ways, depending on the song.  For my song Armadilla, I took all the samples outside one night and then made a kit with them in Maschine on my laptop.  I made the initial synth loop and then played my sample kit over top of it and built the song up from those loops.  I arranged the instrumental track, and then spent some time writing the lead vocals, and filled out the sonic gaps with a minilogue synth.

Who or what influences your sound and songwriting?

¡Aliens!¶[] [] ~[] and Henlo.

What direction do you see electro going in the future?

I think sampling organic sounds is a really big thing that people are getting more into.  It’s interesting how instruments have branched out from naturally resonant bodies like flutes, lutes, pianos, harps etc., towards the more electric sounds from guitars and analog synths and then digital synths and computer software.  And now some of us are throwing sand and slapping flowers and rocks and making songs out of that.  It’s circled back to the way all this music stuff began except now one person can record the individual sounds on a portable mic and paste it around on their computers to create a boppin jam.  It’s not a brand new thing as of the 21th century but I think definitely becoming more common.

What do you like to do away from music?
I love birb memes and videos.. I love birbs.  I watch a lot of videos of birbs being dinks.  I also like playing video games and lately, a lot of phone games.  Brilliant ones like Machinarium and life-wasting ones like Flip Trickster.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Fruit by the Foot!  And tofu made by someone who gets it.  I like being on boats.

THE BEASTS Announce Tour Supports DALLAS CRANE, THE JOHNNYS & THE PAINKILLERS

by the partae December 18, 2018
written by the partae
Today, The Beasts announce the support acts for their upcoming ‘The Beasts Still Here’ national Australian tour this February / March 2019.

Joining them for both Melbourne shows in St Kilda (Friday 22nd February) and Northcote (Saturday 23rd) are ARIA nominated alternative rockers Dallas Crane.

Trailblazing cowpunks The Johnnys are back with the current line-up of Graham Hood (bass and vocals), Slim Doherty (guitar) and Billy Pommer Jr (drums) and will be joining their mates The Beasts in Byron Bay (Friday 1st March) Brisbane (Saturday 2nd), Canberra (Thursday 7th), Sydney (Friday 8th), Newcastle (Saturday 9th) and Adelaide (Sunday 17th).

And finally, WA’s The Painkillers’ will perform their unique blend of folk, blues, rock ’n’ roll and punk in Fremantle (Thursday 14th March) and Perth (Friday 15th and Saturday 16th).

LISTEN TO THE BEASTS NEW SINGLE ‘ON MY BACK’ HERE

After an extremely emotional final performance with the Beasts of Bourbon, Tex Perkins hit upon the idea of getting all of the band’s members, past and present into a recording studio with no particular agenda other than to do just that. It was more of a celebratory thing he had in mind than anything. Sadly, bassist Brian Hooper didn’t make it along as he passed away a week after the Beasts last show.

Assembled in Soundpark Studio a couple of weeks later were, Charlie Owen, Boris Sujdovic, Tony Pola, Spencer Jones, Kim Salmon and Tex Perkins. They were unprepared save for some some sketchy ideas, loose ends and a couple of covers. With limited time the band knocked together a collection of jams pretty much true to the crazy M.O. employed back when The Axeman’s Jazz got laid down in that fateful eight-hour session in 1983.

Deeply sad is that Spencer was only around long enough to make it onto one track. Absolutely wonderful is that he did make it onto the recording. And with such a funny and typically Jones style piece of observation as At The Hospital.

With respect, this isn’t the Beasts of Bourbon. It would need to have Jonesy on every track to be that! But loudly and proudly this is: The Beasts Still Here.

The Beasts album ‘Still Here’ is released Friday 15th February 2019 on Bang! Records (Rocket).

Electronic collective La Fine Equipe share new 90s inspired video for ‘What Eva’

by the partae December 18, 2018
written by the partae

“The throwback aesthetic is prominent throughout the video, paired with the bass-heavy, synth-driven boom-bap styled production of the track” – Earmilk

Rising French electronic collective and label owners, La Fine Equipe, are pleased to announce details of a brand new visual for ‘What Eva’ ft. Mr. J. Medeiros released through Nowadays Records this December.

