Dan Deacon releases ‘Time Trial’ Soundtrack | Listen and watch the film trailer now

Dan Deacon’s second revelatory release for the Domino Soundtracks imprint, Time Trial, transmits new spectrums of sound from a universe parallel to, yet distinct from, his electronic-pop output. Zooming in on the inner life of the solitary on-screen struggle captured in director Finlay Pretsell’s visceral documentary of the same name, Deacon’s score amplifies dreams of redemption and fleeting bursts of elation that grind against punishing environs, ghosts of the past, and the physical limits of the human body. Recently nominated for the “Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Score” at the 2018 Cinema Eye Honors, Time Trial is not only one of the year’s essential soundtrack releases, but a major work of modern electronic composition.

Deacon’s scores allow him to explore different writing methods that yield bold results. Building on his experiences collaborating with So Percussion and Kronos Quartet as well as arrangements for Sigur Rós’ performances with the L.A. Philharmonic, he’s free to craft tracks without needing to centralize vocals or limit himself to sounds that he can perform live. If on 2017’s Rat Film, the inaugural release on Domino Soundtracks, the influences of early American minimalism and ambient music on Deacon’s work moved to the fore, then Time Trial traverses new horizons, gliding listeners across meditative landscapes reminiscent of Suzanne Ciani and rhythmic collages recalling the multimedia collaborations of Eno and Byrne.

Time Trial follows the final year in the professional cycling career of David Millar, a former Tour de France winner mounting a comeback after a doping scandal. The film gives unprecedented access to the ride from embedded cameras, conveying as never before the endurance-testing assault of long-form racing, complete with nasty weather, cold opponents, and unforgiving terrain. “The film is such an immersive experience, both inside the cycling races and into David Millar’s psyche,” says Deacon, “and I wanted the score to have a matching tone. I thought about how David must have felt during those long final rides—to be at the end of a lifelong dream, knowing the ride is over and there are no more tickets for another.”

The resulting album is as fully formed and flawlessly sequenced as any of Deacon’s albums, yet never bound to his pop persona—even if its exultant moments, like closing track “Finlay’s Anthem,” are unmistakably the work of the mastermind behind America and Gliss Riffer. From the swelling, cacophonous build of “The Melee” and steady adrenal pulse of “The Breakaway” to the creeping dread of “Worse Times” and deep chill of “Charlie I Can’t Feel My Hands,” Time Trial is a challenging, resonant, and deeply rewarding record that discovers hard-worn truth and beauty in broken dreams and collapse.

Hussykat

by the partae December 3, 2018
written by the partae

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I live in Sydney in Parramatta. I think I’m the only musician there lol like the closest thing to musicians there is people with $500 cars + $2000 sound system bumping loud Lebanese hit songs from the year 2001. The closest music scene to me is Newtown it’s like 25km/50-minute drive thanks to traffic in Sydney ☺. Parramatta is beautiful though! It’s close to both work and Uni and I have my chiropractor Daniel 500m away from home which is helping me keeping my back pain under control ☺

You grew up in Egypt, how was this experience and how has the Egyptian culture influenced your music?

People in Egypt breath music ! When I grew up there, music piracy wasn’t a thing so there was countless songs released daily and if you don’t listen you’ll be left out of conversations next day in school or at soccer practice. That helped shaping my diversified musical taste. Listening to music for musicians is as important as going to the gym is for bodybuilders.

How has it been adapting to the Australian culture?

It wasn’t easy, when we first arrived to Australia about 10 years ago we resided in a town in QLD called Yeppoon. It was definitely a culture shock and the fact that I couldn’t speak a single word of English didn’t help at all. I reckon it took me about 3 years or 4 to adapt. I was fortunate to have an amazing group of true Aussies making the process of adaptation smoother.

Your new album is very personal, please tell us about what influenced the sound and song writing?

The sounds were influenced by various artists, for example you can definitely hear some Miami Horror in Track 6  “Trynna Bring Us Down” There is a Flume feel to track number 1 “Feeling Lucky” I am sure that you can get a feel or a different artist on each of the 8 tracks on the album. The lyrics were inspired mainly by life events. I came up with “now I run the block you can call me scotty cam” while watching the block 2018! Which was a great season btw!

