Kitty Crimes Drops Debut Album: A “Nasty Introspective-Sexual Vibe to Hip-Hop & R&B”

Listen to Kitty Crimes’ Crimes of the Kitty: Volume Two

SPOTIFY | SOUNDCLOUD | WEBSITE | YOUTUBE

Denver, Colorado female hip-hop artist Kitty Crimes released her long-awaited debut album “Crimes of the Kitty: Volume 2” delivering a nasty introspective-sexual vibe to hip-hop and R&B music. Three years in the making, Denver Post calls it “an eight-track drizzle of hip-hop and pop that’s unlike anything else you’ll hear come out of Denver this year.”
With an underlying theme of power, this album provides something for everyone. From Two Tens (track 4, music video here), “in all of its queer, stunting glory, is a sub-shaking banger.” to Two Weeks, (track 8) – personally, I either want to slo-mo dance in a penthouse with strobe lights, or make sweet love. And that’s exactly what she was trying to accomplish. And for those listening really closely, yes, that is Nathaniel Rateliff’s sultry baritone on Magic.
Maria Kohler of Kitty Crimes stands out amongst the crowd as a radical feminist and queer rapper, who alludes to breaking the rules of how feminine is perceived and received. Maria’s journey as a queer rapper and performer in the industry and her ability to relate her music to everyone is the reason why she’s taking her talents national through this album release and upcoming move from Denver to LA. Within the music itself and her live performances, she wants to create a space for others to also dive into what is uncomfortable.
“If you look at the collection as a whole, I’m exploring infatuation, heartbreak, confidence, and progress,” says Maria Kohler of Kitty Crimes. “This album is largely a timeline of who I was and who I’ve become, with a strong underlying theme of power. It’s a reflection of how I’ve stepped into my own sense of personal power, or how I’ve given it away.”
Kitty Crimes is most noted for her flagrant performances with explorations into rap and pop expressions. She recently headlined Treefort Music Fest, and is set to release her album at Hi-Dive in Denver, Colorado on April 5.

Hatchie shares “Sugar & Spice,” title track from debut EP out 5/25 via Double Double Whammy

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Australian artist-on-the-rise, Hatchie has released a video for the title track from her anticipated debut EP, Sugar & Spice. Stereogum, who premiered the Joe Agius directed video today is saying it’s “a perfect radio-friendly indie-pop song – if radio stations were still playing perfect indie-pop songs like this – it matches its spangly guitar shimmer with vocal harmonies that sound almost like the late Dolores O’Riordan at her sweetest.”
Harriette Pilbeam, aka Hatchie, says: “Joe and I spent about an hour filming with the guys and two days drawing for the video. It’s such a fun short song, so we wanted something simple and colourful, and less serious than our previous videos. Joe came up with the concept and we took inspiration from our old school scrapbooks.”
Hatchie made a splash last year with the song “Try,” which NPR called “hazy and misty, but with pop-rooted forward momentum.” She followed that up with “Sure,” which The FADER hailed as “transfixing and genuinely catchy – like, turn-of-the-century radio pop catchy” and Brooklyn Vegancalled “one part ’90s shoegaze and one part straight-ahead pop.”
Sugar & Spice is available for pre-order now and due out May 25th via Double Double Whammy.

Deezie Brown Drops His Debut Album “Judith”

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Austin, Texas artist, Deezie Brown released his long-awaited debut album “Judith,” a 12-track body of work delivering a very edgy and rebellious depiction of alternative hip-hop and contemporary music. Banger of the Day called the album “an absolute masterpiece…one the most thought-provoking, fresh minded, musical talents that we have heard in Hip Hop in a minute.”

In 2017, Deezie Brown released four singles leading up to the release of his album. Standout records like I Fell In Love in a two Seater, A-V-entador to the Hills, and his most recent single, Sheepskin / Shayne has captivated audience’s attention leading up to this moment of his first album release.