The band detail the video: “We wanted it to look like a 90s VHS that was put on the VCR. Part of the charm was its fuzzy, imperfect look so apparent during that era. ‘What Eva’ embodies a strong DIY ethos and we the band, did most of the filming ourselves using a small handheld camcorder. Everything was filmed on location in the supermarket. There are no 3D models. The song and visual is also a homage to the strong visual elements often found in 90s music videos like Mc Solaar’s ‘New Western’ and French hiphop outfit IAM’s ‘Je danse le Mia’. There is a surreal sequence in the video where we are surrounded by a kaleidoscopic display of supermarket products. To summarize, we had a complete blast filming this”.

La Fine Equipe are strongly influenced by hip-hop royalty like J Dilla, Mos Def and Madlib. The four French beatmakers, Oogo, Chomsky, Mr, Gib and Blanka from (Marseille and Paris collectively continue their journey with a new album due in March 2019. The group’s debut album, ‘La Boulangerie’, attained cult status and propelled the band into the mainstream consciousness. This led to the release of three more critally acclaimed albums ‘Fantastic Planet’ (2010), ‘La Boulangerie 2’ (2011) and ‘La Boulangerie 3’ (2014) and the creation of celebrated electronic label Nowadays Records that recently celebrated their 5 year anniversary with a special 23 track compilation ‘Nowadays V’ featuring label signings like Fakear, Clement Bazin, Robert Robert and more.
La Fine Equipe have also taken their hi-octane live shows across Europe including festivals like Les Vieilles Charrues, Dour, Les Francofolies, the Printemps de Bourges and the Couleur Café festival and a mini tour of Asia. The band also won the Deezer Adami Award and glowing reviews in tastemaker press like Arte, MixMag and Boiler Room, who invited them to be part of their legendary Boiler Room Sessions in Paris and London.

FRACTURES DEBUTS COVER OF “EASTSIDE”

by the partae December 18, 2018
written by the partae
A BEAUTIFUL TAKE ON HIT TRACK FROM BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID
SINGLE OUT NOW VIA FADER LABEL / CAROLINE AUSTRALIA
Today, Fractures releases a cover of Benny Blanco, Halsey, and Khalid’s hit summer track “Eastside”, via the FADER Label / Caroline Australia.

Fractures’ beautiful cover of “Eastside” brings added musical production including synths and layered guitar melodies that build and break at the chorus. The introduction of new melodies and Mark Zito’s captivating vocals provide added emotion to the track.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95CORsx6ta0
Mark Zito of Fractures originally decided to cover “Eastside” because of his appreciation for Khalid. He says, “I’m not a person who typically seeks out new music, or any music for that matter. I tend to let it come to me and that can take months but by whatever means I found myself getting lost in Khalid’s work…to redesign someone else’s work, work with which you already have a great appreciation, is always a risky prospect so I can only hope I did it justice but I know I’m happy with it and thankful the song exists.”

Fractures  made his debut on FADER Label this fall with “Sculptures”, which Billboard called “haunting, ethereal.” Soon after, he released an acoustic performance of “Sculptures” capturing the emotional sentiments in the song about doubt and affirmation. Watch it here. Last month, Fractures followed up with “Dawn”, a track with layered, intricate instrumentation about the importance of straying from the path and taking risks. “Dawn” was this week added to spot rotation on triple j.

Stay tuned for announcements, and visit fracturesmusic.com.au for more information.

Jurek Riegler

written by the partae

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I`m based in Berlin. Mhm, what can I say.. I mean its huge…

How did you first start playing music?