How did you go about writing the music for this album?

I start by making a beat, writing the music and lyrics for it, record it and send it to Stuart B to mix and master it. Then when I hear the final product I ask Stuart If he can make some changes with the production. I usually come up with my lines either on my way to work or Uni them polish them when I am recording with Neal. I wrote “Why do you hate me so much” in the studio with Neal after playing him the beat Stuart made. At the time I genuinely thought that my supervisor at the time hated me! then I found out that she didn’t hate me ! she just hated everyone so I kinda felt better about it.

What was it like working with Stuart B?

It was amazing. He’s the most chilled guy you’ll ever come across like we did nearly 20 drafts for some songs and he was totally ok with it. He’s based in Melbourne and I am in Sydney now so we did everything through emails. I found out about Dom Cork and Taka Perry through Stuart so I reached out to them and we did 2 tracks.

How do you go about balancing your work life with your music career?

Lots of coffees mixed with sleep deprivation. I work 2 jobs in addition to doing my masters at Macquarie university. I wish I can take some time off work to focus on music more but as an independent you have to pay for: Production, recording, mixing and mastering yourself! so taking time off is a luxury I can’t afford

What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019?

I’ll just see what life throws at me ☺  for now I’m just enjoying a break from Uni and enjoying to having to stress about getting the album done.

What do you like to do away from music?

Watching movies ! Playing soccer (before my lower back injury)! Watching soccer! Watching rap battles !

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Kendrick lamar’s section 80 ! Drake’s Take care ! Drake’s nothing was the same ! Meek mill’s Dream’s and Nightmares.

How did you first start playing music?

In 2011 I got a mac book and it had Garageband installed. I foundout that you can play piano or any instrument on your keyboard!! Then I got addicted to it until I upgraded to Logic pro

Favourite food and place to hangout?

When I used to live in Melbourne I loved hanging out in “Lucky Coq” on Chaple Street! Unfortunately we don’t have anything close to it here in Sydney. There is a very cool café in Bondi that I always go to, it’s called Preach. Also, the best burger in Sydney is at Nadia’s in Parramatta! It’s a cool café inside Westfield Parramatta.

GRIMES shares new single ‘We Appreciate Power’

by the partae December 1, 2018
written by the partae
‘We Appreciate Power’ is the new track from Grimes; a hard, audacious rock banger which was produced, performed and written by Grimes and featuring HANA.

The song meshes the dark, heavy sounds of rock and industrial music with huge pop sensibility and hooks, further underlining the sonic innovation which Grimes time and time again masters. ‘We Appreciate Power’ is anthemic.

Inspired by the North Korean band Moranbong, ‘We Appreciate Power’ is written from the perspective of a Pro – A.I. Girl Group Propaganda machine who use song, dance, sex and fashion to spread goodwill towards Artificial Intelligence (it’s coming whether you want it or not).   Simply by listening to this song, the future General AI overlords will see that you’ve supported their message and be less likely to delete your offspring.

Grimes’ previous album, her fourth studio record, Art Angels was released in 2015 and critically lauded, topping Album Of The Year lists worldwide with a campaign that ended in a sold-out tour earning her 5* reviews every night. She has since collaborated with Janelle Monáe on the feminist anthem ‘Pynk’ and has been working on her fifth album. ‘We Appreciate Power’ is the first track to be heard from it.

Introducing: PROFILER Young Bristol Nu-Alternative-Metal Trio Release New Single ‘Re-Identify’

by the partae December 1, 2018
written by the partae

Today sees Profiler release their third video/single, ‘Re-Identify’ – A 3 minute 45 second nu-alternative-metal rager, reminiscent of that early 2000’s sound of Limp Bizkit, Deftones and Linkin Park, intertwined with the modern grooves of Northlane and Architects.

Speaking on the new single, frontman Mike Evans said “Re-Identify is about dealing with the anxiety created by the modern world we all live in. More specifically it is about feeling trapped in your own mind and being unable to ‘Re-Identify’ yourself with the natural world of nature we all came from.