“The album is basically a love story between me and the industry. Throughout the album I go into detail on the ups and downs of our journey and how my love is unconditional with someone that I’ve never even met,” stated Deezie Brown when asked what inspired ‘Judith’. “The lyrics throughout the album paint a picture of my addictions and the things that the industry place in front of us as a disguise on what success is supposed to look like. Throughout the album, I’m trying to look past these vivid images but it definitely acts as my biggest weakness.”

Speed on the Beat said it best, “He’s like what you’d get if you took Jaden Smith, a smidge of K.R.I.T., a teeny bit of Kendrick, and Cudi in a dark room and told them to fight to the death until none were left and you scraped up the DNA samples and created a rapper out of them.”

Coming in at a little over 1 hour in streaming time, Judith keeps the same energy presented in past singles. The artwork for the album consists of unique acrylic painting from a local Austin artist.

Deezie Brown will be playing the #SXSBreaks Showcase on Friday, March 16 at Karma Lounge during SXSW.

THE PRESETS: NEW ALBUM HI VIZ SET FOR RELEASE MAY 18, NATIONAL TOUR ANNOUNCED

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

THE PRESETS

NEW ALBUM HI VIZ SET FOR

RELEASE MAY 18

PRE-ORDER HERE

ANNOUNCE HI-VIZ NATIONAL TOUR FOR JUNE 2018

Australian electronic dance pioneers THE PRESETS are back with a vengeance, announcing today that their long awaited fourth studio album HI VIZ is set for release on May 18 through EMI Music Australia, and will be followed by a national tour across June, taking in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Wollongong, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Their return was heralded in spectacular fashion late last year with the first taste of new music from HI VIZ – the urgent “Do What You Want”, which featured in triple j’s Hottest 100 songs of 2017 and the sweeping “14U+14ME”, which is among the tastemaker station’s most played songs of 2018.  Most of the album has been mixed by John Hanes who created the classic mix of “Uptown Funk” as well as working more recently with the likes of Sia, Bruno Mars and Major Lazer.  Apocalypso collaborator Scott Horscroft also mixed several HI VIZ tracks while Flume engineer Eric J mixed “Beethoven” – the pair’s sly nod to their Conservatorium years.

“We wanted to make something that was literally meant to get you out of your head”, explains Julian Hamilton. “All the songs on HI VIZ are outward looking so in that respect it’s much more like our earlier stuff.  It’s about trying to capture that energy you get on a great night out with your friends when you get to leave everything else behind you for a while.  We essentially tried to create the soundtrack to a party that we would want to go nuts at.”

“It’s taken us ages to make this album because we just kept writing and recording more and more songs”, reflects Kim Moyes. “At one point we had about 50 contenders and, like us, they were all over the map mood wise. Eventually we decided – fuck it – let’s just pick the most ‘up for it’ songs. Those tracks are always the most fun for us to play live anyway so we thought ‘why not have a whole album of them?’”.

Both Julian and Kim individually produce other artists outside their Presets collaborations, so it’s not surprising that they, once again, are credited as Producers for their own album. It’s also apt that some of the artists with whom they’ve worked should make HI VIZcameos. For example, “Are You Here?” features indie rockers the DMA’s, whose latest release was co-produced by Kim. Similarly Alison Wonderland – for whom The Presets recently created a widely played remix – guested on the beaty “Are You Out Of Your Mind?” while Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters added vocals to the dark’n’steamy “Tools Down”.

It’s been a decade since The Presets first set festival fields alight with breakthrough anthems like “My People”, “Talk Like That” and “This Boys In Love”. The pair had been making waves in Sydney’s clubs since forming in 2003 and signing to the influential Modular Records, but it was their 2008 Oz chart topper, Apocalypso, that first introduced them to wider audiences. That album was certified triple platinum and won them six ARIA Awards in their homeland. By contrast, 2012’s critically acclaimed Pacifica was comparatively introspective but epic gigs around the world – from Glastonbury Festival and Coachella to Splendour In The Grass – forged the duo’s reputation as Australian electronic music trailblazers.

HI VIZ lands May 18 and the album is available for pre-order from today, visit: thepresets.com/preorder.