When I was six years old, I wanted to be a drummer. So I grabbed cooking spoons and all cooking pots and let off steam. I always wanted to have a real drum set, but that wasn’t financially feasible for my mother. But she had noticed that I had a very good sense of tact and so she sent me to drum lessons. The teacher at the time was a strange guy. Somehow a mixture of conservative rocker and bourgeois jazzer – I found him rather uncool and when he started to teach me notes in the second lesson, the fun was already over. I just wanted to play the beats that came to mind…  I had a very strong will of my own quite early on.

What programs/instruments do you use live and to record?

Until about 2 years ago I worked purely with hardware and it was more a jam than a real producing. My setup at that time consisted of a Micro Korg XL, two Kaoss Pads, a Mackie 16 channel mixer and a SM 58. At that time I used to beatbox regularly and produced all percussive sounds with my mouth. Today it looks quite different. The central point is the computer on which Logic runs. I mainly work with plug-ins. But I still have my Kaoss pads and the Micro Korg – and recently I got the Subsequent 37 from Moog.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Right now I hear a lot of Radiohead and Djrum probably because of the cold season.

Who or what influences your sound and songwriting?

When I was a child, my mom’s record cabinet was the most important thing to me. Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Keith Jarret, Moby, Air, Kruder and Dorfmeister and many other pioneers were represented in it. When I was 12-13 years old and was looking for new artists myself, I found mostly American rap on my shelf. Artists like Dilated Peoples, Afu- Ra, Jedi Mind Tricks, M.O.P, Cypress Hill, Jurassic 5, The Roots and what they are all called. German rap was actually only present later. But things like Kreuzfeld Jakob, Stieber Twins, Absolute Beginner, Team Eimsbush etc. are an integral part of my youth.

How do you usually go about writing music?

I don’t really have a plan when I start making music. Most of the time I start jamming and watch what happens. Recently I try to play the melody or groove I have in my head and it works surprisingly well. I don’t lose the focus so much and can hold on to the first idea which is often really the best one. It’s also kind of satisfying to let the thoughts sound.

Please tell us about how you came to work with ursl:

In fact, I had finished my EP for a while. But I didn’t know exactly which label would fit. I had known URSL for a while, but strangely enough it wasn’t on my screen when it came to my own music – even though I had seen many of those released on the label at the Garbicz or at the Fusion festival and had celebrated most of all. Anyway, a buddy of mine made me aware of URSL again. And promptly it worked out. I think they just happened to have their mails open when I sent this 😉 Fortunately a positive answer came very quickly.

What is important to you when making music?

The most important thing for me is always to express a clear feeling, that can be a certain sound or a melody. Functionality in the physical sense is only second. I always find it disappointing how often Djs are tempted to play the proven functional track at an early stage. For many, the arms sticking out into the air are simply too tempting. The environment plays another important role for me. I recently put my workplace by the window. Now I can look into the trees during production, which I find very inspiring.

What have you been working on in 2018 and what do you have planned for 2019?

At the moment I’m working on many different tracks in parallel. Let’s see what will come out of it – I think it will be the next EP. Next year I definitely want to venture into the DJ booth again.  I recently played again for the first time in a long time. And it gives me great pleasure to send people on their journey.

Please tell us about your interest of food and cooking:

At the age of eleven, my Italian stepfather, who is an excellent chef, was a member of our family. When he joined our family, I was just happy to get some delicious food on the table and didn’t really want to learn how to make the perfect risotto.  But since he also makes music himself, he was able to show parallels between music and cooking in an entertaining way. At the beginning, of course, my typical anti teacher attitude came to light. -But little by little I understood what he meant by that that every ingredient and every spice in its quantity, timing, duration is crucial for a good arrangement and mix.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I’m always very curious about food or probably more aptly put, I’m pretty greedy. I could spend hours in market halls and go from stand to stand. Berlin already offers a great variety. However, I regularly ask myself how the gastronomy can survive here. The prices were cut close, the leases are getting higher and the competition is huge! I think that’s a pity because I regularly notice that one good restaurant after another is closing. It bothers me totally. There should finally be a rethink regarding the quality and appreciation of food. We should not perceive ourselves as running garbage cans ;)!