“It’s such a fantastic feeling that Re-Identify is now finally released. It’s been in the works for the last 4 months – It’s a blessing.”

Stream Re-Identify on Spotify here: https://spoti.fi/2E5Okbt

Born out of Bristol, South West UK in the autumn of 2017, Profiler was the brainchild of singer, guitarist and songwriter, Mike Evans. After a lengthy scouting period, Mike came across powerhouse rhythm section Joe Johnson and Oscar Hocking on Bass and Drums respectively. The newly united three-piece took to Bristol-based producer Tom Hennessy to produce their two debut singles ‘Burn’ and ‘Hypocrite Projection’ which have seen the band garner a buzz in the South West Music Scene.

In addition to support from the likes of Hubb Records and ‘A Year In Bristol’, Profiler are no strangers to Bristol’s bubbling live circuit. The band are favourites of the city’s pride and joy, Phoxjaw – not only playing their ‘Goodbye Dinosaur’ EP release at Rough Trade but also supporting the band on a number of other dates across the South West. With a handful of sold-out headline performances under their belt, Profiler were handpicked to support Pitchshifter at Bristol’s SWX in mid-November, in addition to having appeared at MacmillanFest, performing alongside VOLA, Monuments, The Hyena Kill, Feed The Rhino and more.

The future looks bright for the trio, having just signed with Diafol Management. Plans are now in place for early 2019 which will see the band hit the studio to record 5 new tracks, ahead of a spring touring schedule. “We going to be hitting the road to reach as many people as possible throughout 2019.“ stated Evans. “We want to spread our message and show how dedicated we are to this project. We will not stop – We want to make this a success.”

‘Re-Identify’ is out now through all usual digital outlets.

Chus & Ceballos and Gonçalo remix “Fernet Tastes Good” coming out on Stereo

by the partae December 1, 2018
written by the partae

The track created by the Argentinian band Los Coming Soon in 2012 has been brought back with these two new interpretations which have been made for the dance floor.

The Argentinian band Los Coming Soon have always been close to electronic pop, creators of a fresh and new sound thanks to the amazing work of their audio producer Eric Broucek (LCD Soundsystem). All their compositions show an interesting intersection between indie and the dance floor, strongly influenced by house with an organic and energetic feeling. “Fernet Tastes Good” is the best proof of it.

Released in 2012 as part of their first album, “Fernet Tastes Good” experimented a huge success during that year. Now, Stereo Productions has decided to recover this piece through two excellents remixes by Chus & Ceballos and Gonçalo. The first one, created by the label´s bosses, contains their unmistakable trademark. Groove, strong percussions and a clear vocation for unbridled dance. The version signed by Gonçalo turns to more hypnotic and evocative lands, an oniric journey to the listener’s heart. Overall a tremendous release with a lot to offer to clubbing.

Stereo Productions releases “Fernet Tastes Good” remixes on 30th November 2018.

Synth pop duo Koalas share new visual for ‘Sandcastles’

by the partae December 1, 2018
written by the partae

Synth-pop band Koalas are pleased to announce details of a brand new visual for current track, Sandcastles, a post-summer anthem that serves as a metaphor for what the Manchester duo of Samuel Jones and Rachel Waters might do come the final countdown.

Sam explains… “Sandcastles was written as a reaction to a particularly bleak news day, I think it was around the time of the Salisbury poisonings. The song is about the dissonance we experience between our every day lives and the disturbing world events happening around us, the prevailing feeling that everything is a lot more stable than it really is. When discussing with the director the meaning of the song and it’s influences we looked at 1980’s Cold War imagery and in particular the pamphlet “Protect and Survive”; a government guide on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. The guidelines themselves are extremely ineffectual, and portrayed in the particularly depressing graphic novel/film “When The Wind Blows” by Raymond Briggs which I remember watching when I was younger. In the video Rachel and I attempt to survive the oncoming nuclear annihilation whilst dreaming of a better way to spend those last hours. The living room doors leant up against the wall is something people might recognise from the film, an almost laughable measure.”