JACK LADDER & THE DREAMLANDERS release new single + announce The Killers support!

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae
‘Feel Brand New’ is the third song taken from the forthcoming Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders albumBlue Poles, out May 4 on Barely Dressed Records, and was premiered on Brooklyn Vegan today.

The track takes a different direction, both musically and thematically from previous single ‘White Flag‘. Instead he captures and celebrates the sweet disposition that love can make life’s problems seem insignificant. It’s Jack Ladder at his most playful and joyous.

“Every moment heaven sent / dream together, pay the rent /
And never seem to save a cent / Still, I feel brand new.”
“The bones of the song appeared on New Years Day after going to bed sober before midnight.” Ladder says. “That day my partner and I went for a short bush walk that turned into a 5 hour trek. I was feeling a new chapter turning over.”
“Another year up in smoke / moving on, not losing hope /
You’d think we’d hang ourselves with this much rope, but I feel brand new.”

MIDDLE KIDS REVEAL NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘ON MY KNEES’

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Credit: Maclay Heriot

“Hannah’s voice is a little Stevie Nicks-ie and the jangly guitars sound like they’re lifted from an interstitial scene in Singles, but you know sometimes you hear a song and you just like it.”

– NOISEY

“Heartfelt, clever ruminations at the intersection of indie rock and alt-country”

– ROLLING STONE

“Led by the powerful vocals of Hannah Joy, the trio deal in infectious indie pop-rock.”

– SUNDAY TIMES CULTURE

Aussie trio Middle Kids will release their debut album Lost Friends next month, and today they share new single “On My Knees”. The band explain the track is “about rejecting the value system of the individual as the prime unit of society. It’s also about how suffering and disappointment can help change our perspective in a healthy way. When we stop focusing on ‘winning’ and can submit to something bigger, or to each other, we are better people.” Listen HERE.

On Lost Friends, Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz bring back their knack for haunting hooks, lyrical poignancy and irresistible indie rock appeal that critics praised in their self-titled first EP, released in February 2017. This radiant collection of new songs conjures melodic nostalgia for some of songwriting’s very best, rich in heartfelt build and beautiful simplicity.

Middle Kids made a powerful debut last year with the release of their internationally acclaimed self-titled EP, featuring singles “Edge of Town” and  “Your Love”. The band dazzled at several SXSW and The Great Escape showcases, made their U.S. television debut on Conan and supported legendary acts like Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs.

The new album, Lost Friends, is the kind of album that sucker-punches you in the gut, revealing its nuances only after repeated listens. The songs’ edges are jagged, the production clean, stray imperfections imbue warmth and a human touch. Middle Kids craft classic hooks and riffs that tangle up in your brain like licorice and choruses that linger long after the song has faded. And they’ve bonded over a greater sense of what their music should accomplish.

Lost Friends will be released on May 4th through EMI Music Australia and is available now to pre-order HERE on limited lilac coloured gatefold vinyl, gatefold CD, and digital download.

MOURN announce new album Sorpresa Familia + share first single ‘Barcelona City Tour’

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae
Barcelona’s fledgling rockers MOURN have announced their third LP Sorpresa Familia, which will be released on Friday 15th June via Captured Tracks / Remote Control. Today they share their first single and video from the record, ‘Barcelona City Tour’, via NPR. The video was directed and edited by the band, and follows them as they explore and celebrate their Catalonian capital and hometown.

A note from MOURN about Sorpresa Familia:

We like to understand records as personal diaries. Everything you live builds you as a person, so we think it builds your art as well. We use songs as a way to express ourselves and to organize our ideas and thoughts. We use them to understand our own feelings and to grow emotionally. This album sums up everything we’ve lived during the past two years, it wasn’t easy to open up, but we did it anyway without fear. Every frustration, disappointment, delusion, anger… We got everything out, we liberated ourselves and now we’re ready for everything that comes up. The lyrics are very literal; they are our raw experiences–without makeup. We show our most animal side, reduced to our most intense and visceral emotions. Of all we’ve lived, we keep the experiences, what was learned, all the mistakes and successes. Now we know life is SORPRESA (surprise), but above all it is FAMILIA (family).