10 Years of Kolombo Playlist, Xmas Mix, SA Tour 2019

by the partae December 18, 2018
written by the partae

We are very close to celebrate a new Xmas season with our loved ones, to say ‘sayonara’ to 2018, start with illusion the new 2019… Yes, all that is just around the corner. The Belgian Olivier Grégoire aka Kolombo and before all this magic happens, decided to prepare us an Xmas Mix (free download), also dedicate a few words talking about 2018 and expectations for 2019, and finally offer a Playlist (Spotify) summarizing 10 years as an artist.

“2018 was a really special! This year I tried to change a bit my sound, I felt the necessity of this and now I’m finding myself again without losing my identity. I had the opportunity to play in many places in the world, I had some debut releases, my house is finally finished and my wife is touring with me, so it couldn’t end better.

2019 I expect to release a bit more on other labels, perform in places where I’ve never been before, to keep working hard to make all this real. But even, if the new year is just like 2018, I wouldn’t complain!”. (Kolombo)

Sergio Bennett & Coopdown sign ‘Dirty Money’ on YET Records

by the partae December 18, 2018
written by the partae
NOW ON SALE

The transtalantic label YET Records return with a new single from Sergio Bennett & Coopdown that comes backed with a big remix from Piem.

The Spanish duo of Sergio Bennett & Coopdowm are no strangers to the upper echelons of the Beatport charts thanks to many collaborative tracks on the likes of My Little Dog, Piston and Heavenly Bodies. They are brothers with a broad range of styles from indie dance to nu disco to all types of tech, and here go for a hard hitting house jam.

Their standout single ‘Dirty Money‘ is all about big, bulky drums that have an infectious sense of roll and swing. They will get the floor’s attention and keep it with a raw percussion and whirring synths, muffled vocals and a playful sense of party that keeps on delivering.

Catalan born Piem is at the heart of the current tech house landscape with his tunes on Knee Deep In Sound, VIVa Limited and Toolroom. His remix is a stripped back, whacked out number with metal drums and rolling snares all building tension throughout. It’s a tense, peak time track that explodes into life and will animate any club.

These are two nonsense house anthems destined for big things.

Florian Picasso keeps the anthems coming with new track Hikari for Protocol Recordings

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

In 2015, Protocol Recordings gave young newcomer Florian Picasso his first major break, releasing his superb ‘Origami’ on an unsuspecting world. Later re-released with a vocal as ‘Want It Back (Origami)’, the anthemic track picked up millions of plays and became his most popular solo single. Since ‘Origami‘ the bond between Protocol and Picasso grew even more, with the release of ‘Only for your Love’ a collab track with Nicky Romero, ‘Hanabi’ with Raiden, and several performances at Protocol shows.

Once again Picasso chooses a Japanese name for his track, expressing his love for the Japanese culture and his Asian roots.  ‘Hikari’ means ‘light’ in Japanese, and this track is certainly befitting of that title with its bright, life-giving sound.

Warm on-beat synth chords immediately introduce us to the uplifting progression at the heart of this track. A delectable plucked riff dances its way on to of this backbone, with a gorgeous vocal synth bolstering its beautiful melody. A big snare build thrusts us to the drop where a joyous, stuttered take on this lead melody plays out through big trance chords and thick, buzzing bass. The main break twists and turns these superbly scintillating melodies further, launching us into one final fist-pumping, pyrotechnic-laden drop. Slick, brilliantly honed production galvanizes this excellent track, marking another hit for Florian.

‘Hikari‘ is Picasso’s third track in a month after ‘Glitch‘ and ‘The Answer‘ both announced his comeback in style. Making his mark once again with this hot new cut, he has shown that he is back for good and that 2019 is going to be a huge year for him.