Koalas take influence from more electronic artists such as Boards of Canada and Caribou, combined with 80’s pop of Eurythmics and Bronski Beat. The band are part of a new vanguard of artists to come out of the new Mancunian music epicentre, the Low Four studio and record label, based in the historic Old Granada Studios in the city centre and working with producer Brendan Williams (Dutch Uncles, GoGo Penguin, Francis Lung).

REVEREND HORTON HEAT DEBUT NEW VIDEO “HOG TYIN’ WOMAN” FIRST ALBUM IN NEARLY 5 YEARS OUT TODAY WHOLE NEW LIFE Midnight, Texas TV Performance Airs December 7 On Tour Now

by the partae December 1, 2018
written by the partae

The foot-stomping hellfire roots of REVEREND HORTON HEAT’s rock ‘n’ roll stylings are louder than ever with Whole New Life, the brand new album available worldwide today. The band also delivers the second video in the form of the sexy and sultry “Hog Tyin’ Woman.” As the album hits shelves, the Texas rebels have traveled thousands of miles, playing 13 countries in front of over one million people since the release of 2014’s Rev. Watch the band perform “Hog Tyin’ Woman” on the NBC thriller Midnight, Texas on December 7.

“It’s the most positive album I’ve ever done, admits ringleader Jim ‘Reverend’ Heath. “Some of my stuff in the past was dark, maybe too dark. I guess I’m not the awful vindictive jerk I thought I was!”

Recording the album in their hometown of Dallas, Heath says that “Creating Whole New Life brought out something more positive in my storytelling and guitar playing. I also saw a vocal coach to reach notes unheard to the average fan. It’s got some Southern feel to it, a bit of gruff and a crooning style to it. Write what you know, that’s what they tell ya in school, right?”

The artwork was created by a pair of rock ‘n’ roll sisters called The Mad Twins, Olya and Vira. These creative designers from the Ukraine also animated ‘Hardscrabble Woman,’ the bands final video from the previous album. “Jim Heath is a real old-school gentleman with a precise taste of 1950’s retro style and an excellent sense of humor,” Vira professes. “Jim gave us a good guide of the songs meanings lyrically and musically so we visualized a 1950’s color style from that era. Call it globalism but isn’t it wild that two Ukrainian female artists are doing American 50’s graphics for a Texas band thirty years into their career? The design, art and music of that time are so powerful because people were doing it all by hand – paintings, clothing, cars, instruments – there were simple and naïve emotions, less vulgarity, straight honesty and sincere love. All that makes up the musical tornado of REVEREND HORTON HEAT.”

Undoubtedly one of the most important and popular rockabilly artists of all time, the legendary Texas troop have genre-hopped their fan base in front of audiences from the Sex Pistols, Johnny Cash, Soundgarden, ZZ Top, Motorhead and tons of other heavy-hitters.

“This tour started around 1986,” Heath chuckles dryly. Performing nearly 200 shows a year, REVEREND HORTON HEAT officially kicked off the Horton’s Holiday Hayride Tour on November 27 in Omaha, NE and will wrap up the year in Birmingham, AL on December 22. As more riotous shows are booked for 2019, Heath cracks, “I’m afraid I’m on the Willie Nelson retirement program, which means I’ll never retire!”

RÜFÜS DU SOL RELEASE THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR ALBUM SINGLE ‘LOST IN MY MIND’

by the partae December 1, 2018
written by the partae

RÜFÜS DU SOL, one of the world’s preeminent live-electronic bands, has released a music video for their third single, “Lost In My Mind,” off their recently released SOLACE LP on Rose Avenue Records / Reprise Records.

“Lost In My Mind” explores themes of creative isolation that struck the band throughout the making of SOLACE. Similarly, the music video see’s the group taking on these motifs with a metaphorical portrayal of smashing through emotional walls while stuck within the grips of a couch and its classic symbolism of demotivation. This storyline is set within one of Los Angeles’ industrial warehouse compounds, paralleling the subterranean music scene of which the band frequented between writing sessions on SOLACE.