MOURN began when Jazz Rodríguez Bueno and Carla Perez started to release songs they had written as teens on Youtube; soon after, Antonio Postius and Jazz’s sister Leia Rodríguez joined, completing the quartet. They quickly signed to a Spanish label and, after signing to Brooklyn-based label Captured Tracks in 2014, broke onto the American music scene with their self-titled first LP. Although MOURN have only been making music for a short time (compared to the lengthy careers of many post-punk and rock stalwarts) they have since seen more than their fair share of bureaucratic troubles and music industry red tape. The momentum gained from their first LP came to a halt upon the release of their sophomore album,Ha, Ha, He!, due to legal issues with their now former Spanish label. In 2017, the group was finally relinquished from legal chaos and through Captured Tracks released an EP of covers titled Over the Wall — at last they were able to tour North America to perform songs from their entire catalogue for live audiences.

Rather than letting unfortunate circumstances discourage them, they channeled their angst and mistrials into the 12 original songs on Sorpresa Familia, citing themes such as mistreatment by toxic figures, letting go of the past, and being quite literally abandoned in a foreign city as touring teenagers. A bit older, and certainly grown into their talent even more than before, MOURN is prepared to once again captivate the attention of international critics and fans alike with Sorpresa Familia.

Stereo Sanctity JO PASSED – Share new single & video “Millennial Trash Blues”

by the partae April 4, 2018
written by the partae

With their debut LP Their Prime set for release May 25th worldwide via Sub Pop Records & Canada via Royal Mountain Records, Vancouver-based quartet Jo Passed are sharing the second single & video from the album with new track “Millennial Trash Blues”.

Director Justin Gradin offers this of the video: “A nightmare on the tip of an eyelash. An astrological garbage dump with burning snowflakes and a trap door.  A wild teen awake in someone else’s dream.”

Jo has been part of the DIY music scene since his late teens. Initially it was just him and his high school best friend Elliot Langford against the world. They were the “freaky music weirdos” and they began their own band projects. Jo was pretty sure that it would be two of them riding into the sunset – or maybe the gloom – together. Personal circumstances and the phenomenon of the late 20s return of Saturn (for those who believe in astrology) got in the way. Their band Sprïng called it a day. That’s where the life of Jo Passed began. The idea of a band dynamic is far more appealing to Jo than solo projects, and the current incarnation of Jo Passed feels like its most robust yet.

Jo, along with his friend and drummer Mac Lawrie, moved across the country from Vancouver to Montreal. The two would play shows in Montreal and eventually tour the far right corner of North America. Upon Jo’s return to the west coast, multi-instrumentalist Bella Bébé officially joined the band in January of 2016, expanding Jo Passed from trio to a full quartet. Multimedia artist Megan-Magdalena Bourne began working with Jo Passed on a video project for the song “Rage” (from the Out EP). This creative partnership would eventually lead to her taking on the role of bassist for the band.

When not geeking out over The Zombies, or Nirvana, or Johann Sebastian Bach… Bella, Mac, and Megan have worked with Jo to realize the live experience of Their Prime, following two Jo Passed EPs titled Up and Out.

Preorders for Their Prime are now available through Sub Pop and Royal Mountain Records. LP purchases in North America through https://megamart.subpop.com/releases/jo_passed/their_prime and select independent retailers will receive the limited Loser edition on clear vinyl (while supplies last). There will also be a T- shirt design available. The limited Loser edition will also be available in the UK/EU on clear vinyl from select independent retailers (while supplies last).