New UK Tour of DUSKY PRESENTS: 4 lineups in 4 cities with Robert Hood, Lone, DJ Randall (acid house set) and more

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

The inimitable Dusky announce the return of their DUSKY PRESENTS event series with four dates across Bristol, Sheffield, London and Manchester. The duo will be joined by an eclectic selection of guests such as techno legend Robert Hood, R&S’s Lone, Dekmantel favourite Matrixxman, the resurgent Paul Woolford, and rising stars Sally C, Brame & Hamo, and KETTAMA.

Fresh from a smash US tour and the release of their much-loved ‘Aset Forever’ EP (supported by Rampa, Red Axes, Adam Beyer among others), Dusky are getting back to their roots and their prominence within the UK underground scene by focussing on their event series, DUSKY PRESENTS. Each event and lineup is meticulously curated to ensure a night of authenticity which embodies everything they’re about as artists, producers and label A&Rs. They’ve mingled their heroes and long-time friends with 17 Steps debutants, including Brame & Hamo and Kettama who join the label with their Aset Forever remix package.

“The Dusky Presents series is a chance for us to showcase artists we have always admired, or have caught our eye recently. It’s always an honour to curate – and programme – line-ups with our favourite artists, and we’re excited by the variety of names joining us.” Dusky

The EP: Heralding the tour, the ‘Aset Forever EP – The Remixes’ with Brame & Hamo and Kettama drops 14th December.
Irish born, Berlin-based duo Brame & Hamo rework ‘Amongst The Gods’, combining distorted kicks and industrial percussion with euphoric samples from the original, to create an unequivocally rave-ready flip. Fellow Irishman and rising star KETTAMA transforms ‘Staunch’ from a darkly brooding cut into a thumping hard house epic spiked with zapping synths and hefty percussion.

The Tour: Dusky’s well crafted and diverse DJ sets, along with their live show and 17 Steps imprint, have earned them a place at the forefront of electronic music, but nothing matches their particular mix of talents more perfectly than a Dusky DJ set on home turf – this time supported by some of the most respected and cutting-edge names in electronic music.

REZZ joins forces with Blanke to deliver collaborative new single, ‘Mixed Signals’

New single follows the release of REZZ’s acclaimed second album ‘Certain Kind of Magic’

REZZ x Blanke –
‘ Mixed Signals’

Out Now

Buy/Stream ‘Mixed Signals’ Here

JUNO award-winning Canadian producer REZZ has unveiled her sensational new single, ‘Mixed Signals’, a sizzling collaborative record made with rising Australian producer, Blanke.

A throbbing industrial production which showcases REZZ’s signature style – a potent mix of bass heavy tones and sickly sci-fi sounds – ‘Mixed Signals’ is an unsettling thumper, blessed with Blanke’s dynamic hooks and pulsating chord patterns.

With Blanke’s music performed at the likes of Ultra Miami, EDC Las Vegas, Shambhala, Coachella and Lost Lands in 2018, the producer has also headlined two tours of his native Australia ahead of his North American Debut in February 2018, has received airtime from the likes of BBC Radio 1 and Sirius XM, en route to huge productions like his remix of PNAU‘s ‘Changes’ – which has clocked over 5 million streams on Spotify to date. His productions and remixes have been supported by the likes of Marshmello, Jauz, Illenium and Steve Aoki to name a few.

Arguably her busiest year so far, 2018 marked the release of REZZ’s highly-anticipated second album, Certain Kind of Magic. The production arrived on the back of a hectic summer run of shows, which included highly praised performances at Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza, Coachella and Electric Zoo to name a few, with the Canadian recently playing at Red Rocks for her sold-out ‘REZZ Rocks’ show, delivering her spooktacular Halloween mix, ‘Nightmare on REZZ Street’ and her recent remix of Porter Robinson’s ‘Divinity’.

‘Mixed Signals’ represents a slick amalgamation of both artist’s tantalizing production styles. The single rounds off a spectacular year for the Canadian who recently completed her Certain Kind of Magic tour to critical acclaim and will be ringing in 2019 with an eagerly anticipated show in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve.