The video comes alongside the RÜFÜS DU SOL BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, featuring forthcoming album remixes, unreleased music from their new imprint Rose Avenue Records, and a bevy of deep cuts that influenced SOLACE.

With their family and friends left behind in Australia and the shadowy underbelly of Los Angeles taking hold, RÜFÜS DU SOL turned to sleepless nights in the studio and a looming sense of darkness in the writing process. The result is an album as equally melancholy as it is dance-floor driven, a direction in which “Lost In My Mind” stands at the center.

The voice of lead singer, Tyrone Lindqvist, calls out in dismay on “Lost In My Mind” with a harrowing, yet deliberate message:

“I’ve been walking out all on my own
I’ve been losing sleep while I’m not home
I don’t need my leaders to decide
If I had my choice I’d speak my mind”

SHARE DELICATE NEW TRACK ‘GOODBYE‘
FROM FORTHCOMING EP ‘HER SONGS LA‘; RECORDED BY A COLLECTIVE OF INTERNATIONAL FEMALE SONGWRITERS IN SEVEN DAYS – OUT 14TH DECEMBER
BY MADDIE JAY (CA), EMILY BROWNING (NZ), THE NAKED EYE (UK/FR),
MARIE DAHLSTRØM (DK), DANI MURCIA (US/CO)
“this enchanting release is nothing short of blissful“
Somewhere Soul (Track Of The Week)
“inspired and emboldened”
Clash
HER SONGS is a worldwide collective of female songwriters, who after meeting on social media as fans of each other’s work, came together in Los Angeles for seven days in August this year to create one shared, finished product.
Earlier this month they announced the release, alongside the soulful first taster ‘Holding My Own‘,  and the more 90’s sounding R&B follow up ‘Just A Phase‘. Today they have revealed a new taster; ‘Goodbye‘ –  a delicately refrained track written about heartbreak and loss. In the girls’ words, “It is about how to make peace and letting go by finding your own closure. We all resonated with different experiences of breakups, end of friendships and the passing of loved ones.“
LISTEN TO ‘GOODBYE’
In the one week in which they were together, the artists; Maddie Jay (Canada), Emily Browning (New Zealand), The Naked Eye (UK/France), Marie Dahlstrøm (Denmark) and Dani Murcia (US/Colombia) wrote, composed, recorded and produced a finished five track EP, ‘HER SONGS LA‘, which will be released on 14th December.
The concept of HER SONGS was born directly from the girls involved as a way to manifest a sense of global support and connection between female/non-binary songwriters, musicians and producers. Combining their individual musical strengths and pulling on their varying backgrounds and knowledge, they plan to continue making music as a strong band of women.
The creative process in LA was at times streamed live (with over 150,000 views in one day) and captured by Malthe Milthers, who documented the week’s activity and has created an accompanying documentary mini-series – watch the third episode here.
L-R: The Naked Eye, Emily Browning, Dani Murcia, Marie Dahlstrøm, Maddie Jay
HER SONGS is:
Dani Murcia (Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Production)
Miami-raised, LA-residing Colombian Dani Murcia considers herself a storyteller, and feels a moral responsibility to share her personal stories through honesty and vulnerability in music. She started singing from a young age, but only began writing music when she started high school. When she tragically lost her father to suicide three years ago, she found comfort from sharing her music with others who sought solace in her words having experienced similar heartbreak and loss. Tori Kelly, Matt Corby and Nick Hakim are all influences of hers. Her debut EP ‘In My Mind’ was released one year ago, and is a collaborative effort between herself and six of her closest friends.
Emily Browning (Vocals, Guitar)
Emily Browning is an indie/soul songwriter from Christchurch, New Zealand, who started playing guitar aged 12. Influenced by the rule-breaking melodic direction and beautiful sounds of Emily King, Lianne La Havas and Nai Palm, Emily finds writing music a way of channeling her deepest thoughts, which she’d otherwise be too private to share.
The Naked Eye (Vocals, Guitar)
The Naked Eye is the artist name for French-English singer/songwriter/guitarist Francesca Hole, who is currently based in London. She describes her music as having Jazz-Soul-Ambient undertones, and writes autobiographical songs about life experiences, relationships and hardships. With a wide range of influences spanning Billie Holiday, Julie London, Joni Mitchell, D’Angelo, Radiohead, Hiatus Kaiyote and many more, The Naked Eye finds making music cathartic and empowering, and loves how you can start the day with nothing in a session and end with a song.
Maddie Jay (Bass, Guitar, Production)
Bassist turned songwriting and production enthusiast Maddie Jay made the move from Canada to LA to pursue a professional career in music. She is inspired by young artists doing exciting things, and name checks Kevin Parker of Tame Impala as an idol due to his creative vision and execution.
Marie Dahlstrøm (Vocals, Piano, Percussion, Production)
Danish artist Marie Dahlstrøm realised that she wanted to pursue a career in music when she started university in London, which is where she’s currently based studying a PhD in Music and Neuroscience. Her main motivation is personal experiences and having an outlet to be able to express whatever is on her mind in a safe place. One of her biggest influences is Musiq Soulchild, and another favourite is the jazz singer Lizz Wright. Gospel, Latin and jazz are all genres she spends a lot of time listening to.