Their Prime is a record about identity and the loss of time that happens as a direct consequence of being in the city with nowhere to rent, no time outside of employment and no realistic expectations to live up to. It encompasses that fear of being beyond the glory years, the most creatively fruitful period of one’s life. Those years were lost to contemporary struggles for working relationships, home, identity and space. “It’s me owning my worst nightmare,” he admits. “A lot of the Jo Passed project has been about confronting fears. I was afraid to move away from Vancouver to Montreal on my own. Afraid to leave musical relationships I had. Afraid to bare the full responsibility of a project. I’ve been putting out records and not ones anyone’s necessarily heard. Being open about those fears is a good way of dealing with them. You end up at this point where you hit 30 and you’re like, ‘Oh what happened? Am I done? Did I not activate my main creative energy?’ It’s a ridiculous idea but 30 feels a little like 1000 in rock n roll terms.” You can hear the frustrations and the jitters in the crashing loud-and-quiet motifs throughout the album’s twelve tracks, which offer up a patchwork quilt of sound, similar to Faust’s IV or Fugazi’s Red Medicine.

Orchards Sign To Big Scary Monsters

by the partae April 3, 2018
written by the partae

Big Scary Monsters are delighted to announce that they have signed Brighton-based quartet ORCHARDS and will be revealing further details of new material over the coming months.

The band head out on tour with Minnesota trio Tiny Moving Parts across the EU and UK next month, and to celebrate the news of their signing are pleased to be streaming brand new track ‘Luv You 2’ which is released 4th April 2018via all good digital service providers.

Listen and share here: https://soundcloud.com/bsmrocks/luv-you-2/s-JZV5c

Commenting on the inspiration for the track, vocalist Lucy Evers said: “Most of the lyrics I write come to me in stages, but these words just flew out on to the paper. I penned the whole song within half an hour, just from one brief conversation with someone I was once friends with. We both fell in love with the same person, unbeknownst to each other at the time. I felt so inadequate in comparison to the other girls that this person was very obviously attracted to, but after a pep talk with my best friend I realised it wasn’t worth my energy and that if they didn’t want me well it was their loss, that I should rise above it and carry on regardless.

“I’d totally forgotten about those emotions and how they made me feel because I was too busy trying to be a boss-ass bitch (I’m definitely not cool enough to say that), but after bumping into one of the girls it all came flooding back. My favourite lyric in the song is ‘I don’t hate you because she raised me right, it’s just a pity you didn’t put up a fight’. I take a lot of inspiration from the amazing women in my life and none of them raised me to be defeatist. That’s what this song’s about – patience, understanding and never giving up – just continuing to grow.”

Previously described as a “glittery gateway drug” and combining left-field experimentation with startlingly prescient pop sensibilities, Orchards are following in the footsteps of luminaries Everything Everything and Foals with their accessible take on the instrumental complexities and effects wizardry of mathrock stalwarts like Tera Melos and TTNG.

Having so far appeared at festivals including Handmade, TRUCK, YNOT and Alternative Escape, they have also performed as part of the global music series Sofar Sounds and have been featured on playlists curated by Spotify & Buzzfeed.

Support from local and national radio from the likes of BBC Introducing, Juice Radio and BBC Radio 6 Music has been backed up by critical praise from press including The Line of Best Fit, DIY, CLASH, DORK, Wonderland, Indie Shuffle and a whole host of Hype Machine blogs and influencers.

Further details of new music TBA

Teen Creeps Share New Single “Sidenote”

by the partae April 3, 2018
written by the partae

Today we’re excited to introduce you to Ghent-based trio Teen Creeps, who have just announced their debut album ‘Birthmarks‘ set for release April 6th. Combining a mixture of ’90s inspired alt rock with hard-hitting punk, the first single from the LP “Sidenote” is online now.

Speaking about the new track, singer-bass player Bert said “It’s about not fully committing to someone and getting nowhere because of it. Feeling something but holding it off because you don’t want to get hurt again. When I wrote the words I had just come out of a relationship and wasn’t ready yet for a new one. I met someone but things went sideways because of this.”

“The dancer in the video is Jules Jordens, an actor who is a friend of the band. He showed up with an entire dance routine that perfectly translates the vibe and energy of the song. Plus, watching him go at it brings smiles on our faces.”