Martin Garrix & Julian Jordan combine for new STMPD RCRDS bomb Glitch

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

Martin Garrix and Julian Jordan have been friends for a good while now and began making tracks together before the world knew either of their names. After the outstanding previous collabs BFAM and Welcome comes another fresh track in the shape of Glitch — a project they started working on six years ago and only recently decided to finish.

LISTEN HERE
Centred around an expansive melody, Glitch is a powerful track with big drops, razor-sharp electro bass and colourful synth sounds. An array of different sounds are used to create minute fills. It’s a feel-good anthem befitting of both of their talents, and with all their experience and knowledge, the promise of this early demo has now been fully realised.
“When we are in the studio together, we are just having fun”  explains Jordanof their working partnership. “It’s just like friends hanging out and watching videos.“
Julian recently signed to STMPD RCRDS, with the massive Tell Me The Truth as his latest release on the label. With an amazing ADE under his belt where he hosted his own night and played a rocking set at the STMPD label night, he is gearing up for 2019 as Bootshaus New Years Eve headliner and one of his first gigs taking place at the amazing Dreambeach Chile in January.
Martin’s incredibly prolific schedule continues in the final weeks of the year, with two remix packages of his MIKE YUNG collaboration Dreamer lined up, he’s also touring in China and Asia this month.

Following a hugely successful 2018 edition, one of the most adventurous, colourful and immersive festivals Boomtown has announced the exciting introduction of AREA 404; an impressive Techno haven featuring some of electronic music’s most influential figures.

The four-day 60,000 capacity festival set in the Matterley bowl in Hampshire, UK on the second weekend of August, will construct a ground breaking and theatrical led new stage area; the distinctively Industrial, post-apocalyptic and expansive AREA 404 will be dedicated to the raw sounds within the electronic music spectrum.

Drawing deep inspiration from Boomtown’s innovative delivery and creative commitment, the proudly independent festival now in its 11th year, will also invite Drumcode and Bugged Out to host the stage for Friday and Sunday, respectively, with confirmed headliners across the Friday, Saturday and Sunday including Carl Cox, Four Tet and Amelie Lens.

Celebrating 25 years of Bugged Out, Australian Lo-Fi House luminary Mall Grab will join esteemed selectors Ben UFO, Joy Orbison, Phantasy Boss Erol Alkan and Boyz Noize as they also welcome Four Tet’s electronic illumination of sound to AREA 404’s intense landscape.

Saturday’s headliner is non-other than the ultimate Techno legend and one of the founding fathers of the Techno-House genre; Carl Cox.

The renowned DJ and figure head makes his sensational Boomtown debut with Eats Everything, Dirtybird leader Claude Vonstroke while the pioneering Skream is set to share the booth with fast rising and inspiring SAMA’.

Swedish techno platform Drumcode, will bring its uncompromising sound to Sunday with sets from Dense & Pika, Enrico Sangiuliano and a special b2b session from La Fleur and B.Traits before one of biggest names in Techno headlines proceedings. The unstoppable, Antwerp-born Amelie Lens’ ascension to festival main stages worldwide has been meteoric and cements AREA 404’s residence amongst the Techno elite.

AREA 404 is the latest progressive to arise from the deeply original and idiosyncratic vision of Boomtown’s creators, and added to 14 distinctly themed areas, hosting 27 main stages and 80 smaller street venues. The latest edition to the Fair is poised to instil excitement and eagerness within the electronic music community.

The full Nucleus lineup and trailer can be found on the Boomtown website

MMPH drops new remix EP on Tri Angle Records ft Roly Porter, object blue, Giant Claw & Forest Drive West

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae
“This song could easily fall apart with its frenetic pace, but it reveals itself more and more, and all those head-spinning sonics seem downright gorgeous with every passing listen.” – Pitchfork (on Woodlawn)
“Magnificently unstable energy pumps through the most straightforwardly banging moment yet from the David Byrne collaborator.” – The Guardian
“Han’s new EP for Tri Angle, both combine intricate orchestral instrumentation with darkly jagged electronics for a sound that punches you in the stomach as it worms its way into your brain.” – FACT

Today Sae Heum Han, better known by his stage name mmph, has dropped a new remix EP featuring new versions of each track from his recent release, ‘Serenade’ (out now on Tri Angle).