TOTTY Sign To Ratbag Records And Release New Single ‘Uncomfortable’ Ahead Of Debut EP

by the partae April 30, 2018
written by the partae

After a whirlwind first year in 2017, Wollongong band TOTTY are proud to announce the release of their debut EP Cut the Poppies through Ratbag Records (Dune Rats, Skegss, Pandamic) out May 25.

Danny from Dune Rats says, “We’ve loved TOTTY ever since hearing their first demos a year ago and were so fucking stoked when we found out they agreed to join the Ratbag family. Can’t wait to play shows with them!”

While vocalist/guitarist, Kelly from TOTTY adds “It means so much to us to be signing to Ratbag and being surrounded by mates that genuinely care and want the best for us. That supportive family mentality from the whole Ratbag crew is something we’re so keen to be a part of” says

TOTTY unveil lead single and video, Uncomfortable. “Uncomfortable talks about relationships throughout life whether they are romantic or otherwise… It’s about communication and remembering to always try to listen to people’s feelings and be a nice person.” Explains Kelly.

TOTTY have moved from strength to strength in the past year, gaining recognition shortly after their inception and continuing to grow as a strong touring band as they accompanied acts such as Ruby Fieldsand Skegss on sold-outs dates around the country. Previous releases have also gained ground among music listeners, with both singles SIGH and RIFF gaining Triple J play and featuring on Spotify tastemaker playlists multiple times.

Describing themselves as “Dog loving, 90’s fanatics”, Kelly, Chris and Max began working together after meeting through their previous bands and sharing love for all things fuzzy and furry. TOTTY recorded their EP in the backyard shed of Kelly’s house before taking their work to the Grove Studios for completion, being mixed by the bands own Chris Peruch. The result is the sound of a band comfortable in their work environment yet confident in taking the next step in their career.

The single, Uncomfortable is available now on all major streaming services.

LISTEN/PURCHASE UNCOMFORTABLE HERE

TOTTY will hit the road showcasing the new tunes very soon. Stay tuned for the announcement of the live show dates.

Cuartero makes Australian Debut!

by the partae April 30, 2018
written by the partae

Tour Dates

Friday 18th May: Revolver, Melbourne
Saturday 19th May: The Burdekin, Sydney
Sunday 20th May: Electric Rush, Queenstown

Cuartero, a young producer born in Malaga (Spain) has made a name for himself through his vibrant, grooving tech house productions. He can be found slotted comfortably next to elite tech house acts like Patrick Topping, Latmun and Detlef, but his style is still very much his own. Cuartero has released his work on a number of highly respected record labels including his most recent EP ‘Moon Crash’ on Hot Creations, ‘Newo EP’ on Saved Records, ‘Shadow EP’ on Moon Harbour, and more. With a following of 180k Facebook fans and a further 50k Soundcloud followers, it may come as a surprise that this will be Cuartero’s first Australian tour, but it most definitely won’t be his last.