Teen Creeps are a trio from Ghent. You may know drummer Ramses Van den Eede from weirdo rockers Hypochristmutreefuzz, singer-bass player Bert Vliegen from the slowcore bands Sophia and Horses or guitarist Joram De Bock from the former hardcore formation Deadender. But what the three do in Teen Creeps is something quite different.

They combine a mixture of alternative rock from the ‘90’s and punk that sounds both solid and melodious. The band itself describes its music laconically as ‘post-everything’, but you can clearly hear the influences of nineties bands Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Jawbreaker. As well as those of contemporary bands like Cloud Nothings and Yuck.

“In fact, we usually play indie rock, but the kind of music to which the term originally referred in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. That of bands like Superchunk and Archers or Loaf: guitar rock at the boundary between punk and melody. Not because we are nostalgic, but because we identify with the sound of that time. It is solid and energetic, but also melancholic and embodies lived experience. That is something that we are also striving for ourselves: it may ‘rock’, but we always put a lot of feeling into our music.”

Since its formation five years ago, Teen Creeps has performed as many shows as possible at home and abroad, appearing on stage at renowned festivals in the Benelux as Rock Herk, Absolutely Free Festival and Incubate. And playing clubs in Germany, France and Great Britain.

After an EP (2014) and a 7” (2015), Teen Creeps began work on their first full album. Their previous releases were all recorded in the rehearsal room, but for ‘Birthmarks’ they recorded in a real studio for the first time. The band went to London, where they worked with the producer Rory Attwell (Veronica Falls, The Vaccines, Yuck) at Lightship 95. A studio on a lightship anchored in the Thames.

“We got to know Rory when we were the opening act for his band Die! Die! Die! When it emerged that he had also worked as a producer on records of which we were fans, to us it seemed the perfect match. And indeed it was! The studio itself was a further reason for going to London. Because recording on a big, red boat naturally appeals to the imagination”, says guitarist Joram.

Through nine numbers, Teen Creeps adheres to its mixture of fuzzy guitars, melodious vocals and energetic drums on ‘Birthmarks’. But at the same time the band also pulls out all the stops. ‘Sidenote’ opens strongly, but is quickly followed by the poppy ‘Hindsight’. On ‘Mercury’, the bass guitar comes to the fore, and in ‘Good Intentions’ the tempo slows for the band’s best number so far. “We have tried to do new things within the framework in which we work. We remain true to ourselves, but we do not want to fall into repetition either”, says drummer Ramses.

Textually ‘Birthmarks’ has become a personal record, singer Bert explains. “It is an album about frustrations, shortcomings and disappointments. About misplaced hope and false expectations, about people hurting and being hurt and not being able to deal with it. Very personal for me, but that is something that I have learned with Teen Creeps: to make myself vulnerable in my texts. ‘Birthmarks’ contains the most honest lyrics that I have ever written. The title refers to events that you carry with you for the rest of your life, whether good or bad. Just as a birthmark is not necessarily beautiful or useful, it is forever.”

Nana Adjoa Announces New EP + Unveils New Song “Honestly”

by the partae April 3, 2018
written by the partae
Photo Credit: Latoya van der Meeren
Nana Adjoa is the Dutch-Ghanaian singer-songwriter brimming with quiet confidence. Her new EP,  Down at The Root (Part 2) combines the warm, musical simplicity of great song-craft, with the bold, multi-layered palette of artists such as Beck or Little Dragon.
Released today is the first track from the new EP “Honestly“, the follow up to the gorgeous Down at The Root (Part 1). The song is a self-described “outsider track” that grew from its simple piano backing into an altogether more vibey affair. “I didn’t even think it was going to make the record because it felt so different from the rest,” Nana says. “I guess it’s about how people are scared of the possibility of something bad happening. And that fear is really strange because you don’t know what’s going to happen. You never know what’s going to happen.” As Nana herself is proving – eventually you just have to let go.