Following mmph’s production work on the recently released Perfume Genius’ latest single – a cover of Bobby Darin’s “Not For Me”, ‘Serenade Remixed’ sees the 24 year-old’s own tracks reimagined by acclaimed electronic composer Roly Porter, hyperactive cut-and-paste pop wizard Giant Claw, hotly tipped jungle techno artist Forest Drive West, and one of the most exciting producers to emerge out of London in the past year, object blue.

Above Sae Heum Han’s desk hangs a blue and white crochet crucifix given to him by his grandmother. This object doubles as the artwork for ‘Serenade’. Separate from any religious connotations, the crucifix represents love, loss and hope – themes mmph explores on the EP.

Han, who also produced David Byrne’s grammy nominated album ‘American Utopia’ and serpentwithfeet‘s ‘Soil’which has been celebrated in many end of year lists, attended Berklee College of Music to study cello before shifting his concentration towards Electronic Production & Sound Design, a pivot that resulted in the birth of his project, mmph. mmph’s compositions exist at the intersection of analog classical music arrangement and forward thinking electronic sound production.

‘Serenade’ evokes a newfound expressive romanticism utilizing a broader palate of orchestral and electronic sounds. Melodically focused, orchestrally informed and rhythmically driven, each of ‘Serenade’s songs utilize a different classical trope to create Wagnerian suites in miniature. “Minuet” is a stately dance in triple time (performance), “Tragedy” is a play (death), “Elegy” is a mourning poem (death), and “Serenade” is a courtship song often played in the open air (love). Fusing synths choirs, arpeggiated (sometimes plucked) strings & steel string guitars, mmph creates a sense of extraordinary melodrama that feels more at home against the romantic backdrop of a Turner seaside cliff than a college student’s basement. Against these romantic landscapes, the baroque-feeling mini-operas of mmph’s ‘Serenade’ comes to life.

‘Serenade Remixed’ track list:
1. Serenade (Giant Claw Remix)
2. Minuet (Forest Drive West Remix)
3. Tragedy (Roly Porter Remix)
4. Woodlawn (biochemical object blue remix)

Bristol’s forward-thinking, genre-twisting duo ICARUS are taking their music to the next level as they prepare to take their LIVE show on Tour. Recently touring with Mixmag cover stars, RÜFÜS DU SOL, the pair played at a sold-out show at London’s, Printworks. Embarking on their own UK tour in April next year, they’re set to play five dates across Manchester, London, Glasgow, Bristol and Dublin.

Uniquely versatile, ICARUS are equally adept at crafting tracks across the board, from deep, underground club tracks to crossover airplay hits, along with more experimental fare. The pair continue to push boundaries with their music production, bringing their work to life with live elements; adding a new dimension to their shows.

Recently releasing tracks ‘Echoes’ and ‘Man Of The Land’ on the legendary FFRR, both have seen substantial radio support from Radio 1 by industry tastemakers such as Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Phil Taggart. ‘Echoes’ saw particular success reaching #3 on the BBC Radio 1 Dance Chart, with a further addition to Apple Music’s A-List Dance playlist.

Having taken their live show on tour earlier this year, ICARUS sold-out Londons, Electrowerkz, along with attracting the masses at Leeds Festival, Boardmasters, South West 4 and Café Mambo in Ibiza. Five consecutive days, kicking off at Manchester’s, The Deaf Institute will see the duo take the stage at XOYO in London and Glaswegian institution, SWG3. Touching down in their hometown, they play the award-winning Thekla, before rounding off the tour in Dublin at Button Factory.