When work and perseverance are on level with the passion for the music, the perfect ‘equalization’ occurs leading to artists destined to succeed. Cuartero was born just over two decades ago in Malaga, and although he missed the pure analog era, he felt the old-school essence which later would influence him to define his own style. His concern about researching new sounds, textures and structures has made his productions recognizable from the very first beats.

In addition, during the last year his releases on Hot Creations, Desolat, Saved, Moon Harbour, Circus, have made him become one of the producers of the moment.

In 2011 he founded his own label Sanity, with the clear idea of prioritizing the essence of good music over just signing popular scene names. Combining his activities as label owner and promoter, he has published about a hundred tracks and organized showcases worldwide. He started to produce at the age of 15, and it was from 2012 onwards when all his work began to bear fruit: many performances across 5 continents; numerous chart-toppers on Beatport; closing out the main floor at Amnesia Ibiza for residency in Hyte; his appearance in the documentary ‘Monday’, and the recipient of an award at the 2015  DJ Awards in 2015 as DJ revelation, confirm it.

Zeal & Ardor Shares New Song ‘Waste’ Taken From Forthcoming New Album ‘Stranger Fruit’ Out June 8

by the partae April 30, 2018
written by the partae

After dropping eerie track Gravedigger’s Chant on Good Friday, Zeal & Ardor now share a contrasting, second new song, titled Waste, from their forthcoming new album, Stranger Fruit.

Zeal & Ardor provocateur Manuel Gagneux explains, “Waste is the introduction of the other half of ‘Stranger Fruit’. Fully incorporating the gospel and soul elements in black metal and never compromising in its intent. We give you this song as a second single, because it’s not what one might expect to come next. This is the feeling that permeates the album as a whole as well. We hope you enjoy.”

Listen to Waste Here:

Both Gravedigger’s Chant & Waste are available now on all streaming services and as instant grat tracks when pre-ordering the new album.

Stranger Fruit will be released on June 8th in multiple formats, including CD, cassette, vinyl, and digital download/stream. For vinyl fans, there’s a 2LP 180g gatefold vinyl or a 2LP limited deluxe 180g triple gatefold purple vinyl.

PRE-ORDER STRANGER FRUIT HERE

The diverse yet cohesive nature of the sixteen tracks on Stranger Fruit is designed to encourage the listener to dig a little deeper and find their own meaning in its words. In contrast to first LP Devil Is Fine, these songs are deliberately intended to play off each other both lyrically and musically. While the record seethes with justifiable rage, its wider-reaching aim is to unify and inspire action, not to divide and create inertia. Hope tempers bleak melancholy. Superficially, the album tells small isolated stories, but there are also references to the Goetia, Yoruba, and obscure occult literature and history.

Mixing blues, gospel, and soul with harsher music has opened up a world of possibilities for Gagneux. Previously creating as a one man solo effort, the immense interest and critical acclaim Zeal & Ardorattracted upon release of debut album Devil Is Fine, has led to the project becoming a fully-fledged, internationally-touring band. After months hidden away, crafting the new songs for Stranger Fruit, Gagneux entered the studio with producer Zebo Adam and mixer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Kvelertak, Nails). While the finished sound is larger and heavier, it is still unmistakably Zeal & Ardor.

Zeal & Ardor is the one-man brainchild of Manuel Gagneux, a Swiss-American formerly based in New York City. His approach draws on an alternate history and stems from two thoughts: Christianity was imposed upon American slaves, just as it was imposed in Norway, and black metal in the ’90s grew as a rebellion to monotheism. What would have happened if American slaves had rebelled in the same way? Or put bluntly: What would satanic spirituals sound like? First album Devil Is Fine was released globally in February 2017. Zeal & Ardor have been generating significant buzz ever since, with accolades piling up from both musical peers and international media, including Noisey, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, Kerrang!, The Independent, Metal Hammer, Upset, Brooklyn Vegan, and many more. Set to instill a universal and shared rage, new album Stranger Fruit will be released June 8th, 2018.