Who Is Nana Adjoa…
Born in Amsterdam, Nana spent a portion of her childhood in the concrete environs of working class neighborhood the Bijlmer. “It’s not the nicest part,”she says with trademark modesty of an area described by the local chief of police as a ‘national disaster area’. Her father was a Ghanaian who’d came to Amsterdam in the 1980s, her mother Dutch (“very Dutch”). She describes her upbringing as fairly liberal until her parent’s divorce and their subsequent embrace of Christianity. ” The second part of my growing up was with some Christian values, but by this point I was getting to the age of making up my own mind,” she says. ” It was a bit ‘too late’ for me.” She speaks of a rift it cased in her family, with the Christians (Nana’s father, mother and brother) on one side and the non-Christians (Nana, her sister and the rest of the family) on the other.
Religion, along with questions about her own gender identity as well as growing up a half black person in a pretty white environment were all benchmarks that really shaped who Adjoa is and in turn her songwriting. “In fact, I think I still unconsciously use a lot of Christian ideas and metaphors in my music,” she adds.
Nana was accepted to study jazz (electric bass and double bass) at the prestigious Amsterdam Conservatory, however the reality wasn’t quite what she’d imagined.”It was very much like school,” she says, today. “We thought we wanted to go to the most difficult department, that we wanted to be the best, but it wasn’t a very fun experience.” A divide began to grow between the restrictive, theoretical compositions she was studying and the more melodic, free-flowing music she was playing outside.
Soon after she realized pursuing her own solo career and not academia was the direction for her she she formed a band and for the first time started recording her songs. The results are Down at The Root (Part 1) and Down at The Root (Part 2)
with Part 2.
“It’s a really nice feeling when people actually listen to the music you created somewhere,” she says of an ever-growing fan base. “It’s still crazy.“

Matt Maeson New Track “Hallucinogenics Out Today, The Hearse EP Out April 27

by the partae April 3, 2018
written by the partae
Today, Virginia’s own Matt Maeson steps out with his first release of 2018, the lead single off his forthcoming EP, The Hearse, which will be released on Neon Gold / Atlantic Records on April 27, 2018. The song, entitled “Hallucinogenics,” and its accompanying video, which can be seen HERE, is a pitch black meditation on one’s own limits. Maeson told Billboard the song is about a dark time for him post tour. “I’d worked very hard to get my life back on track after years of bad decisions at that point…I was so drained and after everyone went home I stayed in Seattle to unwind,” Maeson says. “One of the nights I just kind of broke and made a lot of decisions that I regret.
Billboard observes, “Maeson’s raw voice captures the inner anguish he feels upon facing those decisions, washing away the thin veneer of the lightly strummed verse as the song pushes forward to a poignant chorus. The intense and honest confessional is tinged with a sense of optimism that could only exist with Maeson’s lucid reflection on the experience.”
LISTEN TO “HALLUCINOGENICS” HERE.
WATCH “HALLUCINOGENICS” HERE.
“Hallucinogenics” is a perfect indicator of all that makes Matt Maeson so damn striking on The Hearse, as well as his previous EP, Who Killed Matt Maeson. With songs that sit somewhere between Jeff Buckley’s hypnotic spellweaving and King Krule’s off-kilter sonics, Maeson takes familiar sounds in incredible new directions, redefining the idea of what the rambling guitar troubadour can be.
But how Maeson got to The Hearse is as fascinating as his songs: born into a minister family, he spent his youth in a family band, playing songs about salvation for inmates and at biker rallies across the country. He himself fell into drugs, and then into jail, eventually getting out and working construction for 12 hours a day while doing community service on his days off. Amidst it all, he continued writing songs, and soon began traveling the country with a notebook and a guitar, going back to play in the prisons where he started along with traditional music venues.
And now, upon the release of The Hearse, Maeson follows 2017 runs with Jaymes Young and Vallis Alps with his biggest tour to date opening for Bishop Briggs, as well as his major festival debuts at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Forecastle this summer. He will also be playing select headlining shows in celebration of The Hearse EP’s release this spring. Tour dates are:
4/27/18 Vancouver, BC @ Commodore Ballroom *
4/28/18 Seattle, WA @ The Showbox *
4/29/18 Portland, OR @ Crystal Ballroom *
